I kinda wanna know what happened in those timelines that led to luí kang vs raiden now.
MK9 was suppose to be another resetted timeline, which is why it's story continued from MK9 to MK11, but MK11 is the start of another timeline, while still using MK9's timeline. MK9's Raiden received visions from MK Armageddon's Raiden, but the details and settings are different, which is why MK9's raiden was constantly failing because he kept trying to prevent a future that could happen, but wasn't possible because of the different details. The important thing though is, they have similar details in all of them, like the cyber initiative, and Liu kang and Raiden fighting.
@@taylorchong6327 There is also the fact that JAX wasn't in the first mortal kombat and he never lost his arms in the original timeline until he became a half cyborg prior to armageddon. Or that MK10 Mileena has lips while her previous selves never had, all because she lived longer so the Edenian genes started to remove the tarkatan traits. And by the looks of it, the next timeline will borrow from what boon and tobias helped to produce, which was the TV show with the Great Kung Lao.
@Bitch Baby They were bionic Implants on the top of his arms, even the movie and cartoon adressed that, he felt that he wasn't strong enough to deal with the outworld invasion. Raiden: "In each timeline, I completely body Lui Kang." Lui Kang: "That cannot be..." Raiden: "Sometimes I even finish him with friendship just to spice it up a little." (Kung Lao smugness intensifies)
It's because Liu Kang has no hat. If Kung Lao was the Chosen One, he could fight Raiden in hat-to-hat kombat and win, because his hat is not just cool but also useful. Raiden's hat is only cool, but Liu Kang has no hat. Liu Kang is the Chosen One so he beats Kung Lao. Its like rock, paper, scissors. Raiden >>> Liu Kang (Cool Hat >>> Chosen One) Liu Kang >>> Kung Lao (Chosen One >>> Cooler Hat) Kung Lao >>> Raiden (Cooler Hat >>> Cool Hat) Kronika knows this, which is why she manipulates the timeline so that Liu Kang has no hat and Kung Lao is never the Chosen One. Kronika has a crown, crowns are like the king of hats, that makes her the Hat Queen and therefore the most powerful of gods (the Elder Gods are dead because their hats are lame/none). By giving Liu Kang his power, Raiden gave him a "spiritual hat", allowing him to match Kronika as the Fire God. Theoretically, the most powerful of all would be Kung Lao with Raiden's power, which would make him the Hat God Chosen One. This possibility is an immense risk to Kronika. Thus, Liu Kang is always the Chosen One and never wears a hat.
@@bossshun9 yeah thats basically everytime because he was trying prevent stuff from happening but keeps fucking it up when he was fighting liu kang in every timeline u can tell why shao kahn succeeded in Armageddon because raiden was fighting liu kang and mkx start to get worse when liu kang and the others became revenants. So much emotion, revelation, and thought packed into this onc scene. The biggest impact, is after the first part of the flash back. We all think we know whats going on, Raidens recalling the events of Mk 9, just like in mk 9 her recalled the events of Armageddon. What we werent expecting was that transition of lui kang when he gets knocked back into the scene of him breaking through the wall, giving our brains a few seconds to process whats going on, making it aware to the viewer that this moment, and the history of all mortal kombat moments, are now being tied to a single action in the cannon. The tragic nature that Raiden has always killed Liukang along with the slowly increasing organ music and chants, to me makes this not only the best scene in the series, but too a long time fan, one of the best scenes ever.
It also implies that Kronika changed the timeline to have Shao Kahn win in Armageddon and not Taven. It makes too much sense to not be true. But that would mean every change or retcon is also Kronika's doing. There might even be multiple Kronikas in different timelines working against one another unknowingly as the titans of their timelines work against them. It's all one big causality loop creating infinite realities where each one the One Being is trying to resurrect himself but Gods and Mortals threaten to shatter the realms until there's nothing left but stray atoms.
WHAT IF: The Truth Shinnok was cast out for speaking was that they were all puppets of Kronica repeating timelines for her plan of balance and a new era. Raiden changing and being more ruthless was Shinnok's only hope of stopping Kronica and her schemes cause he knows Raiden is a threat to her hence he says "Our fight has changed you for the better" "You wear MY AMULET, you embrace THE TRUTH the elder gods (Cetrion) deny, the TRUTH i was cast out (shot down by Cetrion influenced by Kronica) for speaking"
Bro!!! If this is true that would be so dope it would also show that even the Elder Gods were just toys to here but then it beg the question was Mortal Kombat Armageddon also part of her plan and was she the one who started it all?
@@LilDoozyy most likely, Armageddon was the initial timeline cleaner, so that kronika could restart freshly a new era with all the powerfull souls lost during this bloody fight ( her power requires a lot of those ). @@sirjazz1268 Actually, Armageddon was solution made by the Elder Gods via Argus and Delia to protect the realms from collapsing. There were too many powerful kombatants within the realms and their fights slowly were unmaking the very fabric of the universe. One of two results were forseen to happen by Delia should either Taven or Daegon win: 1.) All fighters present die on the spot, or 2.) they will be stripped of all their powers. Sadly, Shao Khan wins, killing everyone. Kronika had no real need to restart the timeline then. Shinokk was alive and good and evil were fairly balanced.
This scene is incredible. I know some people weren’t fans of it but I love how they put the focus back on Liu Kang and just how important of a character he is. This and him becoming Fire God Liu Kang were such satisfying moments as fans of the character. They did so good with this story.
100%. Coming off of MKX where Liu Kang felt like a forgotten afterthought, this was so, so pleasing. Everything from how they tied it back to MK9 and used it as a platform to continue to explore Liu Kang and Raiden's relationship, to restoring Liu Kang as the centre of the storyline.
cupio de cupis Raiden isn't human, its obvious why he is an asshole for many... Because his life is much diffrent. For gods he seems kind, because they have diffrent way of thinking.
I was going crazy over this scene today. The different transitions, the change of outfits over the course of Combat and Dark Liu Kang changing back over time was just MAGNIFICENT!
Seeing Zombie Liu Kang from Armageddon made my day. I love the idea that the reason for all of these games seemingly conflicting timelines are all because of Kronica. That’s the top tier retconning I adore.
It’s crazy to think that raiden taught his pupil so well, that in every timeline they fight: they’re evenly matched. Except for the immortality part at least.
Not just deserved, Liu Kang has demostrated time and time again that he could not be underestimated, and had the potential for greatness! He defeated Shao Kahn, Shang Sung, Shinnok, Goro and Kintaro together! Kronika possibly feared Liu Kang's success. So it makes sense why she has been behind the scenes tampering with everyone's life and fate in the MK universe. I can't say for sure just what exactly drove her to this recycling of timelines, but it's clear that she did fear Liu Kang's powers. Although we all know the real truth behind this, Kronika is just a retconning Fan-fic creation thought up by Ed Boon to explain why certain portions of MK's story (past, present, and alternate present) were botched, and making up for past mistakes in MK's Canon. But I don't mind it, this story could actually be the finale for the Series in it's entirity, and honestly I would be fine with that, especially if Ed Boon decides to come up with a different Fighting game series in the future.
I do like the contrast between Liu Kang's 'Enough of your madness! If you must die, then so be it.' line. If I'm remembering things right, then when Liu Kang said that to Raiden back in MK9, he sounded genuinely furious at Raiden, given that his attempts to prevent shit from hitting the fan in the future just made things worse and most recently got Kitana killed, with Raiden killing him only being an accident that he greatly regretted. Here though, Raiden's the furious one and Liu Kang's trying to get him to listen to reason. This shows with how much more somber the line is compared to how it is in MK9.
For some reason seeing these timelines made me feel sad like no matter what happened these two would grow apart and end up fighting each other. All because of a "new era" that just kept repeating...
@MrHoppers002 I think him being cast out was always a part of her overall plan anyway him being an outcast fit the mold of him being the ultimate evil.
In Kronika's bio she's a titan which she yelled out fighting Liu Kang they suppose to be parents of the Elder Gods Kronika most likely the only titan cause she made the universes.
@MrHoppers002 it is in Liu Kang's ending now as we all know not all endings are canon but the fact that they still fight in his ending says a lot especially confirmed by this scene
I've said it before and I'll say it again. This game has some of the best facial animation I've ever seen. You can see the face of regret as Lu Kang was about to face Raiden in mk11 as to the face of anger in the first flashback scene. Love it.
@@eub3429nah man. Remodelling their faces gives it a new breath of fresh air. One thing I don't like is how the character designs getting too humanised. I loved how every character looked in in mk9 and older, but now the characters look so humanised they're starting to lose the charm they had in the first place, I mean look at sindel, she had perfect designs up until her latest iteration where they dumbed her down so much she's just boring.

