- Cuba has announced a sharp rise in fuel, water and electricity prices. The ruling Communist Party says the measures are part of an adjustment program needed to get the island's economy back on the path of growth. But many are skeptical of the plan.

Lady leaving her stove on constantly rather than buying a lighter or some matches shows in a nutshell the types of problems that subsidized utilities can cause.
Subsidies can result in serious waste and serious problems down the line, when people are conditioned to behave like idiots.
As opposed to millionaires and their private jets, polluting companies, bought politics and war investments? I guess.
I hope the embargo will be lifted from Cuba, the Cuban people deserve a better life

Putting all this stuff aside, Havana is one of the safest cities in the world and very beautiful. As an American, I was treated like family on a recent trip I took to Havana, I encourage more Americans to visit Cuba and support the Cuban people!!
Cuba is 79th in GDP per capita. They just don't produce enough.
The only reason that ending the US embargo would help Cuba is because then Americans would come in and set up businesses (McDonalds, Subway sandwiches, other fast food) for them and bring in all the food from outside.

No. When Fidel Castro took power in Cuba he seized US companies assets worth over $1 billion so that is why the US imposed the embargo. After Fidel died the other leaders have kept those assets so the embargo remains. I guess they think they got the better of us. That's why they eat rice and beans for every meal and I'm having a steak for dinner.
