I'm not sure if I'm alone with this opinion but to me Pride and Prejudice is a book that reminds me of summer, not like a "hot summer day" vibe but more like a warm summer morning when the sun is just coming out and you can tell it's gonna be a hot and humid day, and you can smell the breath of the earth after it rained last night and you inhale the scent of the lightly burnt grass bathing in the morning sun, ugh! I guess I imagine it off of the scene where Darcy is walking towards Elizabeth and we can see the morning sun shining through the grass, and it probably isn't even that hot in England but my brain has it engraved like that 🌾

As I've grown fond of writing on BookTube, my first time with Jane was a two week vacation from a job counting money all night long in a windowless little room with four strangers who liked music I would never listen to when it was my turn to control the radio. The Book-of-the-Month club boxed set arrived right on time, and IIRC it was during the Martini period of my life. I don't remember much of the other ones, but P&P has been a favorite of mine ever since.

Tove Jansson is one of my favourite authors 🥰 I find her adult fiction feels so real because it is very unsentimental. The candidness with which she writes about everyday life is what makes her writing stand apart. For those who’ve already ready The Summer Book (I would recommend starting there), I’d recommend picking up her novel “Fair Play” which is my favourite romantic story. IRL Tove and her partner lived on two ends of an attic apartment with a connecting corridor in the center, and the two women artists in this story do as well, which is why it’s clear to modern audiences they are intended to be read as a lesbian couple. I really haven’t read many books about elderly couples, especially lgbt ones, just such a unique book. Certainly not a warm and fuzzy romantic story, but I found their deep bond and commitment beautiful.

Ahhhhhh, hearing that you also love Your Name has just totally made my day! That's one of my favorite movies of all time! I cry multiple times whenever I rewatch it. The manga has been sitting on my shelf for some time now and you just gave me the motivation to finally read it once I'm back home 🥰
Also, please watch/read the other works of Shinkai. He really is a masterful storyteller, especially of romances.

Since you mentioned ‘your name’, ‘a silent voice’ is another film/manga I absolutely recommend if you haven’t heard of it before. It’s about a boy who used to bully a deaf girl when he was younger, but deeply regrets it after growing up a bit and does his best to find her again and make amends. It’s a very heartbreaking but also heartwarming story and it’s a really wonderful experience that punched me in the heart and I’ll always hold onto.

With E. M. Forster I highly recommend A Passage to India, it has some beautifully written passages and it really makes you think about culture, class and colonialism, and it's set in India so it's hot and humid and in my view quite summery. I've read almost all of his books, and this is by far my favorite!

I also have The Summer Book and Madeline Miller’s books on my personal summer reading list! I also have books that are set in the summer but perhaps not stereotypically summery, like 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth and The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers. I recently finished The Iliad and will be re-reading The Odyssey: the characters are on the shore or at sea, where I’d like to be (albeit in different circumstances).

Read the Go-Between by L.P. Hartley. It is the most perfect summer book. It is short, elegiac, filled with the oppressive heat of late summer. There is a wonderful audiobook narrated by Sean Barrett (only ten hours long). It begins with the famous line 'The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there'. I have never forgotten this book and always associate it with high summer.

If you're looking for another audiobook recommendation, I think you would like "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", about a London author who finds solace and solitude among a book-loving community on the Isle of Guernsey as Britain recovers from World War 2. Since it's an epistolary novel, every letter-writer in the production I heard has their own reader. It made the contrast in accents between the English main character, her Channel Island friends, and her American suitor SUPER enjoyable to experience. There was a movie of it, which was alright, but the audiobook was SO MUCH better!

Hey Emma! Thanks for all the recommendations. You should definitely give "5 centimeters per second" a try if you enjoyed "Your name". It is made by the same studio. I love the manga too. Also, Circe was my favorite read this year, great book!

My summer books that have literally nothing in common with each other are The People in the Trees, Heaven Official's Blessing, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Convenience Store Woman (or Earthlings), and I plan to read The Blind Earthworm in the Labyrinth, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Circe and One Hundred Years of Solitude too, hope you find something that you like :)

I think Maurice is widely considered Forster’s “worst novel” which isn’t surprising because he never planned to publish it. I love it because it perfectly captures a certain queer experience that I related to, and I love the boldness of the happy ending. I think a room with a view is probably much better written and edited since it went through a publisher in his lifetime!
My summer read recommendation is Kiki’s Delivery Service, it’s sooo lovely to read, it’s got that hot summer plant magic feeling

Even if Maurice isn't his most polished novel, it's certainly an incredibly important one. It allowed for instance for a happy ending, as you mentioned, which was considered just outrageous even in the 70s (surely a homosexual romance could only end in a break up or murder-suicide!).