Kronica: We have repeated this exact conversation so often, in so many timelines, I have lost count. Raiden: Oh, so it means you failed countless times, while I won all of them and forced you to reset? Go on, let's see if you can do it better this time.
Actually Raiden lost them all. His goal has always been protecting the timeline he is in while Kronika want to reset them and try new things. Kronika wants the realm to keep on fighting forever so every time they destroy each other/unite, she rewind and make a new timeline. But she couldnt erase Raiden without helps because he is also an immortal.
@@mdd4296 But then it means that Raiden did win in some cases, and that's why she did a reset on the first place. In fact, because Kronica was forced to reset countless times, she did lose countless times, even if Raiden failed too. But that's the thing. If Raiden fails it is likely that Earthrealm, and possibly even Outworld, isdoomed, forcing a reset. But if he is victorious and the realms are in peace, it is also a reset. Even if the realms are in conflict for a long time, Raiden will either try to make peace or Dark Raiden will try to destroy one of them, also forcing a reset.
In terms of music, sound design, editing, direction, and choreography, this is the single coolest thing Netherrealm Studios has ever done. Phenomenal scene.
Showing the other timelines made a lot more senses after beating MK1, i thought it was an excuse to show off their custom parts, but nope. They were teasing the final battle with different timeline characters. Seeing Kano Sonya and Quan Kang was crazy.

