    Thank you for this short and sweet informative video. Although you have mentioned in the description, I would like to ask again, minimum and maximum masking level for AC masking can be determined through the same method? would it be the same across frequencies? could you kindly make a video of masking issues seen in cases with u/l profound hearing losses? thank you

      Plateau method is the most accurate method (however based on subjective responses, those variability remains) of masking. Its a little time consuming procedure.
      1) In the video only one frequency in one ear has been explained. The same has to be done for all the frequencies. Threshold has to be re-established for each frequency.
      2) Also in clinical practice it is not necessary to do the whole procedure as explained in the video. If the masked threshold in test ear do not shift for three consecutive noise increments in the non test ear, the procedure can be stopped for that particular frequency.
      3) However when we do the whole procedure (which is not necessary), we can see both the minimum masking level, maximum masking level and plateau width. Also, this minimum and maximum masking levels comes in handy to determine masking levels for speech audiometry (overview in another video)
      4) If the plateau width is narrow (15-20 dB), there are high chances that over masking can occur (masking dilemma). The width of the plateau can be increased by using insert receiver to deliver noise in the non test ear (can be used in U/L hearing loss as well), to avoid possible chances of over masking (Masking dilemma as well).
      Pardon me for a longer explanation, please look in to the text books to get more information with these information as a head start.

    Sir in the end bc has come below the ac what can be done?

      Yes, the example has discussed BC masking alone, AC masking is to be done. When done, it will shift down. Thanks for pointing it out.

    so if i was asked what is the effective masking level here what would
    it be ?

      Effective masking (EM) level in simpler terms: Assume the hearing threshold is 15 dBHL for a pure tone, now the minimum amount of noise required to just mask this puretone will be 0dBEM; if the amount of noise shifts this threshold to 30 dBHL then that noise level will be 15 dBEM; if threshold is shifted to 20dBHL due to noise presentation, then that noise is 5 dBEM.
      Hope this helps

    sir in maximum masking level we have BC of test ear + IA so which BC we have to take unmasked BC or masked one ????

    • @flank-facilitatedlearningi9580
      @flank-facilitatedlearningi9580  3 года назад

      Unmasked one. Only at this instant we need to know what can be the maximum noise level we should provide in NTE. Hence we will only have unmasked BC threshold at the TE.
