  • Naomi Klein is an academic and author of Doppelganger, A Trip Into the Mirror World, which dives into the industry behind conspiracy theory and right-wing propaganda in the internet age.
She swung by JOE Towers this week to speak about the book, the psychology of conspiracy theorists and how Russell Brand and Donald Trump enjoy unequivocal support from those fully immersed in the "mirror world".

@@trevfindley5704 I am saying that if you are afraid to consider conspiracy as a theory to explain events in current affairs, politics and big business - afraid because the term 'conspiracy theory' has been weaponized as a smear - then you are unlikely to ever detect conpiracy and hold people to account for it.
In current affairs, politics, big buainess - anything where the stakes are high - conspiracy always has been and always will be rife.
Engage your brain - who has a vested interest in conditioning the public to recoil in horror at the thought of being labelled a 'conspiracy theorist'.
Conspiracy theorists are simply people that look at what is going on in the world, consider historical events etc and theorize about the likelihood of conspiracy being behind what we're seeing. And the reality is - history shows us that conspiracy is almost always going to be behind these things - to some degree or another.
These potential conspiracy's are never investigated because the media engages in a massive smear campaign to ridicule the people saying - there's reason to believe something illegal happening here; we should look into it.

This book is going to be my christmas read this year. I'm quite ashamed to admit I did get the Naomi streams crossed for a bit myself, never having read either author directly at their source but more piecemeal through their various other media work. This is a very troubling phenomena to me, one that has really gained a head of steam since the pandemic. It's going to be fascinating to see how Naomi Klein tackles it both from a more narrow personal perspective and in the more broad intellectual terms she's known for. I'll just say this very subjective and fanciful thing - there's a righteous tone we can hear sometimes, and I believe Naomi Klein transmits it very cleanly. I cannot imagine her falling off any lofty perch. My keen sense is that she is a safe pair of hands, a mind we can tap into and be better for it.

    • @worldadventuretravel

A better question is why all the conspiracies turn out to be spoilers. It's sad to see Klein discrediting herself this way. She's otherwise done great work, but has obviously been co-opted by counterrevolutionaries like many others. I guess talking openly about neoliberalism was okay but the global transition to programmable digital currencies for surveillance purposes-- which is happening already-- was the line that she was ready to take money over to shut up anyone talking about this and related events as "conspiracy theorists." I'm glad I got pirated copies of her previous books instead of giving her my money.

@@hastekulvaati9681 A scene from Cronenberg's adaptation of 'Naked Lunch' has always stuck with me, where Kerouac and Ginsberg are discussing how one should approach writing with Kerouac concluding that it's best to keep the first thing that comes to mind so as to not dilute the "beauty" of spontaneous, unfettered emotion or thought; whereas Ginsberg surmises that revising a word 100+ times allows him to craft something closer to the truth by using reflection, and they turn to Burroughs to ask his opinion, who answers: "Exterminate all rational thought".
In reality, we can't make a compact that is absolute with anyone or even with ourselves about anything, just as there is no such thing as good and evil, right and wrong, everything is a sea of grey and we're just swimming through it during our short time here like goldfish staring out of the fishbowl of existence occasionally getting a glimpse of something true to us, then forgetting it, or having it augment or change due to individual or societal pressures and circumstance. I suppose a psychopath is only slightly freer because they don't have the ability to feel empathy or fear and their only drive is to crush and deceive and, at all costs, avoid anyone seeing through their diaphenous social camouflage, so they're not getting bogged down by all the thought baggage.
I think a more apt aphorism for understanding the human condition when you're not psychopathic is: "Don't trust anyone, not even yourself." Also, a lot of the anxiety caused by existing can be alleviated by committing oneself to a meaningful vocation as Wilhelm Reich argued in 'Die Funktion des Orgasmus'.

