The laws are not the reason why motorists are more careful about cyclists.

Let's talk about euthanasia. Sorry, can't help it. Difficult. I think that you can only judge that if you yourself are terminally ill and in unbearable pain. (That can be mental or physical.) Who gets to judge when enough is enough. Fortunately, the church here in the Netherlands has no say in this. And, as an individual, your rights carry a lot of weight. So, no priest, rabbi, imam, or anyone else make that decision but you and you alone. And that is why I'm proud to be Dutch.

The bell is super useful for warning, like a car horn. You see someone on a phone walking into the bike lane: RING RING RING! accident diverted :)
The lights are a bit overkill: since we have plenty streetlights, and we are only required to have 'some' lights: (white in front, red in back), that can be very tiny and dim: as long as they are there. Its to make the bikers more visible for other traffic. Which is not very crazy as well.

Example: I grew up near Rotterdam in a town where the A15 goes through. The A15 is one of the major highway arteries that has 18converging lanes at the spot where I lived. Parralel to the A15 is a cyclist path called westpad(westpath). This path has a whopping 2lights at a certain point and it is about 30-60minutes cycling to the Brienoordbridge. The Netherlands is the original "Land of the Free". The UK got it only ~100 years later via the Glorious Revolution when William of Orange and his wife Maria Stuart took reign over the UK. Also 100 years later because the ideas were already founded in New Amsterdam (current New York City) and it became the basis for the USA constitution as well via the Pilgrim Fathers and so on.
So yeah, of course we are the land of the free.
In fact the first article of the first chapter in the constitution states that everyone in this country is equal and there shall be no discrimination on any basis.
So no matter what color of your skin, your religious belief, if you are a homeless person or the king himself. All shall be equal by definition of the constitution.
In fact we can just address our king by his first name! Which isn't out of disrespect but because of that equality basis we all share on which the entire country is build. Which is also where our "doe normaal" (act normal) stems from, to be equal on equal terms we all have to be on an identical playing field. Not one person is a little more equal than the rest, like in George Orwell his Animal Farm.
We all have our roles in life and some jobs pay better because they demand more effort, sacrifices or have more risk. That still does not mean the individual is valued any more than someone else with a lower paid job.
So yeah. We all come from the same source, from the loins of our parents, we come with nothing and we go with nothing. So in basis we are all equal and thus should be treated equally by the letter of the law as the law should at all time be neutral. Because if the law is not neutral and starts to favor one group or individual over the other things will escalate over time into a civil war. For inequality has always made individuals angry, as well as restricted freedoms.

I would note here that William III didn't just export Dutch laws. Liberalism would properly be credited to John Locke (who came from exile with William), though no doubt the Dutch did start some of those ideas. The Founders took it even further, and by then the Netherlands was lagging far behind as far as freedom goes. But it is a key part of that tradition.
More so, I think your post makes the main argument. The Netherlands isn't so much a land of freedom. Above all, it's a place where nobody gets to feel better than others. A place where everyone deserves criticism, but nobody gets to be burned at the stake.
It's not exactly "equality" as the word is often used. It's rather an expectation of humility and modesty. Succesful people deserve credit and wealth. But they'd better not get conceited about it, nor flaunt their riches.
As a result, a place where every leader (politician, police, boss, clergy and so forth) has to earn respect... it doesn't come with the badge. They rule insofar as they agree with the people.
So it's a bit distinct from freedom. The Dutch don't necessarily want to be free. It's just that the kind of leaders who are authoritarians or tyrants, won't get any respect.

