Your videos are the best miniature painting videos I can find anywhere. The detail and explanations you go into are amazing. I'm so glad you are doing Blood Rage now, I am going to get this board game soon and have been looking for painting guides. You work is truly awesome.
Loved the tips on snow basing and I can already see applications for those techniques of blending blue with my flesh tones to produce some interesting effects. Thanks!
I came to this particular video late due to interest in the Kingdom Death videos and owning those particular models. The detailed explanations in this first video was so helpful. Reasoning on why you mixed and thinned paint. How to go back and fix certain errors. Why you painted things a certain way were no longer included in your later/newer videos and I really appreciated them as a beginner here. You inspire and help a lot with these videos. Thank you!
Thanks a lot Rexsomnii! With the first episode of a new series I usually like to go over some of the basics etc (perhaps with the exception of the KDM series which is geared a little more to the more advanced painter), so I'm glad you liked it :)
Well, well, well, look who got an airbrush! Great job, as always, Sorastro! I love the introduction of the zenith highlighting technique. Not many people know this EASY way to get some great high and lowlights.
Awesome... I'm French. You helped me to learn some paint technik from 1 years. Because of Corona I'll have time to paint my blood rage game and finish descent :). Thank a lot dude.
Hi! Yes - you could watch my Legion Vader video: ruclips.net/video/oz0udatIVGA/видео.html or perhaps my Venom video: ruclips.net/video/ZKbbJvFgpXY/видео.html Or even my recent Black Widow PDF guide: sorastro.com/2020/03/21/black-widow-pdf-painting-guide/ :)
My favorite (and the best) mini painting channel! And now your are painting Blood Rage, so glad I started panting it this month :) but it will take a while to get to the big guys, hope you do more before I get there. Thanks!
Amazing as always Sorastro! It's nice to see a true to the artwork giant, rather than the cold blue most everyone paints him. thank you for all of the great content!
Sorastro's Painting just finished the video. Amazing work! it's great seeing you progress and get better each video. I'd love to see you paint a 40k model as a special video sometime.
I've found this video - and all of your others - incredibly helpful for beginners and experts alike. Your videos are very well structured and your detailed instructions are easy to follow. I picked up Blood Rage merely because I liked the idea of a Viking-based board game - but the miniatures really had "PAINT ME" written all over them, which is why I decided to give it a go. WOW! I'm really impressed with your Star Wars series (BTW I paint all my figures one by one with your guide) but what I saw here just dropped my jaw. Now I know what I need to buy.... :) Moreover, the level of your videos is incredible. The light, the camera, the music. Man you're incredible, really.
Hands down, no contest, the best how to paint videos online. Nothing compares. Hoping we'll get to see some Blood Bowl when it releases. I'd figure painting one model from each team for the videos would suffice seeing as the models look more or less the same and uniform and wouldn't be as big a project as Star Wars or Zombicide. Here's hoping. :)
+DominionDee That's quite a compliment - thank you very much! I'm pretty excited for Blood Bowl (takes he back to my childhood!). I'm not sure where I'll fit it into my schedule but I'd love to cover it if I can :)
So happy to see you painting Blood Rage! Now if only I could find Retributor Armour and Ulthuan Grey in Canada. Thanks Sorastro, can't wait to see which figure you will paint next!
+Amanda Thompson Thanks a lot Amanda! If you have access to Vallejo paints you could use Pale Grey Blue (VMC 70.907) as a substitute for the Ulthuan Grey (and any deep gold colour would be fine for the armbands) :)
I've been waiting for Blood Rage for a long time as it was teased in an earlier video. Looking forward to learning how to fix those bent spears on the vikings.

Thank you once again Sorastro - you videos keep on inspiring and making me try new techniques. It all started with IA but now I'm waiting for Massive Darkness so here's hoping you could cover it in the future :) If anyone from CMON is reading this (and they should) - you did the best possible move by picking up Sorastro - so much following and respect all over the net - and well deserved! OMG: You've done it. This is like your most amazing painting tutorial. You've gone into CMON territory as well. I am so happy to see you paint Blood Rage, and like I said before, once you move over to The Others: 7 Deadly Sins, I promise to become a monthly patron. My set of The Others is waiting for your Jedi guidance. The Others has finally arrived in Europe, and there is no good painting tutorials on them yet. I love Star Wars Assault, but the miniatures run from mediocre-to-pleasant as sculpts. I'm so glad to see you take on miniatures with more expressive details and contours.
Hello mate. View lots & lots of painting vids, and yours are right up there. fantastic paint work, explanations and pro' video techniques. keep going please.
Your best video to date! Wow! If I didn't already have my massive Black Plague and The Others Kickstarters to paint, I'd rush out to buy Blood Rage now! :) I am definitely going to try the snow effects though.
