Old Time Days - Nappy Mayers...
These film images were taken in 1953 or 1954. It was not until 1962 that the city became the capital of Trinidad and Tobago as part of its independence from Great Britain. At that time the city had over 100,000 inhabitants. Since then, the population has decreased as residential areas have gradually been converted into commercial and industrial zones and settlement shifted to adjacent areas that are not formally part of the capital. Today the core area of Port of Spain has less than 40,000 inhabitants, but the metropolitan area has more than 500,000.
