Thanks for showing this video. Tail-draggers aren’t my favorite type of plane, but they do make me remember where a lot of people got their start. This kind of “feeling it in your bones” flying is still cool.
Steve...I'm the owner of PRK and I'm thrilled to see the video you created with Dennis. I'm hoping to have the plane flown to Labrador soon, where I live. I also have floats for the plane which will be installed in a few months. Keep up the great videos!
Awesome - Great to hear from you! Your airplane is great! - As I said in the video, you are living the dream! Happy float flying with her! Maybe I can visit you in Labrador some day.
That one gets added to the flying bucket-list for sure. Did my tail-dragger rating some years back when I had the chance but not on skis. Thanks for sharing.
It's really cool to see how much you have learned in the past six years! Your channel is very inspiring for someone who has recently begun learning to fly like myself :-) Thanks for sharing!
All of your Tailwheel stuff and most especially your CFI remind me of my learning to fly process/growing up around old airplanes. I love the fact that your CFI teaches "pitch for speed" and "throttle for altitude" as I hear this covenant being lost with each generation of new CFI/Student experiences. His comment about flying conventionally geared airplanes making you a better all around pilot is SOO true! MrJDP1974 Glad you're liking the videos, and yes, Dennis is amazing; it is a privilege to fly with him and I am so happy to be able to share his awesome training.
Totally great stuff and your work is MUCH appreciated! Is Dennis the guy letting you fly the Stearman from the front seat also? Don't tell me the Stearman is on a lease-back or something crazy like that! LOL! That would be TOO GREAT!
This was just so amazing. Never seen videos like this! You really take us along for the ride and I have to say, you make it look easy! I am learning a lot about things I may never get to do. Thanks again!
Bryan Skrenes Thanks so much! I am literally editing my next video right now - and struggling to get it done a long with "actual work"... These sorts of comments really help me find the energy to keep at it, when I am feeling over whelmed! Watch for the new one this Friday (and following new videos every 2nd Friday)
Bryan Skrenes You don't have to wait long :P I am literally just finishing it and it will be live tomorrow morning. It was an epic edit (shorter run time than this one, but a lot more editing work) but it is a good one if I do say so myself - especially if you are enjoying the Tail wheel stuff :)
THANK YOU! I have 13.5 hours in Cessna 140 and 150 aircraft at KHFB, and mostly now ride motorcycles and fly my DC-3 in FSX. I am really enjoying your series on the Super Cub. I have taxied Super Cubs, after fueling or washing them. They are really cool! Seeya ATB
WOW great video, I'm looking forward to flying a Cub, hoping to buy one in a near future. Thank you very much for sharing that with us, it's a great tutorial.
Chris Ryder Thanks! Yeah, it was an awesome flight and I was very lucky to have dedicated friends come out to help shoot in the cold windy conditions that day!
Love your videos. This is an awesome and unique way to land. It's great that you have the opportunities to take these flights, and I love the dedication you have to making great videos like these for the rest of us ;-) Wow, the dip on your first landing was heavy. Looks like the wind shear combined with a quickly-to-sink airplane at low airspeeds is a lot of work to stay ahead of.
Well done, Thank you for the videos. I love the multicam and the cut scene explanations, Very Pro. And your a damn good pilot. Thanks again for the quality entertainment.
Good job FC. Sitting here is South Florida I got a chill seeing your breath getting in the tail dragger. You nailed it. Getting ready to work on my school work at Love Field near Fort Myers Florida. With about 30 hours in 1975 (lost log book) and current 7 hours starting over I will get mine soon. Thnks for the motivation video. Fan....
Awesome - thanks man! I actually flew into Fort Myers a day after doing this flight for our March break trip! It was a pretty shocking to arrive in such nice warm weather from the freezing cold here! On one level, I am envious that you get to live there, but I also enjoy the 4 seasons we get here - Like I was flying on skis in March, and I'll be sweating during the preflight in July :P
I really enjoy your videos. I especially like this one. It reminds me of when I lived in Alaska and went flying with a friend that owned a Piper Pacer on ski's. We landed on a frozen snow covered lake and I remember that it felt like landing on a big cotton ball. Totally cool. I hope to be moving back up there soon and will be flying there again. Thank you for sharing these vid's. I really enjoy them.
I've had a dream of being a pilot (wing under twin prop) ...landing on a short bit of snow up in the mountains, and having to crab the landing in a fierce crosswind. I have never had a more exciting moment than accomplishing THAT landing safely.
Cool thanks! Sorry about the wait - the last couple were a lot of work and couldn't be done one per week. I can't promise they'll all be this epic :P But I will continue flying, shooting, editing and sharing!
Love your videos! Thank you for all the great information and footage. I've been in love with aviation since childhood and its only gotten worse (or better ;) ) with age. Almost done with my degree and flight school is definitely around the corner as soon as it is in budget. With your videos and flight sim, I feel like I'm already into my training.
