@@01DOGG01 Yeah, without being here, I really struggled. I spent about 45 minutes just after lunch talking to a random dude at a park and about 30 minutes with our neighbors just now. The only way to really learn to speak Thai is to learn to read as well because the transliteration is always close, but never right. And be in Thailand.....that's very helpful also.
@@chrisdavisunofficial I'm very ashamed to say that I've been in Thailand for almost 3 years now, on top of coming here many times before that, yet can't even compete with this guy that studied it for a couple of weeks. It doesn't help that the wife is Thai and we obviously communicate in English. The local corner shops speak very good English, the neighbour as well, all having spent time abroad, so every time that I actually need something in Thai I ask the wife. Horse, dog, come... Ma, ma, ma lol it's hard for me. And there are so many things much harder than that. And I haven't even started on the script... Yikes!
@@01DOGG01 Haha, yeah, you should be fluent by now. The few things I can kinda say really help people to open up. We'll both get there one day. My wife can't hear the tones, so that has made it really fun.
I love that he includes those moments, it makes it very real. He is a very humble guy and it shows in the way he interacts with others when learning a new language.
I am a casino dealer. In the course of any day, I run into probably about 4 or 5 different language opportunities with regulars. I LOVE hearing an accent and finding out what languages they speak. Then I make an effort to greet them next time with at least a "hello", "long time, no see", "thank you" and "bye" in their language. Today I just did it in Thai and the smile and reactions are worth the minimal effort. I do know conversational levels in a few languages but there is nothing wrong with at least learning a few "opening lines" in many different ones. (BTW, hello in Thai sounds like "sah-wah-dee"). People appreciate it so much and they honestly seek me out when they come in again (and yes, they do tend to tip better because of it but honestly that is just icing on the cake as I really enjoy the interaction more).
I'm a white guy fluent in Thai and haven't gotten reactions like this from Thai people in suchhh a long time. It's funny how when you're a beginner making an effort, people find it really charming and give you so many compliments. But when you speak fluently, people just assume you've been living there a long time and don't care much. Xiaoma can just say aroi mak mak all day long and their eyes light up like wow you speak so well!! 555555 I love watching though, please make more effort with Thai
I find it depends on where you go. In Bangkok I barely get any reactions, although every now and then I get asked if I'm a ลูกครึ่ง (luuk-krung, half-child) even though I don't look Thai at all 555 But if I go somewhere where there's lots of farangs like Koh Samui/Phuket/etc people still get pretty surprised. Also people assume I'm an English teacher quite often too
Idk how after all this time of following him, I just read his description. I just found out that he started learning at age 18 which is so crazy inspiring. I’ve always wanted to be like him with languages but I was sure he started super early. I didn’t think starting at 18 would be much of an advantage for me and it still might not be the greatest, but he’s proof that it can be done.
Same! I’ve only known English my entire, but I’ve started learning Japanese a few weeks ago and it’s shocking how rewarding it feels to learn. I thought I was a bit late, getting into a new language at 18 but, alongside just how fun its been so far, this definitely makes me hopeful.
depending on if you have experience with any language, start there. for me it is spanish. and i have a good base in that. from there i am able to learn italian french romanian and portuguese pretty easily vs other languages
Every time I see faces of people in shock after youtubers speak language it brings smile , Learn different language and culture is so satisfying I think and interesting , going watch both Thai vids again Thanks for making me smile
It's incredibly normal for friendly people to laugh at some weird pronunciation... also they corrected him, that's how you improve your language, learning while having a laugh. I'm from Brazil and our pronunciation is very difficult for english speakers at first, I can't count how many times I've made fun of friends but also correcting them afterwards, that's just how it goes.
As a non-Thai person who speaks Thai, definitely lol. Seems like he can speak it well but the tones and pronunciation need work for sure. Good enough for a tourist for sure though. I know Thai is hard, I grew up here so my accent's dang good.
No, his thai does not sound like the chinese influenced chiang mai style of speaking. His thai sounds like somebody who hasnt listened to enough thai yet. He needs to watch 50 thai movies.
I don't think so sadly. I'm not trying to confront you or anything, but most Thais dramatically underestimate the difficulty of learning Thai as a foreigner.
Those places you went to were awesome. Experiencing real culture with down to earth and friendly people.Makes me want to learn Thai and Chinese and go to Bangkok myself. Great video as usual!
There was nothing close to fluency here. He spoke Chinese 90% of the time and only said around 10 phrases in Thai. You could learn this level in 2-3 hours of study.
thats one of the problems when learning thai, all kinds of different dialects are spoken, Lao , Khmer or a mixture, difficult to know whats what at first.
I speak pretty broken tourist thai, it is really nice getting a response when I ask for things in thai, normally food. Sitting with the locals and trying a bit means they correct you on how "they" speak rather than the formal way the likes of pimsleur teach you. For example I was told not to say Mai Chi khrap (no) when somebody offered me something, the lady sitting with me said " Say Mai Ao its politer" - best way to improve sit down and try.
Mai chai actually means that something is incorrect, like if someone asks you "Are you Thai?" then you can answer with Mai chai, meaning that no, I'm not Thai. Mai ao means no take, meaning that you won't take/accept something (ao means to take/get/accept, and can be used as a slang for f*ck as well)
I started studying chinese earlier this year as my girlfriend is chinese, and I'm glad to say that I can understand more and more, it makes me so happy 😁

