  • Jennifer’s first time lighting the rocket water heater! Featuring Josiah's narration. Both wonderful Boots in the Boot Camp here at Wheaton Labs. As you can see in the time lapse taken of the rocket stove, it doesn’t take long at all for the wood to burn down, and then you have 40 gallons of hot water. From start to finish, it takes about an hour, with only 5 minutes of actual work, before you have a perfectly hot shower for 6+ people. If more people want to shower, you can just add a little more wood to keep it going, and the insulating properties of the rocket stove will keep it hot all night. Even through cold nights!
This rocket stove was recently rebuilt in the 2019 Appropriate Technology Course here at Wheaton Labs to make it even more efficient! In this video we detail all the changes that were made to it this year, and how they affect its’ safety and productivity.

That all depends on how well the water storage tank is insulated. If you built an enclosed box around it and stuffed it with insulation i bet it would probably stay hot for a couple days. Spray in foam insulation would probably work best to fill any air gaps.

The sound is great! I'm very stoked about non-explosive rocket powered hot water.
I like the idea that if you like to wake up to a hot shower you could do the burn right before bed (warm up next to the fire sipping some tea 🍵) then go to bed and wake up and not have to do anything to prep for a nice refreshing shower 😊 sounds luxurious to me!

I’m thinking this would make a nice setup for a heated slab in a garage. It’s not as fussy about temp the way a house would be, so you could roughly regulate it by running a a couple burns a day, more or less as needed. The slab absorbs excess heat so less worries about over temp or pressure issues. Circulator could run on a timer.
