    Wonderful historic performance by the AIRMEN OF NOTE I had the honor and privilege to join in the Spring of 1978. The great lead trumpeter Kenny Smukal is Wonderful..as is the late Dave Palamar on drums 🥁. Years later Dave Steinmeyer allowed me to organize DIZZYS appearance with us at a standing room only CONSTITUTION HALL. .which will forever be the proudest moment of my musical life with my Parents in attendance. Most respectfully..Vaughn Nark 🎺

    The reason the band got the airtime is because Johnny heard us while we were at rehearsal and came down from his office and told the producer (Craig Tennis?) to scrap Roger Miller's tune and specifically asked me to play "Jesus Christ Superstar" which was popular at the time. Paul's tune, as we received it from Phil Wilson, was entitled Do Have At It. And as far as I know, this is the only time a military band has ever performed on the Tonight Show. Thanks for enjoying it.

    RIP - drummer Dave Palamar. Just saw he passed away last year. He came to the Note right out of high school. Great Big Band drummer.

      Way Cool that you knew Dave Palamar, or at least knew who he was! Dave and I are from the same hometown in PA; however, I unfortunately never got the chance to meet him. He was 10 years older than me, but I was lucky enough to take private lessons with another incredible Percussionist who happened to be a classmate (and bandmate) of Dave’s in the class of ’71. Like Dave, I too joined the AF Band right out of HS, but I was in the Field Bands rather than the DC Band. Both my teacher and Dave passed way too soon!

      Dave was my best friend's Dad. Amazing dude. Extremely passionate about what he loved, which were the simple things like a good burger and a fast race car. Never got to hear him play much, but he was a talented driver. Miss him a lot.

    This band has always been one of my favorites, especially the 70s thru the 2000s. I've had the great honor to perform with them on three occasions and to record with Vaughn Nark, Rick Whtehead, and Rick Lillard. I'm glad I found this. Thanks for posting.

    Yeah, they DO “cook real good”, Johnny! I see Mike Smukal in the trombone section. He was in our high school jazz lab... just an amazing musician. My dad heard him solo on “Little Girl Blue” back then and remarked, “Wow, that kid sounded like Dorsey!” Sadly, I heard , he has passed.

    Sax solo with multiple percussion back up reminds me of Maynard's band from that era.

    Mike was having too much fun playing tambourine!! BTW, I happen to stumble upon this video , always loved listening to AON and still do. If you happen to stumble upon this comment, Mr. Smucker, I think that's the name, forgot the first name (the guy who played cup mute trumpet solo from the very beginning ) let me know how you're doing, I'm the cellist from the S.A.C. band.

    Yes! It appears that David Steinmeyer is playing 2nd trombone on this recording. He doesn't have a solo in this 10 minute performance which shows the level of the band. I love the Commodores but this is top notch. Great job!

    I was playing at College Band festivals at the time and these guys were the featured guests at the end of the festival. I think a guy named Jos Mosello was the lead player ? Anybody know - they WERE EFFIG amazing !

    • @billkirchner6738
      @billkirchner6738 3 года назад +1

      Joe Mosello was never with the Airmen of Note. He played with Maynard Ferguson in the late '70s and later with Mel Lewis. The lead player on this was Ken Smukal.

    The second tune is Paul's Tune,a great arrangement by Paul Kondziela,and a great band.can you imagine a big band getting a 10min.primetime slot now.What have we come to?

    Great show. Too bad we can't get big band spots on tv now-a-days.
    The second tune is also sometimes called "Do Have At It". At least that's what it says on the chart itself. Fun to play, especially on bari. :)

    Listened to AON Band at American Air Force Base - R.A.F Burtonwood, Warrington, England, in 1955. Didn't know much about music as an 18 years old R.A.F recruit, but I remember being told that the band included members of the Glen Miller AAF Band. I wonder if this would be true.

    is mike smukal in the trombone section? Because he was a guest soloist with the Las Vegas brass band i play in 2 months ago and said he was in the band with his brother Ken. He was simply amazing.

    Great Band! I remember a few of the guys and still listen to the vinyl recordings. My father was in the USAFB at the time so I got to see performances by the Airmen of Note also. Guess this was after Bob Bunton left?

    I believe 'Do You Have It' should be 'Do Have At It'! It was a tune from the later years of the Duke Ellington Band. Buddy Rich also performed it under the title, 'Paul's Tune'.

  • @ApartmentKing66

    Another reason for 10 minutes is that they had more time in those days. The Tonight Show was 90 min back then.

  • @satchm05

    At 1:43ish, they start playing "Paul's Tune" by Paul Kondziela. It's a Buddy Rich tune. I love the Airmen of Note!! Any North Texas alums in the band at this point?

    • @billkirchner6738
      @billkirchner6738 3 года назад

      Paul Kondziela originally wrote "Do Have At It" while he was playing bass with Duke Ellington. Later, when Paul was playing with Buddy Rich, he brought the chart to Buddy. Buddy cut the opening woodwind passage, began the chart with the rock section, and recorded the piece as "Paul's Tune."

    even if the Tonight Show was 5 hours today, a big band would not get 10 seconds of airtime..
    probably the reason i don't watch the Tonight Show anymore..LOL
