The despair in his face in the governors office was palpable when he realised that there was nothing he could say they were never going to wreck an officers career just for as assault! He showed me how to squeeze through a 30 mm drain pipe without hurting myself. How I miss those days at the maze.
Imagine how many allegations against the screws ever had a favourable outcome for the cons. Pretty close to zero I reckon. I wonder now, with CCTV everywhere if screws in modern nicks can still get away with that type of malarkey?
I doubt that they can even get away with looking at a con funny nevermind anything else!! The prison system is now in favour of the prisoner and nothing like this here, this is 40 odd years ago and back then even kids got a slap in school for basically nothing, these times are gone forever now and it makes me wonder if that's a good or bad thing really?
Throughout the 1970's/80's Strangeways was a prison where unprovoked assaults/abuse/racial discrimination etc. was dished out by prison officers on a daily basis. Most of these incidents would not be reported by the inmates as they would almost certainly be thrown out. Prisoners had nothing to gain and everything to lose by making a complaint Gov. Norman Brown was fully aware of what was going on. In the event a prisoner complaint was submitted, it would be custom and practice for prison officers to close ranks and corroborate one another's false accounts. Magistrates, board of visitors, doctors, etc. were all part of the system and, as a result, anything but independent. It was somewhat ironic there were prisoners in Strangeways at this time who had received custodial sentences for the criminal offence of carrying out unprovoked assault. The very same criminal offence prison officers were carrying out on a regular basis and received a salary & pension for!
I barely used to eat when i was down the block..it was screws doing servery like on this and i didnt trust the cunts cz you was always down there for fighting with them etc..i dropped that much weight whenever down block..not good memories ...this guy got stitched up..back then screws could string you up and they would all just stick together and nothing would happen so a minor assault on the lad was never going anywhere..shame for him though...some of them fuckers were inhumane back then and when i was doing time in the late 90s throughout a lot of 2000s 😢
Wonder how this investigation would really have gone on without the TV cameras. Obviously a stitchup on that lad , and the screws and prison officials were on best behaviour .. showing how none bent they are for the Telly. Thugs
I worked in the courts here in NZ. we have a similar system in terms of the running order of prisons. Board of directors , here in NZ its called visiting justices , they are justices of the peace who have no legal training.the JP's are mainly old white conservative people who have no reason to question the likes of prison guards or the system .Their decision making process was a comedy of errors . I had the misfortune of clerking these hearings . to describe them as a kangaroo court is an understatement indeed
It’s funny how they took his comment about hearing the screw had keys or something that made a similar noise and twisted it and completely changed what the guy said. I mean it’s here recorded that that’s not what he said. They all close ranks and protect each other. In my day which was much later than this the screws hit you regularly. It was just an accepted part of the prison experience. The cops as well.
I miss being straight.. back then I was a straight guy.. I'm now bisexual with young Pakistani boyfriend. I seriously think that the media and society made me gay
Prisoners today seem much more violent and out of control (not due to 'toughness', I'm sure these men were much tougher) but it's because the screws here were lightyears apart from the ones of today. Took no sh××e, very firm and you know straight away who's in charge. The softness from today's prison system, its authorities and decision makers have now made them into a situation where the prisoners are pretty much running it. Serious question: Why is it that every single prisoner from way back here come across as far more intelligent and can string a sentence together, unlike today's?
“.. do you agree you have been allowed to say what you want in your defence?” The wording says it all. The guy is claiming he’s the victim. He’s not the one that needs the defence. I have done a fair bit of time in my day. In prisons just like this. I have met cons like him. He’s a door scratcher and I wouldn’t be surprised if he made it up and cut himself. Bare in mind he openly admitted he threatened to cut himself. However it makes no matter. Wether he did or didn’t there was only going to be one outcome. In the screws favour. The guy could be standing there pissing blood with the screw standing right beside him with the guys blood all over his knuckle and the out come would still have went in the screws favour.

