- Taylor Swift’s beef that started from her masters being sold:
“I don’t know why her father didn’t tell her. Her father owned a piece of the company that sold it… I’m thinking, ‘Your father benefitted from the sale.’ … The guy who’s buying masters is betting the the new format change is only going to lead to more value over time. The person selling it is thinking it’s not.” - Steve Stoute

Swifts father (Scott) owned 5% of B's company and was excluded from any discussion of the sale of Taylor's catalogue...this documented per other sources - don't be a source of misinformation here as if you know what Scott knew...it was Scott who figured out Taylor's original contract terms that has allowed Taylor to rerecord her catalogue...Scott was brilliant 20 years ago.
The Late, GREAT Prince, used to talk about this happening to "Artists", all the time.
Folks are now catching up.
yeah he had changed his name to that symbol specifically to get out of his contract with Warner Bros.
It's hard htough when you are just starting out and any first record deal seems great.
Not everyone has the clout or luxury to demand such things. It just isn’t something everyone can do
so true prince was way ahead of his time the goat musician and performer hands down
Thank you.
so glad he mentioned her father's partial ownership of the record label.. funny how little details like that usually get left out
That's usually what women do. "leave out details"
Her dad was under NDA, was legally not able to disclose the transaction.
She wouldn't look like the victim, if she exposed that MAJOR information. Basic female move. She did the same thing with Kanye when she never mentioned that Kanye called her & asked her how she felt about the lyric he had about her THAT SHE OK'ED! If it wasn't for Kim recording & letting out that conversation, Taylor would've never mentioned that VITAL information!
@@shadrinbien6972 my point wasn't about the disclosure of the transaction
I'm glad she won. Men now a days are so shady.
I wish that brother didn't make assumptions and if he didn't know the facts not speak on it at all. Yes, Taylor's father owned 5% of the record label which was worth around $300k when he purchased that stake. Also, he purposely did not attend the meetings regarding the sale of the masters because he was being asked to sign an NDA, he knew something was up and did not want to be in a position to keep it from his daughter. He was never apart of those meetings regarding the sale so he did not have any details to give her. And yes, he earned $15M from the sale of the record company because he owned a 5% stake in it, there is nothing wrong or underhanded in that.
Exactly!!!!!
And we supposed to believe your take on it because?
@@rattlertech That's not my take, it's what actually happened. I don't have a dog in that fight and not a fan of either party but the facts were outlined for anyone who actually cares to know the truth instead of going off emotions and hate for people I don't like.
@@Rebel-ct2pq You're right, there are many articles and information that covered what happened. UMG (her current label) was one of the frontrunners bidding for the label- I think Braun's bid took some by surprise. I doubt she would have felt comfortable trying to bid for the label (and we don't know if she had the liquidity to fund it or wanted the risk to be part of a group). Even Toby Keith (one of the wealthiest country stars at the time)- who held a share of the Big Machine label and had a separate label (that started at the same time) that flopped.
Her 2nd manager gave an example of a typical split of sales- 85% to the label, 15% to the artist (expenses are taken out of the artist's share). [I'm not sure of her contract]. She signed in the era (2005) where physical albums were still sold- but it was slumping from digital sales - which lessened the profit and piracy. Her former label's revenue before it was sold was rumored to be 80% from her catalog. The Label head owned 90% of the shares. 92% voted to sell the company to Ithaca (Braun).
@@rattlertech😂😂😂
She didn’t know about the sale because her dad was on the board. Board meetings were confidential & thus couldn’t be shared with her. To avoid a conflict of interest, her father did not attend the board meeting. So he wouldn’t have been tempted to tell her and break the law. He didn’t have anything to tell her. That’s why she didn’t know. She wanted to buy the masters but I understand it was a business decision. The label needed her masters in order to sell the label. At that time, her catalog made up 75% of the label’s entire revenue so without her masters the label was worthless. The label couldn’t sell them to her and then have a label that was marketable to sell. Once that was sold, she decided to remake them while trying to negotiate with record companies to allow artists to own their work while still making it advantageous to them. Taylor writes all her work. All her songs are personal to her, a part of her life, her memories, emotions. They mean everything to her. Having her life’s work taken from her was devastating. So, she bet on herself and spent the time & money to re-make her entire career to own it. UnLike a lot of other artists cashing in on their publishing rights and revenues, she is betting on herself and investing in what she sees as her legacy. She is from a family of investment bankers, that’s what they do. They invest. And she invested in herself and it has paid off like nothing before in the industry. All analysts told her it wouldn’t work, only one analyst that I saw / read agreed on paper it was a bad idea for her that could backfire. But ended their analysis with “but I know better than to bet against Swift”. And that’s the conclusion. Like her or hate her. Don’t bet against her. She fits no algorithm.
U actually believe that! She knew
@@missdime7433 well there is no evidence to support that she did know, but evidence does support that she didn't know. there's that.