If I couldn't live in Mexico for some reason I'd love to live in Thailand. saludos
I spent some time in Malaysia and learned an interesting fact. I was told that the closer you get to the equator the hotter the food. The reason was explained to me that in hot humid climates food tends to spoil quickly and hot spices help make the food more edible.

Ah man, I love, this channel - the lost art of communication and meeting new people. A beautiful thing. You always feel better after watching one of your videos.
Thai is a hard language to learn. It’s tonal. Your attempt to say “corn and coconut” is an example. If you get the tone wrong, the word has an entirely different meaning. My wife is Thai, we’ve been together 10 years, married for 8, I’m around her family and friends often, been to Thailand a couple times, and still your Thai is better than mine.
Yup, my mother's side is Chinese via Thailand (she was born in Bangkok's Chinatown so this was especially cool for me to watch) and she liked to emphasize the over-simplicity of English by saying Thai has "44 letters - and 22 vowels!"
same scenario.. 10 years with my wife who's born Canadian origins from Laos and even Laotian and Thai is slightly different, the number of time i try to say something and deff not the right tone
I've always thought that Thai was one of the most beautiful languages in the world. Any time I've heard it spoken in a movie I thought it was absolutely musical. I would love to learn it, but I don't think I'd have any occasion to use it as I don't even know anyone from Thailand.

That’s amazing that you can speak multiple languages! I’m Thai and lives in Oregon, haven’t been back to Thailand for few years now I miss it so much😭.
I noticed that the way you speak Thai (flow, pitch, intonation, etc.) is similar to the way you speak Chinese. I recommend to everyone that when you’re learning a new language to not take reference from the languages that you’re already familiar with. Think of it as a totally new idea and concept that shouldn’t always be connected to your mother tongue(s) Been following you for years and I’m very impressed at how you communicate to and surprise Chinese speaking people with your Chinese skills though. But as a bilingual Thai/English speaker who’s taught English for many years, I suggest that if you want to improve your Thai, make sure that you 1) practice the tones and 2) listening to the flow of speech of native Thai speakers. Another thing to mention is that the majority of Thai-Chinese that is 3rd to 4th generation have already lost their ability to speak Chinese/usually Tajeaw or Hakka origin so most of the time they’re not familiar at all with mandarin unless they have to deal with mainland/Taiwan for business or something. Love and respect you Xiaoma and I love to see you improve on your Thai!
*_"I recommend to everyone that when you’re learning a new language to not take reference from the languages that you’re already familiar with."_* 100% - you have to replicate the sound, not try and make it like a word in your native tongue.

Having been attempting to learn Thai for a while, it is very clear that Ari has a gift that most others don't.
you need to study the basics, and then talk everyday, worked for me, regular visitor to LOS for 25 + years
Pom pud Thai dai nit noi.
It's so fkn hard with the tones it destroys me! I don't know how people can learn so fast and especially have people understand what they're saying.
Man how awesome of Xiaoma showing us him getting humbled. Its a process everybody stasy true to it and you can learn another language!
The way to learn anything is to try it, get it wrong, and eventually get it right.
I love that he includes those moments, it makes it very real. He is a very humble guy and it shows in the way he interacts with others when learning a new language.
not only is this guy spreading awareness of culture, but also is he spreading the wealth with these small businesses. God bless
I am Thai and this is so funny how easily Thai people are amused 😂😂 Your Thai is decent and you pronounce stuff funny.
Haha also he's just a funny awkward dude
I can only have one wife.... One wife hahaha
I'd love to have the opportunity to have these experiences though!
Also people assume I'm an English teacher quite often too
Do you have a thai meow?

