  • It is a no-brainer that physical proximity is often the least element necessary for fostering collaboration between countries. The thing that counts for everything is a shared identity in language, culture and especially ideology. Haiti shares too much in common with Africa for the country to be denied full AU membership status. So Why did the African Union Reject Haiti? Lets find out

    As a Haitian, I am very disappointed in their decision to not admit Haiti into the union. If only they knew how African we are, they would understand that geography should play no part in their decision. I challenge any African from any African country to visit Haiti, and then tell me if they realized that they were not in Africa. I wonder; if Haiti was a rich country, would it be the same decision?

    I am Haitian. My full name is Kwame Oluwagbotemi Yesuto Nyame (Yoruba, Ewe, Akan names). I have also lived in Cameroon. Yes, Haitians were born in Haiti but the cultures of Africa were transplanted with them. The deep worldviews, philosophy, values, feelings and surface level things are African. The “konbit” concept, lakou, Haitian proverbs and wisdom, food (gonbo, pwa Kongo, diri) communal aspects are all African. Many Haitians/Africans at the time of independence were African born. The enslaved peoples in Haiti didn’t live long, so colonizers brought in more Africans at a higher rate than other areas. If some “Franco-Haitian” doesn’t think their African, it’s because of miseducation or self-hate. I’m am an African. I’m a Haitian. They do not contradict just as a Nigerian, Kenyan is also an African. I have an African first and last names and also all of my children because we are all African. As the son of Haitian immigrants, I was born here in the US. In the '80s, growing up in Miami, I remember when being Haitian was a dirty word going to school, so this left me never to explore who I really was. In my 20's I began to absorb everything it meant to be Haitian and learned about our History. In the last 15 years, I have done the same with Africa, and I have come to learn a lot about my identity as an African. Before I saw this clip today, I have come to my own conclusion that Haiti's hope and future rest with Haiti being part of the African Union. The way I looked at it, a part of Pan-Africa went out and against all odds won new land for Africa. It has truly saddened me today to see, the people I most Identify with, in the AU make me feel like I did as a kid in the '80s. We all must protest to the AU and let them know we are FAMILY!

The present, older generation of 'leaders' in most African countries today are a big problem to even Africans on the continent. Their views on things are mostly different & warped compared to views of Africans 45 years & younger. One thing a whole lot of younger Africans are gladly doing these days is accepting & encouraging pan-Africanism (I'm sure you can also see the support for Haiti from Africans in the comments). In the western hemisphere haiti is like a lost child that's among neighbors if not for the rest of the world watching they would've devoured it already, so Africa do the right thing, let us in the union so they'll know we have families that stands with us.

  • @fabricefils-aime7142
    @fabricefils-aime7142 2 года назад +89

    Haiti has played a main role in stopping colonisation. I can relate that the majority of the population always recognized that their ancestors who were slaves, came from Africa most likely Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana and Benin. Toussaint Louverture, a haitian independance hero was the grandson of the king of Dahomey (Benin). Haiti was the first and only nation to stand against the previous world order that never accepted us Black people as human beings.
    There is a great haitian author :Antenor Firmin who wrote : "De l'égalité des races humaines " in which he defended that Black people Can think and conclude that we are all equals. So before we had Senghor, Césaire there are plenty good Haitian authors who took position against slavery or initiate panafricanism. That's why before and after the independance of many African countries in 1960's , there were a lot of Haitian teachers, professors, diplomats, engineers, psychologists, sociologists who left Haïti to contribute to the formation of many African. They were in Côte d'Ivoire, most likely countries that speak french. I think that Haiti deserved better than this No answer. Haiti and Cuba helped a lot of African countries economically, financially.
    You can't understand Africa if you don't know and experience Haiti. You can't understand Haitian people if you don't know and experience Africa in its roots. That's why wherever you find a Haitian even if they never go back to their Land but they got Haïti in their heart and they can't understand that connection.
    It was a sad decision made by African Union. However it's never too late to fix . We are confident that Africa will play its part in Haiti 's future ( vice versa). Haitian culture is probably the second most diversified culture in the world. You should listen to Haitian music, eat their food , dance with them and you will see
    Most importantly , nations have interests but no friends maybe that's why they refused the integration of Haiti. But the thing is that we black people we refuse to be united !
    I hope one day Africa will make the right decision

    "It’s not something we decided, it’s a place that we earned after we fought for our independence 212 years ago... We paved the way for every other African nation to be free today, so historically speaking Haiti should have been in the AU already." - Haitian High Commissioner to South Africa Jacques Junior Baril, 2016."
    At the moment the African Union is not what the name might imply. That it is a union of African people and their agenda. It is actually a geographic union that includes people who are culturally and historically Anti-Black (north of the Sahara, and you could actually include some nations like North Sudan).
    We have a long way to go - but if you are reading this as a Haitian, please understand that Black Africans see the wisdom of your participation. The AU isn't that vehicle we need. We need a Planetary association of African people's that works economically, strategically, people to people, and militarily to gurantee the safety and livelihod of our brethren from ocean to ocean, pole to pole. And it's going to happen!

      The racism in your comment is disgusting. That's why some North Africans don't feel part of Africa. Don't be an ignorant, being an African means being a citizen of a country located in Africa, simple as that. Haitians are from the Caribbean, why on Earth should they join the African Union? I don't hear white majority countries like Canada, Australia and New Zealand trying to join the European Union. I'm African and for me, I want us to primarily focus on strengthening the bond we have with North Africans than other black majority nation in the Caribbean.

    • @allenmaa7064

      @@sabertooth9971 Reread the comment. What people are hungry for is an organization that sets an agenda for all people of Black African descent, all over the world. The AU is not that and was never designed to be that. Semantics, semantics. Yes, you are African by being a citizen of a nation on the landmass. But when people around the world say African they mean Black African. I don't think it's racist to point out the Anti-Black racism of North Africa, it's been documented and experienced. You focus on North Africa, good for you. I see a more vital and consequential connection to the Caribbean and Black people in North and South America.

    As a Haitian man myself I am not upset. Europe has the European Union, Africa has the African Union. In the Carribean we have Caricom. I don't think it is necessary to be party of the African Union or any other that isn't in the Carribean. It's like saying Cananda should be part of Caricom. No not happening. Lastly, I see some people talking about Haiti being part of Pan Africa, this wouldn't fly for a lot of Haitians because some don't just identify with having African ancestry. Like most places in the Carribean we are a multicultural people. It's like saying we should have the right to join the European Union just because we have Polish Haitians decedents from the Polish Legion of the Napolean times. It makes sense on the decision economics is mostly based on region. It's not about identity it's about geography to those that don't agree yes geography is important.

    You people understand that the african union is not a pan black organisation right? It is not mainly based off culture. North african countries arent even black. It is made because african countries have a similar geo-political situation. They are countries that often have the same problems and therfore can better solve their problems together. Also they border eachother and have a union that works for peace and agreements, because they border eachother. So from a political perspective it makes sense for them to unify, also because of foregin intervention and a united economy inthe same area. Haiti is on the other side of the world in the carribean, what practical purpose does it have to have them in this union? Haiti has a completely diffrent geo political situation and goals.