I think after a lifetime of listening to politicians spouting this or that, ai have decided that I just want fairness. I want them to do what is right and what is fair. I want them to listen to experts and carry out strategies that will help people and the world. It is not easy to trust anyone who wants to be in power as they all seem to have an agenda of their own. The conversation around 'People should just listen to experts' is incredibly ignorant and shows a lack of understanding of the quality of evidence. @@ornatus9616 you've not really explained in your comment why it's 'incredibly ignorant' to want to listen to experts.
We're living in a world of imperfect solutions. OP saying that we should listen to experts more than politicians who are frequently sociopaths that grab power by telling people whatever they want to hear, often with little reference to objective reality, doesn't seem all that unreasonable.
Clearly it's not something that would be easy to implement in a fair way, but it seems like a bit of an over reaction to dismiss it as 'incredibly ignorant'.
      Could you elaborate further please?

    • @ornatus9616
      @ornatus9616 8 месяцев назад +15

@@trevfindley5704 Maybe I overstated my opinion. Sociopaths aren't confined to politics; they can be found in every walk of life. Elevating a scientist's opinion above everybody else is ignorant because it is just one way of understanding the world around us, and it has its limitations. One issue can be a narrow perspective, as it focuses on empirical evidence and observable phenomena. While this approach is valuable for understanding some aspects of the world, it doesn't encompass all aspects of the human experience, such as ethics, emotions, and personal beliefs. Ignoring these dimensions can lead to a narrow and incomplete understanding of complex issues. There are other reasons, like bias and subjectivity, because scientists are just people, and people have beliefs that can influence their work. Without these considerations, you can't make well-informed decisions and solve complex issues, and it can hinder the development of holistic solutions.

I'm 60 years old. It's only recently that I've realized that democracy has always been a bit of a sham. An 'illusion' to keep the workforce compliant.
It was always fairly safe to give people a vote - it was always a bit of a Hobson's choice, and the media (called the 'free press' but actually easily controled by the establishment) could fairly reliably control how people voted. Too much interest in 'lose cannons' such as Farage, Corbyn and the media could easily demonize them.
Then Brexit happened - the unthinkable. The people were given the vote on the understanding that the media could make sure they voted 'the right way' - but they voted the 'wrong' way.
What to do? Deliver Brexit (which the establishment didn't want to do at any cost), or allow the illusion of democracy to shatter.
As you say - is it a good thing? I think we're now seeing the world for what it is. But does that knowledge change anything? I would say not - those that 'think the wrong way' are demonized...criminalized even. Those that say the wrong things are deplatformed.
I think people had more levers when most of us believed the lie - they had a vested interest in keeping the illusion alive. Now that most realize the truth - there's less need for them to put up a pretence.
So where does that leave us? Facing full blown authoritarianism? Not much point in knowing the truth (or rather having more information) if you're powerless to use it to make life better for your children.

I feel really sad for the ones who get drawn into all of this "conspiracy nonsense" It's like gaslighting on a massive scale & people literally get lost to it. I had a friend who started to get sucked in during Covid. I hate to admit it, but we're no longer friends. Her whole way of thinking became so defensive, difficult & irrational that it was difficult to hold a conversation with her. She isolated herself & that was it. She was gone. I think the hardest part about people who believe in all of this is that they're victims of manipulation & exploitation but they call anyone & everyone who try to help them as "sheep" when it's them who are the sheep. It's such a bizarre situation & very tragic for the friends & families who witness people getting trapped in it.

I think we have the same friend. One of mine friends got sucked into the anti-vaccine conspiracy. Then it was the anti-press conspiracy. Now, she's a hardcore defender of Brand and won't read or watch anything he doesn't put on his channel. She absolutely cannot stop trying to recruit anyone who doesn't agree 100 per cent with her. I held onto her for as long as I could endure it but, now, I, too, have had to stop talking to her because these conspiracies are all she wants to discuss. It's like it took over her life! At least with the QAnon, there was a date (Inaugeration day) when it ended and people had to confront reality. But these newer conspiracies just keep going and going...