Great Vid Steve. We have a tail dragger up here at my flight college, I am hoping to do some ski training next winter...if this winter ever ends anyway. Thanks for sharing!
Your videos are great. I have always wanted to fly privately but have been a little afraid of it. Now that I have some time, I am ready to fight the fear. Thanks for the motivation.
This comment is so rewarding - thanks for taking the time to write it! The entire mission statement of my project is simply to share my love of aviation - and if I can help ignite the spark in new pilots it is awesome! It sounds like you're one of "us" - those that have aviation in their blood. Get started flying and you'll never look back; any fear you have is probably that of "the unknown" - it will quickly be alleviated when you get into the training and see how easy it really is.
Great video!! I also watched your tail wheel training video it was also good info. I am also in the process of tail wheel training, because I wanted to put skies on my airplane this year. I will have to convert my plane (C-FGHQ Levitation 4) to a tail wheel to do so, which is easily done. So your videos are inspiring as always.
Catching up on a few of your videos I've not seen and not sure how I missed this one! That looked like awesome fun! Shame all we tend to get in the UK (at least in the South East) is wind and rain. Landing on snow would be an experience :)
***** Yep, the tall dude sitting in the row in front of you, next to the wall. Stay in touch, we can organize some filming with my 172 if you want. No problem hitting the ceiling in the 172, the seats adjust nicely. Piper cherokee style planes are another story.
awesome flying, going up in a C172 or possibly a PA-28 tomorow afternoon should be fun if not cancelled because of this ridiciously long winter in Eastern Ontario
Right on! I am also planning to go for a flight in a PA-28 later today - it is looking good - a bit of a gusty north wind, but should be good practice.
kelticpaddler I'm happy to share - this was a great experience and I am so glad I was able to capture it so well so that others could experience it as well.
As an aside..I am a disabled service vet and an ex aircraft technician. There is a chance that I might be sponsored through my PPL by one of the military charities here. It is one of the reasons that I have been watching your videos with interest. Regards David
Awesome! Something I've always wanted to do! I have about 3 hours in the Super Cub! I'm a private pilot and GoPro enthusiast (mostly for backcountry skiing). I'd love it if you'd make a video (or link me to) how you set up your GoPros for filming! I have a suction cup so that one is easy... but what about the rest? Anyway, I just discovered your series today and I'm a huge fan - very well made! Thanks!!
Cool thanks - I do plan on making a video about my production set-up... it has evolved over the past year, but I have a pretty solid system sorted out now... I will share that soon.
Another great one Chops! The narration you do in your vids is great, really ties the video together by providing context on your thought processes etc. You ever fly up and around Muskoka? I've spent many summers at cousins' cottages up there and always wanted to fly floats from lake to lake
Glad you like the videos! I am due to fly around the Muskoka area. I haven't done so for many years. Lately most of my cottage country flying has been east or west, not so much north.
The Super is strong enough to do this, the old PA12 with 90 hp might be a little to weak for that. Anyhow, beautiful plane, great capture, excellent explanations by instructor
That was fun to watch thanks. That last landing with conflicting traffic made me a little nervous, but hey, bush flying right? Was this in Burlington VT. I smiled everytime I heard him call Burlington as I fly out of Burlington, NC sometimes. No snow here though. :)
I hear what you are saying about the other traffic, but both Dennis and I had an eye on him and the separation was fine. - I am really happy we got that shot; it is pretty cool eh? And no, we were not in VT, this was Burlington, Ontario, in Canada.
This is a really fun episode to watch. I've been wanting to get some time in a Super Cub and I'd love to get some time on skis! Thanks for sharing the experience. #BoseA20
Great stuff! Really want to do some ski-flying aswell! Since I live in Norway I guess that is doable. Just got my tail-dragger check-out last week on a 1950 Army cub, so I can safely testify with tail-dragger flying being extremely fun! :) Keep em' coming! Always enjoyable!
Awesome thanks! I'll keep working on my videos - can;t promise they'll all be as epic as this one :P Meantime, I'd love to hear more about your flying in Norway!
By the way, I am following your vids from China. They've just opened the (very) low level airspace (below 3000', the rest being under military control) so some AWESOME flying to come here! From the last number I have seen (October 2014), there were less than 2000 general aviation registered airplanes in China (www.ecns.cn/business/2014/10-15/138549.shtml)
Awesome thanks! Happy RC flying - that takes amazing skill - I don't know how you guys do it when the plane is coming at you and every thing is mirrored.
Great video. Awesome plane too! Now go get your ASES rating! Nothing compares to flying floats. Once you fly floats, you'll never want to fly anything else!
Hey! I'm going up tomorrow in a Cessna 150 and was wondering if the GoPro suction cup with elbow mount would mount well to the far bottom corner of the front windscreen. Thanks!
