- True Crime is a part of everyday media that the TV series, specials, films, and documentaries all about it have been around forever. But actually, that's not the case. The format we now see, wasn’t the norm at all in the 80s. A weekly series built around cases and interviews with the people who were a part of them, re-enacting the crimes…had never been done before.
But then one day a series came along that would not only showcase True Crime but would also give us ghosts, UFOs, and all points in between. Not only that, but the theme song would cause PTSD in most kids my age who had the fortune or misfortune to hear it. That series is Unsolved Mysteries, a series so popular that it changed not only pop culture but the way investigations within law enforcement were conducted.
Today on Gone But Not Forgotten, we’re delving into the question of what happened to Unsolved Mysteries.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex deserves the recognition it never really got as one of the best anime series of all time.
Anyone watch the classic 'Kentucky Fried Chicken' Movie? They had a coupla sections called "Bullshit... Or not?" Where the presenter (in a similar format to these kind of shows) would describe various Crime/Mystery scenarios, like was Londons' Jack the Ripper actually the Loch Ness monster ('Nessy'), and other scenarios, and asking the truly great question... "Was it just bullshit? Or not?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
😎🇬🇧
@thedarkknight1971 It's just The Kentucky Fried Movie, and yes, I have it on DVD.
@@anthonymerchant2597 Hahaha blame this 52 year 'Old fart' memory. But yeah, I took have it on DVD. Such an ace film! Amazon Women on the Moon, and adverts that will 'Make you Cream Your Jeans"! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ahhh they don't make them like they used to! 👍
@@thedarkknight1971 No worries, and I'm 43 with PTSD and TBI issues. I know all about memory problems. I have had an idea for years about making a movie similar to that using all the movie trailer clichés of the past couple of decades.
That opening creeped the hell out of me when I was a kid.
Same here.
Yeah join the club.
Made my nipples hard with fear when I was 8 and again now at 42.
OG nightmare fuel
💩 right outta me.
Nothing like Robert Stack’s voice saying “UPDATE”
That was my favorite part.
It was a jump scare
Word.
Would get excited and hopeful hearing “Update”! My young brain loved justice.
I loved updates of stories
"Join me. Perhaps YOU may be able to help solve a mystery."
"Perhaps that someone is watching. Perhaps...it's YOU"
Don’t say that!!
😂❤
Robert stack had the perfect voice and tone for unsolved mysteries
❤
How many 40 - 50 year olds in the comments!!!
I’ll be 39 this year and that’s all we watched Wednesday nights😂
Born in 80' .... 44 years old
40. Remember being 14 and watching late at night on lifetime. Music was super creepy
39 till September. This was all we watched. Well saved by the bell and a few other ones but my mother was hooked to this..
1985 💖💅
Robert Stack and John Walsh are technically the granddaddy of True Crimes Series of the 80s and i do agree that the UM Theme was bone chilling until the mid 90s
Robert Stack was a screen actor prior to becoming the host of 'Unsolved Mysteries.' John Walsh had a regular 9 - 5 job before 'American Most Wanted.' He got involved because he was a victim of crime himself (his little boy being murdered).
@@splashenfulhis son Adam was my age in the 80s. I remember when it happened...every kid in school were on alert!
@@user-dk3up2nl1m Yes, whenever a kid goes missing in a certain area, it makes *ALL* the kids go on alert too (& rightly so). I myself, remember the horrible stories of children close to my own age disappearing, & how upsetting it all was.
@@splashenfulor was it a blood sacrifice to further his career?
@@splashenfulI've often wondered how John Walsh feels about that,
Had it not been for the tragic murder of his son- John Walsh would not only be anonymous but he wouldn't be worth many millions of dollars as he is as a direct result of his son being kidnapped and murdered.
I still love watching reruns of Unsolved Mysteries… also, Robert Stack WAS Unsolved Mysteries.
There’s a whole channel on Roku that plays the episodes.
