    Yay. I have Lightfast, Coloursoft, Chromaflow, Drawing, Procolour, Inktense and Artists. LOVE them all. I was excited to see quite a few Lightfast, Procolour, Artists and Inktense colours in the extra 78. I love the Derwent palettes. To ME, Lightfast, Coloursoft, Chromaflow and Drawing all feel soft. Contrary to what you said about soft pencils, I have had no problem with Derwent soft pencils breaking. And I use them almost everyday, sharpen with hand crank or electric helical blade sharpeners. Prismacolor on the other hand break all the time … not because they are soft but because the build quality is rubbish. That is the cores are off centre and casings split. I stopped using Prisma (have 150 set) because they make me mad. Too many I can’t use at all. Prismacolor have an undeserved cult following. If those people aren’t as silly as they seem for defending a rubbish quality product, Derwent should snap up many, many more customers. Deservedly so. Beautiful, beautiful, English-made, quality pencils. They just feel beautiful in your hand ❤

      I love Derwent and have all the same sets as you. I agree with you about the Prismacolors...rubbish aren't they? I have a 48 set and they are virtually unusable so won't be buying anymore, especially as they are so expensive in the UK. I did have some issues with some of my Chromoflow 'shredding' in various pencil sharpeners. I complained to Derwent and they sent me replacement pencils and their hand crank sharpener for free! So their customer service is excellent.

      It’s a shame about the Prismas. I have some from high school and all of them are perfectly centered and not as ‘smushy’ as they are today. I did buy a new set several years ago and I decided to keep them all at factory length with a T’GAAL handheld sharpener on the 2 setting. It keeps the exposed core short enough that I’ve had no breakage but you do have to sharpen more frequently. Maybe this could help you find a use for them so you don’t look at them and growl. 😂💚

    There it is the review of the 150 set, well done! I've got the 72 set and also the 72 Coloursoft and I still think that the Chromaflow is inferior in pigments and in build quality. Can't escape the feeling that optical brighteners are used in the Chromaflow pencils, while Coloursoft has a more pure pigment. When comparing Prismacolor Premier directly to both Chromaflow and Coloursoft, the Coloursoft is definitely the best alternative in my opinion. Chromaflow is great, but Coloursoft layers better and while very soft, I get a lot more details with them when sharpened. I'm still debating to get the 150 set, but I would prefer a larger set of Coloursoft. They're still my favorites from Derwent together with the muted Drawing colored pencils.
    As for the price, the price at the Derwent Store is ridiclous, sorry to say so. That's more than an imported Prismacolor Premier 150 set. If you want to compete, but you don't quite get there, you definitely don't price your product above the competition.

    • @raggedyroad
      @raggedyroad 4 месяца назад +5

      I hear you on the pricing. I love Derwent but think all of their products are overpriced. So far I have only purchased their unique lines, Inktense pencils/blocks/pans, Graphitint pencils & Drawing pencil 24 set....

    • @artbybenjamin
      @artbybenjamin 4 месяца назад

      @@raggedyroad Won't argue with that. I only buy their products when they're on sale or second hand. Over here we have a huge second hand online platform and I got 2 wooden boxes with 72 Coloursoft for less than one new one. One set wasn't used, the other one hardly.
      Chromaflow and Inktense I bought in a sale on Amazon. Some lightning deal. Very good prices.
      I've also got the Graphitint pencils & Drawing pencil 24 set, bought them second hand from someone who only made swatches with them and didn't like the colors at all.
      But new and full price, they're stuff is a fortune, way more than it should be.

      Interesting to hear your comparison with these & the Coloursoft. 🤔 I've found the Coloursofts to be really patchy and thus hard to blend/layer. And the lightfastness situation is abysmal. But I'd love to use them in combination with other pencils (f.ex. they are wonderful to use with Luminance) if I could trust their ratings...

    Thanks for sharing this Harry. I've been waiting for Derwent to become more competitive with larger sets. I do wish they would increase the Drawing Set to at least 72. I will be purchasing a small set of Chromaflow to see if I like them and then patiently waiting for them to be available in the US.

  • @Mirrigold
    @Mirrigold 4 месяца назад +5

    Great video Harry! I've ordered the top up set from Cult Pens as I already have the 72 set, they're shipping them in a beautiful wooden box for no extra charge as well. I'm a huge fan of Derwent products in general and the Chromaflow in particular, I bought the 24 set when they came out, then the 72 set, and I've had absolutely no problems with them at all.
    I use a Helix helical bladed desk crank handle sharpener and it works beautifully for them without any breakages etc. I think Derwent might be pricing them slightly too high but, in comparison with the build quality v Prismacolor, then yeah, the Derwent products are far better imho, but they're out of the price range of a lot of casual colourists still unfortunately.

