  • In 2019, Bend Studio developed and Sony Interactive Entertainment published Days Gone, an action-adventure video game initially released for the PlayStation 4. Subsequently, a Windows version was made available in May 2021.
The game unfolds in a post-apocalyptic Oregon, set two years after a pandemic transformed a segment of humanity into aggressive zombie-like beings. Deacon St. John, a former outlaw turned drifter, learns that his presumed-dead wife, Sarah, might still be alive. Motivated by this discovery, he embarks on a quest to locate her. Days Gone employs a third-person perspective, allowing players to explore an expansive open-world environment. The gameplay includes the use of firearms, melee weapons, and improvised tools, with stealth tactics employed to fend off hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures referred to as Freakers. A central gameplay mechanic involves Deacon's motorcycle, serving as the primary mode of transportation for the player character.
Days Gone is an action-adventure game presented in the third-person perspective, unfolding in a post-apocalyptic open world. The player assumes control of Deacon St. John, a former outlaw turned drifter and bounty hunter who favors a nomadic lifestyle over settling in encampments. The game is situated two years after a devastating pandemic that wiped out a significant portion of humanity, transforming the remaining populace into rapidly evolving, mindless creatures known as "Freakers."
Various types of Freakers inhabit the world, including Swarmers, a nocturnal variant that hides during the day but becomes active at night. Players can manipulate Swarmers by attracting them toward other enemies, instigating clashes between different groups. Other adversaries include Newts, infected adolescents who opportunistically attack Deacon under specific conditions. The game also features infected wildlife, labeled as Runners and Ragers, in addition to hostile human enemies. Players must exercise caution, as overwhelming hordes of Freakers can pose significant threats, requiring strategic use of firearms, melee weapons, traps, explosives, and choke points for survival.
The game's setting unfolds in an open-world environment in the Pacific Northwest, allowing players to freely explore either on foot or using Deacon's motorcycle. The motorcycle plays a crucial role as the primary mode of transportation, requiring fuel management and occasional repairs. To enhance the motorcycle's capabilities, players must build trust with settlement camps, earning camp credits through missions, bounties, and resource trading. This trust unlocks access to new weapons, supplies, and customizable motorcycle parts.
Exploration involves resource gathering for crafting weapons and supplies, with the inclusion of side objectives such as clearing Freaker nests, rescuing hostages, and restoring power to National Emergency Response Organization (NERO) checkpoints. NERO injectors found in these checkpoints contribute to boosting Deacon's health, stamina, and focus. The game introduces fast travel, contingent on destroying all Freaker nests along the route.
Character progression occurs through experience points (XP) earned by completing missions and objectives. Players can level up, unlocking new abilities to enhance Deacon's combat and survival skills. Objectives can be approached in various ways, including stealth tactics, distraction techniques, and the use of specialized firearms equipped with noise suppressors.
To aid exploration, players can activate "survival vision" to highlight points of interest and enemy locations. Binoculars are also available for scouting enemies. The arsenal includes a diverse range of firearms, each with unique attributes, and players can utilize explosives and craft molotov cocktails for combat. However, melee weapons require regular maintenance to prevent breakage.
