That's one of the things I love about the IDW comics. They include moments for all the characters not just sonic. All of the characters are getting their time to shine. I love sonic but sometimes we need other people to shine too.
I'm just happy to see Blaze as a proper character again. I hope her character as an alternate universe counterpart to Sonic gets fully explored in this series... Man I'd love a Sonic Rush storyline.
Honestly, I find it surprising that some people don't like how some characters are in the comics. I like how they are portrayed. At least they have more to do than in the games. *sigh...* Also, if we take all the idw Sonic comics out so far, in addition to the ones that will be released soon to wrap up the current arc, I would love if all of this became a game. Sure, we would already know the story, but would we care? It is similar to how you read a manga that suddenly gets an anime adaptation. You already know the story, but you still watch the show to see it in motion and hear the characters speak. So I'd say: Sonic Team... please make this into a game with good mechanics. :D
I see your point, but with this particular story, it really fits as a game. I can seen cutscenes, levels, bosses, playable characters and even certain mechanics when I read it. Besides I have always preferred Sonic games where the story feels relevant, like the adventure games, heroes and Unleashed. Forces is a miss because it had potential but got mishandled into a mess, both story and gameplay wise. As for the comics being non-canon: Everything "non-canon" can be MADE "canon". Don't just rule out a story because of that if it has good potential.
The Metal Sonic arc is easily one of my favorite arcs considering it included one of my creations when I was young. Super Neo Metal Sonic. And it almost came out exactly how I pictured it. If the white lines were black then it wouldve been like picture perfect tho I still really like the white lines.
I just wanted to say thanks for getting me interested in the IDW comics. I jumped in after watching your Mr. Tinker video and the twist with Neo Metal Sonic coming back hooked me in completely. A big problem with the modern games is the reliance on nostalgia, but the comic is using nostalgic elements in meaningful ways that I really love.
With all of the different characters they have they could probably make a good Dynasty Warriors spinoff similar to Hyrule Warriors or Fire Emblem Warriors. I think a Sonic Warriors game could have potential.
Metal overlord was definitely under utilized. He is a gaint metal dragon powered by the master Emerald itself and somehow doesn't have a simple electromagnetic discharge. At least put up a good fight instead of being torn apart like scrap. The depictions of Shadow and Eggman are certainly stinkers that deserves it's own video to address.
After watching your first video on where to start I figured “ehh, why not?”. I bought the series up to this point and just finished this entire arc today and it is fantastic! This series has so many nods to all of Sonics gaming history (even the music), and you can easily tell that IDW or Ian Flynn is a huge fan of Sonic. If you’re a sonic fan and on the fence about this series, just buy it from the beginning and you’ll love it!
YES! Thank you for this video. I've been waiting for the next episode of this series. I truly love and enjoy it. I'm not sure why I particularly love this series so much but I do like to learn about sonic stuff
Almost didnt watch this because the thumbnail made me think of old ameture AMVs, and I thought it was a random one on my feed from someone I forgot or didn't think I was subscribed to.
Darth Vader had to be the inspiration for Neo Metal Sonic. This is actually my favourite version of him, he just looks so badass! "All living things, kneel before your master!"
the song lyric references in Neo's speech at the start of his fight with S&K actually made me chortle, didn't expect a reference to "I AM ALL OF ME" of all songs in a modern sonic story
7:06 I actually did an idea about that. Imagine an AU where Metal Overlord wasn't Neo's final form. Super Sonic says that whole "Too bad it's all over, for you!" and then we hear Metal's voice "This isn't over...". Metal Overlord blasts out of the cloud bank, pieces falling apart before liquifying again(like in the Canyon level), and collapsing into a new form, which while still retaining aspects of Metal Overlord, is much more humanoid than dragon. Introducing: Neo Overlord. With their super states running out, Neo defeats Super Sonic. The Chaos Emeralds depleted for now, all three remaining teams converge on Neo again, trying but time for the next transformation. This would be Neo Overlord phase 1, in which you play as one team, but the other teams are also there fighting as separate computers. No one can damage Neo Overlord, only hold him back. Team Sonic transform again, this time seeing the return of Super Tails and Super Knuckles instead of the Super Shield. Super Sonic smirks at Metal. "Ready for Round 2?" Edit: I dunno about the Amy criticism. From what I know of Fleetway, Amy filled the leadership role. Same for the Shadow(before the Zombot Saga). I remember in Ghosts of the Future, Shadow was still a hero, though much more of a grouch. Shadow in the Angel Island arc makes me think he hasn't had any coffee and doesn't want to tolerate anyone's nonsense. Point him at the bad guy, he'll take care of it, and donezo.