And I think Tubi has them as well ❤
New season coming out on Netflix this year.
@@sethwiley7839However there is no more Robert Stack,
he is gone.
The intro and Robert Stack's narration were awesome. The cases were great.
I'm bingeing the new series on Netflix now and I was thinking it definitely didn't feel the same. Not hearing Robert Stack's voice every few minutes gave it a different feel. It's not much different from the dozens of true crime shows out there now. Still an okay series tho imo.
I wonder why the intro scared people
One of the best parodies was on Beavis & Butthead do America. While the Robert Stack lookalike was named Agent Hurley, it was voiced by Stack himself, also he rocked a pretty cool trench coat.
It was a family event every time Unsolved Mysteries and Rescue 911 came on TV LOL
These shows got me into the crime genre.
I forgot about Rescue 911 😮❤
William Schatners voice kept me hooked.
Rescue 911 i still remember the episode where the little kid gt his tongue stuck in a yoohoo bottle good times😂
@@keysersoze4334 Baby Jessica in the well and the person who lost their arm to an alligator are my favorite that I can remember 😄
I'm 31 and I can still remember laying in bed hearing this theme music on Sunday night. What a way to fall asleep😅😅
This show never gets old.
I liked it.
The ghost and aliens and other supernatural mumbojumbo episodes were pretty lame. I liked the true crime stuff.
You’re right about that! I still watch it till this day. I only wish that the new unsolved mysteries on Netflix was as good as this one. Hopefully they’ll take some cues from this older version to make improvements on the current show. Lol.
Robert Stack voice is Imprinted in my brain for the rest of my life and so is James Earl Jones...
I love falling asleep to this show. It’s eery but such a great background when I’m snoozing
Same
You might have some dreams that might jolt you awake
Me too lol. Forensic files is good too. Especially the earlier episodes. Lol why are we like this 😂
Ok,so it wasn’t just me who loved this show but was also scared of it?
Not at all.
Yes!! 😅
Me
Not even close
It was terrifying! But u couldnt stop watching it
When I was a kid, my sister and I flipped a coin on which TV show to watch: "Rescue 911" or "Unsolved Mysteries", because we only had 1 TV and both were on in the same time slot. I don't remember who won, but these shows were such fond memories in my childhood. ❤
Ah man, rescue 911!! Another great show!! Man I miss my childhood and getting old sucks!!
I miss Rescue 911! As an aussie it was gold
Oh I remember Rescue 911 😂😅
Sounds like fun times ❤
Loved them both!! 😊
Intro music and Robert Stack’s voice still get me looking over my shoulder.
My ring tone is the "Unsolved Mysteries" theme. It's eerie to hear, if I leave my phone in a different room, especially at night.
Me too!!!! I love all the episodes streaming
ooooh good idea! I wana do that.
That is because you are a DORK.
That’s cool asf 😂💯
how did you do that? I want mine to be that too
Unsolved Mysteries is not just a true crime show. They also talked about ghosts, UFOs, the afterlife, people taking to the dead, animals saving people's life and other unexplained things
The theme scared the hell out of me. It also scares my kids.
Also there is a wiki that tells you if the case was solved.
Good to know, thanks.
I remember one specific segment that scared me as a kid. A woman is involved in a wreck in the middle of the night with another car, then gets out and just stares blankly at the other person before walking off into a field and staring from a distance before walking into the woods. I remember it vividly, and it still gives me chills just thinking about.
Patricia Meehan. The case is still unsolved.
@@governorblack Thank you! I ended up finding the episode on here. Still holds up and gives me the creeps.
did she vanish?
@@gebert87 she walked away into the night and disappeared. Neither she nor her body have been found.
I miss this show so much. It scared me back in the 80s lol especially the music
I’ve heard others say that. Spooky music 👻
It’s on RUclips! I watch it all the time.
Robert Stack hosted Unsolved Mysteries through 2002. The show ended in 2002 after Robert Stack became ill. He died in 2003 from heart failure
😢 rip legend
I was a kid in 87'. That theme music scared the crap of me.
