rocket water heater and shower

- Jennifer’s first time lighting the rocket water heater! Featuring Josiah's narration. Both wonderful Boots in the Boot Camp here at Wheaton Labs. As you can see in the time lapse taken of the rocket stove, it doesn’t take long at all for the wood to burn down, and then you have 40 gallons of hot water. From start to finish, it takes about an hour, with only 5 minutes of actual work, before you have a perfectly hot shower for 6+ people. If more people want to shower, you can just add a little more wood to keep it going, and the insulating properties of the rocket stove will keep it hot all night. Even through cold nights!
This rocket stove was recently rebuilt in the 2019 Appropriate Technology Course here at Wheaton Labs to make it even more efficient! In this video we detail all the changes that were made to it this year, and how they affect its’ safety and productivity.
Thanks to my patreon peeps for pushing me into making videos again

Part of the new josiah series. He has more coming soon! What are things at wheaton labs that you would like to see a video of?
Everything you have there!
Listening to pod 357 with Ernie and Erica when this video came up 👍🏻 I would love to see some of Jocelyn's flowers! 😘🌻🌼 And Sepp's grain 🌾 and of course the most important question about the grain, can it be made into Pizza?
I’d be interested in seeing food production and storage, relating to how self sufficient Wheaton lab is. 100%? 50%? Same with power- all solar? Some generator?
@@UltraHuman *huckleberry pie
@@365techtips fair enough -- two food group? 🤔
I was amazed at how long the water stayed hot for. I fired it up at night and it was still warm the next morning despite being a cold night!
That seems more a function of the tank isolation than of the heater
@@Ed19601 that and the thermal mass of the water.... oooh microclimate!
monkeymanwasd123 i dont know for sure but I’m pretty sure water has more heat holding capacity than mineral-based substances like cob brick or concrete per volume.
@@Dollapfin I think it was dramatically better
That all depends on how well the water storage tank is insulated. If you built an enclosed box around it and stuffed it with insulation i bet it would probably stay hot for a couple days. Spray in foam insulation would probably work best to fill any air gaps.
Those shower models are rockin' it!!
Lol
Thanks guys! Love the information and alternative approach, we're gonna be snagging some ideas for sure! :) Blessings guys! May you keep evolving forward with the rocket stove technologies! Life saving!
The sound is great! I'm very stoked about non-explosive rocket powered hot water.
I like the idea that if you like to wake up to a hot shower you could do the burn right before bed (warm up next to the fire sipping some tea 🍵) then go to bed and wake up and not have to do anything to prep for a nice refreshing shower 😊 sounds luxurious to me!
Wow very sweet set up
Man I miss being out there constant innovation, I love it.
That's SO cool!!
The vertical waney edge siding is gorgeous.
Awesome! I do love gadgets.
Can we see more about how the tank was built and insulated? How is the heat transferred to the tank? How high is it up off the ground?
I forwarded you question to josiah. I think so. I think some people took some video. Here's some pics to get you by for now permies.com/t/117410/permaculture-projects/ATC-Photos
That’s awesome!!!!!
Wheaton Labs... love the name.
I figured it was a tip of the hat to bill nye the science guy and nye labs.
I’m thinking this would make a nice setup for a heated slab in a garage. It’s not as fussy about temp the way a house would be, so you could roughly regulate it by running a a couple burns a day, more or less as needed. The slab absorbs excess heat so less worries about over temp or pressure issues. Circulator could run on a timer.
helpful video
Cool stuff, that is actually hot :D ;)
So cool
How did you insulate the chimney? Did you use the chimney Darwin at Honey Do Carpenter made for you at the pdc last year?
Dunno. The info might be here permies.com/wiki/40/101802/ATC-Technology-Montana#955034
Dirtpatcheaven that’s what I was thinking, honey do design
The heat riser to wood feed hopper ration looks near-optimal... Does the front have a door for cleaning and pre-loading?
I would love to see something like this built to heat up a 6000+ gallon pool
How does the thing work? Is there any videos of how'd to build one or is it "top secret"?
I posted some links to pics in other comments. Josiah is thinking about making a video for this. We do, of course, have the 8-dvd set, which includes DVD 3 which is all about rocket hot water.
Compost hot water heater I would like to see you guys do next.
I do have a video about that! ruclips.net/video/-Jm-c9B2_ew/видео.html
Can you show how to build it
we have some pics and video that could be mashed into a video. i forwarded your request to josiah.
@@paulwheaton thank you
are the any instructions on how to build this exact system? I and my community would appreciate a lot.. what's the best way to support you Paul?
The build you see is version 3.0. You can see a little about building version 1.0 here pdcvid.com/
@@paulwheaton I'd love to buy the project plans or something
Paul isn't it possible to make a rocket mess water heater I don't know that's why I'm asking thanks
Do you mean a rocket mass heater where the mass is water?
Yeah yes I do
@@brucegill4218 There are several threads about this at permies.com
Dang. When I turn my propane torch upside down it goes out!
We have super deluxe fancy pants torches that do upside down!
@@paulwheaton Double dang!
Were are you guys located my soul needs to visit and talk about honesteading
Montana!
I feel so far away . I'm in Ireland.
Traditional rocket stoves have the fill and light opening at the front. I am surprised that having it at the top of the body results in higher efficiency. I would expect the opposite
Are you talking about the L-tube style?
@@paulwheaton indeed, correct
Results in a “test” of the pressure release valve eh lol
Marie Lawson Am I the only one who made a “PSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH” sound right about then?
Where is the video with instructions for how to build the water heater and attach it to a shower?
permaculture-design-course.com/
What is it? primis.com? Could not make out the .com address?
permies.com
110? Doesn't seem hot enough
She shouldn’t hold a propane torch upside down
Unless, of course, it's a propane torch that is designed to be able to be held upside down. Which it is.
Amazing that as soon as You Tube updates...... it quits working!! Videos just spin to load.... spin and spin and spin. REDICULOUS
A propane torch to light dry wood? A little too much carbon footprint, wouldn't you say?
We need to release some carbon so grass can breathe it in and grow faster, so cows can eat the fast growing grass, so we can eat the tasty cows, drink the tasty milk, and consume the tasty butter... Why would we want carbon bound up in fossil fuels??? Such a waste of CO2... 🤔
OR you could have 6 people take a shower all at one time,,, love hippy communes
Very nice & like others I also would like more details.
But seeing her lean over the fire with her long hair hanging near it was concerning. I had a relative who died from leaning over a fire - her hair caught on fire. Hair ties are cheap insurance...
