  • First, The classes were a blast. Don ran well organized hands on tooling classes.
Don Gonzales took the time to connect with each person in the class. The class size was 15. That seemed a good class size as it brought more questions for everyone to learn from. All participants seemed to really enjoy the teaching style that Don used.
Don knows the right questions to ask to quickly figure out where each person was as far as experience and skill level than quickly tailored the instruction for each person. He had plenty of supplies from Hermann Oak Leather for us to use. Don provided handouts and additional patterns for us to take with use and I believe helped each person tool their panel the best that they could.
If you are considering signing up for a class taught by Don Gonzales, I would highly recommend it. I believe it was one of the best investments in the craft that I spent hard earn money on.

Thank you for the overview and review of your recent class, Robert. Your day two finished project looks fantastic! It is good to hear that Don's personality in person is consistent with what comes across in his videos. His personality is the type of instructor I would do well to learn under. Perhaps I will have the opportunity to learn from him directly at some point in the future, once I feel as though I am ready to dive into tooling as you have done.

Yeah it’s interesting to try and figure out what a person back. I think I’ve decided it’s ourselves. I say that because I held myself back from trying to tool. I’m working on a different type of tooling now and it’s coming out good. I do have to say that my panel was the best it could be because when I got to a sticking point I could ask him. Now on my own I have to figure some out myself. I think without the class that I wouldn’t have carried through the hard first spots. Well maybe I would have. Enjoy your weekend

He also has a tooling series from a few years ago that include 2 floral patterns, a horse head and a skull with a head dress. Each pattern is broken down into 3 or 4 videos and you can tool right along with him.

Robert, I think your tooling looks nice. I wouldn't wrinkle my nose at it. Being good at it takes practice. I sure am no expert and will not be teaching classes to anyone. Don is a nice guy I think. He is right about HO for tooling. It does burnish nicer than most import stuff. Price difference is just what keeps me from buying it. Though I think some burnish issues may also be from older leather. The older leather is, the more it dries out, and loses oils. Makes it harder to tool and make it harder to work with. Most of the leather I have bought does not have date stamping, so you never know how old it might be until you cut into it. How it's tanned sure had a lot to do with it too. I just bought some Mimosa to try from Tandy. I'm curious to see how it tools.
I think education no matter what the subject, is valuable. You are providing it yourself right through this channel. I doubt I'll ever go that far away to take a class, but I bet you sure learned a lot. I think this year I am going to buy a couple of Don's kits. The golf ball one looks pretty interesting.

Thanks for the comment! I agree on everything that you said. I did purchase his golf ball pattern with tooling pattern. I plan to create a video and see how it goes. You got me thinking about what effect it would have on the tooling with a light oil ahead (a day before) of casing and then tooling the leather. Have to see.