MK vs DCU - Apokolips (Not sure on this one) MK3 - Subway MK: Deadly Alliance - Dragon Palace MK: Armageddon - Pyramid of Argus MK1 - Shrine Considering the fact that all of these areas were modeled for the story cutscene, makes me genuinely hope we see the return of all of these in the future as DLC, because all of these are amazing picks imo.
Raiden: We were always fighting! Well, exept that one timeline where Shang Tsung snapped your neck and you became a ghost while your body became a zombie. Liu Kang: What?! Raiden: What?
You also forgot to mention the part where Raiden got corrupted by his Suicide & thus becoming Dark Raiden in the Original Timeline. Where as the new timeline, he get's corrupted by Shinnok's dark magic while healing in the Jinsei Chamber, turning into Dark Raiden yet again.
Raiden: Oh and I also saw a timeline where you are the one who actually defeat Shinnok Liu Kang: What?! Raiden: Yes, and then Kitana propose you, but you declined her offer... Liu Kang WHAT?! THE?! FUUUU???!!!!

So he would be punished by the Elder Gods after trying to merge the realms without winning Mortal Kombat. I suppose you already know it but... I had to said it lol Still, your idea its a cool retcon of the "he must win" line in MK9.
Well it sort of looks like raiden was throwing himself around the courtyard, while flashbacking. And scorpion and liu kang just watched him being mildly embarrassed
You both are right. All these instant flash backs were Raiden living the same outcome over and over again only 14,000,605 times or less. So, image how crazy it must have been to repeat all of that again.
So this mean that every combat in the series including versus and tournament mode are set in a different timeline? This would explain how they come back to live after every fataility.
Yup! Pretty much! Damn, no wonder why Raiden was losing it when he held the amulet. It drove him crazy to relive all those moments again every split second.
Finally someone understands it. Everything is now canon. The old 90s comics, DotR, every fanfiction, MKvDC, every ladder, every small battle, every dialogue before the match, every fatality, every friendship, every guest character, every ending and every MK fantasy is real and it is in its own timeline.

