A Maiko (May-ko) is a trainee Geisha from Kyoto.
This was an April fools joke. On April 1st 2018 the Band-Maid website and You Tube channel was taken down and replaced by Band-Maiko. All music was removed and replaced with this MV. They stated this was their new direction!
They also don't sing in normal Japanese dialect, they sing in Kyoto dialect. Check out the original "Secret My Lips" for the difference.
    They also changed their names:
    Saiki became Fujiki
    Miku became Hatoko
    Kanami became Kanoemi
    MISA became Umemisa
    Akane became Akatsuki
In 2019 they did it again on April 1st releasing the MV to "Gion-Cho" - the only Band-Maiko original. (Gion is the Maiko district of Kyoto). They also released a seven track EP of Band-Maid covers with added traditional instruments plus "Gion-Cho". The tracks are:
"Secret Maiko Lips" (Band-Maids "Secret My Lips")
    "Akasimahen" (Band-Maids "Awkward")
    "Ansan" (Band-Maids "Anemone")
"Tora and Tora" (Band-Maids "One and Only")
    "Yolosiosu" (Band-Maids "YOLO")
    "Screaming" (Band-Maids "Screaming")
    "Gion-Cho"
The only band I know that formed a cover band of themselves.

Maiko kimonos are made with the highest class of Nishijin brocade, a traditional craft in Kyoto. Usually it's in the tens of thousands of dollars, but the more expensive is in the hundreds of thousands.👘

After doing this song as an April Fool's, madiacs loved it so much they made an album. So Kanami added the traditional instruments to a number of band maid songs. I actually like Secret Maiko Lips better than Secret My Lips, Kanami write all of the music, Miku also redid the lyrics into the Kyoto dialect, which is impressive, well I speak japanese so it was cool for me. The reason is Kyoto is where geisha culture is centered. The song to look for is Gion Cho, that one is actually a new song only on the Band Maiko album, it is not a remake of a band maid song and there is an MV for it. The only other side work is Miku, she formed her own band Cluppo and it is just her and some dudes to play as a backing band. The songs are great, though more Jpop than Jrock. She also started Band Maid if you didnt already know. The other members are not part of Cluppo, at least not openly. Though there are theories that Kanami is writing the music. And if you saw the Live Streams concert they did, Day Of Maid during covid, ( I did see it) She did a Cluppo song as an opener before band maid came on stage. And finally, there is a christmas acoustic concert, (no christmas songs that is what they named it) They redid 14 of their band maid songs all acoustic and it is amazing how they turned some of these hard rock songs into acoustic. You will see all 5 of them sing by the way, kanami shreds an acoustic, and Akane for a couple of songs plays a Cajon for a couple of songs.

"Secret My Lips" is the Band-Maid song that's being covered here, it has a great MV. In addition to an EP with other slightly altered covers of Band-Maid songs, Band-Maiko released one original song, "Gion-Cho". Which has it's own beautiful MV. Thanks for the reaction!

Just to let you know, a maiko is a geisha in training. There is a video documentary of the Maids making the video. The outtakes are funny. One seen show Misa bending over laughing her butt off after doing that sound she made. There is also a seen where the videographers had Akane walk us stone steps wearing the kimono and the platform wooden sandals. The look she gave the group was "If I fall someone dies."

Band Maiko is a concept album, without a doubt, (but not a joke) with 6 songs rearranged with traditional instruments and a seventh Gion-Cho (which I recommend to you) created especially for this album. What a pity there won't be a Band Maiko II. THANKS.

A fun part of this joke they ran with was that they did interviews as this band, with their own names slightly changed, and acting as if they were rivals to bandmaid.
There are not many bands that are worth examining outside of their music, but these lovable goof balls are just as entertaining "off stage" as they are on.

Nice to meet you. I always enjoy looking at your works.
I am Japanese and I would like to explain the lyrics used in this song.
(I try to comment on Band-Maiko's reactions with this explanation, so I know some of you who read this comment section have already read it somewhere else, but I'll post it here as well.)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In all the songs of BAND-MAIKO, Saiki uses the word called "京ことば Kyo-kotoba(Kyoto dialect)".
The Kyo-kotoba has many special phrases that are different from the so-called "Kansai-ben(Kansai region dialect. Kyoto is included in the Kansai region)", and even if you are from Kyoto, it is not a word that ordinary people other than maiko and geisha use on a daily basis.
Many maiko are not from Kyoto, but when working as a maiko in Kyoto, it is not desirable to use the dialect of the region in which they were born and raised.
Therefore, the training content of Maiko includes the acquisition of this Kyo-kotoba.
The Kyo-kotoba is, so to speak, a "common language" for maiko and geisha.
※ "Maiko(Pronunciation is my-ko)" means a person in the apprenticeship stage of Geiko (Geisha).