Dodgy doctor. But then, if you're even a half way decent doctor you would not end up working in a prison. Probably the only medical job he could get. Would put money on it he was drummed out of previous medical roles.
I was on the side of the guards and thought this prisoner was lying, until the prisoner asked for a test to be done on that sharp object. this throws doubt upon the integrity of the guards defence and the whole investigation and the impartiality of the tribunal. They introduced that object as evidence and were obviously implying he used it to cut himself. At the end of the day the prisoner was not treated fairly, they made it look like he was, but, anyone with a ounce of intelligence can see whats going on here. However, saying this, i don't feel its worth getting a guard dismissed or disciplinary and mis-conduct letter in his personnel file, over a minor incident. They did listen, investigate and had a trial, even if it was prejudiced.
Feel so sorry for this guy. the system should pay for rhisand the people who convicted him poor man. I bet they look back at this today if they still alive to think o fuck...
@@zeddeka I don't think I have all the facts to make a balanced judgement. But, I would try to be impartial. If the evidence says the guard is guilty of gross misconduct then he should face disciplinary action and dismissal.
The way that sharpened object was then discarded as evidence once he introduces that idea is suspicious and withdraws this inquiries legality of impartiality. Too eliminate that kind of evidence that would have key significance and answered the question outright if it was a self inflicted injury so their investigation was inadequate.
They are a bunch of bastards. Why do you think Strangways went up in a riot? I was in prison in the 70s for driving offences, Winson Green, Birmingham witnessed dreadful violence against prisoners from prison officers. I was threatened myself several times for trivial things. Some of those officers are worse than the prisoners believe it. It is the truth, and if you were black, you’ve got more than your fair share of violence.
Exactly. The scandal about the Medolsmley Road Detention centre in county Durham told us what was going on in jails back then. An awful lot of organised sexual abuse by staff against prisoners too.
What I notice about this documentary is how people are in there doing 6-9 months for crimes which nowadays wouldn’t EVER give you prison time . They probably wouldn’t even prosecute them. There’s people in there doing 6 months for shoplifting , criminal damage . Just like misdemeanors that would never get you prison time .
Because social attitudes back then were still absolutely Victorian. They had no clue that putting someone in jail for minor offences and short terms would actually make many of them twenty times worse. There was a kind of brain dead authoritarianism thoughout so much of British Society back then. We still had corporal punishment in schools. Anyone who didn't confirm was hit hard, with no comprehension that it often didn't work and made matters twenty times worse.
Having a society that comes down hard on criminal behaviour is justified as lacking that structure leads to chaos. Everything in moderation as being firm but fair is what everyone needs and society does need boundaries as we all need to take responsibility for our own choices and decisions wether good or bad, then learn from such experiences.

Proper short back and sides.
Keys .... they keep bringing up the keys. Said from the beginning he couldn't say what was in the officers hand
I noticed the screw who had the allegation was wearing a dirty big ring on his hand. It would definitely make the same type of injury.
Brave lad to take on the prison service
If you saw where these men come from and the abuse they've endured its no wonder they end up in prison
What kind of quack doc would say that kind of injury not possible. I'm sure the doc got his xmas bonus.

"Strangeways....everything you want from a store and a little bit more"
Imagine how many allegations against the screws ever had a favourable outcome for the cons.
Did someone say Jeffrey Epstein?
Throughout the 1970's/80's Strangeways was a prison where unprovoked assaults/abuse/racial discrimination etc. was dished out by prison officers on a daily basis.
Most of these incidents would not be reported by the inmates as they would almost certainly be thrown out. Prisoners had nothing to gain and everything to lose by making a complaint
Gov.

Look what they did at Corcoran! One of the most secure and modern prisons in America. Oh and this was the late nineties.

The prison guards attacking an inmate...Never. I wasn't surprised the Warden took their side as it wouldn't have made his prison look good.
Kangaroo courts! Disgraceful.
The bloke didn’t stand a chance.
U can clearly see this is a kangaroo court.

They are not talking Jafracian blud.
"the damage was laughable" just let that sink in
boo hoo.
You can just tell that guard bashed him it’s written all over his face
They always stick together an the doc is going to back up the screws he will av it hard when the screws get there revenge on him
Yeah but the crims also stick together and very often lie sssooooo......
“.. do you agree you have been allowed to say what you want in your defence?”
The wording says it all.
Bear in mind a bare bear is still dangerous.

Tis' but a scratch.
Dodgy doctor. But then, if you're even a half way decent doctor you would not end up working in a prison. Probably the only medical job he could get. Would put money on it he was drummed out of previous medical roles.
The guy who he wanted as a witness was a right weirdo. The self important way he acts and talks is so irritating it's unreal. What a muppet.
You feel the guard shouldn't suffer any penalties for covering up the physical abuse of a prisoner? Dear God.
I k ow people are in prison for a reason , but I did feel sorry for the prisoner Ian
I loved the camera work at the end going further and further away from the light in the cell door wow !

Why was you threatening yourself ?
@@jamiecoulson1016 what are you talking about numbskull?
Exactly. The scandal about the Medolsmley Road Detention centre in county Durham told us what was going on in jails back then. An awful lot of organised sexual abuse by staff against prisoners too.
@@petemullen842 numbskull fuck me your patter is rotten.
Corrupt to the core.
Welcome to 20th century Britain
What I notice about this documentary is how people are in there doing 6-9 months for crimes which nowadays wouldn’t EVER give you prison time . They probably wouldn’t even prosecute them. There’s people in there doing 6 months for shoplifting , criminal damage . Just like misdemeanors that would never get you prison time .
People used to get 6 months for a joint
