Just giving my two cents on a common question I get!
Are video games okay if we're optimizing fitness and health?
I get asked this often. I think people expect me to advise against them.
To be fair, I think a great many people spend too long on video games. Hours upon hours. Before bed and after waking up.
But people also spend similar hours on television and social media. I don't know if it's that different.
And yes, if you want to be like a monk in your training, you may want to minimize or eliminate digital entertainment and maximize personal development.
But most people probably don't want this at the moment.
Like many things, I think games can be fun in moderation.
Especially if you're playing with others and bonding!
Happy to know your thoughts as well!
(Btw - my Twitch is just hybridcalisthenics.com/twitch. It is not super exciting. I think I do it just as a way to unwind with a small audience and also connected with many younger members).

This one came at the right time for me. I’ve just been spending ‘hours upon hours’ on video games this past week and I was already thinking “this can’t be all that healthy for me.” So thanks for the food for thought. I’d better dial back on the games for a bit.
Also, I’ll follow you on twitch!

@@Blimp91 Some more food for thought though, remember your brain is an important part of your life as well. You should always strive to train or exercise both the body and the mind however much you can each day. To that end, video games can be great for the mind, depending on the game. Most games will train your problem solving skills and your ability to work more efficiently to reach an objective. So don't feel guilty about playing video games so long as its not preventing you from working on your physical health as well.

I like video games too, but I'm using them as a form of escapism. So that's why I'm typically watching content like yours, because other opinions are important to me. From what I've learned, sitting to play games might not be the worst thing, but everything we do has some effect on our bodies. Removing natural pressures will increasingly have bigger effects the more we remove the difficulties in our lives. If you watch Jordan Peterson, you'll quickly pick up the idea that bearing some sort of responsibility gives your life more meaning. So, it's somewhat like a rat race to me. We seem to cause suffering when trying to make others lives too easy. Personally, I've experienced a great deal of unwitting condescension through micromanagement from parents when I was young; this is probably my best example, because it can cause a person to learn indecisiveness which can be a torturous way to live. Anyway, Jordan's ideas of bearing this burden or responsibility are really part of a larger principle. There is no long term gain without long term price, and if what we seek is to be more human then we should seek the pressures that formed us. Technology should be carefully considered, and used from a distance. It's just that everyone else has it too and they're not so nice, so we are stuck defending ourselves. So, optimistically, we're all in on something that overall makes us less human, it causes the human parts of us to suffer. Our relationships, et cetera.

@Monkey Balls That's just not true. All of those things, depending on what content you are consuming, is helping your brain. You gain knowledge, you learn to think in different ways while being given multiple perspectives on things... I firmly believe avoiding all of these things will stagnate your minds growth. Especially if you use these things optimally to learn, gain wisdom or exercise your brain. The people who tend to think they are better for not consuming content tend to be meatheads with a very narrow perspective in life.

I've been addicted to books since I learned to read, and I have the same issue - they're an escape mechanism rather than an activity in moderation. Video games get a bad rap, but anything can be unhealthy when not used properly or in a way that doesn't improve your quality of life.

Its all about what video games are used for. If its entertainment and a hobby: go for it. As long as all other parts of your life are doing good enough, there is no reason to enjoy some video games.
If you're using it to numb yourself or to escape from something: take a step back and work towards a solution.
I think his rule of thumb actually goes for every activity, even reading, working out our sinking into a relationship 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like, I'm familiar with the practice, but it's generally used to indicate that something is being quoted, or to connote that a series of past events are being listed. Are you doing it as a stylistic choice to emphasize your newlines instead of using a full line break? Or are you on some sort of device where the text input doesn't cooperate well with line breaks, maybe? Some other reason?
I'm not criticizing, I'm just really fascinated with the meta of language and how people perceive and use formats like that lol, and I've just never ever seen carrot newlines used to break up entirely normal sentences that flow naturally after each other as a standard paragraph.

Doesn't imply either are fun though. Both are very high stress. Most days I just lay in bed building energy again.

I’ve been playing video games for the majority of my life and it wasn’t till middle school where I would start to gravitate away. Why? Because being in musicals and band were more fun. Work hard and then feeling achieved when people like your performance. Heading in it high school, I’m more than definitely excited for new accomplishments.

That makes sense considering the 1 game I still play is Minecraft, I spend most of my time building new projects, as well as gardening and breeding animals.
It seems unachievable to do something like that full time, but one of my goals was to live a comfortable enough life with enough time to do stuff like that irl.
I bought some edible plants that I plan on growing, Im going to tear out all the weeds growing in this garden patch at my dad's house to attempt to make it all nice and taken care of

I've loved video games since I was a kid and being able to incorporate exercise into is even better (ie using a exercise bike or treadmill will gaming). Some dreams I have cant be achieved unless I make massive sacrifices to my lifestyle but I can still achieve them at a slower rate which I'm fine with. I prefer to spend my time with my kids and wife than spend it on a dream I can achieve at a slower a slower rate.

It’s something I’ve done all my life but I just don’t enjoy it anymore. I have many other things in life that make me happy though.

Completely agree! I was mostly addicted to Video games in a time where I was bullied sadly and it was escapism... now I'm luckily very happy and playing like 2-5 hours a week or less :) just so much more fun to do things that reward you in life or do things with friends. Glad I can do something better for the envoroment and even be happier. Still working on using my phone/TV less... going good so far :)

I used to play DND all the time.
My new boyfriend encouraged me to look at how I can make my real life and adventure instead of just playing pretend. So I have been training for a half marathon because I love running, I started weight lifting and want to build that hero physique and I bought a real life long sword. I will level up in real life and do the cool things my character can!

I've found that in balancing my life, that feeling of reward and accomplishment I get from exercising or doing something productive carries itself over to the games I play.
On top of that, games have been scientifically proven to aid your brain and nervous system in multiple ways, such as improving your reaction time or problem solving skills.

Also throwing in VR games these days can keep you active while getting the mental benefits from gaming. Beat Saber in particular is great, particularly the 360° tracks since they get you moving your legs too.

Honestly theres bugger all mental benefits to gaming from my experience. I wasted all my childhood addicted to them and all they did was make me unsociable, weak and upset. I would use the excuse that they help me with teamwork and strategy and shit, but it never did anything for me that applies in the real world. As soon as I moved away from gaming I became happy and had time for actual useful things.

especially with covid, I found myself (and still do) being sucked into my computer more than experiencing real life. I started a garden to get me out of the house for a bit each day and similarly it's given me that sense of reward now that I have some tomatoes flowering :)

I hadn't played my favorite video game in a month, and honestly nowadays I'm starting to get busier and busier (growing up am i right). But i think when I start playing again, I'll have a healthier outlook on it. Instead of playing it for 4-6 hours a night till 2 in the morning, probably limit myself to 1- 2 hours a night. Will make the next night a little more exciting since I'm not playing for as long.
