I can't believe you did my boy Arcades dirty like that!
He doesn't just rely solely on combat at all; yeah, he makes it very easy to go aggro, (and really what other aggro deck gives you a bunch of 4/4s and 6/6s for 1-2 mana that replace themselves?) but he lends himself real well to combos as well, and the best part is that, by and large, you're comboing off with the SAME cards you're going aggro with, which gives you a unique ability to pivot between aggro and combo that few decks outside of maybe Krenko can provide. They're not just the same combos you get in any other deck, either: What other deck is going infinite with Axebane Guardian and Overgrown Battlement? And while plenty of other decks can go infinite with bounce/flicker shenanigans, how many are doing it with the aforementioned 1-2 cost 6/6es that ALSO draw you a card? And the sheer number of asymmetric board wipes? Chef's kiss.
He basically epitomizes everything you said you liked about other commanders; Feather is S-tier because she lets you play with cards that no other commander does? Well, so does Arcades! You like cards that provide a powerful effect, but have some weakness that you need to work around? Well, your reliance on protecting Arcades is totally that weakness!
Arcades may not be the #1 commander on EDHRec, but he's #1 in my heart. Arcades: You are my wonderwall.

I'm building a Krenko deck atm so it was cool to see him get some love in the video and comments. I just love and prefer the simpler commanders and knowing I'm running mono red goblins makes it easier to process while playing. I like that the list was formatted not by raw power but took into consideration how much fun a card is and how broken a card is. My first ever commander deck was a precon vampire deck "Vampiric bloodline". It was an okay deck to start with and once I researched and bought cards to pump it up it became almost too good. The commander is fair (Has to attack in order to take advantage of the blood token ability) but I realized in my play group that it ramps up so fast it's nearly been unbeatable unless I have mana trouble. I only bust it out now when I'm on a losing streak with my other decks and need a pick me up lol.

Take these commanders with two steps to their effects. Take Arcades. His eminence effect could be defender creatures can still attack. His on field effect would be to draw a card. It allows you to not get completely shut out just from having 3 people remove you commander over and over again.

I would put Windgrace in S tier. I'm biased because he's my favorite deck. But I have it built in a way that is landfall, but is extremely fast! I would say in 98% of games I will have at least 10 lands out by turn 3 and then I'm looking for one of my infinite landfall combos. You can achieve this through Kodama of the East Tree + a Bounce Land + any landfall token payoff. Or Ashaya Soul of the Wild + Quirion Ranger + any landfall token payoff. The best part about the 2 combos is that you can use any "Permanent Entering the battlefield" effect to use as a combo piece also. Like Altar of the Brood to Mill people out or Impact Tremors to damage their faces.

Krenko is the commander I would recommend to people who are just getting into edh. He's very simple, there's a million cards that can go in the deck, and his skill ceiling can be pushed up to the door of cedh so he can be played at any casual power level. As well, he's unlikely to be stricken by power creep any time soon unless they print a strictly better goblin commander

Kenrith isn't just a goodstuff commander, he's very obviously a "Politics" commander, which is also an absolute flavor win for a king - all five of his abilities can target any player which means that you can use all of them as leverage in the game:
R: Did opponent A just amass a big summoning sick army? Strike a deal with them to point it at opponent B in exchange for Trample and Haste.
1G: Is opponent X attacking opponent Y right now? Choose one of them who you'd like to be your friend and screw up combat maths in their favor.
2W: Is your buddy getting dangerously low on life? Heal them back up to keep them around as a decoy for the other opponents for a few more turns while also keeping your buddy happy.
3U: Is one of your opponents out of cards? Offer to refill their hand in exchange for a longer lasting alliance or a particular favor if you can think of one.
4B: Does opponent 1 have a problematic enchantment on the battlefield but opponent 2 has a Reclamation Sage in the bin? I'm sure they would like to get it back in exchange for pointing the ETB at the enchantment.
Just a few examples of how you can use Kenriths abilities in a politicky way, there are plenty more things you can do with them depending on the gamestate and what the other players bring to the table...

I like when we get uncommon legendary creatures and more niche commanders where its not samey and busted like golos, and is more towards something unique. A few thoughts:
Historic Brawl is awesome and I’m so glad it’s permanent however, some of the five-C commanders like Golos, Esika and Codie are absolutely miserable to play against, and the 100 cards and default landbase make for a lot of non-games. Also not every card that is good in commander will be good in brawl and vice versa. And of course the card selection for some commanders are not quite there, but it’s definitely my go-to format on Arena. And I agree with the tier list. Zaxara has poop art but is def A tier. And Paper Mario: Origami King was a blast, but the combat system probably will keep me from playing it again even though the rest of the game was so awesome.

    • @NitpickingNerds
      @NitpickingNerds  3 года назад +2

I’ve had a good amount of fun with historic brawl, my one complaint in addition to what you noted has been that arena in general has just been crashing, right after I queue into games, so it’s led me to play less.
I’m about three quarters of the way through Oragami King and I definitely agree with you, it seems like a game you can play through once and have an amazing time, because the combat is just meh, and there’s no actual reason to get into fights other than if you really need confetti. I imagine that would really bog down a second play through

But you could use that card draw advantage to get to a combo to combo off and win as fast as possible. It's in the proper colors to ramp and have protection. But it could be fast enough to win quickly. Idk. What do you think? Everyone would expect it to be a low power deck until you win outta no where lol

As someone who owns Chulane, I can agree.
Also, Golos Dragons Maze, the activated ability isn’t that fun, but abusing the etb is where it’s at.
Kenrith politics, with cards that have restrictions, try to make an actual government.
Krenko looks fun, but I’ve make them concede with Curse of Death’s Hold.
    Muldrotha is just fun.
    Sisay legends voltron. Nuff said

I mostly agree with these, but surprisingly, the one I have something to say about is Kenrith. I agree being a 1 color 5 color goodstuff commander isn't a good thing, but at least his abilities are targeted, so you can gain other players life or res their creatures for them. I'd have given him a low D for this.

The problem with Kenrith I found was he overshadows whatever fun thing people try to do with him. I tried a political deck similar to the one on commander quarters but no one wants to politic with Kenrith around. I tried a ‘just trying to win with Happily Ever After’ fairytale theme version and I’ve played against the knight tribal version, but people just went all in on the smack down against the poor Kenrith player regardless.
For whatever cool thing there’s always a less threatening commander than Kenrith to be doing it with.

No, Golos is not a fine card. It's literally the best commander in any deck in Historic Brawl apart from ones that have a specific tribal or commander based synergy. If it wasn't for players who avoid using him, Historic Brawl would just be Golos vs. Other kinds of Golos decks all the time. (Kenrith has the same issue).

I wonder how you guys would rate something like Galazeth Prismari. He is very similar to Urza which is a very obnoxious card.
On one hand he is cool because he is limited to instant and sorceries and doesnt have a pay off stapled onto him like Urza does.
On the other hand he is still bonkers and interact well with stax pieces like winter orb. He also have a similar problem to Golos, that whenever you cast him he ramps you by 1, so if he dies the commander tax is kind of mitigated.
