Warren isn’t dead. But he is living alone in a remote Antarctic science station. Well, he _thinks_ he’s alone. But the distant giggling in the halls and the scratching at the windows seem to indicate otherwise…
This story has some strong Room 1408 vibes with the character slowly but steadily becoming more and more aware of the alien wrongness of his surroundings as the story continues.
I absolutely love the combination of vibes here. The style is masterfully reminiscent of Lovecraft and co. and it's a fun just picking out the references (not another Delapore!). But you can also very much tell it was written today. There seems to be something very quitessentially Gen-Z/Millennial about the horror trope of returning to a once cozy and welcoming but now creepy and decaying family/childhood setting. But the whole dated English resort angle also gives it some unmistakable local colour. Had me thinking of Fawlty Towers or every vacation episode every in a 70s-80s British sitcom.
IKR? "A Long Weekend at Happy Chambers" is amazing and, along w/HB's capable dynamic duo, a wonderful gift indeed for all horror fans and especially readers who deeply appreciate Lovecraft (and pals) various CH works and stories from related genres. HB spoils its listeners and enriches the world by performing this valuable and highly commendable public service: the adaptation and dissemination of culturally relevant long and short-form horror fiction masterpieces for the edification and enjoyment of all. So, yeah. Agreed.
Stunning! A slow burn tour through an aquarium of wrongness as our unreliable narrator attempts dutifully to do his job under increasingly psychotropic conditions. This cranks up the creepiness to unbearable levels. I am SO looking forward to this series. Alarm set for Wednesdays!
Wow for some reason my YT lost this video and had to scroll and scroll but all I could remember was candle man, wax, puppets and a camp! ⛺️ I tried search "HB camp" tags but didn't pop up, so went thru the entire channel video feed to locate this finally!! So whit shout out to HB for investing in proper cover art bc it ended my seemingly-ceaseless quest for this video!! So grateful I was able to track it down to finish the story! What a great plot and unique first person perspective storytelling. I can't get over the dirt and mud bed. Only question I have is if he visited as a child, wouldn't had encountered his own candleman or creature ?? I love how he was vindicated by the end of story that he wasn't in fact crazy amongst all the gaslighting and his brain was truly protecting him. Eek! I hope the characters editor who sent him there was able to avenge his partners death in another life and untold storyline, wishful thinking ofc. Thanks for sharing HB! 👻🩷
My shift just ended so I’ll have to wait till tomorrow :( but thank you for giving me something to look forward to i can already imagine the amazing job you’ve done with the amount of effort you put in thank you Ian!!
A bit of Whisper in the Dark, mixed with some famous Lovecraft candle matches, Carcousa elements, and some Hotel California for flavor! This was a good and very chilling one.
That description of Mrs. Biltmann was so horrible that Cthulhu woke up, shuttered and told me "That one was gross..." And then Mrs. Biltmann collapsed into a thousand crawling monsters and I almost died from the visual my brain created.
You guys just KILL it every time. I usually bemoan the infiltration of technology into all aspects of life. You can't even use the bathroom without artificial help in some places. But without that same technology none of us would be able to enjoy your labor of love. Love it!❤️🦄
I take it, then, that 1325 was the year of your birth. But in all seriousness, while automation and AI represent significant problems for many human beings, you're most saliently correct in noting that technology provide essential benefits.
@@KropotheadYes, l absolutely agree. Over the last few years I,ve got tired of the same old Oxbridge mafia authors and their stories all set in Cathedrals, Oxford Colleges, Graveyards etc. You might have said hypocritical sensibilities. It was such a delight to come across Uncle Tuggs by Michael Shea,a horror story of revenge from the grave but involving a cast of weed growing, womanising, red-neck hillbillies. It was a corker. Another is No 88 where a bag lady going about on a bus is actually the arbiter of fate to all that encounter her. Great stories and not a”drawing-room” in sight.
Excellent story. It reminded me the Case Of Charles Dexter Ward where the creatures were also incomplete. Also the Festival. The Lovecraftian element is present I think.
Lovecraft fans will immediately recognize "A Long Weekend at Happy Chambers" as a pastiche of (SPOILER:) a certain well-known HPL story (or two), but this reworking of familiar material is quite effectively well-executed, establishing itself as a CH masterwork & must-listen. Excellent again, Horrorbabble, & VERY much appreciated.
Hey Ian! My girl and I absolutely LOVE your channel and spend (much of 😹) our time in bed listening to your narration. MORE IMPORTANTLY, this message is to wish you an incredible belated birthday 🎉 Your channel is an oasis in a desert of mediocrity
I enjoyed the extra little electronic flourish at the end of your intro. And I am excited about this new series. I liked this story. My cat is pleased with this latest offering. Pray that she doesn't change her mind.... muahahaha. (Don't worry, she is too lazy to fly to England to go Brown Jenkin on you good folks) Best wishes to you and your family, Ian and Jennifer (and the little one too).
GREAT story. Sort of Ligotti-esque with the theme of something sinister lurking underneath something seemingly innocuous. Very unsettling. I will not soon forget this one...
I have my suspicions this is Pont1ns in Camber Sands. Each time I visited, I was struck by the lack of basic hygiene and many times, shared my chalet with many other creatures, who whilst unseen, plagued me for some time after. Most eerily, a good friend wrote her name on the dirty chalet window. When she rented the same chalet the next year, terrifyingly the name reappeared in the same place, same window. It was almost as if no one had bothered to clean them in a year.
So excited for this series! I always loved the mythos, but would sometimes find the older language and style harder to relate in many stories. Plus its always fun to see what new things authors can add or put in a new perspective
More Cthulhu Mythos? Just in time for the SPOOKY Season? The chill of the sweet and sour winds of Autumn are creeping upon us as the days slowly become shorter. The OLD ONES are unquiet in their slumber. Is it time that we will see the yellow sign?
Excellent story. I love the deliberately narrated format. And the. The paragraph about the swingset made of bones?!! Also, im quite curious about the make-up of these "pills" hes clearly binging on
I was expecting this to be some lame "mascot horror" thing when I first started it, and I was very glad to see that the story is actually much more interesting and nuanced than that. Very cool modern take on the Lovecraft mythos.
Really superb building sense of wrongness, and increasing detachment on the part of the narrator.
Very well written riff on well known tropes, and a nice touch triggering nostalgia through location to immerse the listener even further.

