The love story of Franz and Sophie is rather sad. Apparently Franz Joseph suggested Franz Ferdinand take her has his mistress. Franz Ferdinand refused. Sophie was treated with almost incredible disrespect by Franz Joseph and the court. But she bore it with almost saintly patience. Meanwhile Franz Ferdinand was livid, has well he should have been, at the disrespect shown to his wife and children.Supposedly Franz Joseph thought Franz Ferdinand's and Sophie's death was the judgement of providence on a illicit union. If true - Ugh!! After the assassination Franz Joseph continued the insults to Sophie. Despite Franz Ferdinand's wishes she was buried separately from her husband, who was buried with the other Habsburgs. After the war Franz Ferdinand and Sophie's children moved the body of their father and buried him next to their mother.

Thank goodness they don't refer to Sophie as a commoner, like so many documentaries do. She was not a commoner. She was the daughter of a count, so she was a countess. But despite being royal, she wasn't royal enough for the Austrian court. In order to marry an Austrian heir to the throne, you had to be descended from a king or an emperor. Since she was not, she was looked down upon by the Emperor Franz Joseph. The old snob treated her very badly.

Wow that's a very interesting to think about because you're right. Without Ferdinand death there would be no World War 1 most likely. I wonder where military technology would be right now. World War 1 was when everyone started innovating and getting away from the traditional line up in rows and shoot Warfare Style. No Ferdinand assassination no World War 1 I wonder how far behind technologically would be because of that? Not saying we wouldn't have advanced anyway but maybe because of the war we started researching technology for the war earlier than we might have if there was no war or if it was later than 1914. His death really was the birth of the modern era. World War 1 is well known to be known for the birth of Modern Warfare.

Tyler Phillips actually crazy as it seems WW2 actually stabilized the world, Europe especially. The EU had countries sharing resources instead of one having more than another so causing another war.
Plus, look at the colonies overseas .. they gained their freedom .
The treaty of Versailles was the worst thing ever, trying to punish countries already struggling during the depression. The Marshall plan helped rebuild the countries and economies. Japan went from a not so modern country to the second largest economy behind the USA.
So crazy as it sounds, Hitler stabilized the world. Since WW2 there has been no major world war .

@@marquisdelafayette1929 It was supposed to "stabilise" the world. It was just one of the many steps being taken to build a one world government. They can't just enslave the world on a whim, they need the world to want it. They'll have us trading our freedom for our safety and it will be they we need saving from. No despair though, we already have our Saviour.

21:02 he was shot in the neck severing his jugular. Interestingly (shock..gasp) Wikipedia has conflicting articles as to who was shot first, Franz or Shophie. Since there are several contempory drawings of the event showing Franz wounded first just like in my noted time stamp, the section labeled "assassination" under FF individual wiki entry lists a source but not a quote, while the wiki entry for "the assassination of Franz Ferdinand" lists a source and a quote and the Smithsonian magazine say she was shot after FF. Also FF was the target and at his trial Princip said he wasn't trying to kill Sophie but was aiming at the Governor, Its fair to say his primary target was hit and he had gone to a second target. So FF was shot first in the neck and Sophie in the abdomen after.

    Gavrilo Princip killed Ferdinand.
Has actions led to ww1 (probably used as an excuse to go to war)
The actions of the war easily laid the roots for ww2 (argue that it was the same war with a 20 year intermission)
WW2 made the USA and the USSR superpowers
The clash of the two caused the cold war which could have very easily led to Nuclear war causing the destruction of the world.

The real reason that WW1 escalated into a global conflict was that Britain wanted to take out Germany who was allied with Austria because early 20th century Germany was becoming an industrial powerhouse overtaking Britain and hurting their economy. The US loaned money to Britain and that's the main reason they got involved, to make sure they didn't lose their investments. The German government took out ads in English in American newspapers about the Lusitania ship saying that they knew they were smuggling ammo and weapons to Britain, which was true, and that they would sink it if it tried to go back to Britain. Some Americans had a loose attitude about visiting Europe during the war, many actually went there on vacation for whatever weird reason so there were several American and British citizens on the Lusitania even though it was being advertised as being targeted by German U-boats.
The Germans sank the Lusitania true to their word and the US used it as a pretext to join the war even though many Americans didn't want to be involved in European affairs.

So,e assassins were waiting along the way and threw bombs at his car, but they missed and blew up some officers behind him, instead.
Sp, the archduke goes into hiding and leave Sarajevo and the whole war never happens. Except no. The archduke doesn't leave, but instead goes back out in the open-top car, and visits the injured officers in hospital. The driver takes the wrong turn and by sheer coincidence gets stuck right into the hands of one of the failed assassins, who shoots him.

Rudolf actually chose his wife, Princess Stephanie after turning down several foreign princesses from Portugal, Spain and Saxony. He even wrote to his mother, Empress Elisabeth and described her as pretty, good and clever. So the marriage wasn’t forced.
Franz Joseph was delighted by the choice and it was actually Elisabeth that was disappointed. Mainly because the Belgium monarchy only dated to 1830 compared to how old the House of Habsburg was.
But just as with most royal marriages, it began to fall apart and the royal couple drifted apart. It didn’t help that Rudolf infected Princess Stephanie with gonorrhea in 1886 which rendered her sterile and unable to have anymore children. They only had one daughter prior to this.