for student housing there are special permits and rental agencies (some subsidised by the universities) that cater specifically to students.
It can still be problematic at times to find something as a student, but it is there (the problem is mostly because of the price of housing in general going up faster than the income of students, or indeed people in general).
Cannabis is legal now, for personal use, up to a certain (and small! a few grams only) amount. That makes it legal to buy in a coffee shop (as they won't sell you more than that amount) but it's illegal for the coffee shop to sell it.
Weapons: not just automatic weapons are illegal, but also semi-autos and manual loading weapons as well (including not just firearms but crossbows as well.
And yes, the hoops you have to jump through to get a firearms permit are ridiculous. Not just do you have to be "an active member" of a gun club (meaning someone who is there basically at least every few weeks and doing stuff for the club) but there are exhaustive police background checks not just to get the permit but to be allowed to join the club. And then when you've been a member for the required period of a year there is another exhaustive background check to get the permit to own a weapon, after which you can apply for a separate permit to buy a weapon (a specific weapon, you need to enter type, brand, serial number, seller's name and license number, and a lot more information on the application form) at which point there's another background check.
THEN you're not allowed to transport that weapon from the shop to your home. No, someone with the necessary permits will have to transport it for you to the gun club, where it will be stored for your use for 5 years. After those 5 years of active membership, more requirements (training, marksmanship, things like that may be involved) you can apply for a permit to store your gun at home and transport it yourself. Which permit will detail the exact storage conditions required (where in your home the gun safe is and what its specifications are to be) as well as the exact means and route of transport (where in the car you're required to keep the gun, where the ammunition, etc. and what roads you're allowed to take, including detours in case of road closures). That license of course requires more police background checks, and also requires you to sign a form that allows the police to enter your house where your gun is stored at any time without a warrant for search and seizure. In theory this is to allow them to take your guns if they decide you should no longer own them, but a crooked cop might use it to just steal whatever he likes without you having anything to complain about (I've not heard of that happening, but it's theoretically possible, good thing we don't have a lot of crooked cops in the Netherlands).
Urinating in the canals? Not just in the canals. Urinating in public is illegal in general, everywhere.
Bike helmets are weird. If you mandate those, why not mandate knee and elbow pads as well? Heck, why not mandate full padded suits like those worn by stuntmen?
Take some responsibility for your own safety people, don't do stupid things (of course bikers still do stupid things in the Netherlands, because the law as you said pretty much grants them immunity from the consequences, at least legal and financial immunity).
I've been cycling for 40 years in the Netherlands and never had a serious accident (nothing more serious than some scrapes and bruises). As a car driver for 20+ years I've never had an accident that caused injury to either myself or others either. Defensive driving pays, not getting on the road while drunk pays even more. Thinking before you do something stupid and then deciding to not do it after all pays a LOT.

the euthenasia one is a very difficult one. yes it is legal, BUT there's a lot of hoops to jump through to actually get it done. one of those hoops is that you have to be sound of mind on the day of the euthenasia to give the final consent, and a psychologist would have to evaluate your mental state. meaning if you have a depression you can't just legally off yourself. I do think it should be legal, but only once 18 OR under if with consent of a parent (think maybe your child has such a debilitating illness that their life would be horrifically bad). If bicycle helmets would be mandatory, our bike culture would die. More than 60 to 70 percent of dutch people would stop cycling. That would have disastrous consequences for general health, and would cause immense traffic problems because of all those people starting to use cars instead. We just haven't enough space for such huge amounts of traffic.
Besides, dutch people would be protesting, even going to revolt, and it would lose the party responsible for this law almost all of their voters. No party is willing to risk this.

About the car drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, the stronger participant must take care of the weaker one. So, if a cyclist hits a pedestrian, then it is the fault of the cyclist. And in case of children, they are the weakest, you must assume they are unpredictable. If you see a ball on the road, you are expected to slow down, because it is an indication that there are children.

Aside from "the fault of the cyclist" presumably being a slipup:
I'd take it more as saying, cyclists will know to be careful because they don't want to end up in the hospital. As such, the law pushes more on the drivers, who wouldn't be harmed as much and thus need a bit more incentive for caution.
Getting it balanced is a bit difficult. It's a good rule of thumb, but nobody respects that kinda law when the cyclist is clearly to blame.

