This song was recorded by Cab Calloway in the 1931 and was his signature song. I loved Cab's performance of this song in the Blue Brothers movie in 1980.
I was going to say this until I saw your comment.
@@gravy9280 another of my favorites by Cab is "St. James Infirmary"
Cab Calloway's performance was the highlight of the movie for me!
The magic way the old run down theatre turns back to classic high tone was awesome.
Cab was a master.
This is a must if only for yourself to watch. The Blues Brothers Movie is a must see. As Aretha says You Better Think about it baby.
As a dancer you definitely need to watch him with the Nicholas Brothers in Jumping Jive.
Yup, going to say the same.
ruclips.net/video/_8yGGtVKrD8/видео.html
Thirded. The brothers dancing is just so phenomenal.
Yes! Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/_8yGGtVKrD8/видео.html
Second this motion (lots of motion!)
He does this song in The Blues Brothers movie and it is definitely worth watching
I was going to say, she'd LOVE watching The Blue's Brothers, even though most of the songs have to be quieted. It's still a force of music....
Yes, and he is 20 years older in The Blues Brothers.
That was an amazing scene, LOVE it!!!
There’s a great Betty Boop cartoon short from this time that incorporated Cab Calloway’s music and dance moves. It was groundbreaking at the time.
The animators would use actual Cab film in silhouette and draw the character to match his fluid moves.
With your backstory you should check out his Jumping Jive with The Nicholas Brothers. My parents watched old movies a lot and this is how I discovered Cab Calloway in the movie "Stormy Weather". Parts of the tap dancing routine is amazing! The song is pretty damn good too :)
He does EVERYTHING! The man was one of the greatest performers ever!
Great reaction. Britt, Cab was the first African American to have his own nationally syndicated radio show & the first to sell a million records. In 1930, at 23 years old, he made $50,000. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $889,000 today.
A true legend. He inspired countless in Jazz, Blues, and Rock. Even at an advanced age he still had the voice and the moves. There is an outstanding cover done by "The Speakeasy Three" that you should check out.
Welcome to the Big Band era!! Alot of great music to explore here. Jazz, blues, swing. This is the era of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Glen MIller, The Andrew Sisters, etc. Would love to see you go down that rabbit hole. 😊
You wanna see something truly impressive. Watch Cab Calloway and The Nicholas Brothers JUMPING JIVE. I hurt just watching lol. Side note Michael Jackson took dance lessons from the Nicholas Brothers.
I second this request
Third
Cab is an absolute legend, and on top of all those things you say he was, he was also an actor. Pull up Cab sing and the Nicholas Brothers dance to Jump 'n Jive - an true jaw-dropper!
I saw Cab Calloway live in or around 1980, when THE BLUES BROTHERS movie revived his career. He performed to a huge crowd at an outdoor venue and the show was meant to recreate his famous 1930's Cotton Club performance, with other acts such as his singer-daughter, and two young men recreating the astounding Nicholas Brothers routines. The incredible thing was, he sounded exactly as he does in this clip; his voice had suffered no deterioration. A final note: Cab Calloway was an attorney! So he was never cheated financially, the way many of his contemporaries were, and he died rich
Calloway and his band still bring a smile to my face. Even my kids love him.
Cab Calloway was the Elvis of his day , way back in the day my dad struck up a friendship with Cab and after the clubs would close he and my dad would sing together
Cab was a major act in his day he could sing and dance and led the band and was very widely known for his scat singing. He was a rock star before there was rock. Great talent and one that I really wish I would have been able to see in person.
Love this guy. I honestly didn't expect anyone to ever react to this one.
Britt, so glad to hear you're artistically inclined and loved this performance. Also really enjoyed your comments. As others have mentioned, you must react to Cab Calloway and The Nicolas Brothers performance of Jumpin' Jive a song by Cab Calloway and His Orchestra. It will blow your mind🤯 guaranteed!!
Cab Calloway starred opposite Pearl Bailey on Broadway in an all black production of "Hello, Dolly" which I was blessed as a 15 yr old to see in 1968. It surpassed all my dreams of what a Broadway musical could and should be...
God I envy you, that must have been amazing.
This is the big band sound from the 30’s and 40’s.
Band Leader, Tap Dancer, Singer, yes he was an entertainer.