So I was just thinking. At the beginning where neo metal and sonic are fighting, what I was thinking was; what if sonic went like “ight, imma pull a shadow on you”, neo’s like “what?” And then sonic pulls out two freaking uzi’s from his back and shoots neo metal right in the yellow core stomach thingy and then neo metal just dies. Then sonic’s like; “huh, I didn’t expect that to work” and he just leaves. But neo metal is still working, even if barely.
I love EVERYTHING about the IDW comics... Except for Shadow's characterization. I'm fine with him being arrogant. After all he was since SA2. But he is so... Angry all the time, it's annoying. Really hoping that at the end of the current arc he learns something. I'm fine with his edgyness, but he needs more to his character than just that.
I haven't even read this comic yet I can't be the only one who feels off about how ironic it is that you'd be WEAKER when you turn bigger. Literately just cause its harder to convey power when it comes to "big guy hit little fast guys" Ian felt he could get away with this... Don't get me wrong, this comic looks awesome! But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disapointed, you actually had me invested in what was going on prior to that moment happening then seeing everyone just tear him apart limb by limb...
6:30 If they got owned by super neo alone.....Imagine.....HYPER! Then if he went, not super but HYPER Master overlord... Well let’s say that IDW’s Sonic universe would have to be REBOOTED 😂!
I just recently got into the comics and the more I read them or watched the dubs on RUclips the more was intrigued. The writing is fantastic and I look forward to the next three-story arcs.
Sorry to hear things have been slowing down on the RUclips front; the algorithm is really fickle and seemed to only really push your last series of Sonic 3 videos. Honestly, while those are great and got me here, everything since then's been great too. It's not a drop of any quality, just the whims of the algorithm. Here's hoping it shines on you again soon! A bit more on topic, I've really appreciated these IDW videos. I read and enjoyed the first issue but, never really followed through on it. It's so easy to tell, even just through summaries like these, when a writer really has a passion for a franchise. And the IDW stuff seems to bleed that on the regular. Heck, even the bio-data thing (which I guess they did also use in Heroes) dates all the way back to the Sonic OVA. While I do wish there'd been one or two more overt references to that (what I wouldn't have given for a panel where Neo Metal and Sonic butt heads), I'd be lying if I said what we got didn't leave me satisfied. When you see callbacks to stuff like that and the Extreme Gear that aren't super relevant or being pushed by marketing, you can feel the writer wanting to take every wacky bit of world-building in the entire franchise, stick it all together and make it *work*. I feel huge respect for the writers just for that alone; even with some missteps along the way, I'd take a flawed but passionate story over a generally pleasing and by the numbers one. These comics take chances and respect the series' legacy and it shows. I hope they continue to do well, and that these videos inspire more people to pick them up!
Yes! Sonic and company playing cards! I knew they gambled. Also, I can confirm that a Sonic slot machine does exist. A Game Apologist episode is in order
13:00 (Upper right corner) "We shall now commence this week's meeting of the (not) Mobius Gun Club. As is tradition we begin with our sacred salute..." *proceeds to pose menacingly in the corner* "..." "..." "The meeting is now adjourned, thank you for coming."
The giant Neo Metal Sonic with everyone distracting him just reminds me of how Mazinger Z solved this problem back in 1972: Just electrify your whole body, dude.
I just finished reading the first IDW Collection and, man, I loved this arc! Yeah, the final battle should have been an extra copy longer, but I loved it! I was unsure at first but it totally won me over.
It made me smile that the first time we see Knuckles laugh in these comic books was when he succeeded in saving the Master Emerald and found himself suddenly right where he felt he belonged: lying on top of it at the top of it's shrine.