should be fine. Just clean the windshield and make sure it is a flat spot. (and you're talking about the inside of course… yeah? I don't recommend suction cups for external mounting)
Wheel penetration skis are better in deep snow, than the more popular offsets, I knew a couple of guys in Alaska who closed the back of the penetration skis up with Aluminum, giving them almost the same performance in deep snow as straight skis.
+GamePlayWithNolan Glad you enjoyed this one! And I got the notification from some other questions from you but when I came here to reply they are gone - did you answer them yourself and delete? Anyway -all good - I'm happy to answer anything you need further info about.
***** Yeah I was going to ask something, but then I realized what the answer was. Thanks for responding and keep up the great videos, I really enjoy them. XD
hi there I loved the video[I love ski flying!!!] ,how the heck do you fit in a cub with heavy clothing on? hahaha just a question now I assume that runway is probably 4000 ft long ? if that's true it kind of looks like you are turning final at well over a mile out now I suppose it could be that im just watching it all on a computer screen but if it is that far is there a reason for the long final?
Hi, yes the Super Cub is a tight squeeze, even for a skinny guy like me. As for the runway... Heck no, 27/09 is 2400 feet; But that little patch that we use for grass (and in this case snow) training before the 32/14 intersection is just over 1000' long. So no, our final is not very long.
We didn't explicitly discuss this on that flight, but essentially yes, you do it the same as with wheels; however, in a tail wheel plane you really need to be on top of the rudder as it is much more difficult to control than a tricycle gear plane. Landing on snow (and grass) is a great way to train for tail wheel because it is more forgiving in that you can afford to screw up and come in with some side loading. If you land with side loading on pavement you are much more likely to have roll out control issues and risk ground looping.
what do you use to mount the gopro on the strut? i know of like 2 mounts that are made for it but you could be using something different. love the video btw! after i get my PPL i want to get rated for tail draggers
I actually used the standard GoPro handle bar mount. - the Cub has a thin "inner strut" and it fit perfectly. I'd like to look into one of bigger those purpose made aircraft strut mounts though.
MrFilmtech yeah... not really a winter plane. That's why my school actually takes the rental Super Cub offline for the winter - The plane loves to fly in the cold, but not enough people want to fly it.
If you think a Super Cub is cold in the winter you should fly a 65 hp Taylorcraft BC12D in the winter with skis. We used to fox hunt from the air with a 12 gauge shotgun back in 1970 when it was still legal to hunt from the air in South Dakota. We took out our passenger yoke & had to modify the passenger window so it would fold up & rest on the shooter's head. We used a short barrel, because of the small cockpit, single shot 12 gauge with size 4 shot for fox. The larger the engine the more heat you get. Had to wear snowmobile suits and snowmobile boots. We left engine running as we skinned out fox by tying them to rope lopes on each wing. We waited each time until we got 2 fox so gunner & pilot could skin out foxes at same time. Had to skin them to keep down the weight for Talorcraft. It was great fun but when the temperature got down to -18 fahrenheit below zero very cold.
Not sure - I'll ask Dennis if he knows - or we can just ask the owner... I'll look into it after the holidays are over - I probably won't forget, but bug me again if I do :)
Looks a bit like the one of "Association des Aviateurs et Pilotes de Brousse du Québec" (Quebec's bush pilot association). Any association like it over there?
[10:15] ... I'm watching the approaching treetops ... then they started *creeping up the windshield* ... this is where I involuntarily started *making weird faces!*
Why does it look like you're doing a half full-stall half wheel landing?! I see so many taildragger pilots do that, maybe they're newbies. Pick one or the other, and just do it. I have a couple thousand hours flying taildraggers, my favorite (and I have the most time in) is the Super Cub.
Here is a little Boca Grande 200 AGL (Punta Gorda) l run I did training. Right now I fly out of KPGD. ruclips.net/video/pT8-vCd1a7M/видео.html take care....
We need to connect next March break - my family and I go to Boca Grand every year! We stay in Englewood! I am always looking for a local fishing buddy when there! do you fish?!
small world. My wife and I live in Punta Gorda and fish up and down Boca Grande. Right now we are puling in big Redfish, Trout and Snook. I use this local guide. facebook.com/pages/Reel-Intense-Inshore-Charters-Boca-Grande-Englewood-Fl/191205610948512
TC@SWFL That's awesome! I got out with a guide and got onto some snook and trout but despite seeing somer redfish, we didn't actually catch any. Ok seriously - we are going fishing and flying next March break, yes? :)
Two thumbs up, Steve! ...and it does look like fun.
Thanks for showing this video. Tail-draggers aren’t my favorite type of plane, but they do make me remember where a lot of people got their start. This kind of “feeling it in your bones” flying is still cool.
p-51 is a taildragger... just saying ;)
Steve...I'm the owner of PRK and I'm thrilled to see the video you created with Dennis. I'm hoping to have the plane flown to Labrador soon, where I live. I also have floats for the plane which will be installed in a few months. Keep up the great videos!