Yes it reminds me of the whole "liminal space" things, and the backrooms analog horror
These reads are always great when painting miniatures or doing chores. Theyre a real comfort, especially through the winter.
Excellent, fantastic story! If all the new stories are on a par with this one, I'm SERIOUSLY looking forward to them!
ditto!
Couldn't agree more.
I laughed at "The face painting ritual began". What a fantastic story! Thank you Gordon as always
I laughed at:
"I don't know who their P.R. manager is, but, they should be set on fire."
Always excited for a new Cthulhu Mythos story. Thank as awlays Ian. You are a gift.

The man, the myth, the legend....that is Horrorbabble.
I second that 👏👏👏
You never cease to amaze me bro 👍😁
Grinding in DQ11 while listening to HorrorBabble. That's how I'm spending my night! Thanks Ian~
It’s really fascinating to see the changes in the weird fiction/cosmic horror genre over the past century
I’d say it’s largely changed for the better. Lost a lot of the embarrassingly antiquated sensibilities. We’ve gotten richer stories as a result.

New mythos!! I couldn’t be happier to read that in the title 👌

Great new entry that was freaky AF! I listened to this wondering “What’s next?” for our narrator. Looking forward to new stories to come!
A fantastic story; well written; interesting, enjoyable, horrific!
Wow! A most skin-crawlingly enjoyable story! Not at all what I expected at each turn. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Very imaginative story. Leaves some unsettling food for thought. Thank you!

Like a bad salvia trip spent listening to Squeeze's "Pulling Mussels." ;)

A very unsettling and effective story I noted shades of Quartermass 2 Bleak and dispirited and very very English Well Done
That was sooo good! Thank you

On a scale of 1 to 10 just how dead is this Warren guy?
So dead you couldn't revive him with eldritch ritual and essential salts.

New mythos stories? Next hour is listening time!
I like these ones ... where they don't *have* to be Mythos related ... but it's a nice little easter egg that they are.

A great story 👏 👌
Something strikes me as hilarious about, "there was an inane puppet show- *strikethrough* there was an INSANE puppet show playing in the auditorium."