$120,- fine from the police. I went to the police station the next day to check if those cops had split the money into their own pockets, but nope the fine was at the station.
My boyfriend studied gemmology in LA. We had taken our dog with us. In the house next to us on Sunset Drive/Boulevard were several student apartments. I always saw dogs or/and cats on their balconies when walking our dog.
Thought something is weird as never heard them, but dog owners cross paths quite fast, so I asked.
Was told that they only can rent an apartment with dog/cat/birds when they let their vocal cords cut and claws removed by a vet so they will never grow back😱😢😢.
Was so shocked, but will not write what I felt and think about such US-restrictions.

Well, there is a lot to say so
      1) It is always a voluntary process. The person to be euthanized must be the one requesting the euthanasation or have indicated in the past at which conditions he or she wants to be euthanized.
      2) At the determination and request of the euthanasation, you must be of sound mind (as if you were making your will)
      3) You must have been diagnosed with a progressive, currently non-curable disease that causes suffering and for which there is no effective treatment available (anymore). This disease must be confirmed by a second opinion.
      4) Then and only then can you ask a doctor to euthanize you. Even then there may be doctors who will not comply for, say, religious reasons, but in that case, that doctor must do his best to find another doctor who will perform the euthanasia.
      5) There are special rules for children up to the age of 18. In that case the parents must request the euthanasia, and when possible, the child must agree... this is mostly done in cases of metabolic diseases and/ or cancer that may not be treatable. Any other diagnose will probably get rejected as reason for euthanasia