Because There's a direct link between Scientology, Trump, and the techniques used by the right wing echosphere, who also tie to NXIVM (Elon promoted it) Epstein (Trump's bff for20+ years) and Saville, (who Brand idolised) and the Monarchy who (Shapiro and Piers Morgan defends). Tate dated Peterson's daughter and Elon went to the same Jesuit University as Trump, and Epstein hooked up Elon's brother, just like he did for Trump.
Trump's lawyer Alan Dershowitz said he was introduced to Epstein by Lynn de Forrester Rosschild.
Scientology is training these people in the tactics of brainwashing, basically what MK Ultra became, and probably run by the CIA, and Opus Dei, which is basically the same thing. Their principle strategy is Gaslighting.
Gaslighting, aka Grooming. Accusation in a mirror (AiM), mirror politics, mirror propaganda, mirror image propaganda, is a hate-speech incitement technique where one falsely attributes to one's adversaries the intentions that one has for oneself and/or the actions that one is in the process of enacting. It was used in Rwanda, Guatemala, Brazil, and Burma, each having ties to Mossad.
Trump, Barr, Bannon, Cippolone, Gore, Guiliani, Leo, Alito, Thomas, and Barrett are all Opus Dei. Trump trained alongside Epstein and Roger Stone under Roy Cohn, who used kids to blackmail politicians on behalf of Mossad. Cohn trained under Meyer Lansky, who trained under Hoover. Robert Mercer and Rupert Murdoch are both Knights of Malta.
Saville, Bezos, Gates, Koch, Rogan, Walsh, Crowder, Kirk, Fuentes, Dore, Knowles, Kulinksi, Ball, Iverson, Icke, Woods, Watson, Cernovich, Abbott, Jones, Robinson, Woods, Pool, Rubin, Peterson, Posobeic, Duke, Molyneux, Yilanopouse, Gionet, Richardson, Tillerson, Greene, Manaforte, Flynn, Ducey, Acosta, Attwood, Stone, Pence, Desantis, Meadows, Trump, Eastman, Black, Kerik, Melania, Barr, Bannon, Hawley, Gingrich, Abrams, Comey, Cuomo, Kerry, Abrams, Gore, Spencer, Blassio, Pompeo, Bolton, McCarthy, Nugent, Cruz, Rubio, Gaetz, Santos, Tucker, Gutfield, O'Reilly, Beck, Scarborough, Devos, Kasich, Mercer, Murdoch, Rosschild, Ingram, Kelly, Lake, Conway, Coulter, Huckabee, McEnany, Hannity, Spicer, Christie, Prager, Maher, Colbert, Corbett, Hayes, Biden, Harris, Fauci, Pelosi, Menendez, Pirro, Manchin, Cooper, Maddow, AOC, Newsom, Uyger, Dawkins, Hitchens, Hancock, Sitchin, Ventura, Morgan, Cowell, Farage, Johnson, May, Merkel, Blair, Cameron, Brown, Blair, Mogg, Benjamin, Trudeau, Putin, Bolsanaro, Stalin, Lenin, Tito, Trotsky, Hitler.
Special mentions (adjucants): Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Miller, Watters, Greenwad, Blumenthal, Maté, Camp, Brand, Loomer, Shapiro, Thatcher, Bush, Obama, Merkel, Greer, Summers, Silverstein, Adelson. Greenblatt. Wexner. Also Hindu Nationalists Ramaswamy, Tulsi, Haley, Hirsi, DeSouza, Modi etc.
Edward Snowden worked for Pentagon Comptroller Dov Zakheim and was bought to us by Glen Greenwald, who now rubs shoulders with Jesuit Agent Provocateurs Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan, whose mutual friend with Steven Crowder Brian Callen is the founder of Diligence, a spook Contractor to the CIA.
Julian Assange helped Roger Stone and the Trump Campaign in 2016, being the first to suggest challenging the outcome if he lost, and asking to be made the Australian ambassador to the US. Margeret Sunbyrne, the head of the Sun Worship Cult he was raised in was also protected by the CIA in the Australian Supreme Court, on grounds of "National Security" Trump paints himself Orange to represent Apollo.
Aleister Crowley inspired NXIvM and Manson, and was a master of mind control, his Protege L Ron Hubbard was the founder of Scientology, which uses the same mind control tactics displayed in right wing media.
They were also instrumental in Trump's conception as the Moon Child, born on a Super Wolf Blood Moon on June 14 700 days before the founding of Israel, who he gave sovereignty over the Golan heights on its 70th anniversary, and was inaugurated aged 70 years 7 months and 7 days old. June 14 is the birthday of Osiris, Known as the Day of the Pharoah.
Scientology uses the same tricks as Religion and Freemasonry, including isolation through strange acts (rituals/hazing) Gaslighting and intimadation, these can also be seen in right wing propaganda. Peterson's hero's journey comes from the transit of the moon through the zodiac, which is why they're called months.
      Blame the victim:
The strategy is to make the aggressor's feelings the goalposts, everything is oriented around their needs and approval; a war of attrition using subjective language and logical fallacies such as incredulity, which amounts to disbelief, and acting as if this belief is something the victim is responsible for.
"Look what you made me do"