I've never flown with skis, so this was fun & educational. Thank yu.
That was great. So jealous. We got 6" yesterday. Might have to give it a try. Thanks for posting and pushing me into more training. Love it!
Wow! Looks like fun! I love the narration; it really lets us know what you're thinking and gives a deeper perspective to what's going on.
Yeah, it was truly a blast! I am so glad I was able to shoot it so thoroughly - both to review and to share!
***** I'm glad you had fun!
Nice shot at the end, with both planes taking off! Beautiful!!!
That one gets added to the flying bucket-list for sure. Did my tail-dragger rating some years back when I had the chance but not on skis. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks - and yes - it was as fun as it looked!
It's really cool to see how much you have learned in the past six years! Your channel is very inspiring for someone who has recently begun learning to fly like myself :-) Thanks for sharing!
Seems like a great instructor! Great feedback and encouragement
Matt M Yes, Dennis is awesome.
Regardless of how forgiving the tail-dragger you are flying is, it is less forgiving that most tricycle geared airplane in many the context. The idea of how many rpm's on base, yada, yada really discourages me when I hear it being taught because eventually you may have to judge for yourself. Great vids!
MrJDP1974 Glad you're liking the videos, and yes, Dennis is amazing; it is a privilege to fly with him and I am so happy to be able to share his awesome training.

