    Normally I think of my first class as an introduction class. I will ask the student where they are from and what languages they speak. I will ask them if they like to travel and where they have travelled to? I will ask them about their job and what they studied in school. I would ask them about what they like to do in their freetime. Normally I will answer them as well. If i ask the student what languages they speak after they respond I will share that I speak mandarin at an HSK 3 level, I can read spanish and Portuguese as well as speak it at a conversational level, I can also speak Khmer at a conversational level. As for asking about where students like to travel I let them know the countries i have taught in. At the moment I live in Cambodia which most students seem quite interested in. Many students ask me what Cambodia is like so I will describe it to them. I also will say something in Khmer that i woudl if I were to go to market. I will express the challenges I face when learning the Khmer language

    I think what she wanted to know and learn is the slang commonly used per region in England. She has advanced English and she can communicate well. She probably wanted to know the slang words that an average British uses in topics like sports, politics... How come she couldn't understand the British but she has a high level of proficiency?
    Or maybe she has a problem with a British accent especially if a British speaks fast.

    Great video, thank you! I'm curious about how do you manage homework? I'm just starting out on preply and although I think homework and self-study is very important, tbh I don't really like the idea of spending even more time - besides the lengthy preparation - outside of class prepping and correcting homework. Do you correct it in class together with the student? Or do you correct beforehand, then go through it together? Many thanks!

    • @ELTExperiences
      @ELTExperiences  Год назад +1

      Thank you for your comment and questions. With regards to homework that I set, I check all work during the lesson with the student and focus on communicating with the student, providing the necessary feedback. While checking homework, I usually ask students their reasoning to certain answers. I hope this helps. I believe the correct term for this is ‘flipped learning’.

    Very useful video, indeed. I took lots of notes and I do have a question about the level of the student. How do you establish the level ? Do they do an initial assessment on the platform and, based on their result, you plan the trial /demo lesson?

    • @ELTExperiences
      @ELTExperiences  Год назад +4

      I get students do an initial level test but I’m more interested in their conversation skills. While they are speaking, I am assessing vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc. This then gives me the impression of their level. After teaching for a number of years, you will start to know intuitively what their level is. I hope that makes sense.

    • @ELTExperiences
      @ELTExperiences  2 года назад

      Hi Giuliana. Thank you for your question. The best way to deal with this is to share a Zoom link with your student once a trial lesson is booked - not before otherwise Preply will block your account. I usually share it in the comments.
      In this video, I used a pretend student who had been approached rather than a real student. The participant agreed to this and hopefully it replicates what other tutors may encounter in a real trial lesson.
      Once you have delivered the trial lesson, request the student to agree it or you could contact Customer Support to help.

    My application was turned down unfoundedly. They copied and pasted in 2 emails that I don't meet the criteria to be a tutor on the platform, which is completely untrue, given that I have the qualifications and experience to prove otherwise. I spent hours trying to create an attractive and friendly profile, waited for days for my application to be accepted and instead I receive such a vague response as to why I wasn't accepted.
    This has truly been the worst application process and support I've experience in my entire life.

      1. Get to know the student;
      2. Share materials that I use for the student;
      3. Give a demonstration of such material; and

I take lessons and taught (note taught as I quit) on Preply and it's frustrating. Some tutors are really good and a ton are who knows where from. I found a Spanish teacher and we study and pay directly and use Zoom. And their support is AWFUL. Good luck geting an answer in one attempt and in 5 days.