*In the context of child sexual abuse (CSA) the **_gaslighting_** is often used to convince the victim all the abusive behaviours are fine, normal and an expression of “love” (for eg Patriotism, Christianity, Service). It is used to ensure the victim doesn’t speak out about it and doesn’t fight back. It can also be used in concert with other **_grooming_** tactics like fear and isolation. Ultimately the aim is to legitimise a worldview that is detached from reality, and therefore arbitrary. Now they can call evil good and good evil*
*>>Trivializing:* *The victim’s feels are made to feel like they don’t matter, are **_unfounded_** or they are weak for thinking so.* (woke/ lib/ groomer/ infidel etc)
*>>Countering: This is quintessential gaslighting.* *They **_directly counter the memories and perceptions of the victim._*
*>>Repetitive Questions: The abusive partner makes the victim doubt what they think or feel by asking the same question multiple times.* by doing so they preemptively assume the role of an authority by proxy.
*>>Diverting: The abuser diverts the subject and puts the blame into outside circumstances.*
*>>No true Scotsman, or appeal to purity* is an informal fallacy in which one attempts to *protect their generalized statement from a falsifying counterexample* by trying to _exclude the counterexample_ improperly.
This is the Core of White Supremacist ideology.
*"What Others Say" (Appeal to populism)*
The abuser tells the victim what other people "think" about the victim, the abuser and/or the situation on whole. Also known as an appeal to populism, the basis of Authoritarian Communism, and Cults, "if many believe it then it must be true" (whether people actually agree with the position and whether it is true or not). Bolshevism itself means "the Majority" and is no different to Fascist appeals to a "Moral Majority" Patriotism is a form of Authoritarian Communism.
Other than direct contradiction and disbelief other strategies for Gaslighting include Begging the Question, and the use of Strawman arguments; refuting a reframed argument *different from the one actually under discussion* while not recognizing or acknowledging the distinction.
Through the exercise of overwhelming a subject with countless contradicting premises and subjective terms a game of Pigeon Chess is played to deter criticism and break down a person's defences, until they no longer trust their own feelings, and rely solely on an outside source for direction. This is clearly demonstrated in the Maga cult, and is repeated in the convoluted dogma and magical thinking of Evangelism, New Age Spirituality, Ancient Aliens, and Graham Hancock. Always alluding to a secret to be revealed, but always in vague nebulous terms and undefined benefits of a far away place with no means to verify one way or the other.
      "Trust me bro"
Effectively they all play the same role of an Enlightened Guru with deep understanding of life matters who can solve all your problems. It's likely no coincidence Reagan emptied the mental health services in the US, over half of those in Jail and living on the streets have undiagnosed ADHD.
Auyawasca and Psychotropics are also a staple in brainwashing, as is telling the target they've been brainwashed and that the Guru has the cure, right wing propaganda uses this language heavily by flipping the script and arguing they are the victims, that they're the ones being silenced and cancelled, that they oppose child abuse while also defending it, that the deep State is out to get them, when they're the Deep State and always have been.
Aleister Crowley was a big advocate of using Psychotropics to brainwash, just like the CIA, Opus Dei and MK Ultra.
Brand and Trump both use hand waving and holding them outspread in a "settle" gesture called pacing. They can also stare at an opponent, "asserting dominance" to put the target on the back foot and unsure how to respond. Peterson does this a lot, along with rapid fire speech, and using an insulting or demanding tone. By using these tactics as well as loaded language (Newspeak) and inference (plausible deniability) only to move the goalposts and reframe when challenged.
Trump's Mentor Roy Cohn admitted to using kids to blackmail politicians on behalf of israel, and trained under him alongside Epstein and Roger Stone. Trump's Jesuit mentor was Norman Vincent Peale, a 33rd degree Master Freemason. He was born June 14 during a Super Wolf Blood Moon to Fred Christ and Mary McKleod, he keeps a book of Hitler's speeches called _My New Order_ and uses it verbatim at his rallies. The Von Drumph family come from the same place as Hitler, Vienna Bavaria, Capital of the Holy Roman Empire. He paints himself Orange to represent Apollo; the Dawnbringer of Aleister Crowley's Golden Dawn. Jamal Kashoggi's Mossad brother Adnan sold Trump a Superyacht for Russian Roman Abromavich, who was also paying Boris and Farage for Brexit. Most of israel's govt are non religious Russians.