I'm still waiting for a new set of episodes on Netflix...been a while...
I only wished that the new unsolved mysteries took cues from the older versions to improve upon it. Like using the original intro and music and at the very least taking public votes on which ones they think are the best and to still continue with the re-enactments. Hopefully it’ll happen because I would definitely watch it because the new version sucks in my opinion. They should also include new episodes as well. Personally, I think if they did, it could go on for another 10 years but that’s just my opinion. Lol.
I love you Robert Stack and Unsolved Mysteries!! Thanks, JoBlo!!
It plays on Pluto
And Amazon Prime ❤
This was one of My favorite TV shows!
I used to watch this on NBC every Friday night with my parents
"Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes."
"Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking"
There’s a sale at Penny’s!!! And Lennie’s getting LARGER!
“The first thing we wanna do is build this man up. Give him all the confidence in the world. Stryker have you ever flown a multi engine plane before?”
“No. Never.”
“Shit! This is god damn waste of time. There’s no way he can land that plane…”
My favorites back in the day were American Justice and Cold Cise files with Bill Kurtis narrating. Also City confidential with that guy with a creepy voice. And of course forensic files was great. I haven't found any current ones I like as much as these old school ones. Me and my mom used to watch them together when I was younger. Good times.
Same, unsolved mysteries, forensic files, and America's most wanted were our late evening staples, I still rewatch them when I can find em. They need to drop box sets of them so I can add them to the collection
There’s some more recent series I watch like Fear Thy Neighbor. Reminds me how glad in am my neighbors are normal and sane😂..Also “I Survived” is quite intense
@@_MissDee_ oh yes, I started watching I Survived years ago. Excellent show. Fantastic accounts of the actual victims. Agree on Fear thy neighbor as well. I watched every one of those as too LOL. There was also a show on Netflix way back that had a short season about roommates. I can't remember the name and think it was like five episodes or something. It was on Netflix for a while but I'm not sure if it is anymore. Basically roommates end up at each other's throats, usually ends in murder. A couple of interesting situations where people move in and just stop paying rent and will not leave etc. It was really good. And I am hoping they will do a second season.
I LOVE Bill Kurtis. He’s a surprisingly awesome guy with a wicked sense of humor. Supposedly, the same is the case with Robert Stack. Old timers man, when they are cool they are COOL.
This was my favorite show in the 80s. To this day, the theme song creeps me out to no end!
Nothing better then the original unsolved mysteries
You’re right about that!
14:39 I've never seen this before! Thank you so much for including it. It's awesome to see him laughing and smiling in his trenchcoat ♥
I was born in 1981, unsolved mysteries and rescue 911 were my favorite shows growing up
I grew up watching this show. My grandparents would play it occasionally. Even though they watched other shows more, this one stuck with me because of the theme song. I've rewatched it hundreds of times since. It's truly one of my favorite shows. Robert Stack is fantastic. The new one is a lot more slow-paced but it's still good.
Unsolved Mystery’s was unmatched. The re-enactments & storytelling were top level.
The ghost episodes were all ways my favorite.👻👹
Did they solve the "ghost" mysteries. I remember there was one where an alien kept visiting a woman in her bedroom.
Such a great show
I loved this show as a kid (and adult). It really gave you a sense of how large and strange the world was outside of your own small sphere of existence.
Unsolved Mysteries had ended in May of 2003 on a Thursday when Robert Stack had passed away the previous night (Wednesday night), a week and a half before I graduated from high school.
I was also A senior that year. I remember seeing an eposide that year and thibk wait that show still come on. I used to watch it as a kid.
An awesome retrospective on my birthday. Thanks.
Happy Birthday!
