- Nitro Ball AKA "Gun Ball" in Japan, is a classic arcade run 'n gun shooter developed by Data East and first released to arcades in 1992.
The game mixes elements of a run 'n gun shooter with a pinball theme. Each stage of the game represents a different pinball table theme complete with bumpers and spinners; including a football field, a ghost town with zombies, ghosts, and vampire boss, as well as a war against a massive military, an alien world, and a space station.
Picking up the B icons transforms your soldier into a pinball that can wipe out everything on the screen in
The game plays similarly to Williams classic top-down shooter Smash T.V., and many of the game's characters look and behave in a similar manner to the monsters in the original Gauntlet arcade games.
Players took on the role of an ex-navy sergeant named Gary, or player 2 as the ex-police officer named Harry.
The game boasts a decent set of weapons, including a flame thrower, rocket launcher, lasers, and powerful special attack that when unleashed engulfs the entire screen in a spinning swirl of pinballs that branch out in every direction.
Sadly, the game has no evade maneuver, often making it very difficult, if not impossible to evade the faster moving enemies attacks. Its also a relatively short game, taking less than 20 minutes to complete, and the controls are nowhere near as intuitive as those seen in Smash T.V.
On a positive note, the game had a phenomenal retro themed synthwave soundtrack, as was typical of classic Data East games. Heck, the game is worth playing just for the soundtrack alone.
Just as in Smash T.V., Nitro Ball too has a game show like theme, with an announcer welcoming you to each successive stage of the game. And just as with Smash T.V., defeated enemies drop tons of loot to increase your score.