Now, I’m a fan of JOE content - and Naomi Klein’s ‘The Shock Doctrine’ realigned the way I viewed the world; I’m a great admirer of her commentary. So I saw this, and was interested in her take on the Russell Brand... Issue let’s call it. And of course, JOE comes across as this warm, non-corporate (it isn’t, read to the end), touchy-feely, left-wing online news channel. And Oli Dugmore, bless him, with his unbranded casual clothing and that kind of deferential, non-threatening, just-chilling-with-my-uni-flatmates image - he’s like a young-intellectual-activist-woman’s Dermot O’Leary isn’t he? And I’m not knocking him.. But WTF was that RUclips clickbait interview all about!? Spoiler alert: THE INTERVIEW IS NOT ABOUT RUSSELL BRAND INDULGING CONSPIRACY CULTURE. In fact, the first 40 seconds of the video front-loads literally everything Klein has to say about Brand throughout the whole interview. I think she only mentions his name once. No, this is Klein talking about her book. So why the clickbait headline?
When this pops up on RUclips, you see a big main image with Ms. Klein on the right of the screen, and on the left, underneath the big heading - “THIS IS A MASSIVE INDUSTRY” - you’ve got a carefully selected shot of Russell Brand looking like some kind of cult magician about to wave a Jedi spell over his followers. The title of the video is ‘How Russell Brand indulges conspiracy culture’ - a pretty self-proclaiming title - but then, in the 53 minutes and 6 seconds of content, Ms. Klein never brings him up. In fact, she doesn't even mention him until prompted to after 35 minutes when he’s awkwardly and erroneously segued in as “one of [Klein’s] doppelganger’s fellow travellers who also inhabits this mirror world ... at one point like Wolf, darling of the left and mainstream media. Now he faces very, very serious accusations of rape and sexual assault”. Eh!? How does that make Brand and Wolf similar? Oli forges ahead (35 minutes in - he’s got to get this interview to match the heading somehow) - “let’s talk about him” he insists. “Must we” Klein replies. It sounds like a Freudian slip indicating that she doesn’t really know that much about Brand, doesn’t really care about who he is, and would prefer to talk about her new book and the people that she does know about - and indeed spends most of the interview talking about - Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and her ‘doppleganger’ Naomi Wolf. But Oli has been briefed (I assume) so he ploughs on with a couple of leading and positioning adjuncts to his questions as to whether Brand is a conspiracy theory “grifter”. But this is a false start, because immediately Klein shifts the discussion to Trump... hahaha!!! It’s sooooo obvious that she really does not want to talk about Russell Brand, but Oli has a job to do...
There’s another five minutes of Naomi Klein NOT talking about Russell Brand before Oli desperately shoehorn’s him into the discussion again - this time aligning him with Donald Trump (Really! That’s stretching it Oli mate). It doesn’t work, so he tries again a few minutes later, this time pegging him onto an association with Naomi Wolf - eventually Klein bites. So after almost 45 minutes of a 53 minute video interview entitled ‘How Russell Brand indulges conspiracy culture’, Naomi Klein tenuously references him in the topic of discussion - which is basically that entire 40 seconds you saw at the start of the interview.
Throughout this interview, Russell Brand’s name is mentioned about half a dozen times, and I think Naomi Klein utters it once. So why the big Brand headline? Why the big push to tar Brand as a conspiracy theorist “grifter”? The irony is that this interview is all about conspiracy theories, then you have an entire interview produced by a branch of a media outlet (one of Brand's typical targets is the 'mainstream' media) that has contrived to, yet woefully failed, to achieve its title’s objective of proving ‘How Russell Brand indulges conspiracy culture’. Well, let’s take a look at the touchy, feeling, lefty, independent-looking JoePolitics to get some context about where it lies in the media landscape.
PoliticsJoe is part of the Joe Media Group, which is a subsidiary of Greencastle Media Group and Greencastle Capital (based in Dublin), which are in turn subsidiaries of Linton Capital LLP, a UK investment firm based in Richmond Mews in a swanky part of West London. Both are owned and controlled by ex-rugby player David Sefton, a clever fellow who very likely rubbed shoulders with the elites of parliament whilst studying at Oxford no less.
Linton Capital is "a private equity firm based in London, United Kingdom. The firm prefers to invest through means of buyouts and acquisitions ... in the energy, technology, and media sectors” - doesn't sound so wokey, lefty, touchy-feely does it?
Greencastle Media Group has been established specifically to invest in digital and social media brands, technology and publishers, and is owned and managed by both David Sefton and Paul O’Donohoe. On LinkedIn their overview states that they ‘act as a conduit - connecting brands to our highly engaged communities that span men’s lifestyle, politics, culture, women’s lifestyle, sport and entertainment. Elevating brand engagement through original, insight driven solutions that form authentic affiliations. Using our centralised business functions, we work with brands from strategy through to creative delivery, cutting through the noise to elevate content and unleash the power of your brand by turning trends into commercial success.’ I have no truck with capitalism in general, but again, that doesn't really align with the touchy-feely lefty ideology of Joe.
In short, Joe Media is worth millions (their IPO in 2022 was valued at €25 million). So, as you take in their content and feel that it’s all touchy feely and aligned with lefty socialist values, bear in mind what the underpinning economic foundations of the channel really are and maintain an acute awareness of any bias and positioning, and any motivation for such.