Happy Belated Birthday 🎉
I’m from the Blackfeet Reservation who have produced the recent actress Lily Gladstone (who won a golden globe and SAG award and was nominated for an Oscar for her acting) anyway another famous Blackfeet actor named Steve Reevis appeared on unsolved mysteries as well as Walker Texas Ranger. I remember watching UM as a kid religiously and loved that creepy song in the beginning, seeing our local people on the show is what inspired me to get into the industry. Today I am a SAG member and I do stunt work for the only native owned stunt company in the business “Wagon Burners” the founder of which is also a Blackfeet from my community.
I used to watch this show as a kid growing up and I loved it
RIP Robert "Ultra Magnus" Stack. Forever in our Hearts ❤❤
This video was edited & produced as a perfect homage to Robert and the series very respectful and professionally written. I have always enjoyed JoBlo Originals, but you hit really knocked it out of the park with this episode. I never comment on RUclips and doubt I will again so here is my shout out.
Was the only show I watched willingly with my parents as a teen. Loved it! And was thrilled to see Netflix brought it back.
Loved this show growing up in the 90s it was played here on New Zealand 🇳🇿 tv
It's one of my all-time favorite TV shows 😮 📺 👍
Something I didn’t know that I needed
The Halloween episodes were especially creepy featuring ghost and haunting stories
Robert Stack is a part of my childhood.
Production was top notch. Re-enactments were real good.
This was a solid synopsis of Unsolved Mystere's run. I'm sure I'm in the minority when I say this, but I find the theme song and Robert Stack's voice comforting, as it reminds me of my childhood, sitting around the TV and watching Unsolved Mysteries every Friday night. My father passed away when I was eight years old, and Robert Stack hosted episodes of Unsolved reminds me of my dad as well.
Those were the good old days ❤
Unsolved Mysteries is very iconic
It's incredibly it went through multiple iterations
I used to watch it when I was a kid and would keep it on the TV to help me go to bed
"Unsolved Mysteries" was my favorite show when I was a kid. It jump started my love of True Crime and Paranormal things... RIEP Robert Stack...
That music just hits differently. 30 years on it brings me right back to childhood
The show was never the same once Stack was gone and the music changed
I would literally change the channel when the theme song played and then turn it back.
Love that theme song. When it gets to the bridge, i always get goosebumps.
I still watch this on PlutoTV as I work. Some episodes still scare the crap out of me lol. This show was iconic back in my youth. This is why I love anything true crime now!
Grew up watching this in the 80s. Scared the hell out of me but I loved Wednesday nights with Robert Stack, GOAT narrator of true crime shows
U.M was a staple of my childhood. I still watch it.
I'm 41 and when I hear that theme song it scares me so bad it would wake me from the dead! 😂 Does anybody remember when they would break in with the creepier 'Update!' music? 🤣
I watched the Beavis and Butthead movie not too long ago. I had PTSD of Unsolved Mysteries when I heard Robert Stack as one of the voice actors in that movie, no mistaking that voice. I watched a lot of that show when I was a kid. Now I'm getting X Files flashbacks thinking of UM
Same dude I just got into bnb and went back and watched everything and when I heard Robert Stack mandating full cavity searches on everyone I was floored
You are right about that song giving us PTSD. I've watch it on Netflix but I have to fast forward that intro
One of my all time favorite shows. I used to watch with my grandmother when I was a kid. Definitely brings back memories 😁
My family watched this show religiously at the time. Perfection.
Still at 40 yrs old the theme song invokes fear.
That intro and the reenactments of the early seasons were the scariest stuff I’ve seen on tv/movies. The long pauses on still photos of the victims or suspect, The camera shooting behind a tree as a kid is walking to schools on a kidnapping episode, A car’s headlights driving down a deserted highway in the middle of the night on a murder episode, and Robert Stack’s awesome voice and presence.
Show scared the hell out of me as a little kid in the late 80's when it came on as the sun set. Good times!
As a small kid in the 90s this show scared the hell out of me. Just the intro song alone gave me chills. I had to wrap in a blanket with my back against the wall to even watch a second of it lol
Unsolved Mysteries theme and the X-Files theme...both creepy AF and have a lot of good memories attached to them!