    ❤i took your advice when chromoflow first came on the market & they were obscenely expensive and you told me to add them to my wishlist and wait for the price to drop, which I did. It took 2 years but I got the 72 for just over $100 Australian & as I write this I am using them. I don't like how thin the pencil is but that would be my only whinge. I don't want to buy the full 150 set as I only need the new colours so I guess I shall be waiting until there is a deal on Cult Pens or Derwent as I didn't buy the lightfast or lumys until the sets were already 100. It was expensive to buy the extra inktense pencils from Derwent when they were released as I absolutely had to have my beloved inktense but I shall follow your advice again with the chromoflow pencils & wait patiently until someone releases just the new colours. The new colours look amazing I am not going to lie but in this economy crashing my already abundant stash must come first. If you hear of the new colours being sold by Derwent or cult pens a community post from you would be wonderful. Thanks Harry for all you do. Much love & *Virtual hugs* from Perth Western Australia ❤❤❤

    Those are stunning colours omg! Derwent has been on fire recently when releasing new colours. First, inktense now this? I'll definitely be adding those to my wish list! I have seen on Amazon that they also released a 100 set as well which I found interesting. But I have a full set syndrome I'll buy the 150 instead XD. I hope that one day they'll increase their Derwent drawing line as well and they can go from a 24 set to a 72 set if they want to because these are stunning underrated pencils, same goes for the graptints as well. They could give us a set of 72 with just pale, muted colours if they wanted to.
    This new set reminds me of a mixture of Derwent Artists + Inktense when it comes to the colour range. I see that they have a beautiful greyish-green colour here. They also have taken some names from the Derwent inktense line too.
    But thank you so much for sharing I'm in love with the new colors! 😍😍😍

    Just picked up my 150 set at the post office, love these pencils, I bought the 24 and 36 set, I had a blue that kept breaking till it was only an inch long and when I complained to Amazon they sent me a whole new 24 set, but when I saw the 150 I had to have them. They are so much better than Prismacolor imho , these do not crack the barrels and there are not as many pencils that sharpened unevenly like Prismacolor. To be honest I think quality control in Prismacolor is none existing I don’t think they care at all I think they are sloppy and really need a wake up. I have all Derwent pencils and they are all well made and exceptionally good. Thank you so much for your always honest opinion and reviews. I was born in England like all these pencils 😂 but have lived in Australia for 50 years now, I enjoy colouring every day that I can. 🤩🤩🥰🥰🥰

    Great review, as always, Harry! I tried them when they first came out and had a similar experience with them breaking all the time. Also, at that time, they hadn't released the lightfast ratings on them yet, so I wasn't all that impressed. I ended up giving my set away. It's good to know that they have been sharing their lightfast information and that they seem so have addressed some of the quality control issues. However, they already have so many great lines of pencils, so I really don't see the need for these ones. Your piece came out fantastic! ❤

    I was itching to get a new decent set of pencils to compliment my full set of Polychromos. I do have the full set of 120 Derwent Artists which I love but are a bit paper fussy but I wanted a softer more blendable set along the lines of the Prismacolors but I begrudge spending £200 for a set of pencils (as I last looked on Amazon) that are no doubt beautiful colours but have very questionable quality control with difficulty in getting replacement open stock here in the UK so I am very excited to see these released. I heard rumours a couple of weeks ago that a 150 set was coming so held off buying any as I didn't know a release date also I do like to support British made where I can.

    Just when I thought I was done buying art supplies. Do you think you could do a side by side comparison with the Coloursoft palette? I'm not a colour pencil artist. I am more comfortable using watercolors but I do try to insert a few colour pencils in my work and am still undecided about what I like. I like the feel of soft pencils, yet I find myself using the Polychromos more. I wonder if it's because I have them in a set of 12 and the colours are easily visible on the barrel. On the other hand I have the Derwent Drawing and almost the entire initial Inktense set that sit in a pencil case and I rarely use.

    Well they have cracked the colour pallet now, they really have. Gorgeous. And they even have a Clay Rose type colour that I would love. I'm surprised the wood is so friable, and that the barrels are so narrow, given that Derwent pencils are always oversized and can cause pencil sharpener issues. But the colours... When they get the open stock sorted I will be picking out some of those to add into my current Derwent supplies. I still love the Procolour for the colours, but they are very hard and not good on a lot of papers. Now I might be able to get some of my favourite colours from that set, + more, from these Chromoflow colours.
    Great review as always. I can't see them continuing Colour Soft for long now. But I'm really hoping that some of those dark shades in the Chromaflow are equal to the Blackberry, Cranberry and Loganberry colours of the Coloursoft.
    As for the Derwent Drawing pencils, I love those. They are wonderful for fur, apart from the fact that they are such thick cores and you therefore need to keep them needle sharp, which is a shame. I might be unique here, but I'd like them to do a version of this range with a narrower barrel/core because then the fur aspect would be really well covered.

