Wink Martindale had nearly all second stringers what with all the guys leaving to the NFL or in the portal, and they pressured Milroe nearly every play. The offense had their last string quarterback after the next-to-last string QB got hurt, and he was handing off to two running backs that saw hardly a minute of playing time before the ReliaQuest Bowl. The big 'what if' for me is: Ryan Grubb came with DeBoer to Tuscaloosa to continue as OC, barely unpacked, and then went back to Seattle to become OC of the Seahawks. What would have happened if Ryan Grubb had stayed in Tuscaloosa?
It's the same for my Sooners: What if Jeff Lebby and Dillon Gabriel had stayed in Norman for the 2024 season? They were 10-3 in 2023, with the last loss the December bowl game after both had left. The future looked very bright in November 2023, and now we see BV--like DeBoer, a very fine coach--on a hot seat, of sorts, (though the folks in charge are more understanding than the impatient fan base.)
Lance Leipold was the up-and-coming next big thing: If one could win in Lawrence, Kansas, one could win anywhere. Penn State takes away his OC Andy Kotelnicki, resulting in KU having a tougher season in the very competitive Big 12. Meanwhile, Penn State takes a big step forward.
These head coaches, we think that they're all-powerful, but they're at the mercy of a lot of elements that they have no control over. It's not easy.

But he also lead Bama to 9-4, which is better than any head coach in their first season. And he had Jalen Milroe shackled to all of his decision making. Now that he's gone, he has to grow a set and be a leader and not let the locker room be the head of this program.

Not a Bama fan as I graduated from Michigan State but I loved Saban and after that one player refused to come off the field and DeBoer didn’t suspend him for at least half a game I knew they would run all over him. Reminds me of Remember The Titans when Coach Boone told the other coach not to coddle the players and by doing so he was crippling them for life. Saban would have never let that fly. But there is a reason why Saban retired. He knew he wouldn’t be able to back up his starters with bench players who were almost as equally talented. Now late in the 3rd and 4th quarter these SEC teams have to sub in guys who aren’t as talented, especially in the trenches, and it showed this post season. Good luck to the SEC moving forward, should be fun to watch the rivalry with the Big Ten for years to come. Cheers 🍻

Cause we have a loaded WR room for next season and are actually talented everywhere. We need a OT, maybe a TE, possibly a RB, then a couple of other pieces to add depth. We’re getting everyone back except Jihaad Campbell at LB, Malachi at Safety, and Booker at OG…also Milroe is gone but that’s gonna help our win %. Bama was bleeding players after Saban left and it continues. DeBoer made a mistake leaving Washington and trying to follow a legend. It never works out. i am not sure how good the recruiting is either.

Definitely not judging DeBoer of the record this season. Judging him off his decision making around QB and also what he does with the staff now.. If he keeps OC, I am all in favor of him being under immense pressure

The REAL problem I have with Deboer and the staff is the LACK OF ADJUSTMENTS. It’s like they go into a game with a game plan and if it doesn’t work they seem to struggle pivoting. In every loss and the second half of the Georgia game they didn’t adjust to what the other team was doing.

Yep, next season will determine DeBoer's fate. Alabama is built for playoffs. Alabama doesn't make playoffs next season, DeBoer is gone. The only question is? Who would replace him? Hopefully, someone who can discipline players.

Urban Meyer is still influencing college football. He went to the B1G, and dominated. At his first B1G press day, he scolded the other programs for being mediocre and lazy. He beat Jim H so bad, that he was forced to get better. Michigan has now made Ohio State go up another level. Those two rising tides, along with NIL, have lifted the conference as a whole. Meanwhile, the SEC got comfortable in the shadow of Nick and Kirby, ehile chanting, "SEC, SEC".

I don't think Bama fans are that upset. Its the coaches first year! The oddsmakers were being ridiculous in making Bama such big favorites in the games they lost. You can't make accurate odds based on a teams past performance, and that is what's been going on this year.