BAND-MAIKO is their April Fool's Day persona. Though their recent April Fools Day project was Miku's side project Cluppo. Obviously, it would be infinitely more difficult to tour as BAND-MAIKO than just wearing Maid Uniforms, and so, not at all practical. It is pronounced (My-Co), hence the play on words where 'Secret My Lips' becomes 'Secret Maiko Lips'. Now you have to do their other OMV, 'Gion-Cho'. There's also a Making Of 'Gion-Cho' video.

This is part of the legend of Band-Maid. They never stop giving. This is what I call their 'April Fool's Gift' to their fans ... a song that is a 'mystery' that can only be explained by hearing it!
Mostly they did a lot of 'covers' of their Band-Maid songs, but they did one very very special song; 'Gion-Cho', an original for Band-Maiko.
Gion-Cho is not only special for being an original Band-Maiko song, but it's also special in that before this most of Band-Maid's song creation was largely a collaboration between Miku (lyrics) and Kanami (music and arrangements) ... that's not to say the other band members didn't contribute, but in comparison Miku & Kanami did most of the work.
Gion-Cho was near the very start of the point where Kanami put her foot down (gently & in a friendly way) and told the others that they should do more in creation of the songs and the song ideas .... to that point, Gion-Cho is where this really started, and one of the few songs where Kanami does not do any lead parts in the song and lets the 'lead' parts be handled by Miku and Saiki's vocals and MISA and Akane's playing.
I am a huge fan of Kanami, I consider her the Mozart of modern rock, but Gion-Cho, without any guitar solos, and a lot of the work done by the other band members (under Kanami's supervision) turned out to be easily on my top 2 or 3 of all Band-Maid/Maiko's songs. Kanami not only knows how to add 'more' to her guitar playing by knowing what to 'leave out', but she also has the skill and mentoring ability to improve the band and its music by knowing when to stand back and let the others shine ... in this case, a whole song where most people don't even notice Kanami didn't do a signature solo, or if they did they comment on how she didn't do one, and for some reason despite the love of her playing this song somehow did not suffer at all from not having one .... a mystery song that's hard to explain and has to be heard!!

This was an April Fools Day joke taken to the extreme. Folks took to this so much, the next year the released another Maiko vid with an original Maiko song ("Gion Cho") as well as a EP with a self covers done Maiko style. BTW, "Maiko Style" is not just traditional instruments added in. They actually change the lyrics to Kyoto dialect (which is the dialect used in Kyoto, where most of the modern Geishas are located). Not sure they're going to do more Maiko stuff in the future, though. But if you like this kind of fusion, check out Wagakki Band. They do this type of sound full time.

Buckle up, this might be a long one...
First, a maiko (my-ko) is a geisha in training. You're probably aware of what a geisha house is, a place where people would go to be served and entertained by women in flamboyant costumes. Kind of like a precursor to today's maid cafes. (see where they were going with this?)
Second, as has been pointed out already, Band Maiko was created as an April Fool's joke. Band Maid made an announcement that they were taking the band in a different direction and then released an EP with this and 5 other Band Maiko songs. As you can imagine, it caused quite a stir.
    Okay, no more numbering...
This song is actually a remake of one of Band Maid's songs, Secret My Lips. If you listen to both of them you will notice that the lyrics and vocals vary at points in the song. This is because Saiki is singing in a local dialect (I forget which one) which is more appropriate to maikos / geishas.
There is one more MV for a Band Maiko song, Gion Cho (ghee-on choe), which is an ode to Saiki's home town. Gion Cho (or Gion town) has a deep connection to geishas. (see Wiki excerpt below) If you read the lyrics there's a lot of references in the song to the training maikos would go through to become geishas. It's actually a quite lovely song.
Wiki excerpt: Gion is a district of Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan, originating as an entertainment district in the Sengoku period, in front of Yasaka Shrine (Gion Shrine). The district was built to accommodate the needs of travellers and visitors to the shrine. It eventually evolved to become one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan.
    Now, on to something different.
If you're that interested in modern music fused with traditional Japanese instruments, you should check out the Wagakki Band which does just that, fuses traditional instruments with rock. Start with Senbonsakura which is the first song of theirs that I discovered.
    Obligatory link: ruclips.net/video/K_xTet06SUo/видео.html
Live version, if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/SX-L7DgP4fs/видео.html
There, that was _that_ long. 🙂

Also, the other project was Miku was a solo-artist, with the name Cluppo (Kuruppo) in what she calls HippyPop (poppier than pop, i'd say). Check out "Peace and Love" (1st single) and "With You", if you wanna see Miku as a proper lead singer :D