Euthanasia is such a misunderstood concept in the USA, because it is delibertly misconstrued. Here how it is actually done in the Netherlands:
    Source: central government
*Euthanasia and the law: dying with a doctor's help*
Doctors can help a patient die in special cases. This is called euthanasia or assisted suicide. Doctors do this only if a patient requests it. The Euthanasia Act contains all the rules that apply to euthanasia or assisted suicide. The official name of the euthanasia law is the Act on Testing of Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Wtl).
*Difference between euthanasia and assisted suicide*
In euthanasia, a doctor gives the patient a lethal drug.
In assisted suicide, the doctor gives a lethal drug to the patient. But the patient takes it himself.
    *Euthanasia is punishable*
Ending someone else's life is punishable by law. Even if the patient himself requests it from the doctor. Sometimes people no longer want to live. For example, because they are seriously ill, in pain or have difficulty breathing. Sometimes a doctor is allowed to perform euthanasia or assisted suicide. For example, if someone will not get better. Or if nothing more can be done about the suffering. The doctor is not punishable if he complies with all 6 due diligence requirements of the euthanasia law (see below this article).
    *Only patient can request euthanasia*
Euthanasia is possible only if the patient requests it himself. Family or friends of the patient cannot ask for it. This is different with children.
If a child is between the ages of 12 and 16, the parents or guardian must also give permission.
If a child is between the ages of 16 and 18, the parents must be involved in the decision.
    *Writing down euthanasia wishes*
A patient can write down that he wants euthanasia. A written down request for euthanasia can take the place of a conversation. For example, if a person later cannot tell you his wish himself. The patient writes down when he would like euthanasia. This is called a written euthanasia request. Or a living will.
Just a conversation or a statement on paper is not enough. All 6 due diligence requirements of the euthanasia law must be met. The doctor reviews whether all the requirements apply. Even if they do, he does not have to grant euthanasia.
*What conditions can euthanasia be used for?*
Most people who request and receive euthanasia are so seriously ill that they will not get better. A person does not have to be near death before euthanasia is allowed. By law, euthanasia is only allowed in people who are suffering from a medical cause. For example:
    In a request for euthanasia for a psychiatric condition;
    In a request for euthanasia for dementia;
When requesting euthanasia for more than 1 serious condition.
*When can euthanasia not be done?*
By law, euthanasia is not allowed when people consider their lives "complete," or are "tired of living. And not when people are healthy.
*Doctor does not have to cooperate with euthanasia*
By law, no one has a right to euthanasia. So a doctor is also allowed to refuse a request for euthanasia. Even if the patient has written down what he wants. Or if the patient's situation fits all the requirements of the law. If a doctor does not want to perform the euthanasia himself, he must always tell the patient. Then the patient can go to another doctor. Sometimes the doctor sends a patient to the Euthanasia Expert Center.
This is where people can go with a euthanasia request if their own (family) physician is unable or unwilling to carry out the request. However, the patient's request must meet all due diligence requirements.
    *Doctors report euthanasia*
A doctor who has performed euthanasia must always report it immediately to the municipal coroner. This is a doctor who investigates the cause of death.
The report of euthanasia then goes to the Regional Euthanasia Review Committee (RTE). This committee evaluates whether the euthanasia was performed according to the law. The euthanasia review procedure can be found on the RTE website.
*Committee checks whether euthanasia was carried out according to the law*
Every region of the Netherlands has an RTE. Each committee includes a doctor, an ethicist and a lawyer. The committees look at whether doctors have complied with the requirements of the law. The committees post their verdict on euthanasia on their website. You can't see who the verdict is about.
    *Careless euthanasia*
Is a doctor not complying with the law? Then the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM) or the Inspectorate can launch an investigation and go to court. The punishment the doctor may face varies:
Careless euthanasia can result in a prison sentence of 12 years or less.
Careless assisted suicide can result in a prison sentence of 3 years or less.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*The 6 care requirements of the euthanasia law*
The law states that a physician may cooperate in euthanasia or assisted suicide. However, the doctor must then follow all the due diligence requirements of the law. The law also states how the doctor's work must be checked afterwards.
    The 6 requirements of care
Euthanasia and assisted suicide are allowed only if a doctor is sure that the 6 requirements of the law apply.
*1. Voluntary and well thought out*
The doctor must be convinced that the patient's request for euthanasia is voluntary. And that the patient has thought about it carefully (deliberately). Thus, the request must really come from the patient himself. No one should force or pressure the patient. Not family or friends. Also, the question should not suddenly arise, for then the desire for euthanasia could suddenly disappear again. Therefore, talk to a (family) physician about the wish on time and regularly.
    *2. Unbearable and hopeless suffering*
The doctor must be convinced that the patient is suffering hopelessly and unbearably. When assessing hopelessness, the patient's diagnosis and outlook are central. There is hopelessness if:
    the patient cannot be cured;
the patient is suffering unnecessarily and this cannot be reduced.
The doctor also considers how much improvement a treatment can still give. And how difficult the treatment is for the patient.
Unbearable suffering is mainly about how the patient experiences it. This is different for everyone. For example, from the diseases a person has. The doctor must be able to empathize with the patient and his suffering.
*3. Inform about the situation and outlook*
The doctor must give the patient information about the medical situation. And what his situation will look like in the future. It is important that the patient understands all useful information about the situation. This will allow the patient to make a good choice. The doctor must verify that the patient knows enough. And whether the patient has understood the information.
    *4. No reasonable other solution*
The doctor must decide with the patient that there is no reasonable other solution to the patient's situation. The doctor must always see if there are no other ways to make the suffering less severe. This does not mean that the patient should try all possible treatments.
Does the patient suffer a lot of discomfort and pain from a particular treatment? Then that counts in the assessment. Sometimes a treatment is very severe and the patient's situation improves only slightly. Then the doctor and patient may decide together that the treatment stops.
    *5. Consulting an independent doctor*
The patient's doctor must consult at least 1 independent doctor. This doctor is called a consultant. The consultant must see the patient. And assess whether the doctor has complied with the standard of care. Independence means that the consultant is allowed to give his or her own opinion about the patient and the doctor. The consultant must not be involved in the patient's treatment. Or have a personal relationship with the doctor or the patient.
    *6. Medically careful execution*
Finally, the doctor must perform the euthanasia (or assisted suicide) in a medically careful manner, for example, with the right drugs and in the right steps. Doctors and pharmacists have created a guideline for this purpose: "Performing euthanasia and assisted suicide. "The guideline contains requirements on how doctors should properly perform euthanasia and assisted suicide.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So please understand, it is only done at the wish of a patient and to end suffering (with a large load of restructions to safeguard the process).

