  • 'Binna Burra' is an Aboriginal place name meaning 'where the beech trees grow'. This is a love song to Binna Burra, in Lamington National Park, which I've long loved visiting. Countless times, I've hiked to the ancient Antarctic beech trees, descended to the Coomera lookout and various falls on the Coomera circuit, walked along the Border Track, and stayed in Binna Burra Lodge's rainforest safari tents and rooms.
Like so many others, I was deeply saddened to learn the historic mountain lodge was destroyed in the recent bushfires, and I spent many hours fearing for the nearby rainforest and wildlife. (At the time of writing this, I'd heard the good news that the rainforest campsite area, the teahouse, and Groom's cottage were ok. I'm praying most of the park's beautiful trees are as well.)
Writing this song was a way to process my own sadness and worry over the fires.
My heart goes out to all those who lost their homes in the bushfires, as well as the Binna Burra Lodge staff members. And I'm awed by all the brave firefighters who work tirelessly and fearlessly to protect lives, homes, businesses, and forests ... you are heroes.
Friends of Binna Burra has a Go Fund Me page to raise money for 'bringing back those unique assets that have made Binna Burra the very special place held in all our past guests’ memories.'
