Hey James Great video. I have created my dream job by diving and making videos. OK you could argue its a business rather than a job but by carving out my niche, whenever I speak to dive shops and I show them what I do they always have a more in depth conversation with me. Some of them have asked if I want to come and work for them. Im in a fortunate position to turn down jobs because I know what I do and what I dont do. I think your advice is sound. If you want it, then specify it and make it happen in a small way yourself so that a dive centre can look at it and say, "This one is serious about this so lets hire them"! In todays age of media its easy to visually demonstrate what we are good at, interested in, knowledgeable about. If your thing is wreck diving, start an instagram account and post photos of wreck dives, write a blog, write a book. Stake your claim on a particular niche and develop that to the furthest extent you can. You have to stand out as an instructor and really the best way to do that is to put in the work before you are asked.
Awesome videos brother, I’m about to be retiring for the second time and plan on going down the instructor rabbit hole for my final career. Instructing and diving, two things I love. Great content friend, keep up the good work. Also I’ll be sure to bring coffee when I bring my resume haha.
Great as usual! Although I see you posted this in 2019, I've been drawn to these types of videos lately as I will be "retiring" in about 3 years from a public safety job and intend to work in the dive industry. I appears my SSI certification may not get me as far in the areas I want to work, so I am moving over to PADI and taking my Rescue Diver next month....then moving on to Divemaster, OWSI, etc....so I can get some teaching experience locally before i pull the plug and move to the Caribbean! Videos like this are very helpful. Thank you!
@UCdPKPmLGJRoyUB_0n-u-0Rg, In all these years watching videos, I've never been inclined to write a comment or express appreciation to one of RUclipss' artists. I've just recently completed my PADI OWSI (MSDT PREP), and I have loved watching and taking in your videos. What a mentor you are to the lot of us. You, mate, have great content, transparent opinions, and offer thought out advice all the way from fledgling divers to the end of the tec spectrum. Keep it all coming! I hope to meet you in Florida one day.
James, love your vids man. I have to confirm, that 1 second footage @2:55, is that Aruba? Were you on a Red Sail boat doing a dive? I was born and raised here so I quickly recognize my hotel skyline on the island, I just didn't expect to see it here.
@@DiversReady I have a silly question. I want to change my BCD air supply hose to flex hose. How you measure them ? End to end (Including the fittings ) or just a rubber portion ? 🙄🙄
Mikas Auto Inc. end to end, usually. Have a look at this link, and you’ll see the standard sizes in the drop down menu: www.divegearexpress.com/bc-inflator-double-braided-flex-hose
Hi James, my question for Part I video, how do u you see including your life style in resume like no smoking, no alcohol, regular runner or long distance cyclist ? how you do see these information in resume ?
Hi Adam, he earns every cent of that money. The cruise ship crowd is tough! Been there, done that, not for any money! But hey, if you can sit back and boss and hire your front liners, happy days! Dive safe. James

Great advice maybe you could talk more about building a diving center business from the ground up in a future video. Thanks we appreciate your content

I learned my lesson after being hired to the wrong place to work
Do you have any resources on CV layout's so that I can show what is most important to a perspective employer straight off the bat?
Hi James,

Maybe just open a shop in a tropical paradise and take tourists diving that come in on the ships. My buddy did it and clears at least 250k a year.

Yes thats what diveshops are al about making money, they dont give a crap about you, all they care about is your money.....
How can I get one of your shirts? :)