@@qGods He said in each of them they fought. And in each of them, Liu Kang died. Not that he beat Liu Kang. How do you explain that Quan Chi + Shang Tsung killed Liu Kang in one of them then? It's also not clear that Raiden beat Liu Kang in MK9. Rather, he accidentally killed Liu Kang only.
3:15 look for the cool easter egg in the background. Hsu Hao may be evil, and he may be a throwaway character, and he may be dead; but gotdamn, does he sell some good watches...
Kronica: “At long last you see the pattern” Also Kronica: “We’ve repeated this exact conversation in so many timelines I’ve lost count” This makes no sense😂
I mean could be that it took a bunch of timeline resets before a new Raiden manages to learn the truth The dumb part is Kronika literally telling Raiden "yea, you and Lui Kang together can beat me" when Raiden didn't know that yet
I think Kronika meant it more like, "FINALLY you figured it out. In previous timelines you reached the same conclusion way faster. Then I reset things, of course, like I'm gonna do again soon. Toodles."
Well, I imagine Kronika views time differently as the Keeper of Time and a Titan. But at the same time, she simply was following the same pattern that occurred from previous timelines too by essentially "mocking" Raiden when she said he'd figured it out in other timelines, and also her arrogance making her think things wouldn't change even IF she told Raiden why she keeps putting him and Liu Kang against each other, and thus allowing Raiden to stop her by making Liu into the being with enough power to defeat Kronika and end her menace.
She probably didn't tell him anything the first time they had that conversation but Raiden figured it out on his own and almost made Fire Thunder God Lui Kang a reality. There's probably a ton of timelines where she literally tells him the exact same thing and Raiden fails even harder at coming up with the idea.
And the fact that all of the outfits they were wearing in each timeline is an alternate outfit for both characters in the game is beautiful so much detail in the lore and story every time they fight its the same move a kick a punch a throw and repeat its so beautiful to watch
I think, even in this situation, the bond between Liu Kang and Raiden remains strong (even when it's negative.) After all, the fact that Kronika is even doing this New Era stuff at all means she has failed to do so in every other timeline she made.
6:41 Kronika tells about all the time they fought. 7:00 she tells Raiden he can't win. And so does her. Lol. She never win, in fact she lost more then him if you think about it. If she reset the time line it means Raiden had the upper hand

Made me smile seeing the original timeline being shown; Raiden and Liu Kang's corpse fighting during *Armageddon* at the Pyramid of Argus. Can still see Shang Tsung's body still collapsed at the stairs. As well as Blaze waiting at the top!
Gosh I love the character models and mocap in this game. Liu Kang's subtle facial expressions when he delivers his line at 2:34 gets me every time, how his eyes frown after saying "so be it". I think I'm getting a bit emotional too because I'm so glad heroic Liu Kang is finally back, and the direction they gave his acting sells it well to me (including his VS intro dialogues).
This is probably my favorite cinematic mk moment. One of my best friends and I have been playing mortal kombat since we were kids and have always mained Raiden and liu kang respectively. We had a falling out once, but we've always reconnected no matter what timeline we're in.
mk 9 was a reboot, turned out pretty neato. And they legit got so much done with this MK timeline. Theres really no threat anymore. Itll feel too washed out and beaten.
This scene was such a great surprise and is probably in my opinion the best narrative twist and plot point in the entire series. You think you know where it's going and it starts off on that path but then subverts your expectations for the twist. Also there's no dialogue in the actual fight scene but it doesn't need it to convey exactly what's going, that's how you show and not tell plot.
Ooooh!!!! Raiden was fighting Liu Kang right before his fight with Shao Khan at the end of Armageddon. That explains how he died, Liu Kang must have finished Shang Tsung and fought with Raiden after.
I mean you want proof just look at Liu Kangs ending in armageddon he still fights with Raiden obviously since that it is liu's ending he wins but he still fights raiden

In another the climax happens in the chaos realm
In another the climax happens in deadly alliance
In another the climax happens in mk Armageddon?

Armageddon
What about mk vs dc

Raiden >>> Liu Kang (Cool Hat >>> Chosen One)
Liu Kang >>> Kung Lao (Chosen One >>> Cooler Hat)
Kung Lao >>> Raiden (Cooler Hat >>> Cool Hat)
Kronika knows this, which is why she manipulates the timeline so that Liu Kang has no hat and Kung Lao is never the Chosen One.

The thing is raiden always been angry because he have to deal with kronika's bullshit and liu kang with him the reason why he was fighting raiden because the death and destruction of earthrealm he caused.
Hell yeah, excellent comment and spot on with how it captured that emotional investment.
Hope it was done on purpose. It would be cool that Shinnok was conscious of this.
But raiden in a moment of the timeline sent the information of the armageddon threat to his younger self, thus leading to all the f**k ups he made in 9 and the changes that followed in 10.
@@LilDoozyy Sadly the first shown timeline isn't refered much, I hope it's a little expanded just to close it in the next game. Also, I would have liked to see Taven or Argus here, they were important in the end of that timeline.