Every time I hear that song it brings me right back to feeling creeped out as a kid,R.I.P. Robert Stack, one of the best!
Was always creeped out by the intro as a kid growing up but loved every bit of watching it.
Stack with the opening still creeps me out! I love it!
I will binge watch this for days😅
I used to watch this show with my grandmother also murder she wrote and Matlock miss those days
This along with 48 Hours is the best!
That theme still sends a chill down my spine.
One of my all time favorite shows .... still love watching it ❤
People tend to forget the predecessor to this show called “In Search Of…” that was hosted by Leonard Nimoy during the 70s to early 80s. They have the old episodes here on RUclips. But there was something about Robert Stack & and Unsolved Mysteries that truly stood out for Gen-X.
The pictures "this is what they might look like today" used to creep me out. Had to stop watching it before bed.
I used to love that show ! There was a show called sightings. And it focused more on unexplained phenomenon, paranormal stuff and UFO and alien stories. I was always intrigued by mysteries, unexplained. and paranormal stuff.
I remember Sightings. There was also Rescue 911, and of course, America's Most Wanted.
Love this show! When I was a kid they filmed 2 episodes in my hometown. The Wallace Thrasher plan crash and the Danny Gordon UFO sightings
One of my all time favorite shows ❤ I wish they would do more episodes with the current series !!
There was no greater terror that a child could experience like hearing the musical intro of unsolved mysteries.
This show was the birth of my interest in true crime when I was a kid
When I was younger, I fell asleep with unsolved mysteries playing in the background. It creeped into my dream. Or shall I say... nightmare.
1:57 that old man rolling under the rv. The Blind River rest stop killer absolutely fuckin terrified me for years after i saw it as a kid
I love that show as an adult today. When I was a kid, it scared the crap out of me when the music started. I wish they’d make the TV show a weekly series again .. They did have unsolved mysteries as a podcast and I loved it and they just canceled it.
It's sad that a lot of those cases are still unsolved too. Some cases really bothered me when there was no traces, or evidence left. I started watching it again on Tubi a couple years ago, but haven't finished it.
I watched this with my mom in the 90's/early 2000's. Robert Stack was perfect on this show. The opening and closing themes have not been topped.
I remember watching reruns of this and forensic files in early 2010
did you watch it with dennis farina or robert stack hosting in early 2010?
That theme song used to creep me out. It wasn’t easy, but I got over it. The first time was the hardest. My parents were out late and it was a stormy night. They were doing a mini Unsolved Mysteries marathon. (On the Lifetime network) I was two episodes in, the theme song started and “WAM!!!” Apparently a tree branch broke off from a nearby tree and slammed into the side of the house. And like Shaggy and Scooby, I jumped sooo high and my legs were in pump mode before my feet could touch the ground. I didn’t know were I was running too, I just knew I had to get out of there.
A few years later I found a cd with T.V. theme songs and Unsolved Mysteries was one of the tracks. I just listened to it, til I got over it.
Sometime after 2008, i remember seeing unsolved mysteries on lifetime tv in usa.
I forget if it was reruns or they made some new episodes.
We used to watch unsolved mysteries, AMW, forensic files and other shows in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
We loved watching Robert Stack.
I worked on 2 epsodes of this show.
It was always a lot fun!
Whatever happened to Unsolved Mysteries has been an unsolved mystery to me.
The Aliens and Theme sound gave nightmares as a kid. I love the show now and the Netflix reboot
Good info
I’m 44… this show was the cause of MANY of my childhood nightmares… the THEME Music killed me every time I heard it!! I feel like they didn’t play it here maybe for copyright reasons? And even as an adult, I can say I’m glad I didn’t have to hear it because it would’ve given me PTSD.
Edit: oh shit they just played it! Well🥺, I guess I’m not sleeping tonight. 😅