Uncle Shay please don't allow people to speak reckless on your platforms... she knew the masters were being sold and offered to buy the masters and big machine decided to add caveats to sell to her (allegedly conditions like her recording a new album in order to reclaim each old album), clearly to extend her stay on the label, she wanted to leave the label, the label didn't want that because she was their cash cow... they seemingly decided to "punish her" by selling to someone who she notedly disliked... she signed with label at 14 or 15, whether her dad had a stake in the company or not is largely irrelevant because it's not his company (likely he injected capital (finance background) to 'leg up' her recording career... she had a publishing deal before the recording deal, she owns and always owned her publishing so she still could and did mess with the masters' owners by blocking all publishing portion of licencing for films, commercials, etc... basically the holdings that bought her "cash cow" masters backfired, because when they realised she was gonna block them in perpetuity, they tried to sell to her ...she NOPED them and continues to rerecord, she's rerecorded 4 of her first 6 albums have been rereleased w/taylor's version distinction, she has 2 more to rerelease... she owns the masters for albums on new label (republic) ...all artiste should take this route, it's disgraceful to not allow artiste to own their masters after a while, i totally understand the label initially "holding ownership" to recoup investing in an artiste... but a 6 or so year cap on a project seems fair enough, then revert ownership automatically to artiste
Her father DID know, and SHE knew. She was trying to buy her masters but she told her best friend Karlie Kloss...Kloss told her husband and her husband helped Scooter Braun buy them. Taylor felt betrayed and ended the friendship.

It’s been out there for years that they notified those vested in a meeting a few days before it went public. Scott Swift was confirmed to not be present on that call. He was invited but didn’t attend. Sooo he didn’t know. And wouldn’t you think they would have had some professional courtesy to have a conversation with her? She’s the only reason they got what they got.
Not even professional courtesy. On the Tonight Show she said she previously told them if they ever wanted to sell, she would buy it. Then they later sold it to Braun without offering it to her first. They sold it to someone else instead of offering it to the original artist who wanted to buy it and had the money to do so.
@@meizhou9279 The only deal Scott Borchetta offered her was to earn one masters back for every new album she turned it. They would own her into perpetuity. She walked away from that deal.
@@Rebel-ct2pqit was a 10 year deal and they already own her music in perpetuity.
The deal was trash but she could’ve been more creative in buying it. The company was on the table, that’s what was being sold, not specifically her masters. She could’ve bought the company her net worth is a little more than scooter Braun who managed to do it.
@@combcomedy Actually Scooter Braun had investors in order to purchase Big Machine Records. That's the thing about net worth, unless it is coming from the entertainer themselves, I don't believe what is on the internet. Just because a celebrity generates $X in revenue, doesn't mean they are worth that. It doesn't account for taxes paid, recording company's cut, agency's cut, and in Taylor's case , payroll for the hundred's of people who works for her company etc. I get what you're saying, but I think if buying the label made sense, she would have. She was the only known artist signed to that label and still a relatively small label company.
@@Rebel-ct2pq That's literally why I said he gathered the funds. Net worth does have an impact when doing investments. Net worth measures someone's financial strength and ability to repay debt. A substantial net worth gives lenders confidence to provide funds and can even be used as collateral for loans, eg Elon getting almost 40billion in debt financing to buy twitter.
Also there's still about 20 artists on there. I just checked the website.
Stoute need to speak on fiduciary. Her father could not tell her as he signed an NDA upon purchasing part of the company. Mr Swift is ethical. That is how things are run ethically.
0:56 I'm sure her Dad told her. And I'm sure she had an opportunity to buy those Masters. But once the price goes over a certain point, it's a math problem. It cost her less money to rerecord every note and resing every lyric on every album, than it would have cost to buy the Masters. Now she ownes the masters to the new recordings of her old songs. And her fans will listen to those instead of the old recordings. It's actually super smart.
That's not true he owned a percentage of the company. The company refused to sell to her. She said that out of her own mouth. They don't have to sell the masters back to the artist. A lot of companies don't sell the masters back to artists. It doesn't matter if they had the money or not. Micheal jackson bought up everyone's masters. He had the influence to do so and the money. Alot of those artists tried to buy their masters before they were sold. Taylor dad didn't own a big enough percentage to do anything. Michael Jackson owned 50 percent of Sony at one point. That's more pull then Taylor swift dad had he only owned like 5 percent of the company who owned her masters. Thats like you owning 5 percent of Microsoft. Trying to influence their decisions 🤣🤣
He would have broke his fiduciary duty as a board member and could be charged for insider trading. Very serious thing. He literally still can't speak about it as part of the deal.
@@deontaedarden9579 it was the guy who bought them from the original masters holders (her Dad's company) that refused to sell them to her, not the original master holders. The beef started with this new owner and Taylor. At the end of the day, it cost her less to redo everything than the new owner paid. Hilarious loss for him 😂
@@TrapTech Ya, everyone upholds their feduciary duties. No one insider trades. And fathers don't talk to their daughters in private. Right? 😂
@thahacksaw I know the story. Either way, her dad didn't have the pull to get anything done. She still didn't get her original recordings . My original point stands that her dad didn't have the power or influence to make anything happen. Neither did she, hence why she re recorded everything. Did I say the original master holder? That wasn't even brought up. The story is known. it's no secret. There's no need to try to throw in something that's irrelevant . That's just like me telling you about micheal. But telling you the original company was atv, then Sony. That's irrelevant, Sony is the current company.
Her father was a shareholder. They had a shareholder meeting which he declined BECAUSE OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST. IT WOULD BR CALLED INSIDER TRADING! < that’s why he couldn’t tell her because HE DIDNT KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH IT. Even if he did. He can’t tell her anything because it’s private company information.
Great Content! Very Educational!