    -
Wow all of that in a little over 10 minutes, nice work!
    A few comments:
    -
1: helmets and light (and bell's) on a bike.
Helmets are not mandatory because the Dutch figures show that there are surprisingly few head injuries among cyclists. Probably because we are used to cycling a lot in cities, and they also have the infrastructure for this. About bicycle lighting: priority is to be visible, to be noticed, It's quite logical because of the preferred place in the legislation.
    2: Emergency drills
Well actually they are not drills. The monthly siren testing is a check weather they work, and can be heard throughout. The phone message is also a check. So that when didn't receive you can report this.
3: 3 singles renting one house.
I do not know for sure but I strongly doubt this is a city-law in Amsterdam. It surely is not a state law. It's perfectly legal to rent a house and subletting it to others, providing the owner consents. The latter is probably the reason, not the legislation.
4 and 5: No addition or comment.
    6: euthanasia
This may look like a crazy law but it has numerous strict conditions that are very strictly enforced. I know it's wrong to compare, but if my dog can't move anymore and is clearly in a lot of pain with no prospect of improvement it is inhumane to maintain this. I would, rightly, be held accountable (But every comparison is flawed).
    7: cannabis and mushrooms
Personally I also see it as a crooked case, and a temporary one until a better law comes (worked on).
8: criminal offence to publicly offence (...)
"But as soon as it affects somebody else "they're coming to get you", well stated! That is the key phrase about freedom.
    9: Weapons
Although criminals can find their own way in this, this should be law in all countries.
    10: urinating in canals
In fact, it is forbidden to urinate anywhere in the public space within built-up areas (city areas).
(I'm not sure about the current law, but in London there surely was (or is) a law that gives pregnant women the right to use a police officer's (Bobby) helmet to pee in.)
    11: fireworks
Though more and more locally prohibited, sadly this is not only in Amsterdam.
    12: prostitution
While this may seem strange, one of the main reasons for this is to withdraw prostitution from illegality to protect the prostitutes from exploitation, or even slavery.
    -
Sorry for the long epistle, but well, so many topics...

Coming from the states to Amsterdam and seeing nobody wearing a helmet while biking blew me away. It doesn’t seem safe! Plus people would look at you weirdly in the states if you are wearing a helmet while biking plus I do think you are required to wear one in most places.

    • @baskoning9896
      @baskoning9896 3 года назад +3

Let me be blunt. Do you wear a helmet while walking up and down your stairs? No? Same for us on bikes. It would be as mind boggling for us to wear a helmet on a bike, as it would be to wear one while traversing a stair. Also: this is not a random decision: if people wear bike helmets, they feel safer, hence take more risks, hence get into more accidents (where, lets be fair, a helmet is not going to help you much).
Its the same logic as to why we plant trees next to roads, where the US often choses for wide, and open roads. The wide and open roads give the impression that its safe to drive hard. So people drive hard. So they get killed often. Where with the small roads where you have to navigate trees and such: you have to drive slowly: and look carefully while driving. Reducing the number of deaths.
We learn our kids to be responsible: look out for themselves. Our canals often have no railings. Amazing to americans: 'what if you drive in'. Why would you drive in. Thats stupid. Nobody drives into the canals.
Bikes are heavily protected by law (hit one with a car, and you will notice, even if its not your fault: bikes are deemed 'soft targets' so you, in your hard car, should be driving slow enough to spot any of them going crazy in front of your car to stop). Bikes have their own lanes. They have to have the bell (alike the horn in a car, to prevent accidents for example when someone walks on the bikelane), and the lights in front and back (to be more visible for other traffic in the dark).
Its super safe to bike in the Netherlands. The only ones you will see biking with a helmet are Americans (mormons noticably, that are doing their preaching in NL), and people with health/mental problems (epilepsy or heavy down syndrome for example).