I hate the fact Sega wanted Shadow to be a Vegeta wanna be, Ian wanted to do write Shadow into his own way but SEGA said "No Friends, No Relationships, Just edgyness and arrogance"
Despite really wanting these comic arcs to be adapted into games I just realized how awesome they could work as an animated show, Sonic X style. I think that'd be the best case scenario for an adaptation for a broader audience.
@@GameApologist The more I think about it the more I want it. Especially with the way Mania Adventures and TSR Overdrive came out qualoty wise. If Sega really put in the time, effort and money it'd be pretty spectacular. Alas, a fan can only dream.
Satam/Archie to play as in a game? Dude, I would take Bunnie Rabbot (extendable limbs, jet flight, super strength, forcefield, and an arm cannon (which I like to call the "Bunnie Buster")) and Dulcy (strong, flight, fire breath, hurricane breath, freeze breath through her nose, create smoke/clouds for cover, and a prehensile tail) in a heartbeat. I still think its a crime that at the very least Bunnie has not been playable yet. She can easily fit in the games on her own. Have a situation where Robuttnik destroys her body and makes her into a cyborg and use her against Sonic and co. Soon or later, she revert to the good side and use her newfound abilities and grudge against the eggman empire for what happen to her. Or, have her a part of the resistance and a mission went south which causes her to get a cybernetic treatment to become a Rabbot. Give her an arc where she has to come accustomed to her cyborg body and the things she lost but, be grateful for the things she gained. Dude, imagine her with hyper go on energy. She would be a more social version of Whisper. However, bunnie could use the wisps through both her body (like Sonic) and her "Bunnie Buster" (like Avatar or Whisper). Just so I don't spoil anything to anyone, I won't go into detail in what I have to say. But, I think that the current IDW arc can easily lead into a return for Bunnie Rabbot. Just bring her back (she's the main one I want). Plus, keep her as a southern belle. Make her a little more like 90's X-Men Rogue (not all the way, just a little bit). Still be mainly the Bunnie we know and love.
One complaint I see for this arc and the comic in general is that they take too many story ideas from the games Sonic Heroes obviously for this arc. I personally think this arc does enough differently to make it not a straight up copy of Heroes, and like you said in the video I'm glad they got to do more with Neo Metal in this arc. I especially loved that they got Eggman to make neo completely loyal to him and still make neo metal sonic feel like Neo. It compliments the doctor better than what happened to him in Heores. I feel like the reusing game plot points doesn't become a problem until the next major arc and I wished Super Neo Metal had a bigger impact in the actual story. It just kind of felt like fan service. Cool fan service, but still.
I honestly don't mind a bit of fan service as long as it's not just a straight up adaptation. I feel like Heroes specifically had cool ideas that were never properly explored, and we never really got to see the Neo form properly utilized in the Archie book. Just a bunch of copies and then a cameo.
@@GameApologist Same here which is why I liked this arc. I just feel like some reuse of the game's plot points began hurting the comic in the next arc. I'm just ready to see what the writers have in store for the next story especially that chao racing story I've heard about.
@@davidpescitelli8004 I'm a bit curious on what you think constitutes reusing a plot as opposed to just taking elements previously established to do something with them. Like, this arc starts and stops being similar to Heroes with Neo Metal Sonic and the Metal Overlord fight. The arc after has very superficial similarities with Lost World because the Zeti were never really explored to begin with besides their ability to control machines. All of the actual story beats are pretty original compared to what's in the games imo. But as I said, I'd like to see where the line is drawn for you and why.
@@Megaman12Protoman14 I like the first arc I'm just saying that was a complaint I've seen for the comic. One of my biggest problem with the second arc is that when the zeti appear it gets way too similar to lost world. Eggman makes something that causes great damage to the world, The zeti take over the invention and usurp eggman as the primary villain, Eggman is forced to work with Sonic to stop the zeti, and in the end Zavok grows giant to attack the heroes similiar as he does in LOst World. Now that is a bit of generalization since everything before that is pretty unique and they do some new stuff with the deadly six, but I felt the repeated story elements here hurt the story of this arc more than the first arc. It really hurt Eggman's credibility as a villain for me. THe metal virus was built up as Eggman's big return to villainy and as revenge against the world after his defeat in Forces, but then he loses a few IQ points because he had mo plan to control the Zonbots and no real countermeasures if they got out of hand. I get he can do some stupid stuff, but the Modern Games have been doing a better job at making sure things don't go wrong for him and having back up plans in case something goes wrong. Ian said he chose deadly six to show up because the Zombot being controlled would raise the stakes, but why couldn't Eggman do that? I don't even hate the deadly six and wouldn't mind Ian write a story about them being villains to maybe win them a few fans, but I don't think this was the best way to do it. Granted that wasn't my only problem with the arc. I think my biggest problem is that too many characters hold the idiot ball a little too much. And no I'm not just talking about Shadow.