    • @elizabethking4589
      @elizabethking4589 8 месяцев назад +8

Thank you for this; I wonder how much Klein is worth? In her disdain for any opposing narratives, Klein is in danger of becoming all that she criticises: a totalitarian dictator, who favours her 'in-group' and mocks her out-group: anyone that disagrees with her, including nature, personal choice, freedom of speech, and bodily autonomy. There was a moment where she gave an example of a nature loving yogi, that sounded questionable. In her example, Klein claimed that the yogi chose to trust in her immune system, rather than f@rma, and allegedly said that those with weak immune systems should dye. Not only does this sound off key (like BS); but even if it were true, how can anyone base their premise on one person's response, to her husbands door to door campaign?
This whole left and right political debate is slowly morphing into a parody. It's like favouring your left hemisphere over your right hemisphere, or favouring your right hand over your left. We need both. Schrödinger's cat and our own self importance, aside, nature can function pretty well without our input and we would do well to learn a thing or two, by following Her example.
There are so many elements about life that we do not and cannot understand, no matter how many models and theories we propose. Or how many test tubes we propagate with life. We are the only species that thinks we can do better than the miracle of life, and that damaging nature is progress, but damaging buildings is vandalism.
We take it upon ourselves to interfere, from GMO's to sterilising animals, and sterilising ourselves. The same people who criticise Russell Brand for dating a sixteen year old (bare in mind that the legal age in the uk is 16), will also tell you that a four year can decide to begin the journey of identity change by taking puberty blockers, and self sterilisation (self mutilation). This is the first time in life where you cannot question political narratives, and in so doing, you can be silenced, lose your financial means, ridiculed and ostracised. What has happened to innocent until proven guilty? Or to our fundamental human rights? Or to having our own opinion on something; when did it become a crime to disagree? You have no right to scapegoat someone because they have erred from the norm. What is the norm today, will be not be the norm tomorrow.