Actually Raiden lost them all. His goal has always been protecting the timeline he is in while Kronika want to reset them and try new things. Kronica: “At long last you see the pattern”
Also Kronica: “We’ve repeated this exact conversation in so many timelines I’ve lost count” This makes no sense😂
I mean could be that it took a bunch of timeline resets before a new Raiden manages to learn the truth
The dumb part is Kronika literally telling Raiden "yea, you and Lui Kang together can beat me" when Raiden didn't know that yet
That still rather contradicting.
MK9 and MKs ps2's timelines it's so awesome to see these stages and flashbacks
Akane Rose they should make the stages dlc
@@franktheking6902 fingers crossed
Ps2 timelines?
@@OGStarlightKY yeah have played or at least sees these stages in mk ps2
Akane Rose Mortal Kombat is not a ps2 game. It’s original timeline, not ps2 timeline.
It’s good to see liu kang again the one we all know and love. And it’s good to see raiden back to his old self.
5:41 The look on Liu Kang's face says
"Yeah, I doubt that very much."
doubt Raiden is lying tho, he killed liu kang in both timelines once in Armageddon and mk 9
Lacking Creativity Issa joke
Wow, I didn't notice that. He gave him the side eye.
@@TekkLuthor
Yeah, I thought that was hilarious.
You know when your dad talks shit and you know you can't say anything back
I think, even in this situation, the bond between Liu Kang and Raiden remains strong (even when it's negative.) After all, the fact that Kronika is even doing this New Era stuff at all means she has failed to do so in every other timeline she made.
Brooo that’s true
6:41 Kronika tells about all the time they fought.
7:00 she tells Raiden he can't win.
And so does her. Lol. She never win, in fact she lost more then him if you think about it. If she reset the time line it means Raiden had the upper hand
@@TheSenhorcaioo Exactly. How is she supposed to be this master of time when she can't stop one god from fucking her shit up?
I love when they're fighting on the Pyramid of Argus. Armageddon was the best.
Armageddon was the G.O.A.T of MK games especially playing on the Wii
Let's see... from order
MK9 version of MK3 rooftop
Mk2 Deadpool
MKvsDc Final Stage
MK3 Subway
MKDA Dragon King Room
MKA. Pyramid
MK... something? I know it is the courtyard.... MK1... or 4...?
And that is all I can tell.
No, there's only one battle from pre-MK9 era. Armageddon's one.
@@sandro2355 1. I was naming the stages that appeared in the whole flashback thing.
2. No. Lui Kang and Raiden had fought against each other in MkvsDC
3. Even if we dont count there battle in MkvsDC, your comment is not the point. The whole point of the flashbacks was that the MK storyline was retconned so many time by Kronika that the Arrmegeddon battle was only one of many battle that had happened.
@@Linkaro2 Liu Kang and Raiden didn't have a fight in MKxDC. And I agree about retcons
Batman is canon in mortal kombat :v?
@@DX372 Everything can be canon due to that Kronika thingy.
Made me smile seeing the original timeline being shown; Raiden and Liu Kang's corpse fighting during *Armageddon* at the Pyramid of Argus.
Can still see Shang Tsung's body still collapsed at the stairs. As well as Blaze waiting at the top!
That was a different mkarmaggeddon timeline. Notice the dead monks ?

@Avalanche TV No it isn't it looks like it
1 Word: Chaosrealm
@Bitch Baby They did fight in MK vs DC though
@Bitch Baby meant to reply to someone else
I commend the devs for recreating the MK9 scene. If they were lazy they would use the original footage but they made it from the ground up.
@Roey quiet
"Mr. Raiden, I don't feel so good..."
Oof
Shut up Lu kain no one cares
Ahhh never ending reboots
It kills a little the emotion, but I hope next timeline is definitive.
Stibbs I thought that too
bootleg Edge of Tomorrow?
mk 9 was a reboot, turned out pretty neato.
And they legit got so much done with this MK timeline. Theres really no threat anymore. Itll feel too washed out and beaten.
Stibbs which has now been broken
@@nobleskywalker4639 Why would anyone need proof? It's literally in the ending of Armageddon lol
That's why Liu Kang called the choosen one
I think each stage is really interesting like the pyramid of Argus, Shang Tsungs castle with the Soulnado, a shattered realm (probably the Chaos realm). I only wish they would’ve included Liu Kangs Ghost vs Raiden that would’ve been awesome!
apparently it wasn’t the chaos realm but apokilips from mk vs dc
This was heartbreaking to see raiden and liu kang against each other in alternate timelines. And kronika was the person behind the strings.
I swear 3:52 is Armageddon. The temple, zombie Liu Kang, Dark Raiden. I can’t be the only one who sees it