Oh Britt..,I knew you were blessed. What talents run in your family. And your wisdom just blows me away~~~
I always loved the Class in those old musicals! Man he was such a Class Act!! Now you will have to see the Nicholas Brothers in Jumping Jive!!! They are absolutely the Greatest Dance act I have ever seen!!! I have seen the clip where it starts with Cab Calloway and then Goes to the Nicholas Bros Dance routine that will just Blow you out of your Chair!!!! One of the greatest Ever!
He was incredibly talented! I feel that he never got his just notoriety in relation to his ability as compared to his entertainment contemporaries.
He. was the band director as well. He was directing by dancing.
A REAL entertainer!!! Yes, we're all listening to him sing, but you're right, he can act too. He was in "Blazing Saddles" and the "Blues Brothers" that I know of
There's no screen credit for Cab Calloway. The Band leader in Blazing Saddles was Count Basie.
@@nikolatesla5553 You're right, I must get those two bandleaders confused(not a big band enthusiast). OOPS
Cab Calloway, was considered the first ever front man in recorded history. Not just a singer.
Cab Calloway = National Treasure
You should of seen him in his prime, back in the 30s in. His moves make Michael Jackson look like a wall-flower. He was SMOOOOOOTH. "Zoot!!"
He was a true performer and all without Autotune.
lol
no microphone either. He's just belting it out
Yes those guys could give some lessons to those so call performers of the day...Autotune, what a laugh 🤣🤣🤣🤣 lips sync 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣....
Sorry to say ...but this is true entertainment, no fakes, no autotune , lips sync ..true musicians behind instruments . One man, one instrument , one personality..Multiply this fact by ten, twenty and you have a band . None of those electronics music of the day can match this.
@@jean-claudeledanois1247 lol ok
Oh my goodness, as a dancer, you may have seen these, but if not, these are absolute treats you'll cherish. You saw Cab Calloway in 1958. This is him in 1943, when he was a much younger scattin' hep cat doing "Jumpin' Jive" with his orchestra and the tap dancing Nicholas Brothers. 3.1 million views:

Not only was Cab Calloway known for his singing, scatting, dancing, acting and general performance....
That band is *HIS* band, he recruited them, rehearsed them, wrote the charts & orchestration, and managed them for about 200-300 gigs a year for decades.
And he was a strict taskmaster who expected his band to live up to his own high expectations.
He also very much pushed the envelope with his music, which was very racy for the day. Minnie the Moocher was about an erotic dancer ("Hoochie-coochier") among his other songs were "St. James Infirmary Blues" (about an overdosed dead girl), "The Reefer Man," and "Kicking the Gong Around." (Slang for smoking opium)
I remember seeing this as a young 8-10 year old kid in the early 70s and dancing all over the living room while trying to also do the call and response of Cab and his band, Iloved it!
The Legend that IS, Cab Calloway! What a fantastic artist human and talented man.
Cab is magnificent. So much talent--so much hard work to make it look so smooth!
Cab was a big band leader, definitely a blues man. 1930s he crossed over to College kids if that era. Basically it’s a forerunner of “Shout” audience response. He’s an amazing performer.
You need to watch the movie The Blues Brothers. One of the greatest soundtracks ever and Cab sings this in it.
You need to check out Cab Calloway jumpin jive with the nicholas brothers
He appears in the movie "Blues Brother's" and sings this song and one other. You should check it out. BTY Ray Charles, Areatha Franklin also perform.
Chaka Khan and James Brown are two more of the famous musicians that were in "The Blues Brothers."
A GREAT Entertainer from the past was Sammy Davis, Jr.... A Singer, Dancer, Actor and Comedian... Plus one Heck of a nice Guy. He was also a member of "The Rat Pack".
He did a Song and Dance cover of his Favorite song, "Mr. Bo jangles" beautiful.
Absolute classic from a legend 👍
You got to check out Jump and Jive where his band backed the dancing Nicholas brothers. Also, note he does Minnie the Moocher in the Blues Brothers movie.
There was brief mention at the beginning of the video indicating this particular performance was done in 1958. It should thus be noted he was at that time 51 years old.
I fell in love with this song back in the 70's and it's been on my playlist ever since.!
Yep. Showmanship. Bringing the audience in. A lost art.