MrFilmtech Thanks! and I'm happy to share!
Excellent video.I got my licence in Guelph a few years back. Nice to see a vid close to "home".
ccaamm1 Awesome! Have a look at some of my other videos, and you'll find that several are even closer to home for you :)
The footage from the ground on those touch and goes were epic! Love it
Chris Ryder Thanks! Yeah, it was an awesome flight and I was very lucky to have dedicated friends come out to help shoot in the cold windy conditions that day!

Well done, Thank you for the videos.
I love the multicam and the cut scene explanations, Very Pro.
And your a damn good pilot. Thanks again for the quality entertainment.
Thanks for the comment!
I am happy to share while I grow as a pilot - it is a constant learning experience!
Loved it Steve. A truly unique experience and some great training!
Yeah the jealous anger is welling up in me. :) Nice flight, nice video as always.
My first tailwheel solo was in a Champ on skis flying off the ice on Lake Michigan.
Dennis is great. I'm using him up on Manitoulin Island (CYEM) flying a Citabria. It will be on skis this winter, so I'll be giving him a call.
Awesome, and yes, it has been a great opportunity to work with Dennis over the years.

Cool thanks! Sorry about the wait - the last couple were a lot of work and couldn't be done one per week.
I can't promise they'll all be this epic :P
But I will continue flying, shooting, editing and sharing!
I am really enjoying the tail wheel series. I was looking for carbon cub videos and ram across these. Cool.
Thank you for the video. Nice job with the touch and go with the skis.
Outstanding Job Advoko
Great flying and... airspeed-control. High-fives on the landings, Chops!

Lovely video, Steve.
Thanks man!
Great video and nice to meet you last night at the BFC club meeting.
Right on - you'll have to remind me which guy you were - I met a bunch of you "Buttonville Flying Club" guys last night and it is kind of a blur :)

Keep em' coming! Always enjoyable!
Awesome thanks! I'll keep working on my videos - can;t promise they'll all be as epic as this one :P
Meantime, I'd love to hear more about your flying in Norway!
The 4 best friends of Canadian pilots...skis and floats!
Yann Costantini that's awesome man! And let me know when your flight suit patch arrives - I'm curious how long it takes to get to China :)
Big question is will Dennis come to London to train me lol. I like his style of instruction.
Awsome video as usual
This is great video...I should try this..!
Awesome shot at 12:15!
Nice FlightChops I enjoy your videos. I'm not a pilot, I just fly RC and have a Super Cub. Great video man.
Awesome thanks! Happy RC flying - that takes amazing skill - I don't know how you guys do it when the plane is coming at you and every thing is mirrored.
Love this channel 🏆
I also find ski flying very cool: especially in Alberta in a 1950 Cub with a crummy heater.
Great video. Awesome plane too! Now go get your ASES rating! Nothing compares to flying floats. Once you fly floats, you'll never want to fly anything else!
Definitely want to try floats! It is just a matter of access as a rental pilot...
***** Wouldn't dare put it outside! As usual, enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing!
Nice! i like the longer ones..
Kudos to the cameraman! 👀
Wheel penetration skis are better in deep snow, than the more popular offsets, I knew a couple of guys in Alaska who closed the back of the penetration skis up with Aluminum, giving them almost the same performance in deep snow as straight skis.
Great Video ... My dream is to own a ski/float plane as well ... what outfit in Burlington are you training with?
Spectrum Airways - they have a great set up and a good fleet with several types, so I enjoy the variety!
I thought I saw all of the Super Cub videos, how did I miss this? lol
+GamePlayWithNolan Glad you enjoyed this one! And I got the notification from some other questions from you but when I came here to reply they are gone - did you answer them yourself and delete? Anyway -all good - I'm happy to answer anything you need further info about.

Yeah I was going to ask something, but then I realized what the answer was.
FlightChops I have a J3 cub and was wondering what you would recommend for strut mounts and for mounting on the rear fuselage handle?
Love your flying looks great to fly in Canada looks a lot better than the uk
Love it!!!!!
great vid,, i,m thinking about trading my 152 for a 47 champ tail dragger,,,,and comlet my training in it,,, great vid man
Really enjoyed this one! ;)
how do you do a cross wind landing with the the skis? Like do you land with one first and then the other like with wheels or is it different?
***** oh nice! great video again.
Is it cold inside the Cub in winter?
This is so cool! Once you get your multi-engine, you should see about flying on an LC-130! #BoseA20
Have you ever flown a Bonanza or Baron?
nope, but if you're offering, where and when? :P
Very cool
Whats that sticker on the supercub?
brown guy Not sure, can you be more specific (mention the time code when you see it) and I'll ask Dennis?
you can see it around the 1:26 mark. looks like a military sticker, or a cadet squadron.
16:03 I see camera man XD
17:03 good eye
Right now I fly out of KPGD.

take care....

TC@SWFL That's awesome! I got out with a guide and got onto some snook and trout but despite seeing somer redfish, we didn't actually catch any. Ok seriously - we are going fishing and flying next March break, yes? :)
Yes! Most def.
skis are the easiest and most fun flying not much to it
Rip super cub! so sad!
Jay Birdd Hopefully we'll get it flying again!
***** Sure will be checking in to see!
+FlightChops Any news on it