@@davidpescitelli8004 I definitely can see where you're coming from. For what it's worth, I like that despite not having a way to control the zombots, Eggman was very much against using the Zeti and knew how bad a move that would be. Starline being a bit too eager and making that mistake is something I saw as setup for him to be even more relevant in the future as he grows disillusioned with Eggman and his methods. Eggman did have a sound enough idea with how he was going about it, because he'd normally have been able to comfortably sit back and watch everyone squirm until the world was nothing but zombots. Then he could take his time figuring out how to control them and move on to other planets at his leisure. Even if key players like Shadow and Sonic become zombots, I dont think they could have reasonably gotten to Eggman, especially since space travel isn't even a challenge to the doctor. The fact that Angel Island was untouched by even the flying zombots says a lot imo. Save Eggman himself becoming a zombot, I don't know what else could be pulled from Sonic's history to raise stakes in this situation besides the Zeti. My biggest issue is that the Deadly Six are still pretty underdeveloped even with this time in the spotlight. More issues of the comic could easily solve this by giving them more onscreen interactions with each other and the rest of the cast, but then the arc would drag to a lot of people. Maybe if they had a mini series or something that started when they were introduced into the narrative it'd be better.
personally, i'm glad they incorporated amy's resistance roll from forces it means she has something to do besides sonics stalker, it feels a bit like how boom had her be more matcher.
And an observation I’ve noticed while i guess the position shadow takes is pretty much the vegeta is personality really wasn’t he was very unique as a character and had his two arcs but unfortunately post sonic 06 writers and fans alike have given him this very arrogant and exaggerated vegeta esc personality where he doesn’t care for what others think or always wants to be better then sonic at stuff which was never who shadow was and i swear in sonic team racing all story he was basically saying “GET IN THAT KART AND RACE ME SO I CAN BEAT YOU KAKKAROTT!”
Btw, if you need any help parsing through the Archie Series, I would recommend buying The Complete Sonic Comic Encyclopedia. It has character bios, family relations, info on the chaos emeralds and super forms, and a complete timeline in the back that takes you from the death of earth to the birth of Mobius to the start of the series to issue 242, which is the last issue of the Pre-Super Genesis Wave timeline.
*Metal turns into neo metal sonic* Sonic: Dang! How many forms does this animal shaped calculator HAVE?! Metal: This isn't even my FINAL FORM!! AAAAAAAAAAA--- *transforms into super neo metal sonic* Sonic: OH MY-- KNUCKLES, HOLD MY CHILI DOG!
When you talk about Archie's Sonic Heroes adaption? Are you referring to the Sonic Heroes Easter eggs littered throughout the comic? If E-123 Omega was allowed in the comic at the time, I think the destruction of Knothole City would'vd been the perfect time for a Sonic Heroes adaption. 4:46 Can't help but feel like you did that on purpose. Either way, we have seen Amy's leadership skills before the IDW Comics. Both in Sonic Heroes and before and after the reboot in the Archie Comics. Most notably being the when different groups fought over the Sol Emerald.

You already know the story, but you still watch the show to see it in motion and hear the characters speak.
So I'd say: Sonic Team... please make this into a game with good mechanics. :D
All the elements are there! They just need to bring it together!
Silver is the bestest cutest boy in the comic and honestly that's canon Silver in my mind.
I find it extremely unlikely. Flynn has stated that IDW is not canon to the games
The only problem is that a story that works in a comic book doesn't necessarily work in a game, where story is secondary.
