    Two days ago I made and played a reskinned Rune Knight gnoll. Concept: Monster Hunter. Will add 2 lvls of artificer. All abilities will be reskinned as magical weapons/armor that the character is wearing. Got a shield made from what looks like the back of a large crocodile, a warpick that's a femur bone with a large beak as the head. Etc etc
    Oh and thank you for an awesome show, best dnd lore podcast.

    I remember in 2nd edition, carrion crawlers would freak us out almost as much as a mind flayer. And earn the same kind of concentrated firepower when it showed up.

    I remembered one more thing I wanted to tell you guys; thank you so much for the show. You are with me while doing the dishes, cleaning, on my way to work. I've listened to all the through all of the episode during these especially dark winter months #screwcovid-19.
    On occasion, during especially good episodes I've continued listening while taking a shower, which in a sense means you've taken a shower with a tall, blond, Swedish guy. Feel free to use that in your CV should you ever need it.

    I like to think that a Carrion Crawler can roll itself into a ball and just mow over adventurers Indiana Jones boulder-style. Imagine having that come at you while you're exploring the Underdark! ;)

    I remember back in 1st ed, these things didn't have any form of damaging attack. Literally *all* they could do was paralyze you. And then what? Just gum you until you prayed for a wandering monster to come along and finish you off?

    I ran a pretty fun encounter recently that used Carrion Crawlers. It was a deadly encounter in the main keep of an evil lord the PCs had made enemies out of (rather, maybe I should say it followed this encounter). He lured them inside by having his men march away from his fort (seemingly to pillage and plunder a nearby village) so the party would think he was vulnerable, only for him to reveal that his elite soldiers were laying in wait for them inside and the rest of his men were marching back.
    In the middle of the throne room where combat was occurring, there was a big pit that went down into the caverns below the keep. These caverns were used for a variety of purposes (breeding monsters, holding prisoners, etc.). Whenever a player was dropped to 0, rather than leaving them making death saves the body would quickly be dumped into the pit (the fall making them automatically fail one save and threatened to outright kill the lower health party members).
    Eventually the party all were down the pit, either from being knocked to 0 and being dumped in, being pushed in, or jumping in willingly after it became apparent that the party was losing and that the people in the pit probably needed help anyways. So everyone was in the pit, very injured, some with lingering injuries, when it is revealed that the chamber they are in is filled with Carrion Crawlers meant to dispose of their bodies. The party was just able to get out of the encounter alive and escape deeper into the caverns, which wasn't exactly safe, per say, but one of them had the foresight to use magic to make it look like they had died in the chamber so the lord wouldn't send his men after them.
    It was a really intense couple of encounters that really increased how threatening this villain was to the party (previously they were very confident they could kill him basically whenever they wanted).

    Do you ever think these wizards opening portals to the far realm think "oh, should I do this in a demi-plane cut off from my primary reality?" and then go "nah, fuck it" and blast open Firestorm Peak, dooming an entire crystal sphere to be pulled in to the insanity outside of the multiverse

    • @DarkEnigma1115
      @DarkEnigma1115 3 года назад

      Wizards able to open demi-planes are at the power level where they are aware of Gold and Silver Dragons, so all they’re likely concerned of is:
      Is it able to kill me without me being able to escape?
      Can it seal me in an inescapable prison?
      Is it stronger than a Silver/Gold Dragon?
      Meanwhile, if they open a demi-plane and do their experiments there, there is a chance that they accidentally summon something that would trap them in the demiplane indefinitely, a lesson taught by none other than Strahd Von Zarovich.

    Hmmm I'm using Otyugs as sewercleaners in my homebrew setting, but carrion crawlers would be useful as well.

    • @NamelessKing1597
      @NamelessKing1597 3 года назад

      Otyughs make more sense in the sewer, they would actually eat the sewage. Catacombs are the best place to have infested by Carrion crawlers, lots of dead bodies to eat and lots of ceilings to fall from.

    I would love, if those were just a caterpillar state of some giant butterfly monster
    and for living in numbers, its not that uncommon in animal kingdom. plenty of animals, from insects and spiders, to snakes and crocodilians, live in groups, and while they dont help each other directly, numbers allow them to stay safer, and sometimes happen to take down bigger pray items (even, if theyll fight over it, if there isnt enough)

    I have liked and commented! I continue to serve the creepy crawly dungeoncast!
    Bleck! Get those damn things away from me! I hate bugs. Need to smite every one I see. I dread to say it, but I dont even want knowledge of these disgusting things. I just want them dead. I've fought fomorians, demons, slimes, and all other manner of horrific creatures, but I havevto draw a line somewhere. These things are just... yuck! Apologies milords, ill see you next week when all of the bugs are gone. Im gonna go kill bandits, or something. Just as long as there aren't any crawlers. Only thing worse would be a spider...
    Ok bit done, partially inspired by my own hate of bugs, haha,
    Will, just wanna say during that section where you were talking about playing a ranger who really leans in on the monster stuff. Taking stuff from monsters and making new stuff out of it to hunt other monsters. You guys basically just described monster hunter. Kill a monster to make armor amd weapons out of it so you can hunt bigger monsters and then turn them into armor and weapons so you can hunt even bigger monsters and it just keeps going like that in a loop.
    Loved the mention of the ghouls from the witcher 3. Such a great game. Anyway thats a really important thing for writers to think about, how do monsters amd creatures react to what humans do? In this case battlefields. Its a cool concept that just helps bring a world alive.
