After the end of colonialism in the region, the notion of pan-Arabism, which promotes Arab unity, gained prominence in the twentieth century. Many nations in North Africa subscribed to this worldview, which posited that Arabs had a common identity that transcended national boundaries.
Keep in mind that not every North African considers themselves to be Arab. Many people in North Africa also identify with the Amazigh (Berber) people, an indigenous community with their own language and culture. The complex and diversified nature of North African identity is reflected in the fact that some people may identify as both Arab and Amazigh or African and Arab.