Adrenaline Dubs did an incredible job with their video of this entire arc. Big reccomend. Excellent voice talent. 👍
With all of the different characters they have they could probably make a good Dynasty Warriors spinoff similar to Hyrule Warriors or Fire Emblem Warriors. I think a Sonic Warriors game could have potential.
*shadow just appears and stabs the dude*
I would be weirded out if I wasn’t already a shadow fan and this wasn’t normal in this world
Metal overlord was definitely under utilized. He is a gaint metal dragon powered by the master Emerald itself and somehow doesn't have a simple electromagnetic discharge. At least put up a good fight instead of being torn apart like scrap. The depictions of Shadow and Eggman are certainly stinkers that deserves it's own video to address.
God I can't wake for Speed Reading to get to the Zombot arc. Amazing video, Nick!
Another quality video of Sonic speed reading! welcome back Nick, glad to have you back.
YES! Thank you for this video. I've been waiting for the next episode of this series. I truly love and enjoy it. I'm not sure why I particularly love this series so much but I do like to learn about sonic stuff
Glad you enjoy it!
The fact that WHAT IM MADE OF is playing in the background during the Neo master overlord....is just AMAZING!
6:46 Ooooh my god he even references the boss theme from Sonic Heroes.
he does it twice
Almost didnt watch this because the thumbnail made me think of old ameture AMVs, and I thought it was a random one on my feed from someone I forgot or didn't think I was subscribed to.
OH MY GOD THE MASTER OVERLORD! as a big Sonic heroes
fan I LOVE THIS!!!
Super Neo Metal Sonic? Guess he learned from his predecessor
Also.
Tangle and Whisper: Make a great addition to the games and make the fans happy.
Sega: "Spin on it."
Darth Vader had to be the inspiration for Neo Metal Sonic. This is actually my favourite version of him, he just looks so badass!
"All living things, kneel before your master!"
the song lyric references in Neo's speech at the start of his fight with S&K actually made me chortle, didn't expect a reference to "I AM ALL OF ME" of all songs in a modern sonic story
so thats where real metal sonic was in forces. good to see that hes not just weak now
7:06 I actually did an idea about that.
"Ready for Round 2?"
Edit: I dunno about the Amy criticism.
One attention to detail I'm way too excited over is the exclamation point speech bubble for the Egg pawn on that one scene.
Yeah. It is a bummer that Sega has thrown his character out the window. I hope he does get better.
Also he's not allowed to have friends
I haven't even read this comic yet I can't be the only one who feels off about how ironic it is that you'd be WEAKER when you turn bigger. Literately just cause its harder to convey power when it comes to "big guy hit little fast guys" Ian felt he could get away with this...
Don't get me wrong, this comic looks awesome! But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disapointed, you actually had me invested in what was going on prior to that moment happening then seeing everyone just tear him apart limb by limb...
6:30
If they got owned by super neo alone.....Imagine.....HYPER!
Then if he went, not super but HYPER Master overlord...
Well let’s say that IDW’s Sonic universe would have to be REBOOTED 😂!
Didnt really like how shadow interrupted the fight between Neo vs. Sonic and Knuckles, but still this was really good imo.
Toot toot my friend! Came out right when I needed it! Thanks nick!😎
I like how sonic knows he's way outmatched but won't drop his trademark confidence "as soon as I figure out how..."
The later issues of this arc had really cool cover-art too, especially issue 7 with its gold foil on the title.
iv been waiting for this one!! Dr. Starline is a PLATYPUS????
Neo's talking in Crush 40 lyrics. I love it so much.
Sonic adventure, riders, 06, generations, forces, heroes all in the same universe? Where has this been my whole life?
13:00 (Upper right corner)
"We shall now commence this week's meeting of the (not) Mobius Gun Club. As is tradition we begin with our sacred salute..."
*proceeds to pose menacingly in the corner*
"..."
"..."
"The meeting is now adjourned, thank you for coming."
Not sure if anyone's told you, but Whisper is apparently gonna be a playable character in the Sonic Forces Mobile game. It's a start.
For as much as I adore Sonic Heroes and what they did to Metal Sonic, I hope one day we can see Neo Metal in game again.
The giant Neo Metal Sonic with everyone distracting him just reminds me of how Mazinger Z solved this problem back in 1972: Just electrify your whole body, dude.
