I still quote this game with some of my childhood friends! This game had a lot of liminal space vibes also, which gives it a particular feel you didn't see a lot back then.
I'm playing Primal right now. This game actually quoted me. "Don't call me Jennifer. It's Jen." Well, okay, maybe she said it first. But I didn't know she had said it when I said it. lol
It was, and I do find it kind of funny that it feels like a prototype of a lot of modern Sony titles; higher focus on world and story than moment to moment gameplay.
I must've clicked right past the dialog where the doctor said she had 5 broken ribs and a ruptured spleen. It didn't really impact the rest of the story, as those injuries didn't impede her astral projection. One thing I like about this game is how Scree and Jen have to cooperate on some tasks that neither can do alone. For example, spinning up the rift gates or opening some of the heavier gates.
Smashed primal on ps2. Genuinely pleased to hear someone from uk when I clicked on this nostalgic brilliantly written blast from the past. Looking forward to what else you've got cooking? c: deserve a mini roll for this vid my G defo ❤
Ahh Primal. Loved this one back in the day and I still unironically love the 2000's edgy nu-metal vibe to everything. I love everything about this game... except the overall gameplay, especially the combat. I appreciate what it's trying to do but it always felt so terribly clunky even at the time. Thank you for highlighting this flawed gem!
This was the game that changed me as a gamer, right after this I discovered my love of stuff like Legacy of Kain. This is a game that would be prime material for a remake/remaster, not freaking Horizon Zero Dawn.
I haven't thought about this game since I rented it at blockbuster 20 years ago. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, wow. This game and the two BloodRayne games. Nice childhood memories, although I probably shouldn't have been playing BloodRayne as a 12 year old 😂
Tried playing it on PS4 recently and the camera was so bad I had to stop. Not sure if it's a bad port or if the game was really like that back in the day.
Bad how? Too fast or just nauseating? I know there are moments where it bounces along the geometry, which was probably in the PS2 as well. My guess would be that the higher framerate doesn't play particularly nicely with the camera collision.
@@residentgremlin4169 Definitely nauseating. Bounces pretty consistently everywhere. Maybe I'll give it another shot soon. I remember being fascinated by it as a teen.
The camera isn't that bad on PCSX2. It's running at about 30 FPS on my PC. There were a couple of spots where Scree got stuck in a wide open area and I couldn't move him. I had to switch back and forth between Scree and Jen a few times to get him unstuck.

Yes!!! I feel like this is one of those games that disappeared from collective consciousness, like it never happened!!! I was obsessed with it!

One of my favorite ps2 games. Still use Scree as my Playstation icon.

I enjoyed this game
It took me years to beat this game because the disk was scratched and it wouldn't load the 3rd level but then one day it just worked.
It took me hours to find the fire cave so Scree could lead Jen past the demons in the first cave today. lol

There's a replacement texture set for Primal on the PCSX2 emulator that makes it look a tad more modern.

I love the voice actors. Jen sounds sort of like Harley Quinn or Tank Girl.
I remember renting this game over and over again cause my parents wouldnt buy it for me lol
3 copies is not a problem, I own 10+ copies of skyrim.
I do for some inhuman reason I try to emulate it like ever 2 years and it always ran terrible until QT pcsx2 came out