If you ever decide to do a movie review Cab plus a whole host of blues n soul singers are in "The Blues Brothers" highly recommend. 👌
Asked my grandfather if he ever skipped school, and he said, "Only once." Born in 1917 and the second son of Polish immigrants, it was a rather rare thing that a young man of his time and class completed high school; most went into the mills at 16. So, he and a buddy had a mutual love of music they listened to on the radio, and a special love for Cab Calloway. Grandpa said that Cab Calloway and his orchestra made a daytime stop in his little town on a tour between New York and Chicago, so he and his buddy skipped school to see him at a place called the Orpheus. "Minnie the Moocher" was his favorite song. That "call and response" in this song really appealed to the youngsters in his time in a live venue. True talent and amazing entertainment!
Such a great song and performer!🤗
I love Cab. He is an entertainer. He has range, talent, and includes his audiences. It's like a big party.
Did you realize that when he was dancing he was also conducting his orchestra? The steps and the hand movements are marks for the changes. Amazing!
Cab Calloway is a GOAT!!!!!!! Check out his "That Cat Is High"... he and the orchestra are on point! He also did a song with Janet Jackson...
If you like tap, check out "Jumpin Jive - Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers"
He was the only big band leader that could sing and dance and orchestrate (not to mention-scat) and doing it all so effortlessly! What a treasure.
Freddy Mercury must have studied Cab Calloway. I remember this from my younger years, and it is reminiscent of FM at the Live Aid concert where he did that audience engagement very must like dear Cab in this "entertaining performance",
Britt.....Cab Calloway was a Superstar of his generation, brilliant entertainer. Started his own band when he was just in his 20's... also was the House Band for the famous Cotton Club. Very strict on his musicians... no foolishness there... they all dressed in Tux's of every color! He had a long life, performed well into his 80's. Check out him and the Nicholas Brothers (tap dance masters), Jump And Jive from the movie Stormy Weather. There is also a segment of a movie on You Tube of Cab and the band performing on a train.....wild!. Thanks for your reactions.
One of a kind. So much charisma this man had.
it's fun to watch him in The Blues Brothers
wonderful man and song...live and perfect...unbelievable.
Brit, to get you started on the Cab Calloway MR. SCATMAN himself, watch him with the Nicholas Brothers Jumping Jive and also in The Blues Brothers, its a musical comedy and a PLETHERA and I mean. PLETHERA of great musical talent, I think you would enjoy it. Have the day you deserve, LOVE your tag line.
I love Cab Calloway my favorite saw this when I was a child take about sanging I loved singing this with him
Big Band era. Try some Andrews Sisters / Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.
Cab Calloway was AWESOME FUN!
He also sang about REEFER.
I was lucky to see Cab on Broadway in The Pajama Game with Barbara McNair and he took a solo shot outside the action of the play to do this song. 1979
This is the SHORT version. Cab was popular in the 1920’s. Lived a full long life and was performing/singing/dancing WELL up in his 80,s
ICON‼️
He also wrote [ and , I believe , Scored] much of his music.
📻🙂
Just to think, he was in his early 50's here.
Cab was one cool cat.
As a fan of dancing, you owe it to your self to see the scene from the movie 'Stormy Weather' where Cab sings 'Jumpin' Jive' and then turns it over to the greatest tap dancing duo of all time, The Nicholas Brothers!!
Back in the mid 60s ,when I used to play the ponies a bit ,I would frequently run into Cab Calloway around the $100 window at both Aqueduct and Belmont race tracks in NY. I didn't really know him ,we were just nodding acquaintances ,but he always seemed to be a man of class and style and even then ,when he was an old man ,he was still a sharp dresser
Cab was not only an amazing musician he was in my opinion one of the best showmen of all time. the man could still out perform guys 1/4 his age when he was in 80's
Go back and see film of Cab in the 1920s--he was the most styling, handsome, gorgeous band leader in the world. So very young and edgy as can be! Invented the Zoot Suit! Had a big band before there WERE big bands!
Cab Calloway was definitely ahead of his time.
I think he was just right for his time - the Big Band era. The era of truly multi talented artists. Many self taught.
You are right. He was a tremendous entertainer and he was for over sixty years.
Check out the clip from the film Stormy Weather with Cab, his orchestra and the Nicholas Brothers for some top level tap. Also see Cab in later years singing Minnie The Moocher in The Blues Brothers movie.
