How to Use IOD Paint Inlays on Glass & Make a Faux Mirror

  • Step by step tutorial of how to use the IOD Iron Orchid Designs Paint Inlay on Glass.
    I found an old glass cabinet door in my stash, that I’m pretty sure I saved because of the mullions. Ironically, I decided to leave those off when I re-assembled my piece.
    Follow along to learn how to use the Looking Glass spray (which you can buy at the hardware store) and turn a normal piece of glass into an antique mirror look alike. BUT, if you love the look of the glass before you get to this point in the project, keep it as is. There are so many ways you can take this and make it your own.
    I used One Hour Enamel by Wise Owl Paint on the frame and the back of the mirror. This product has a built in topcoat, which is why you didn’t see me topcoat. You may need to use sealer if you sue a different product.
    A couple of tips for using the IOD Inlays on Glass:
    It’s super important to have a clean, dry surface and to trim your Inlays before you get started.
    Test the amount of time needed for the inlay to sit in your clear topcoat. I found that if I left it too long, fibers from the carrier sheet became embedded in the varnish.
    On a test piece, I left the inlay in varnish for a few hours. To release, I needed more water, which caused patches of the varnish and inlay both to lift off the glass.
    The best timing with the Wise Owl varnish to remove the carrier sheet was at about 10 minutes or until you can see the paper to partially, but not fully, dry.
    If you don’t like your design or want to edit it in any way, the varnish and inlay come up with rubbing alcohol and a razor blade. This is exactly what I did with this door- if you look closely at my before photo, you’ll notice pink flowers from leaving the varnish to dry too long. No biggie- its just paint!
    when you use Varnish as the Paint Inlay medium, it will NOT smear when you topcoat or sand. Bonus!
    Please tag me on Social @serendipityhousellc if you try this- I can’t wait to see your creations :) xoxo Michelle

    Something is not right! How can you have so few viewers seeing the incredible way you used those paint inlays??? Something needs to be done to bring this video to more DIYers attention! The inlays are not cheap and I've been resisting buying them, but after seeing that magical mirror you created, looks like I've got a project ahead of me.

    Oh my Michelle 😲 This is ABSOLUTELY breathtaking 😍 😍😍 I am at a loss for words‼️ Would this work on a vintage window, it has no panes in it so it's just a decent sized plain piece of glass but a window not a picture frame. I am curious because I have a tons of windows on hand that have no panes in them. I unfortunately do not have a large picture frame like what you used but I can certainly be on the hunt for one because I HAVE TO try thus technique 💯 Again, this is just absolutely gorgeous ❣️ Thank you for always being such a huge inspiration ❤️

    Beautiful now I have a question if I already have a few beautiful mirrors I would love to do this too but seeing how there already mirrors once I apply the initial varnish to lay it in will the topcoat be noticeable? I know I would just go over the area I apply the inlays but will I get streaks? And I want to make the mirrors also out of glass as well. Since I have you here with the decals are there apparent white marks on the edge at all because I have some from another good company and I can see that and their wild flowers and I’m not happy about that I know it’s a bunch but it would help me out a great deal. And Thanks ❤ you’re piece as well.

    Towards the end before you paint the Wise Owl One Hour Enamel in black on the glass, it looks like the center is solid with a blotchy "halo" like shape around it. How did you get it to that point, and make it look like that?

    • @serendipityhousellc
      @serendipityhousellc  2 года назад +1

      I think the halo shape you see is the raised paint inlays and the layers of product. Remember, I did all this on the same side of the glass. The other side is still just glass.

    So I have a mirror already it's doubtful I could get the mercury effect unless I spray over it. I'm thinking if I skip the varnish I could do your similar paint colors on the side of the mirror. I have the inlay first time I tried it the plan didn't go quite well.

    • @serendipityhousellc
      @serendipityhousellc  2 года назад +2

      I think you need clear glass to do the mercury effect. Grab a cheap picture frame with glass from a thrift shop or an ugly framed piece of art. It’s a great upcycle :)

      Hello Vicki. Usually I ignore negative comments with threats, but since I loaded this video only 5 minutes ago and your comment feels urgent to you, I will reply. Those of us who make these videos do so to create a mood. The tutorials are FREE for you to view (or not view). It takes SEVERAL hours of creating, recording and editing to upload a 5 minute video showing an entire process of a 3 day project. I am a real person trying to share art and inspiration.
      If you find the music annoying, perhaps turn the volume off. You might be surprised to know that I actually keep my own volume off, so I DO get it. That said, I don’t complain, as videos are made for an array of people with different needs and sensitivities and not just for ME. I truly hope you can find a way to enjoy the content without the music that someone else loves. Best, Michelle

      Vicki, as a RUclips content creator myself, I would bet that you literally have NO idea what it takes to put together a video. As I’m sure Michelle does, many of us have monthly paid subscriptions to music sites because we enjoy that creative side as well...creating an emotion that goes along with the art we are doing!
      Constructive criticism in comments is one thing; DESTRUCTIVE, RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL, UPPITY comments are quite another and those rants deserve to be reprimanded! More people then not enjoy the music elements in videos, so, you not liking it is your problem to solve, not the content creator’s to solve for you!
      As a southerner, I’ll give you some ideas of what my Momma would say to you...
      1) Good manners are never out of style!
      2) Don’t pitch a hissy fit!
      3) Stop whining!
      4) Stop cryin’ or I’ll give you something to cry about!
      5) Pretty is as pretty does, and God don’t like ugly!
      AND LASTLY...what we say to people with ugly countenances is simple...Bless your heart!
      Dear Michelle,
      Everything about this video was well thought out and stunning! I loved the music choice, too! I do have a question...did you get any smear in the paint inlay when you brushed on the chalk paint? I didn’t see you spritz on a 50/50 sealer water mix prior to the paint. I thought that perhaps since you used a sealer for the application of the inlay, that maybe that “set” the paint in the inlay. Your thoughts/advice?
