The old Audi R8 is better than the new Audi R8

  • The Audi R8 was designed to be neither arrogant, aggressive or vulgar. It was designed to stand out primarily for its elegance. The R8 is engineered to be a well balanced, mid engined sports car first of all. But it also needed to be a car you can drive in comfort every day and not just on the weekend.
It was Audi’s first mid-engined sports car that combined their racing experience with the innovative design and technological expertise of Audi.
For the styling, the design team wanted the R8 to “looks like it is tensing its muscles in readiness - like a sprinter on the starting blocks”
The car was developed from the 2003 Le Mans prototype and the transition from concept to production is one of the best ones I can remember from the mid 2000s. I actually think the production version looks better than the concept and I’m gonna let you know why.

Like they went too far with trying to show the social status of owner, those cars try very hard to speak ,,I'm better than you" instead of being elegant. Finally, you mentioned the first gen A5 Coupe! In my opinion, it is one of the best looking cars of the modern era. The design is just so elegant and simple, and the proportions are perfect. (It would be great if you could do a video about the A5).
Talking about the R8, I also think that the first gen looks better, but the pre facelift of the current one looks pretty good as well, mainly, because it is a more modern approach to the original R8 design language, but still maintaining that elegant look.

I actually think the very first V8 version looks better than the V10. There is something about how the "fringes" in the vents below the head & tail lights are more distinguishable on the V8, to then get kind of framed in on the V10 design. Also the cleanliness of the side blade not having that extra notch preserves some elegance, on the V10 it kind of gets disrupted. Lastly the old headlights just look at you differently. While I do agree the newer LEDs look better, I can't really drop the way that round reflector in the first gen kind of gives off a classic car SLS-vibe where classic meets modern. The first V8 is true perfection, and you can't improve perfection, so the newer ones are never gonna look as good.

1st gen R8 looks better, no doubt, didn't remember the LeMans Concept , thought initially of the RSQ. And speaking of Noble, I would like to know your opinion of the recently launched M500, which looks weird to me because of the 'off the shelf' elements and maybe 'copy/paste design' (?).

1st gen was amazing, way ahead of it’s time. 2nd gen is a great update, but I think they nailed it on 2019 with the updated grille inlet slits that tie back to the original Audi Sport Quattro. I agree second gen including 2019+ is innovation vs revolution but that’s a natural cycle of design and they did a great job with the R8. I don’t think they did a very good job on most other Audi models like A4/A5 lines, the RS6 is great.

I get what you're saying and I agree that it's sad. I like the old r8 way better too. Yet I think the change was intentional. When you compare the other cars with each other, you see that nowadays all the cars have that kind of aggressiv look to them. Back in the days they all had these soft shapes. So I guess it's just the overall design language of Audi that is reflected in the R8s

Currently have a 2018 Gen2. Had a Gen1 GT years ago, and I agree I loved the design of the Gen1 and also how it drove. Gen2 is definitely faster but doesn't have a soul. and the design is meh. Only good thing is I have bluetooth now. lol

Personally I prefer the newer gen because of its aggressiveness. I love both generations but the previous gen only looks good if it's in its LMS GT3 variant, SR66 Design bodykit, or the Liberty Walk widebody kit. Same would also apply with the current generation because stock is boring.
Anything to be more race car rather than have elegance/luxury feels, gotta have that GT wing. I totally get it with the whole Lambo-oriented designs as you mentioned.

The perfect R8 would be the new gen roof over the old gen body. It would blend really good and have that sporty noble m600 look with those super elegant lines that audi used to use. My fav audi was the c6 RS6 that looked 0 agressive and really elegnt. Today's audi rs6 is called porsche panamera sport turismo as it is the only car that captures that design elements for elegance and speed.

Love how the older R8 looks more futuristic than the new one.
Also I don't really like these angular cars, at least not on every car and there aren't many brands that don't use these kind of design language but Mazda is one of those and I think their cars look really elegant.

The latest generations looks like they hugely influenced by ironman. I think the marketing of the car is also that if you want to feel like Ironman, get an r8. Cuz it feels like you wearing one of his armours with similar styling and late tech. It is a very powerful communication aspect, it just works. But the first gen R8 is truly an icon.

1st gen R8 is my poster car, absolute fantastic car! Gen 2 and gen 3 arent that nice, seems like it lost it's original style. The V10 is definitely an upgrade from the V8 with only a few minor design changes. Plus now they are semi affordable. Hopefully in the next few years
