Dude you got to see the original! Trent wrote it in his late 20's and it hits like that. But Johnny Cash sang it as an old man and it feels like that is what it's about! Also after this cover Trent still sings Hurt but he does it with the slightly altered lyrics Johnny changed. When asked why he did it Trent basically said when god changes the song you sing it that way!
@nathanclarke2777 I like to look at it as Trent's version is a young addict singing that song and regretting a lot of his decisions in regards to his addiction. Johnny's version is that same addict as an old man realizing that everything that happened when he was an addict is part of what made him who he is and he wouldn't change that. Those choices ended up being important lessons for both Trent and Johnny. Johnny just had the wisdom and a couple of decades more to understand that changing that part of his life would have drastically changed the rest of his life.
He knew this would be the last song he ever performed. He was actively dying when he made this and he knew it. This was part of an album put together specifically help to pay his mounting medical bills. He intended this video to be his final statement. He died with many regrets.
One of the very few covers better than the original. Trent was reluctant to let Johnny do it, but once he heard it, he straight up gave it to him. "It's his now." The only other cover that comes as close to this one is Disturbed's Sound of Silence.
I firmly believe and will always believe that Johnny died of a broken heart. His love of June was so true, and so deep, that he lost his will to go on without her. A great man, and a legend for all time.
My Dad passed 4 months after Mom. He just gave up. He stopped eating. Had a massive stroke on what would have been their 50th anniversary. I too, believe in broken hearts. This video is both brilliant and painful to watch.
This song seems like it was built to be performed by an older person with a lot of experience with life’s pain. It doesn’t work despite his age, it works because of it
Yep, everybody has the exact same reaction at the end of this one no matter how many times you listen to it. You just sit there for a minute like holy shit.
BTW, Cash wife June Carter was well and truly alive in the video standing on the stairs... the old lady in the picture was most likely Cash mother. Hths.
This always makes me cry. He's saying goodbye. The woman in the video was June Carter Cash, his wife. She died on May 15th,2003. Johnny followed her on September 12th,of the same year. Only three months after her. Many believe he lost the will to go on without her. The framed photo on the wall was his mother.
It's funny how a song of a "hit rock bottom drug addict pouring his heart out in regret" gets banned, but change it to a "hit rock bottom alcoholic pouring his heart out in regret" goes #1. Trent Rezner admitted that "this is HIS song now". 🤘
Amazing cover of this song by Johnny Cash... he is realizing in the song (My Empire of Dirt) that all he has accomplished is meaningless!!! My empire of dirt.... is that an analogy to the fact he will die and from dust (dirt) to dust we all return??? This song affected me... I felt this deeply!!!
I can remember seeing the "Hurt" video for the first time many years ago. I remember thinking to myself...."dam! he nailed it! It's about time somebody spoke in a hard and truthful way about life itself for the world to hear." What a fkn reality check! and then I hear its a cover....not even his own words....just another performance to yank my fkn chain.
Another 'good bye' song that really hits hard is David Bowie's Lazarus. The album, Dark Star, was released on his 69th birthday, just 2 days before his death, and he knew his time was limited when he recorded it. He only told those close to him about his cancer and worked on his art up until the end. If you have not reacted to David Bowie or are not familiar with his songs, it is not the best song to start with, but after you do a few, give that one a shot.
I still can't bring myself to watch that one. It may forever live in my Watch Later. Had I known he was going to pass so soon after it was released, I would've watched it that day.
Mr Cash was basically blind when he recorded this and although he didn’t write this one it’s a huge reflection of his life, bless his wife who saved him
Theres a channel in India that shows the people there American songs and even with a language barrier, the older men got teary-eyed. They could FEEL the pain.
The original made me cry when I would listen to it in high school, but this one makes me cry now. same song, two different feelings and meanings behind it in each version. The original was perfect for those youthful years pain where as this is for those who have lived a bit longer and a bit older.
Brother man, I needed this today. Always appreciate you. My mother recently passed and having many spiritual journeys lately. We are not promised anything. Go hug your family BP !
Nine Inch Nails said this is Johnny Cash’s song because he put so much feeling and reality into the words. This was about 12 months before he died and a 6 month before his wife died in surgery. The original I’ve heard played on the radio, it’s just background noise.
RIP Johnny Cash. A true legend blending Outlaw Country and Rock a pillar of The Highwaymen and Yes you should definitely check out the original. It's an ENTIRELY different feeling. Polar opposite.
"It feels like he's saying goodbye". His daughter said the same thing when she saw it. Johnny replied "I am". Check out the original. It has a different feel
It goes to show you how great a performer and entertainer Johnny Cash was, even in his final days he MOVED people! And he is still moving people after his death with this song! What an ICON!!! I think it would be a great idea to react to the original to show why the original creator said this is now Johnny Cash's song! I am sure after both of your reviews of certain songs, you go back and listen to the songs again and let your real emotions feel the song in private and that is your right.
2:29 "It Feels Like A Goodbye" Johnny's daughter pretty much said the same statement after they'd wrapped filming the video, saying something along the line's of "Daddy, It Sounded Like You're Saying Goodbye," to which Johnny's response was "I Am"
