    The author of the original novel wrote this as a way of explaining death to her young daughter, whose best friend was struck and killed by lightning.

  • @nightmareman9960
    @nightmareman9960 7 месяцев назад +65

    The movie is based on a children’s book. The book was written by a mother as a way of helping her 8 year old son make sense out of a tragedy. Her son’s best friend was struck by lightning and died the book was a way to help her son understand and process some of those feelings.
    The second half of the movie does a great job at showing the process of grief in someone who should never have to go through it at that age. First denial, disconnecting Leslie’s funeral with her actual death, then anger over the event at other but mostly himself, then depression over realizing that person is actually gone, then finally acceptance

    Imagine a classroom full of 6th graders reading the book out loud. And we get to THAT part. Our teacher prepared us for a “sad” part. We weren’t ready. Now imagine an entire classroom sniffling. A few boys asking to “go to the bathroom” so they can go cry. We ran out of tissues. Ah, memories.

    Before Jess met Leslie, all he did was fantasize. He knew they were just drawings, and was okay with that.
    Then he met Leslie, and for a moment, she managed to convince him that fantasy was reality.

    • @dreamfall77
      @dreamfall77 5 месяцев назад +1

      She convinced him, yes. And then, when he returned and was dumbfounded by the news that did not fit into this, the first thing he did was check his album in search of drawings of his naughty little sister. Because two explanations became possible: either Leslie herself dreamed by him, or she pretended to be dead for good reasons. In the album he found a portrait of her drawn by May Belle. So the second one is true. Then he tries to understand the reasons for what happened, for example, trying to apologize for not taking her to the museum, because suggests that this may be the reason and immediately receives the answer that he is her best friend, after which he says strange words to the music teacher. As a result, he independently opens a portal to Terabithia.

    When you're a child, when another kid dies it's jarring and confusing. Leslie wasn't sick and new veiwers never expect it. That's the point. That's why it feels so out of left-field.

    never saw the movie but read the book as a kid. as an adult, i can appreciate the death coming out of nowhere, because that's how tragedy often is. it doesn't matter that she had loving parents and a bright future, where Jess had so many things stacked against him. there is no fairness to who gets to live and who doesn't.

    The book it's based on is from the 70s, so I think that's where some of that questionable stuff comes from, like the teacher taking Jess on a trip alone. And yeah, if a bus driver kicked a kid off a bus and made him walk, the parents would own that bus driver and probably the school district 🤣

    In fifth grade my teacher had a movie night every Friday right after school in the classroom for the kids who kept good grades, good attendance, and got a permission slip signed of course. We loved that, the whole class worked hard so we could all always be part of it. Well one week the movie was Bridge to Terabithia, and man, it had an entire class of fifth graders in tears. Teacher had to pause the movie and give us a 15 minute break to go out on the playground and recover. To this day whenever someone tries to meme Bridge to Terabithia its always met with a "too soon man" comment, and of course they reply with the fact that it came out in 2007 so how is 17 years too soon? Well it just is, it will always be too soon. Bridge to Terabithia was the first thing to ever make little kid me face feelings like that in my life, I was not ready haha

    I've seen this movie so many times, I'm starting to think Leslie planned out her death. Leslie could've had smiling depression. A few key points is that Leslie's arms are always covered which could hint at her self harming. Leslie had this whole world made up out of nowhere, meaning she's been coping with her parents neglecting her when they write. Leslie also wrote a poem that parallels her drowning. The biggest evidence of her planning her own death was that Leslie chose to go to Terabithia the only day Jess isn't with her. She probably saw that as her only chance to do the deed and make it seem like an "accident."

    • @dreamfall77
      @dreamfall77 5 месяцев назад

      Not smiling depression, but light sadness. No, her arms were uncovered when she invited Jess to visit her and they painted the wall with her parents. This world was created by her, among other things, in order to catch Jess, who believes that he was imagining all this when he fell from the tree with the keys. The poem written by her served several purposes at once: - to explain in an allegorical form what was happening, because according to her, she had not been to the sea; - check Jess for compatibility because he saw bubbles; - turn envious classmates against her so that she end up sitting next to Jess on the bus. She went to Terabithia alone because she pretended to be dead for good reasons, and Jess should have figured that out on his own. But you are thinking in the right direction, everything that happened is the details of her plan.

    I've read the book multiple times and seen numerous versions of this movie, and every iteration just kills me. But I can't stop myself from doing it each and every single stoopid time!!!😫😫

    She dies because she's based off of the authors childhood friend, who ALSO passed away

    This movie was based off a book and the author wrote the book to help explain death to children after their own child’s friend died suddenly. That’s why it happens like that.