    So glad Derwent have finally gotten around to us Brits purchasing this range. I remember the Frugal Crafter doing a review when they first came out and was stunned they weren’t available in the UK! The explanation you provided on why that was is a fair one but as another poster has already pointed out, there’s a lot of coloured pencil fatigue and I just hope Derwent haven’t left it too late.
    I purchased the 72 set of Derwent Procolour and I absolutely LOATHE them! No matter what paper I lay them down on, I struggle and end up very frustrated. I wish, back then, I’d have had the option to go for the Chromaflow but we are where we are and now I’m just not in a financially viable position to invest in a new set. If and when that changes though, these will definitely be on my wish list.
    Thanks for the review Harry ❤

      I like the procolour, but I can understand why someone might not for sure. The chromaflow and lightfast are my favorite derwent pencils, and frankly, if more of the chromaflow were lightfast, I'd use them more than the lightfast pencils...I like them better, but they don't work for me because so many of them aren't lightfast. But now I'm interested in what they have to offer again.

      Try the procolour or sanded paper. It's great on that. Ir use them with other pencils for sharp details and sharp edges. They are good for that on any paper.

    I'm not a professional artist. Less than amateur really. Prismacolor pencils really inexpensive. If Chromaflow are made in the UK, not Mexico or China, I'll pay more for them.
    By the way, the not so new Inktense colors are really hard to get in the US. Even Jackson's doesn't have them all available.

      Do you mind me asking where you heard this from? The only reason I ask is because Derwent said in a meeting that after listening to their customers concerns they were going to try and deliver the full 150 open stock. But we were politely asked not to announce this publicly only because they are not 100% sure if they can logistically do this and even if they can they have no date as to when it will happen. The reason they didn't really want videos etc being made on the subject, even though they can't really stop people from doing so, is because they don't want to cause any further upset and confusion.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 месяца назад

      Hi there, I can't comment on what other RUclipsrs say but what I can say is what was said to me from Derwent last Friday. Derwent have listened to the concerns of everyone and their plan is to sell all 150 open stock. However, I was politely asked and other people involved, to not announce it publicly yet. The reason I was asked this, and it was only a request, if I wanted to go ahead and make a video I could, but Derwent are not 100% if they can do this logistically, although it is their plan to release all 150 open stock there are a lot of things they need to iron out before doing so. They also don't have a date in mind for when this might happen and so they don't want to upset and confuse their customers any more than has already happened.
      For me personally I will make a video about Derwent releasing all 150 pencils open stock if and when they are able to do so. I really can't wait for that to happen because I would love all pencils to be open stock but I can equally understand why Derwent are approaching this with caution.

    I loved the lay down of the Chromaflow original 24 set sent to the US, and Canada. The only thing I disliked was that I found the pencils to be a thinner pencil and hoped that any bigger sets made would create a thickèr more robust pencil like the Derwent Procolour. Are the pencils the same size as their 24 set?

    I love Derwent Lightfast, and I appreciate Derwent’s idea to finally put up some competition to Prismacolor.
    However, the thing with Prismacolor is that, although it has problems with alignment, breakage etc, it is the most affordable “professional” colored pencil set. And you can buy open stock pencils for about 1-2 dollars.
    Derwent’s Chromaflow, I can’t find open stock, and the sets are considerably more expensive…
    Aside from that, I really like the chromaflow line. But they are way too expensive for such thin barrel, and having - albeit in less quantity - breakage issues…
    Of course that if one is in UK/Europe, I imagine Chromaflow to be less expensive than Prismacolor (and also, they are much more available, since in Europe Prismacolor are much harder to find)…
    In that case perhaps it is more worth the cost…
    But in South, Central and North America for now, it doesn’t seem pay off right now.

      Chromaflow can be bought open stock from Derwent's own online store (only the first 100 colours, so far), Jackson's, Cult Pens, Pencils4Artists, and the The Coloured Pencil Shop.

      Chromaflow pencils are available open stock from Blick. I pretty much agree with everything you said about them; in spite of the problems with prismacolor pencils it is an affordable professional product. Also the barrels of the chromaflow pencils are too thin for it’s price point and for my ease of use.

      When you say the sad loss of the Brand Spectra color, do you mean the 120 of Derwent Artists? I only ask because you say you e been an artist for 60 years and so was wondering if there was a pencil Derwent made that I didn’t know about. I’ve only been an artist 10 years and I still have terrible problems calling myself an artist because I see myself as a soldier more than anything.