Thank God Johnny gave an interview after this was released.... I was actually distraught thinking he was so tortured. By the time he passed he was at complete peace with his Lord. He had forgiven himself, made all his amends and was at peace. If I had not seen it from his own mouth, this video would be way too depressing! Please react to some of the other American Recordings like Drive On, or Deliah, Mercy Seat, Rusty Cage, etc
I can't even count how many times I have listened to this, but it chokes me up every single time! Not sure if I'm having a Deja Vu moment or what, but I could have sworn u had already posted this!
Dude! Much respect dawg!! I was an R&B singer in the late 90’s in most NYC clubs. My home spot was a place called the Soul Cafe owned by the actor Malik Yoba. What a great cat! I really dig your intellect, man you sharp AF! I want ya ta check baby-boom!! Chaka Kahns Kid sister. She with the band The Undisputed Truth, ifn ya aint already, ya gotta hear they joint “Smiling Faces”! Stay up player✌🏼
The picture is his mother, his wife June Carter-Cash is standing behind him on the stairs….she died about a month or so after this video was shot and then he died like 3 months after her
@BlackPegasus His daughter watched video & told him it sounded like a goodbye & Johnny said “I is”. Picture was his mom & lady on staircase was his wife. His wife passed a few months after video release & Johnny passed a few months later. He was a bad diabetic.
In my opinion there are 4 covers done that either matched or exceeded the original. This one, Falling In Reverse - Last Resort, Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence, & Kacey Chambers - Lose Yourself. There may be more but those 4 are the ones I always instantly think of as far as epic covers.
Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) has said that this song is now Johnny's. Another song that feels like a goodbye song - if you want to react to it - is a song by Ozzy Osbourne: "Ordinary Man." It was released in 2020 on the album, Ordinary Man. The other good one on that album is "Under the Graveyard." This songs video tells the story of how Sharon helped Ozzy sober up.
Just watched your goodbye earle react too you might wanna check out two black Cadillacs June died first 4 mos after and Johnny was gone a few months later merle, Waylon a lot of his friends were gone Willie the only original outlaw still left 9 inch nails after hearing Johnny 's version said it was his now and signed copyright over to Johnny grew up listening to them all love watching younger generations discovering the artists I grew up with..✝️🙏♥️😊
You should react to the Nine Inch Nails version. Same lyrics very different song, the meaning completely changes. Two very different artists, in two very different genre's, at two very different times in their lives, and both hit. There's a movie "Walk The Line" from 2005 that won tons of awards and Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon performed all of the songs themselves, without being dubbed. It's amazing.
It's his mom! June was literally in the video. She passed soon after this tthen Johnny followed her four months later.
When his daughter heard the song, she said it sounds like you're saying goodbye.... he said, "I am."
The picture is his mom. The lady on the stairs is June Carter Cash, his wife.
And June passed away just a few months before Johnny.
@audreyiohnson4599
Actually, the woman in the photograph was June's mother, not Johnny's
@@karlsmith2570 Thank you for the correction.
I knew as soon as I heard June passed he would follow her quickly. Those two went through the fire and back.
Dude you got to see the original! Trent wrote it in his late 20's and it hits like that. But Johnny Cash sang it as an old man and it feels like that is what it's about! The Jimi Hendrix cover of All Along the Watchtower is another.
Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From My Friends
@@billm7531great song 😢
Have a listen to Kasey Chambers cover of Eminem’s Lose Yourself.
Most of DIsturbed's music is covers. Which was a shame when I found out. Indestructible to name another off the top of my head.
I firmly believe and will always believe that Johnny died of a broken heart. His love of June was so true, and so deep, that he lost his will to go on without her. A great man, and a legend for all time.
He stumbled in such a love.....lucky fellow !.
My Dad passed 4 months after Mom. He just gave up. He stopped eating. Had a massive stroke on what would have been their 50th anniversary. I too, believe in broken hearts. This video is both brilliant and painful to watch.
Johnny even at that age, sends chills down your spine. RIP the amazing Cash. There will never be another.
This song seems like it was built to be performed by an older person with a lot of experience with life’s pain. It doesn’t work despite his age, it works because of it
Johnny Cash was a living legend and national treasure.
I think it’s unanimous that Johnny Cash’s cover of this song is absolutely stunning! He was such a powerhouse of a musician. His voice is incredible!
When Johnny closed the piano case at the end, it was like he was closing his coffin. 😢
Yep, everybody has the exact same reaction at the end of this one no matter how many times you listen to it. You just sit there for a minute like holy shit.
his hands so expressive at the end,,,,,tear up every time
I cry every time I hear this song by Johnny.
Showing Jesus in the song shows his faith and that he is ready to meet his maker!
Cash died in september, 7 months after the release of the song his wife who is in the video died in May that same year.

I have heard both versions of this song but Cash’s makes me cry.

I love that the video included shots of a crucifixion with nine inch nails-most people don't even know that's where the band got its name from.
The part that always gets me is when he closes the piano and runs his hand on the lid. Ball like a child
Like the song Johnny Paycheck sang! Old violin.. hurts my heart

It's called a Swan Song. The last, most beautiful piece before death.
Another 'good bye' song that really hits hard is David Bowie's Lazarus.
