I remember when this movie came out and haven't been able to forget it since. Unique story, several great one-liners, and the soundtrack is also exceptional.
Great underrated film from Clive Barker. Easily one of his best films, even better than "Hellraiser" in my opinion. Entertaining story, strong cast/actor's and a lot of gory practical effects( and unfortunately a little bit of early CGI) but not enough to ruin it. The guy from "Quantum leap" vs the military school teacher from "Malcolm in the middle"?.....it doesn't exactly sound like it'd be a great Clive Barker horror film, but it is.👍
Sucks that this movie wasn't more popular, I always thought it felt like a D&D campaign set in modern times, with mysteries to solve and NPCs to interrogate, but also with magical goons to kill. I would've loved to see an Indiana Jones-type movie series with Harry D'Amour's character.
Looking back, this would have been perfect as an X-Files type TV series. The main story arc being the Nix/Swan plot with mini-story arc's of Harry discovering clues of the former cultists committing various crimes involving Supernatural elements.
Daniel von Bargen, a brilliant actor whose career left a very positive impression upon me as a young person. Hearing of his decline in health amd subsequent passing was a very heartbreaking period for me and I sure many others. Rest in Peace. I hope you understood how much your work meant to so many people.
So many great roles. I regularly put on Malcolm In the Middle and Seinfeld as they are akin to comfort food for me. Not to mention all his great movie roles. I owned this movie on VHS at one time. It truly was heartbreaking. RIP.
I remember him for the balls to the walls performance here as Nix. So sad he died without the praise. Seems the outsiders, rebels, and quiet men get their due long after. Look at H.P. Lovecraft.
Lord of Illusions has always been one of my favorite films... Thank you for making this tribute to an underappreciated classic. And the fact that you included my favorite quote from the movie ("I was born to murder the world") was the cherry on top. God bless you fine folks
Scott Bakula is older now, but he could still totally pull off this character still today. Film Noir detectives get better with age. It'd be great if one of the streaming services developed this into a series. A sort of True Detective meets X Files meets Stranger Things. Helmed by Clive Barker and starring Scott Bakula.
I was just talking to my nephew about this movie the other night. Trying to explain the Lovecraftian horror that Nix would do to you. How he would remove the veil and let you see how the “higher powers” saw us humans.
As someone who has read a lot of Clive Barker over the years I've always loved the Harry D'Amour character. A Private Investigator specializing in the occult, magical, and metaphysical, definitely loved the fusion of genres there. Definitely could have been a main character for any number of books, movies, TV series, comics, whatever. Unfortunately this was the only version we ever got outside of the books. So much potential, but unfortunately needed to be developed more. This was almost a great movie. Solid, but could have been great. That said, Scott Bakula does okay with the script he was presented and Daniel von Bargen is freaking awesome as Nix. "You're not worthy..." .
The man is an unsung genius. Dares to smash the status quo. Which is probably the reason for lack of mainstream success. Screw the mainstream and long live the Outsiders.
Did you ever read the comic adaptation of the Great and Secret Show? At the end when D’Amour shows up he’s modeled after Scott bakula Really cool. And I agree, he was a very interesting John Constantine-sque character.
@@cicolasnage5684 I have not seen that, but definitely sounds interesting. I was honestly disappointed with D'Amour's send-off in 'The Scarlet Gospels'. That said, I would really have loved some more crossover stories from Barker (would have been 100% on-board for throwing D'Amour into any 'Great and Secret Show / Imajica' or 'Cabal' follow-up).
@@cicolasnage5684 No but I have the book. The Great and Secret Show has a weird way of finding me. I gave it away and so many months later it came back. There's a magick in the air :)
It's a shame the studio made Barker change so much of the original story, as the second half is drastically different in the film. Odd, as I've always thought it would have translated quite well into cinema. Too bad this was Barker's last film.
This movie is so underrated, it deserves more praise. I also love Erasure's cover of "Magic Moments" which plays when Harry visits the magicians' club 🎶
I saw this film in the theater with a friend. I remember it being far from a packed room. My friend thought that was a bad sign, but after viewing it, we thought it was great. It was interesting and disturbing. I last watched it with my kids last year. They thought it was disturbing too and they enjoyed it.
It too bad that this is Clive Barker's last film as a director and he would have had a brilliant career ahead of him if wasn't for the production problems on Nightbreed.
The making of this film was apparently no picnic either; and yeah it's too bad the whole thing soured Barker so much, but it's known to happen often in Hollywood. At least other good filmmakers have done his stories and carried on his legacy. Barker's books are gold mines for great horror films.
This flick has really grown on me over the years! As a teenager in the mid 90’s I thought it was ok but i didn’t appreciate the genre pairing as much as i do now. I just wanted nihilistic horror hearing Clive’s name, I liked detective stories but I didn’t want it cutting into the horror aspects. This ones an underrated gem
Yes but CADS was played more campy while this one more grounded in reality