technically cyclists are not less wrong, then any other party involved.
its just that in Dutch law the operator of a motor vehicle has what is called the "Burden of Proof" as long as you can proof you were in the right, you will be in the right. if you can not, the cyclist is presumed innocent.
the real reason why bicycle helmets are not required by law, is because Dutch researchers have done hundreds of tests that show you are more likely to receive a serious neck injury when wearing one at slow speeds.
going along a flat surface at slow speeds if you make a fall the helmet actually has a greater chance of injuring you rather then preventing injury, this is due to the chance of your neck bending at awkward angles with the helmet on.
also in the US you cant "just walk into a Walmart and buy a gun" if you have not gone through a previous background check. if you have not done one i believe at Walmart its a 2 Dollar administration fee. not filling out the paperwork truthfully will subject you to criminal prosecution, the form aks for things like name, address, and Social Security number. It also asks about race, gender, and US citizenship status.
the employee will check if the address matches the one on your US issued drivers license which has to be valid at the time of filling out the form.
after you have correctly filled out the form, the Walmart employee wil run it trough a police database. and they wait for a green light from the police. this can take up to an hour depending on the Walmart i guess.
and only after that, can you actually go and buy a gun at Walmart.
its also not like just any Walmart employee can sell you a gun. it has to be a vetted employee that has gone trough the necessary training and more often then is only at the store on certain days.
pretending like you can just waltz in and buy a gun, bit disingenuous. that is not to say that it is not much harder in the Netherlands yes.
but hey guess what, you can buy an illegal handgun in The Netherlands with as much ease as you can in the USA, in both countries it is a case of knowing the right people. difference is, here in The Netherlands you can't defend yourself from someone that has purchased an illegal gun. even if you are a law abiding citizen.

I think the reasons to protect cyclists in case of an accident are more practical. Cyclists (as well as pedestrians) don't need a driver license and they don't need insurance. So yes, that's why cars or other motorized vehicles are always liable in case of an accident, but that doesn't always mean that they're also guilty. Noteworthy is that about half of all traffic deaths as well as injuries caused by a traffic accident are cyclists. I really wish cyclists would drive more defensively than they actually do.

Belts' on bikes are not required. Except for small children that are transported on the back or front. They need to be in an approved safety seat (that includes belts). Maybe you should read up on liabilities in traffic in NL.
Article 185 of the Road Law: The objective of this article in the law is to protect vulnerable road users from financial damage caused by drivers of motorised vehicles. Because due to the differences between motorised and non-motorised road users, it is very likely that the latter will suffer more and more severe damage and/or injuries when both are involved in a traffic accident. The law also considers the fact that drivers are obliged to be insured for such damage and non-motorised road users are not. Children under the age of 14 are always protected.
Both Cyclists and pedestrians are protected under this law.

Young children are also by definition ranked as vulnerable.

    • @DenUitvreter
      @DenUitvreter 3 года назад +1

As I understand it the protection of the cyclist in private law is treefold.
      - The burden of proof is on the motorist, he is otherwise assumed to have caused the accident. That's a practically important legal technicality but just a legal technicality nontheless.
      - The motorist, as a trained operator of a heavy high speed machine, has a bigger responsability to avoid an accident than 12-year olds teenaging about. The motorist can't act like they will always follow the rules because they don't, the motorist has to deal with the daily reality of traffic and that includes irresponsible kids and drunk students without lights.
      - The motorist is the one causing most of the damage by his choice for this mode of transportation. If two cyclists collide it's usually just a matter of getting up again and bend the fender stay back in shape or something. It's the car that requires an expensive paint job or caused the serious injury, the cyclist's error merely caused a collision, not the consequences.
This works through the mandatory insurance for motorists. The insurance company pays up and increases the premium for the uncareful motorist, so careful drivers who succeed at avoiding accidents with cyclists save money. No need to explain how this works out on Dutch drivers.
Criminal law is diffrent, but in that also counts that the motorist must be aware of what damage his vehicle is capable of and that he has to expect certain behaviour from cyclists that is not according to the rules.