10:37 WOAH! tails' ears are huge in this picture
6:22
Glad someone else noticed those nods
I just finished reading the first IDW Collection and, man, I loved this arc! Yeah, the final battle should have been an extra copy longer, but I loved it! I was unsure at first but it totally won me over.
Awesome video my dude!
Didn't think id see you reference smbz. Nice
It made me smile that the first time we see Knuckles laugh in these comic books was when he succeeded in saving the Master Emerald and found himself suddenly right where he felt he belonged: lying on top of it at the top of it's shrine.
I hope that Whisper and Tangle are considered canonical characters, and appear as playable characters in a future Sonic game.
it's funny how happy and fun this arc is compared to all the _angst_ that's in the next arc
@5:39 Love the reference to the Sonic Heroes OST What I'm made of specifically "one by one, they'll all become a black mark on the floor".
I hear that Knuckles is a huge fan of "Knack", the PS4 exclusive.
sonic and knackles
Thank you for that Sally/Amy nod
7:50 "Then, out of nowhere, Shadow shows up and stabs the dude."
Yeah that's pretty on-brand for Shadow.
I was wondering when you would be putting out the next installment of speed reading. Good things come to those who wait
Yep. Just have a lot to juggle right now. Hopefully I can get back to some kind of consistency soon!!
@@GameApologist take your time man and stay safe
Wouldn't you know it, you CAN play as Tangle and Whisper in a game now. Bad news, it's a game where everyone plays exactly the same.
Super Neo Metal Sonic: Do you think you cand defeat me?
Sonic and Knuckles: No, But he can.
Super Sfarx the Electric Jester: Okay I pull up!
I hate the fact Sega wanted Shadow to be a Vegeta wanna be, Ian wanted to do write Shadow into his own way but SEGA said "No Friends, No Relationships, Just edgyness and arrogance"
I would still love to see knuckles face off metal sonic like he did in sonic 3, maybe he might in future comics
FYI the yellow gizmo is called the "Miles Electric".
I’m surprised it isn’t called Prower Electric because last name made for the company has to be made for the sake of a brand.
Holy crap the fan service in this is great. I'm hooked.
11:25 ahh yes my faveroirt sonic caricter Master Cheif.
8:35 song is ”What I’m made of”
Neo Metal Sonic: But why can't I defeat you?
Sonic: because we're.... Sonic Forces! And we're gonna hit you with sonic speed!
Despite really wanting these comic arcs to be adapted into games I just realized how awesome they could work as an animated show, Sonic X style. I think that'd be the best case scenario for an adaptation for a broader audience.
Honestly I'd love another animated show, something with storyarcs would be amazing.
@@GameApologist The more I think about it the more I want it. Especially with the way Mania Adventures and TSR Overdrive came out qualoty wise. If Sega really put in the time, effort and money it'd be pretty spectacular. Alas, a fan can only dream.
There actually is one on GamerGuyd‘s channel. Check it out.
Oh come on, tell me you wouldn't want to play a game as Bunny Rabbot. An Southern Bunny Iron-man? That would be SO fun.
Fair enough. That would be dope!
I like Metal Sonic, especially Neo, so i appreciate his appearance here.
I LOVE THIS EPISODE
personally, i'm glad they incorporated amy's resistance roll from forces it means she has something to do besides sonics stalker, it feels a bit like how boom had her be more matcher.
*Metal turns into neo metal sonic*
Sonic: Dang! How many forms does this animal shaped calculator HAVE?!
Metal: This isn't even my FINAL FORM!!
AAAAAAAAAAA---
*transforms into super neo metal sonic*
Sonic: OH MY-- KNUCKLES, HOLD MY CHILI DOG!
Adam Bryce's art was so damn good here. To me, he and Hesse are like the Yuya Takahashis (DBZ) of Sonic.
Yes Finally The Battle For ANGEL ISLAND BY Mr Game Apologist
I don't think that they were going for a tie-in story. THey were just showing what was happening in the Archie-verse in that time period.
Good video again, Nick!
yooo the super mario bros Z reference! 6:23
I feel like IDW has by far done the best job with the Sonic comics so far. I have only seen a few I will admit, the reason is I want my faith restored in the games before I gorge myself on the comics.