For more Maiko, I suggest in this order probably listening to the original first, in parenthesis):
-Gioncho -only original Maiko track, has MV
-Tora and Tora (One and only)
    -Ansan (Anemone)
    -Screaming (Screaming)
    -Akasimahen (Awkward)
    -Yolosiosu (Yolo)

    @greylocke100 10 месяцев назад +7

This is sung in the traditional Kyoto dialect instead of the Kansai Dialect Miku usually uses. When Saiki was trying to learn it to sing, she kept having issues with the pronunciation so Miku had to record Saiki's vocals so she could "Hear" the correct pronunciation and learn it.
Which makes me wonder just how many dialects of Japanese does Miku know? She has been known to use at least 4 different dialects. When she was trying to get into the music business she worked for an educational company filming educational videos on pronunciation for businesses. There are a couple videos around of her saying the correct way of saying various words while in a class room setting.

Thank you for showing us such a wonderful reaction to Japan's BAND MAIKO.
This song & MV was released as an April Fool's joke at a time when they weren't as famous as they are now.
From the perspective of future stories, this video uses over-dramatized, comical, and stereotypical Japanese "tradition."
Although there are some exaggerations, I think you will enjoy it.
Also, this song is not an original by BAND MAIKO, but is a remix of a pure rock track that has already been released by BAND MAID, layered with traditional Japanese instruments (some of the parts are original). .
If you are looking forward to the concept of BAND MAIKO, we have a special song originally created from scratch as BAND MAIKO, so please take a look.

There's so much to unpack here. Band maid did this as an April Fool's joke on their fans, saying they were changing their style. A Maiko is basically an apprentice Geisha learning the traditions and duties of the Geisha culture. They ended up doing a 6 song album with two really good official music videos, this one and Gion-cho, another amazing video which I tend to like better. Miku and the group put a LOT of work into these videos, which were shot in Kyoto, the ancestral home of the geisha culture in Japan. Miku even used the dialect common to Kyoto in the lyrics of the song. So this was not some slapped-together, off-the-cuff project. There are several excellent "making of" videos for these songs that are very interesting to see. First, the traditional instruments were electronically added by sound engineers, who worked closely with Kanami, who now uses electronic sounds in some of their videos. She just sucks up knowledge and retains it, just amazing. After watching these videos I did some research into the Geisha culture and it was quite enlightening. A full traditional geisha costume consists of seven layers of clothing weighing up to 35 pounds. The geishas have to be dressed by some one because it is impossible to do alone. The sash, or obi, has to be pulled to a tight and restrictive fit that has to be very uncomfortable. In the videos, it's mentioned that though the ladies only wore basically one layer of clothing, the traditional kimonos are made from very heavy and stiff fabrics and Akane had to take breaks because the sleeves were very heavy to her, as she never wears sleeves while playing. The video for "Gion-Cho" is much more artful and cinematic than this one, showing more the the traditional elements of maiko training, and also showing some magnificent scenes of Kyoto, a really beautiful city. A friend who has been there watched the video and said everything was just the way it is shown. I believe that Baby Metal has filmed some videos in Kyoto also. Great reaction !!! We look forward to many more. Another group you might want to check out if you already haven't is Glim Spanky, a classic blues rock group from Japan that is just brilliant. Their inspirations are the 60's British invasion groups, especially the Beatles. The vocalist/guitarist Remi Matsuo is one of the best I've seen, with a throaty growl reminiscent Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and Grace Slick. The best one to start with is "Circle of Time" from their 2020 RUclips Live concert. I Think you will be pleased.

  • @garylai363
    @garylai363 10 месяцев назад

This song (Maiko version) and Blooming are always fighting for #1 and 2 for me. The thing with this song is that the prechorus and chorus melodies are just so catchy and easy to listen to, that it's enjoyable as someone who might not be into the hard rock genre. But then you have the usual Band-Maid complexities of layering, excellent composition and writing, and all the other good stuff to dig in to.
The thing that makes this version stand out over Secret My Lips is that shamisen that is always present, which drives the pace of the song and brings it more upbeat. Also, in the bridge after the solo, they went for a softer, jazzier feel, using the Japanese instruments to frame it. Secret My Lips bridge comes back pretty hard. There's a whole Band-Maiko (MY-ko) album with a few covers of their own songs, as well as Gion-Cho, an original song just for the concept.

The only band almost as good as Band-Maid! Always love the MISA howl! Most definitely need to check out "Gion Cho", the only true original song done by them, and its awesome! They are all so beautiful in the traditional garb!