This one was one of the first horror movies I ever saw, so is really special for me. I've watched it a couple of times in the last years, and even if it's a little uneven sometimes, I still think its prologue is one the best sequence in a horror film.
I love the line when he makes it rain, "Upi have waited for me ike sheep, but I am not you SHepard," then the sun bakes them into clay. Its perfect. I love it.
I first watched this on a bus tripping on acid with no volume available. It properly freaked me out. Without sound it just looked like one long daytime nightmare. Not as scary the second time with sound, but still really dark.
Ahh yes the wonderful world of Clive Barker's Books Of Blood. I love Lord of Illusions. Harry D'Amour was such an interesting and fun character to follow. I would've loved to see him return to the big screen because there are so many more stories that could've been done as a movie. Sadly it probably won't ever happen though. It's really unfortunate for us horror fans that the political studio landscape of Hollywood in the 90s killed Barker's passion for filmmaking. I totally get it though because as an artist Barker just wanted to create and while he did it was stifled by compromise. That's the last thing any artist wants to have to do is have someone else play God over their work. I'm grateful for the films we got from him but at the same time I'll always wish we had gotten more.
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals It came down to Clive being perceived as too "out there" for mainstream audiences. His films were not meant for big Hollywood Studios to sell tickets at the box-office. The Midnight Meat-train starring Bradley Cooper, is a great example of a Clive story made in to a quality horror movie made on a low budget.
I'll never forget watching this for the first time when I was a young teenager. Man was it a messed up movie that really stuck in my mind for a long time like Hellraiser did.
Very underrated film, and yet another fangoria got me hyped for I was not disappointed, like hellraiser and Night breed it was shocking breath of fresh air and unlike anything else I'd seen. Unfortunately I've not seen it for over 10years but will try find it after this reminder I may even still have my vhs copy boxed up somewhere I always wished barker had made the great and secret show into a movie
I loved Lord of Illusions but cant find it in it's complete form. The part where the cult is living all across the country years later is missing. They get a phone call, then kill their families and head back to the desert to rejoin Nix. Without this part, they suddenly are back with one lady wearing a kitty shirt. Major continuity mistake. I found that scene on You Tube, but it belongs back in the movie. I loved Scott Bakula in this movie. I got to meet Clive Barker at a book signing. He seems so nice, it's hard to realize his head is full of horror.
I should say I think Clive isn’t a great director imo. He’s a great producer and writer bc he thinks up amazing set pieces and situations. Also the cgi is hard to ignore.
I was a young man when I went to see this ina theater with my brother and best friend. I was like 18-19 prolly not even 20 I think and I could not sleep with out having a light on in the room.
i cant believe the homecoming scene was cut from theatrical. it is one of the most disturbing scenes in all of horror. it was like a bunch of children putting away their toys because daddy was coming home. the imagery has always stuck with me. great movie very underrated.
I didn't understand this when it came out unfortunately. Due to this fact I never appreciated this great film for what it was until almost 20 years later. It truly is a great film that more people should watch if they haven't already.

I'm always found it interesting that studios or like oh 115 minutes that's way too long for people to sit. Yet I used to go to plays both in high school and college that run for 3 and 4 hours do movie studios really think that little of the audience that they're unable to sit and enjoy a movie that is any longer than an hour and a half?? And there are some movies out there that have been cut down like that that really could have benefited from that extra 15-20 minutes
Bacula’s character was really written awkwardly; he always seemed like both an observer, and an uninvited guest to events that were way out of his league to be able to resolve. Daniel Von Bargen’s Nix was more like what if Jesus had embraced the devil when he was tempted by him, and used his powers for evil.
I thought it was actually Barker's best, even with studio F'ery . Hellraiser of course will always be more iconic with the introduction to Barker's unique demonic visions, but this was a better all around film for me.
Laughing at the sex scene being taken out. What were people expecting from a Clive Barker film? If anyone has ever read his books, they are pretty explicit. And Hellraiser is sexual in nature
This could be readapted as TV Series. That would be exciting as a fan of the movie. But since Bakula is now too old, who do you think should replace him as Harry?

God I love this film. One of the best 90's horror flick in my oppinion. It has such a great atmosphere, lore and characters/performances!

Kevin J O Connor seems to be easily hypnotized by spooky magical men.
He's got a passive gay thing there, even if he doesn't know it.

It was great fun working on the makeup effects too. I did a little painting and finishing work on some of the puppets. Decades ago! 😳
I need to watch this movie sometime. Like many things I’ve worked on, I’ve never watched it.
Checked your IMDB, you worked on some good films there.
Do you have a good collection of movie props you've kept over the years?

It's a shame it wasn't a big hit as it's quite a decent movie. Very underrated and one of my fave 90's horror films.

My absolute favorite Barker flick. Nix is one scary mofo. Plus, I dig the mashup of cult film, magic, cosmic horror, and neo-noir.
I'd love to see a theatrical release of The Scarlett Gospels but I'm convinced they would fuck it up.