Here's why Alabama fans should be concerned about KDB: After DeBoer's 1st yr at Washington, they went 10-2 and were definitely on an upward trajectory, including beating TX at the Alamo Bowl. You could feel it, esp after Penix said he was coming back for '23, which also got all the other starters to come back to try and win a national championship, which they nearly did.
What should bother Alabama fans is that there is no feeling of upward trajectory w/ their team after DeBoer's 1st year. Instead, everything got worse. And it ended with a thud at the bowl game a few days ago against Michigan. Concerning.

Hot seat after one year and winning 9 games is crazy. Lmao. But I guess I can’t blame bamas fandom considering they had 13/14 years of success under Nick Saban. 6 nattys, multiple BCS appearances, multiple playoff appearances, and a couple of new years six appearances in the playoff era.
DeBoer needs to step it up because this isn’t UW, anything less than playoff appearances will not cut it.

Yeah only the crazy fringes of the bama fanbase are disappointed with this season. We had literally as much go against us in the preseason and still managed a 9 win season in the SEC. That’s a pretty good start for a head coach imo. We Bama fans have lived on top of the world for over a decade, we know that couldn’t last forever, and are willing to allow a new guy some time to grow.

Paul Finebaum et al it is unfair to gauge a new coach on his year one performance in the SEC. Coach DeBoer has the opportunity to learn from many lessons he should have learned in 2024, including team composer, tackling, strength and conditioning etc., etc. The SEC is very unique in that virtually any team can beat you on a given day. Players have to be very focused one play at a time and one game at a time. Saban knew this. Any deviation from intense focus can result in defeat. If you have players, superstars or not, that are not fully focused and all in on the demands required for Bama's SEC success get rid of them! This is not the former PAC 12 with razzle-dazzle football-lite plays that are reminiscent of that which we all played in our backyard as kids. The SEC dictates that you must have a strong defense with an offense that can run the ball whenever needed and not just the quarterback! And what's with this heavy reliance on a 3-man defensive front line in the run heavy SEC? You must be able to not only stop the run, but also routinely harass the QB. You have to be able to run the ball when the opposing defense has a very good defensive backfield. Heck, you need to be able to run the ball with success every single day and still maintain explosive plays in the passing game. The SEC is not the powder-puff Pac-12 of yesteryear. One very important thing I think that Coach DeBoer does not know is that in Alabama, and most of the deep South, football is not just a game or a form of entertainment, it's a statement about who we are as a people or tribe. Don't mess with Bama, ever! This runs very deep and has been so for over a century started by our Great Grandfathers in many instances many decades ago. Therefore, Alabama football dominance is in our blood and failure to live up to the tribe's expectations hurts our pride and we won't tolerate it. After having read Paul Finebaum's newspaper articles for many years in the past, I know he too knows this. But we must be fair and I think that most fans realize this. We did have what in many corners of our nation would be considered a successful season at 9-4, but this is perhaps only OK for year 1 for a new coach at Alabama, but not for the long-term. If Coach DeBoer learns these lessons and many others from his inaugural 2024 SEC season and we have much better success in 2025 then I will continue to support him. If not, look out Coach DeBoer because it will not be pretty. Bama fans will revolt big time because fair or not, it's a matter of embedded tribe pride. Coach DeBoer, roll up your sleeves and get to work right now because the clock is ticking and kickoff on August 30, 2025 in Tallahassee is right around the corner.

I just find this conversation hysterically funny. All I can do is laugh at Paul Finebaum. It is interesting two years into the NIL era, and Nick Saban seeing the landscape change and retiring (don't blame him at his age to not want to compete in this era) that the college landscape has changed. Finally schools outside the SEC can now pay for players and compete for top talent. Just look at the exodus of players hitting the portal from Alabama. It isn't like no one is leaving there because that's the greatest of all time. And it isn't because Saban left. It's money. Finebaum needs to change his narrative if he wants to be relevant.
