Wow. I’ve avoided that area for a long time. I don’t even use 49th. I remember when they built those projects.
My friend’s family sold their house and lived in one of the larger homes in that subdivision, while they looked for a home in another city.
We spent a lot of time in that area, in another era.
Thanks for showing us what’s going on over there! Stay safe!

I moved away from Hobart in 1975. I joined the army at age 17 and never looked back. As I think back to pre 1975, I'm struck by the memory that there wasn't much of a sense of community. Too bad. Now I live in a mid sized city in Virginia. God bless and watch over those who remain in NW Indiana.

A major problem in Gary and the rest of Northwest Indiana was that people who came there to work in the steel mills and refineries came from all over the United States, from all over the world. The mix of cultures, nationalities, and even languages in the people in that area just didn't blend well. It's certainly understandable that there wasn't much of a sense of community in that region, the Calumet Region as it was called.

Gotta give credit where credit is due! Bill Clinton signed NAFTA and as a result the steel industry in this country got shut down. Without tariffs, steel slabs were being imported into our country cheaper than we could make them. So the industry went away and unemployment rose in those areas.

I think these are FHA 235 homes. Low cost housing for beginners to be able to purchase a house. Sorry to see them empty.

This is late, but it would be really nice to have a home like one of those to fix up. I've lived in a bad area most of my life, so that's no problem. Good camera work Stay safe, sir.

As of recently that entire area has been fenced off and tore down. I seen a few homes in that area could of be saved but I heard no one was given the opportunity to purchase one.

I haven't been in this area of Gary yet, however a lot of those houses seem as if they were abandoned very recently. I can imagine that land being put to use for something good.

Those houses were Housing Authority scatered sites. They closed slowly when the HA started closing all the housung projects.

They don't look so bad from the outside besides the tall grass..Why do they have two separate sets of numbers on the outside? Is that a 9/11 thing like what happened here on Pa where they gave us all new addresses??

Im confused, Don't these properties have mortgages? Why have so many houses been vacated in a neighborhood? What does City Hall have to say about all this? Why isn't there garbage pickup or at least something to take care of all the mess? Sad to see so much destruction when there are families needing housing! Somebody's head should be rolling.

That is truly Terrible. Those house / neighbor is not that old. I wonder if the lack of opportunity and safety caused the flight of the area . Or was is something else. Also I thing the numbers that start with AC _ _ are there to record that the house is empty and the meters and other amenities were pulled in the attempt to deter squatters from claiming the residents as there own. Seeing as that area is empty but some of the houses look decent Im sure Gary wouldn't notice Someone moving into one and tried to make a life in one of them without even noticing

I have to give you credit for being gutsy. There is no way to know what you will run up against in such an area. Anyone could be lurking in one of those houses. It is almost like one of those apocalypse movies and you are the last man standing.

Part of it is a lack of tax dollars, emergency services and infrastructure maintenance has to take precedence. Throw in some good ol corruption and it doesn't leave much for clean up. They be sweatin the resident's for volunteer labor 😅😂

Why have all these houses been abandoned? The city should condemn these houses and make the land available at no charge to construction firms to build on and sell, providing they knock down the houses that are on the land at their cost in exchange. Give the contractor 6 months to perform and you have tax money coming in. Who knows, maybe some white people would move in and the neighborhood would be back! About the guns in Gary: The city should require registration of all guns. If they catch someone without a registered gun, take the gun away and require either jail time or public service to clean up the city. Maybe then the city will get under control. Stay safe. The city needs you.

    • @stevepfeiffer2143
      @stevepfeiffer2143 5 лет назад +2

@Steve Smith Hi there...the city should deed the property over to the contractor, in exchange for knocking down the old building and replacing it with a new building. When enough land has been given away, reward the best contractor with more land to build, Some contractors may never leave Gary! You might even get a contractor that might want a section of land like the Federal Housing that was just recently torn down. Even the Federal Government would probably enjoy having someone "take over"!.

"Maybe whites people move in and the neighborhood will be back" ?????!!?????? Wow! I'm a little confused on how that would make things better! Gary need investors. Gary need a mayor that cares! This whole block could be renovated easily! Iv seen a few of this guy videos and it makes me want to educate myself about real estate and flip the fuck out of Gary and then it would be better!
With all that being said ...
That statement or thought or what ever you want to call it was ignorant!
      BTW I'm from Gary!
      Peace!