I had to do a family visit to Totnes in the 1990s and I have to say that it was, even then, an uneasy mix of lefties (of whom I am one) and the adherents of superstitious belief systems that were fuelled by crop circles and crystals. My opinion is that neo-liberalism is not providing answers because we are witnessing the death of religion in western societies and there are, regrettably, a great many magical thinkers who have adopted quasi religious, cultish belief systems to replace traditional religions. Our education system is failing to address this problem by raising the quality of scientific knowledge across a wide enough social demographic. Too many poor people are not receiving the quality of education that is required in the modern world. And I wish people like Naomi Klein would not apologise for their learning and intelligence by describing their work as 'nerdy'.

    • @CC3GROUNDZERO
      @CC3GROUNDZERO 8 месяцев назад +5

I found it very interesting that Naomi Klein picked up on those same trends that I've been observing in my immediate social surroundings. What you mentioned, there are many magical thinkers. These are not people who subscribe to any political ideology. To the contrary: many of them don't even vote. They don't have any political ideology, which defaults to being on board with neoliberalism. And many of them never read any books, some don't even watch movies. And they emphasize "healthy living" A LOT, eating raw vegetables all the time.
I understand it as a type of "apolitical" (i.e. politically centrist) anti-intellectualism that I've come to hate so much in people. I actually have a bigger problem with those types of people than with overtly political ideologues who are on the opposite end of the political spectrum from me; because while those latter people are my political enemies, at least I see eye to eye with them as far as a fundamental sense for the importance of political action goes. Even a MAGA-hat is in that limited sense closer to me than those apolitical, anti-intellectual drifters.

Were they always a bit on the mental side and just hid it well, was it always about being on the most popular and lucrative side of issues and they were always grifting, or did something just happen to them to cause some sort of mental break with reality? Or is it a combination of these?

...on Naomi's the town of Totnes comment and it's shift to the right, it's a multifaceted thing that has happened over time, a great deal of it sources from the loss of the local Art School in Dartington i.e. the loss of those students and what they brought to the town, another influential force is the influx of (mostly independently wealthy but wanting to be part of the hippy lifestyle image) newcomers bringing different ideas with them, pulling it away from where it once was (not a bad thing necessarily, but isn't working quite as well as it could), and another is the inherent weakness in the naturally 'open to ideas' nature of a community being preyed upon by some quite organised and extreme people. The left leaning and liberal community is still there, it just can't cope with the wave of utter drivel being thrown at it nonstop, and these new right-leaning elements (often espousing left leaning ideas tinged with something more scary) can be quite aggressive, which Totnesians have a hard time coping with. Most came to Totnes to get away from that, and it's sad to see the town change in the way it has.
Totnes is probably the last truly left/liberal stronghold in the South West of the UK, it makes sense that there is a concerted effort by the right to take it down.

Russell Brand was ousted from the small pond of British Film, TV, Theatre and Radio.
Producers and media executives could no longer control or appease the women in the industry,
from Brands relentless and remorseless sex addiction.
He ‘escaped to the country’ …and started up a podcast to emulate Joe Rogan.
He needed counselling for his sex addiction and so paid for,
the most renowned gurus ( grifting around the globe ) by interviewing them,
offering up snippets on RUclips, then trying to coax viewers into seeing more content behind a paywall.
This was a huge failure... people don't want to pay for content.
So he tilted or pivoted over to more Rogan-esque material. This was an immediate hit.
That's when the 'audience capture' phenomena happened.
He was caught into producing only counterculture material.
He did this by hiring a team to trawl though websites,
US left-leaning media news, but mostly sub-stack articles… regurgitating the material,
online for an avid ‘ever-growing’ fanbase.
( Hello my six million awakening wonders! )
He’s now stuck ( proverbially ) between a rock and hard place.
He wants to go back into the mainstream media world.
He thought he might be able to come back on his own terms… if he became,
    a big enough internet phenomenon.
But this latest attack has reminded those in the ( UK ) entertainment industry,
that he’s too much of a risk. He can now only go state-side and hope a US rightwing company,
will offer him a large enough contract.
That, or try to attain his original goal of becoming ‘Joe Rogan famous’ on his own merits.

