- David Ryan Harris is a seasoned songwriter, guitarist, and producer, having worked with some of the top names in the music industry since the 1980s. The entirety of his musical career can be boiled down into one simple, but impactful, passion: communication.
In this video, David takes a deep dive into how he uses effects pedals to elevate the message of his music above all else, using our Steel String Supreme SRV and Ultraphonix MKII as his primary gain stages.

“Im fine with being morder, I don’t have to be the brick”, best approach to working with other musicians. Thank you David Ryan Harris for the advice. Thank you Rig Doctor for creating tools for everyone to tell their own unique story.
Yes...such a good line!
Fine being the mortar and not being the brick. That’s exactly how I feel. I love being the guy playing the inversions and in’s and outs. It’s really fun and gets you so much better a player.
Yes! Well said by DRH!
I had not heard of David Ryan Harris before. Thank you for shining a light on him for me. He has a great voice and his guitar playing supports his music perfectly. Some really lovely low gain tones here. Very inspiring.
Our pleasure!
He’s got a killer voice, and he’s humble. I like him!
The best!
"You gotta play the whole song before you get to the 8 bars where you solo" so important, way too many guitarists let their ego take the wheel and forget this
Yes!!!
So
On
Point‼️
That is THE unique use of the OC-3, and I LOVE the detail on use of the sounds serving the song - the musician serving the song!
DRH is the best!
DRH is an inspiration to me. I’ve seen him live a few times with JM, and the dude shines. I like how he called himself the “mortar”. He and Pino are the glue and the foundation of that band.
One of the best!
Great voice and chops. Let’s hear more.
Check out his records :)
Love that analogy. Thanks for the insight. A wall of bricks is not a wall for long, without mortar.
You bet!
Great video - thanks. Beautiful solo in that song at the end - loved that.
Glad you liked it!
He’s description of the Ultra Phonix is so accurate, that pedal is so well designed and has such a good sound it’s ridiculous. Pushed with an Archer Ikon for lead tones, it creates this mid rich and full overdrive tone that’s so rad! This was an exceptionally relatable video for those of us that are not guitar virtuoso’s but enjoy playing music. Well at least it was for me, so thank you! Cheers 🍻
Thanks for watching!
this is the most actually useful and relevant guitar gear demo i've seen in years! More from this guy and Vertex, thanks.
Wow, thanks!
Wow!! What a Great sound, and voice!! That is the style of guitar playing I have been going after for years!! You nailed it!!
Rock on! DRH rules!
That´s a toneee! David Ryan Harris what a gift!
Yes...amazing tone and singing!
That is exactly what Ive been looking for is a whole-song tube-warmth effect that isnt massively heavy (Ive also been thinking about a solo-acoustic-on-electric-semi kind of-project after composing music unplugged hearing a tone like this in my head for years )...thank you for demoing it this way and thank you Vertex for a beautiful pedal.
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
I’ve loved David Ryan Harris since he collabed with Scott Mckeon years back
He's on our favorite players here in LA!
David Ryan Harris always has a very personal sound palette, it's a pleasure to listen to him and see what pedals he uses and combines to create music.
Yes indeed!
That tone. Wow. Something I never want to play but listening to it is sooooo smooth and big.
Heck yea!
Wow, very cool. DRH was here at the 30A Songwriter Festival a few days ago. Hate that I missed seeing him. Seems like a really cool guy and the sound/vibe he has really compliments his voice & music so well. Really cool approach. (And the pedals sound great, too!)
Glad you dig the video :)
DRH - You are the real deal. Thanks Man!
He's the best!
I was very inspired by David's philosophy! Thanks for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The solo at 9:45 is so smooth! Thanks for the video. 🙏🏻
Glad you liked it!
Love it! Excellent approach! A lot of things to learn from this.
I remember the "have fun board" you made him for his studio. The new one is something serious.
Glad you enjoyed it!
DRH is one of my all time favs. Killer.
Thanks for watching!
Check out a band called "Follow For Now" . David Ryan Harris' original band from Atlanta, I saw them open for "Drivin N Cryin" in 1992, I'm still a huge fan of the first and only FFN album.
Yes, and Brand New Immortals...also a great DRH band :)
This was incredible! A very refreshing take on demos with such an inspiring person/musician. He is the coolest!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love that man
Thanks for watching!
That breakup is juicy.
🥰🥰🥰 soooo good
Very insightful and inspirational, God Bless my musical brother! I for one ,am all ways looking and focusing on the musicians in the background, in my humble opinion, 😎 without them there's simply nothing there ! Although there are many individuals who can sing with out music in the background, extremely talented , but that's a conversation for another day ! No musicians, no rythm, I all ways say ! Peace !😎🙏👍✌
DRH is king!
Like it!
Glad you like it!
I heard David use tremolo on one version of "Shelter", I'm wondering if anyone knows what tremolo pedal he uses? He's become an important influence and I'm looking to add tremolo to my board. Something subtle and warm. His sounded great so I thought it'd be a good place to start.
Flint lately
Well done on this video and topic. Finding the right tools to inspire and give character is what it’s all about for singer songwriters!
Heck yea...thanks for watching
Thanks he didn’t explain the chain of his Pedalboard! What four is splitter and did he go straight to pa without ir? Could you please answer it Thanks vertex effect to sharing it! He is a huge inspiration.
Even I was wondering this, he mentions an IR but they didn’t show one!
Video coming on that :)
What was the cab sim being used at 5:35?
Two Notes cab m +
@@allthingsdrh beautiful sound. Thanks for sharing
If you got to the demo on Sweetwater of the SSS SRV pedal you can download this same IR for free we used.
Two notes being used for IRs?
Yes!
“On a good day”
is the last song by Tedeschi Trucks Band?
It’s called Shelter. It’s a David Ryan Harris song
@@JohnMayerSolos It's a collab between DRH and TTB. Theh both have it on their albums and they perform it live
It's a DRH song :)
There’s a new Vertex product on Sweetwater that wasn’t announced. That’s all I’ll say.
probably a preview of something to come :)
Songwriters make it possible FOR A SOLO, no song, no Solo.
Indeed!
Note to Vertex: put the guy’s name in the title of your video and on the thumbnail image. Uncool not to.
Our goal is to get the most eyes on the video with the titling and the thumbnail so more people learn about David Ryan Harris and his gift as a musician, singer, and songwriter. This is the game we're all forced to play on RUclips (regarding titles and thumbnails) in order to stack the deck in favor for views and time spent on the video. We spend a lot of time researching what optimizes best for titles and thumbs on Google, and then choose accordingly. If we're both aligned on wanting more people to learn about DRH than before, then would an omission (like not using his name in the title) be acceptable if it drew a larger audience of new viewers? I would hope you'd agree that it would be. Again, the objective being to share DRH's approach and artistry with the largest audience possible. Believe it or not, the thumb and title have a lot to do with that and the success of the video. It's not a snub to the artist, his name and credentials are the first things you see when playing the video, so I'm not sure why you'd imply bad faith or assume negative intent.
Yes . The guitar will be ok if we still care about the SONG. Otherwise its just another peloton or gamestation.
huh?