@@baconoverflow4384 Just say you're full Thai - that's what I do. Because I'm clearly a white man they always laugh.
Every time I see faces of people in shock after youtubers speak language it brings smile ,
Learn different language and culture is so satisfying I think and interesting , going watch both Thai vids again
Thanks for making me smile
Lol, they were laughing at your pronouncation but you are the language god. Give this man another week and he'd be fluent lol.
I thought that was great, they were correcting his pronunciation. Soo funny, yet they were trying help.
I think they laugh cuz they like it, not many foreigner can speak Thai and they alway said he good at Thai
I’m thai,They laughed because they were impressed, that’s how old people do.
Holy shit I haven't laughed so hard in a while. I miss Thailand so much, the people, the food, the humour is on another level
As a Thai, I would say that if you're already fluent in Chinese, you'd master the tonal concept of Thai in no time.
Do you think he was asked if he was from China twice in the beginning because he’s so fluent in Chinese that his Thai has a chance accent ?
No, his thai does not sound like the chinese influenced chiang mai style of speaking.
His thai sounds like somebody who hasnt listened to enough thai yet.
He needs to watch 50 thai movies.
I don't think so sadly. I'm not trying to confront you or anything, but most Thais dramatically underestimate the difficulty of learning Thai as a foreigner.
Those places you went to were awesome. Experiencing real culture with down to earth and friendly people.Makes me want to learn Thai and Chinese and go to Bangkok myself. Great video as usual!
So impressive… I’ve been to Thailand so many times but I’m not even remotely close to this level of fluency.
Speaks very well of the Thai people in how accommodating they are to English speakers.
My vocabulary doesn't get beyond sawadee and kapunka(p)
There was nothing close to fluency here. He spoke Chinese 90% of the time and only said around 10 phrases in Thai. You could learn this level in 2-3 hours of study.
Do u even lift bro
@@kabouterwesley83same here. I understand when people add “ka” at the end, but that’s all.
Thai people really like people who at least try to speak their language. Definitely heard some Isaan/Lao in your conversations.
Lao loanwords are a part of the BKK Thai lexicon now as I'm sure you know. Amazing how quickly the evolution is at street level!
thats one of the problems when learning thai, all kinds of different dialects are spoken, Lao , Khmer or a mixture, difficult to know whats what at first.
It's Thai - Esarn language because my wife are Thai - Esarn
@@foodhistory1387 Many Laos and Thai - Esan peoples come to work in Bangkok. As a Bangkokian like me. I don't understand some words that they talk.
@@mhappy5084 but in the last 20 years more and more Lao words are used everyday by Central Thai people in BKK; the language is changing very quickly.
Mai ao means no take, meaning that you won't take/accept something (ao means to take/get/accept, and can be used as a slang for f*ck as well)
He's at it again!
Surprising and entertaining people all over the world
I started studying chinese earlier this year as my girlfriend is chinese, and I'm glad to say that I can understand more and more, it makes me so happy 😁
Love watching your videos, not obnoxious style of vlogging and in people faces. Showing respect for them and culture with education. Then peacefully and kindly showing your gratitude.
Wheni travel i try to be like this, I am going to Indonesia again soon, learned the language pretty well for my 2nd visit coming.
Watching your videos after studying Mandarin for 4 months is so much fun because I'm actually starting to pickup on some of what you say. Hopefully I can speak this well once I get into my 20's

I spent two months in Thailand in 2017 and had an amazing time. I studied a little bit of Thai, enough to help me find my way when I got lost. feels good to learn a tonal language, being so different from English phonetically
People were so wonderful there, the food amazing.
Yay!! I'm so excited you finally learned thai!! I was an exchange student in nonthaburi,, and I'm applying to college there too!! Thai is such a fun language and the people are the most wonderful. Prathed thai pom kidthung kun mak mak mak

That guy telling him to stop eating durian in front of his shop and to go away also forcefully told Xiaoma what to film and that he better post it online... and Xiaoma actually did it! Way too nice of a guy =p

Many shops have large fine for durian. Same same taxi and hotels. Not allowed because of smell.
“ consumed before passengers enter the Singapore Metro system, unless they want to pay a $500 SGD ($380 USD) fine. A similar ban exists across Bangkok public transportation.”

He's not really Thai. Because real Thai people will not do that. Indicates that he is from China rather than Thai. i am real thai. Real Thai people don't do that. would be considerate and respectful and friendly than chasing guests like that.
I think that is normal for China, they want people to advertise their shop, not product from someone elses shop in front of theirs. It's a cultural thing

I love spicy food, but that lady is kinda right: Hispanic, cajun, chinese, and Indian can all get really spicy, but Thai food, a Thai medium is extra spicy everywhere else it seems

@@awibs57 Yep, and there’s lots of vowel sounds that we don’t have in the English language that English speakers don’t hear unless you point them out

Wow.. I'm big fan of your channel and always want you to visit Thailand..finally you here. Hope you have great time here.🙏☺️☺️
I noticed that the way you speak Thai (flow, pitch, intonation, etc.) is similar to the way you speak Chinese.