Taylor's music being sold ended up being a huge bonus for her! She re-recorded her albums and they sold better than they did the first time, and helped her to be unquestionably the biggest star in the world. Taylor made 9 figures from Spotify alone in 2023.
Taylor’s father only owned 4% of big machine records. As such a small minority owner of the private company, he may not have been aware of the pending sale until very shortly before it actually occurred.
Taylor Swift knew that Barchetta would sell her Masters, IT WAS ---WHO--- HE CHOOSE TO SELL. ,, SCOTTER"
Scooter was Kayne Meneger, and he was one of the main figures when the beef between Taylor Kayne and Kim.
Scooter instructed all the Artists under his management to Bash Taylor Swift --Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato......and others. Only Ariana Grande didn't want to do it.
And then Scott Barcheta after all this drama with Scotter, Kim, and Kayne sells his Label to SCOTTER.
THE ENEMY NOW HAS HER MASTERS, that is why Taylor is rerecording her Albums. Don't forget that whoever owns the Masters can also say to you what songs you can perform or not.
Her Father has had 3% of the Label and he also didn't know until Scott Barcheta did the sale.

You're looking at it from your lense bc you will never touch that type of money. Taylor wanted her masters for good reason. Do you research about micheal jackson owning masters of other artists. People really got to know the music business because I think when they sold Taylor Swift's masters it became too expensive for her to buy and they were never going to sell it back to her anyways. So it was sold, the family gets a cut, and she plans to re-record all her albums. She got money in the sell and the re-release.
They offered her a deal to earn one masters back for every new album she turned in. She walked away because that deal was ridiculous and they would forever owned her.
They didn’t sell her masters. They sold the label which included her masters. They could never sell her her masters because they needed her masters revenue to sell the company. So no, they didn’t become too expensive to buy, she wasn’t offered the opportunity to buy them. She didn’t make any money on the sale of her masters.
I'm so tired of people saying the word ARTIST. An artist paints pictures. A rapper raps. A singer sings.

Like/dislike TS. It’s hard to empathize with her since she and her family grew up wealthy, privileged, and used their money and efforts to support her dreams to be a big time singer/artist. With that background, she whines about other girls not liking her or not having friends growing up.
She has excellent PR team and is very smart and manipulative to weaponizes her fans on her behalf.
I grew up in a frugal household, my siblings and I started working with my parents when we were kids to make ends meet. We worked, went to school and that’s pretty much it. I’m grateful (no complaints). Each of us attended colleges, have/ had good jobs that enabled us to own our own places and live solid lives.
That's why she's bigger than everybody else because her father is in the industry.
It takes far more than just nepotism. She has to be able to sing and perform. Nobody that likes her listens to her because her daddy was in the industry.
Her father is not in the music industry. That man had to blow up ballons and fish plastic ducks out the river to get Taylor the smallest, most irrelevant gigs 😂 He is a stockbroker, he makes investments for living. So he decided to invest in his daughter.

Yeah, Taylor be lying to her audience and the press on the regular.
No she isn’t. What on earth is she lying about? Only thing that matters is who the masters were sold to. That’s the issue. She has no issue with who owns them now. It’s who bought them. If you think her fans think otherwise, you missed the party.
Ahhhhh...HER FATHER was part of the sale so she KNEW and played the poor me artist angle ( but also benefitted) to get more fans and support as if she was robbed. Nuff said.
Some of y'all need to understand stuff before commenting. She never said she was not trying to buy them. Her label was giving her the run a around and saying she had to make three more albums to get them. She was trying to leave that label so she walked away. She told her friend Karlie who told her husband Jared kushner brother who told scooter and scooter bought them. That's what happened. Her re recording her stuff was smart and you see other artist like Ashanti and the Jonas brothers saying they will rerecord as well
@@devanshepard9118 you trying to explain proves my point more. Thank you. You forgot to add PRINCE as rerecording some material as well if we're being accurate. But the fact remains she used her position as an innocent "indie" ARTIST which she was not to sway public opinion ( using actual struggling artist) against the ones who could afford to buy the masters INCLUDING her father. Her trying to break a contract before she full filled it by producing the required albums in exchange for "possible" ownership of masters she hadn't earned yet is another thing all together.