"Poochin' and poocherin' or whatever it was she was doing" ... lol lol lol lol. Well I learned something new about you every time, I'm a musician and that's one of my many reasons I like your reactions because I feel like you're speaking to us sometimes as a musician and I pegged you as mostly a singer, but you have taught dance and are a dancer yourself. Wow. Side note: I have composed two different modern dance scores that were done at alive run by the university Dance Company here at the University of Kansas. I loved working weekly in the gym with the professor who was also the chair of the department, this amazing woman who helped these stars that were getting ready to go out into the big world and they would develop the choreography based on my latest installment, so I had to stay about 32 bars ahead of them and she gave me some beautiful instructions that were so General, and they worked to provide me a very creative and open sandbox but still with guidance yes. And to watch these young men and women and realize what amazing athletes they were. Oh my God. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I did it three years in a row basically.
And I really like how you were pointing out The Originals in this particular field of entertainment and what blows my mind, is this is a famous video, but this is literally a quarter-century after he first had a big hit this in Harlem and he became famous. A quarter-century. Wow. And he still has got it all going on.
And Music conductor!!!
Hadn't heard that in forever! I didn't know that was the name of the song. Peace, Love!!
The first black superstar in the movies, including animation.
He was one of the great bandleaders at the infamous Cotton Club!
To see what he can do with an audience, see him do this same song in The Blues Brothers!!
Yes, that was scatting!!
Watch 'Stormy Weather", it has the greatest Black Entertainers EVER! not for review but enjoyment. It's also a bit of history...
He does a great version in the movie The Blues Brothers
Thanks for playing my fave Cab Calloway song.
I second the recommendation that you see him in 'Jumpin Jive' with the Nicholas for some REALLY unbelievable dancing!
In the nineties when he was in his own nineties himself, he made a guest appearance in the Janet Jackson’s Alright video.
The story about this song a actually a sad controversial story about a nightclub dancer.
And Cab performance also in the movie the Blues Brothers
Wow, what and Icon the Cab was and is. Watched him in the 70s also was in the movie the Blues Brothers. Interesting man and living legend well on film now lol.
He performed this in the film the Blues Brothers. It was an awesome movie and an awesome performance.
Cab was among the greatest and lived a long life to garner a new generation of followers in the 1980's
A man, song, and performance of pure legend. Is he Scatting? Damn straight. Its Cab Calloway. Please watch Blues Brothers. Please.
He performed this song in the Blues Brothers movie in 1980. That's the year I saw it.
At that time everyone tapped and most from the 20s through the early 60s learned their trade through Vaudeville. Extreme talent. Here is Cab Calloway with the Nicholson Brothers. I question if they have bones. ruclips.net/video/_8yGGtVKrD8/видео.html
You called it correctly. He was a master at scat music. I'll second the suggestion from others of Cab and The Nicholas Brothers in Jumpin' Jive. It is a scene from a musical in 1943. Very worth the reaction if you like amazing dance moves.
*** YOU SHOULD WATCH *** CAB CALLOWAY & THE NICHOLAS BROTHERS !!!!!! MAN OH MAN they are AWESOME I remember seeing them on TV when I was a Kid CAB CALLOWAY was also featured in the original movie **THE BLUES BROTHERS**
Watch Cab and the Nicholas brothers, the colour version. It'll blow you away. Regards Charlie Valentine.
Britt, if you want to see great tap dancing. You need to watch Gene Kelly. Especially the song Singing in the Rain
And, Gene Kelly dancing with the Nicolas Brothers in "The Pirate"! Not to mention singing and dancing with Judy Garland in the same film. . . .
Minnie the Moocher was a character from a song written by Cab's sister, who was also a performer. Cab used the character to write this song!
Check out Mr. Calloway in The Blues Brothers too... 😎😎
He was their mentor. 😎
He learned his skat music from Louie Armstrong. His parents wanted him to be a lawyer. The Globe Trotters wanted him. He is the band leader. You have to see the video of him and the Nicholas Brothers (Stormy Weather).❤❤❤❤Big Band Era.
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww my wife and I now GOTTA go and watch the original. Woooooooowwwww! Holy moly!
Oh, Cab Calloway was a Treasure!! 😀
The version of this in the Blues Brothers is amazing.
you should see him perform this in The Blues Brothers.
Cab calloway packing a big band music, his band is riding his direction, like count Basie the Jimmy Dorsey band,. And The Glenn Miller band he was top of heap!
Bit late, but what Cab is doing is called "cakewalk." He also invented his own jive talk and popularized it. Amazing man.