When a cyclist cycles through a red traffic light and he gets hit by a car, the cyclist is fined for driving through a red traffic light but the driver is to blame for the accident, The motorist should have assessed the situation better and should have seen the cyclist approaching.

Even when a cyclist is at fault, the car driver can only claim 50% of his damage on the cyclist ! Because law considers that 'a car driver should be extra careful with weaker traffic participatns like pedestrians and cyclists.'.

@@aWanderlustForLife As driver you have a drivers license. There you are taught that cyclists are weak road users, also that cyclists can make unexpected movements consciously, but also unconsciously.

@@allws9683 It is not correct. There is no maximum of 50%. If a car hits a cyclist or a pedestrian the car driver has to prove he did nothing wrong. Most of the times that is very difficult.
An example: if someone is walking on a highway in the middle of the night and is hit by a car, i am sure the driver did nothing wrong. The driver could niet expect that.
But a driver van expect a cyclist not to stop for a red light. As we are all also cyclist once in a while, we know cyclist often do not stop for red lights.

  • @CobisTaba
    @CobisTaba 2 года назад

The ‘cycles is not at fault’ is actually a little different; the law is that the ‘stronger’ road user has the burden of proof. So if the cyclist is really at fault and you can proof it, you’re fine.
Also, the rule where three singles cannot live together is not a law, only specific cities. They have it not against frat houses, but to make it less interesting for investors to buy all the homes.

  • @afcansf5996
    @afcansf5996 Год назад

Cyclist deserved the protection, but it isnt the case anymore that the car driver are automaticly guilty, cause cyclist did became reckless and thought they were untouchable. So its good that laws has been changed, yes they still enjoy extra protection but in the case of an accident; they will look who actually was at fault. Gun laws are way to strict over here, not to mention this is cause of public safety but because the government in the past was afraid for an uprising due huge tax reforms; which werent going to go down wel with population.

Very quick tl;dr on the cycling helmet thing. You're right.
We have a ton of things that make participating in traffic (regardless of vehicle/feet) much safer.
So if we would start to wear helmets the number and severity of head injuries would actually *increase*
Speaking of bike bells, does yours go 'ding' or 'trrrring'? :P
    Yea... "Conversation starter"
Me: "Would you like to die?"
Other person: "WHAT?!" *backs off slowly*
Yeah, the drug laws are behind the times. Should've legalized it a good decade and a half ago or something.
It's not just weird, it's also harmful. I recall a man suing himself because he used drugs, grew 5 plants for personal use; all 'gedoogd'.
But every now and then the cops would get 'tipped off' and they'd have to go to his place, confiscate the stuff and plants and then leave again.
So the guy sued himself and the judge, may he occasionally wake up from his sleep for no reason for the rest of their life, did nothing and preserved the status quo :(
    USA, crazy? I don't know what you're-
USA: Kinder egg - no, too dangerous
USA: Semi-automatic rifle - right next to the Back 2 School section
They often say that the no canal peeing law is to prevent people from drunk peeing in the canal and falling in (a real danger), but 'wildplassen' is already illegal. I'm also not aware of any exception for pregnant women.

that air-raid alarm is so annoying, I don't know what others think about it, but for me: if something ever happens I will never believe it.. I don't see the point of that stupid alarm, to let it every month hear.. for people who just come here, from a war zone, (military or civilian) they are likely to have a stroke as soon as they hear it.. (so silly this alarm).
O,yea.. one more thing.. we don't have hunters as a jop here in the Netherlands.. Killing a animal is almost the same as killing a human. If u do kill a animal here, prepare for a long time in punishment.
