You asked for it - here is my second iteration of the sax snob episodes. Please remember that I am not being serious in the video; the snob character is the embodiment of many ridiculous things I've heard in my undergrad about the contrasting genre.

I’ll say that creston and especially glazunov wouldn’t dig the jazz interpretations of their pieces but Ibert probably would’ve been all over it. Not only because the jazz version sounded better but ibert was inspired by jazz music when he wrote his saxophone concerto. The “jazz” interpretation of the creston and glazunov sounding better than the classical versions was definitely not meant to be (even though imo they did sound better) but the “jazz” interpretation sounding 300% better than the classical version of the ibert was no coincidence. To me I've found sax is such a unique instrument because you can pick it up and within a few months be playing with a constant jazz feel (both in swing and note choice) that seems alien on other instruments. Perhaps it's because my own ears tell me 'this IS the jazz sound' when I hear it due to only listening to it in that context, but it feels very natural. Comparitavely, I started on guitar and it took me years to learn how to play jazz, mostly because it's not solely designed as solo instrument, and getting proper jazz feel with your wrist takes a long time.
Also holy shit, I had no idea you could make the saxophone sound like the classical guy, it literally sounds like a different instrument.

Much as the discussions are no doubt tiring for players, it just goes to show the range and diversity of what you can get from the instrument. Awesome to see examples of what directions you can take with it creatively.

@@ericolens3 classical music is anything but rebellious. Jazz is the rebellious style of music 😂 it rebels against the strict guidelines of sheet music. 1920’s? The lost generation? Anti-Victorian mentality? Ever heard of it? Jazz stems from the loss of morality that the First World War caused. The kids rebelling and listening and dancing to jazz. Flapper girls and drinking and promiscuity. To say classical music is rebellious is to say that Coltrane or Davis wrote Beethoven’s 5th. It’s ridiculous and completely not true 😂 you can not like jazz that’s perfectly fine, but don’t act like classical music is rebellious. Thats poster child music 😂