Except There's a direct link between Scientology, Trump, and the techniques used by the right wing echosphere, who also tie to NXIVM (Elon promoted it) Epstein (Trump's bff for20+ years) and Saville, (who Brand idolised) and the Monarchy who (Shapiro and Piers Morgan defends).

Greenblatt.
I hadn't been paying much attention to Russell Brand until this current controversy, because I felt he'd disappeared down the rabbit hole of conspiracy culture.
But just over the last week since following his recent output, I'm increasingly impressed with his insights, and also that he backs up what he's saying with evidence. I actually think his views of what is needed to bring about change are similar to what Naomi is advocating - people feeling connected by a common humanity and coming together to form a grass roots coalition of decentralised power, that transcends these divisions of left versus right.
I also think it's fair comment to say he's indulging conspiracy culture with his use of emotive language and framing of his material, but I think that's in order to engage with the people who have been drawn into that world, to encourage them to question things, and also expose the way that capitalism functions, which Naomi was talking about.
I agreed with what she says that these kind of influencers are filling a void, but I feel in Russell Brand's case there is a genuine empathy, because of his own struggles, and a humanitarian vision, that is lacking in a mainstream media controlled by commercial and vested interests.

Yes, his general ideas are reasonable. He wants to take sponsorship out of politics and reduce the influence of large companies on government policies. @@django3422 No because I'm not a customer and he isn't selling anything, although he has asked for financial support IF people are able to contribute. I don't know what his existing costs and overheads are, but he will definitely be facing some hefty legal bills. I think he should be more transparent about why he needs financial support.
But I guess it's down to what you believe his motives are. I personally think he genuinely wants to make a difference. If he was only in it for the money he could have stayed with Katy Perry in Hollywood, and remained part of the MSM machine, providing entertainment and not rocking the boat with any 'inconvenient truths'. And would he be facing these kind of allegations if he had done so? I doubt it. The devil looks after his own, as they say.
And where does this belief that people are only motivated by money comes from? As far as I'm concerned that is part of the indoctrination of Capitalism and Neo-Liberalism, where everyone and everything is reduced to a commodity. And that includes US military interventions in other countries, supposedly in the name of freedom and democracy, but which are actually a highly profitable money making venture for the Military Industrial Complex that President Eisenhower warned about back in 1961.
That is what Russell Brand is exposing, supported by evidence. And that along with calling out big pharma and the mainstream media, is certainly enough for various vested interests to want him silenced.
I agree with Naomi Kline though that there is a failure on the part of the mainstream media to address these issues, and also the fact they don't simply vindicates what he is claiming about the whole of the mainstream media having lost all independence having mutated into nothing more than a mouthpiece for a global establishment.

I have read a few of his books (I have had a lifelong substance use disorder) and in at least two of his books, he relentlessly talks about how he "used" to be a sex addict. And people are accusing him of behaviour *from that point in time* forward.
Someone who wrote in detail about how much sex he had and what kind of sex etc and we are shocked that said person could be a sexual offender???
For real. It would be like if people finally pointed out that Anthony Kiedis admitted he committed statutory rape *in his autobiography* and he got cancelled for that.

You can find a direct link between Scientology, Trump, and the techniques used by the right wing echosphere, who also tie to NXIVM (Elon promoted it) Epstein (Trump's bff for20+ years) and Saville, (who Brand idolised) and the Monarchy who (Shapiro and Piers Morgan defends).