Hi there Sorastro, don't know if you'll ever see this but I had a quick question about issues I had painting my Frost giant. (I'll also understand completely if you're too busy :) I decided to paint this guy with a very aggressive blue tone, my main colours were Vallejo's Steel Gray and GW's Baharroth blue (with nightshade as a shade). I had a very difficult time making the highlight layers appear smooth, and non-streaky. If I thinned down my paints too much, then they would just leave watery streaks and not actually layer, and if I added just a bit more paint, then it would leave a very harsh contrast line when I added some highlight layers. I started Steel Gray, mixed in some Baharroth with the gray, then almost pure Baharroth, and then pure baharroth, so I don't really understand why the contrast between layers were so harsh. Here is a picture of my piece to show you what I mean - i.redd.it/q16u64bjcvqy.jpg - You can see specifically what I mean on his forearms. Do you know where I went wrong? Sorry for the long-winded message, and if you're too busy to answer me then I understand completely :) Cheers!
Hi Julian! Firstly I must say I think you've done a great job with your frost giant! I do see the issue you mention and I have a few thoughts: Firstly if you're progressing from really quite dark to quite bright in layers then you will need to increase the brightness gradually (which I guess you actually have done). Secondly, every paint behaves differently and it could be that Baharroth Blue's high pigmentation is making it tricky to layer with: You might try mixing some Temple Guard blue with some White Scar to achieve a similar tone and see if it's any easier to work with. Finally, if you're using water to thin with (which I do) you may like to try medium instead which may help achieve thinner layers with less streaking/separation of the pigments. Good luck!
Thank you so much for the reply! I really appreciate you take your time to help out your community. By far you're my favourite painter on RUclips. Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to try it out next time I paint something neon blue ;)
still is cool, though did wish to see mice and mystics, but either way, I've finally got Zobicide and now I'm going to get more paints and start painting with your tutorial, thxs so much for the videos
I suggest getting the original and trying it out, before the expansions, does take time to learn but is a very fun table top game, plus I do wanna say that the 1st expansion Heart of Glorm is difficult to find, and can be rare (I had barely found 2 at a store in lubbock texas, and even the sight has been out of stock for a while) though mice and mystics original and 2nd expansion downwood tales is still available and can be found at tabletop games. (plus they both have a lot of minatures to paint)
Hi thanks for the guide. I was thinking there wont be snow on the rock its going to throw... may be more likely mud. A dash of realism in a fantasy setting.
Thanks for all your great work Sorastro! I learned a lot from your videos and had fun watching them as well. Please keep doing what you're doing and ofcourse: More Blood Rage please! =)
Thanks a lot Halvar! A mentioned in my January update, I will be tackling the Fire Giant this month :) sorastro.com/2016/12/31/coming-soon-for-january-and-beyond/
You mix a lot of your paints, how or where did you learn what to mix with what and with how much? I'm always very impressed by how you take colors and mix them. Even when you do a bunch of thinning with lamium medium, how do you know when or how much to use?
Amazing skills and best painting videos!! I just discovered your channel because I was looking for Blood Rage painting guide. I'm just a beginner though. I learned a lot from your video. I want to paint all of my miniatures from Blood Rage one by one with your guidance. Please do more of them! We really love it! (Blood Rage has beautiful, detailed minis, please make them a priority!)Cheers!
Superb work, Sorastro! I've been learning a lot from your various series, and I must admit, they're pretty entertaining too. However, I should say that I am quite new to board gaming and figure painting in general. So besides those games you've already covered, what others would recommend to a newbie like me. I, for certain, have been taking a look online at 'Talisman' and 'Cosmic Encounter' and both have really impressed me. Having a collection of my own is an idea I'm very keen on, and knowing what games you would recommend me for starting it, is all the more reassuring. Whether it has miniatures or not, I'd be very glad to know. Best wishes, mate!
Thank you Siegfried! (Great name btw - I'm quite a fan of the Ring Cycle :) ). Recommending board games is a very tricky business as so much depends on what you're into, how many people you get to play with (and their ages) etc. I think it's best that you check out board game reviews of the games you're interested in (which I'm sure you are doing anyway!) but I can recommend the following channels: Drive Thru Review ruclips.net/channel/UCBYM2vSw8EUTBDavzOwdyPw, Board Game Brawl ruclips.net/channel/UCWiV-TiENprwwj1xiyj8jQQ, No Pun Included ruclips.net/channel/UCtU-oQXFKUMFvhunPrx7U-w, marcowargamer: ruclips.net/channel/UCqjObEZh6BQw2xpgMjPZ7qg and I'm sure you will have come across Tom Vasel's reviews at The Dice Tower: ruclips.net/channel/UCiwBbXQlljGjKtKhcdMliRA These guys usually let you know what kind of gamer the games are best suited to so you can make an informed choice :)
Awesome! I can hardly wait, starting with my own miniatures soon and hope to achieve your level of perfection ;) Glad to hear you are going to continue.
Wow, that was amazing. The airbrush technique was some next level stuff, I haven't worked up the courage to try airbrushing yet... And the music was probably your best peice of work yet!
Once again, I'm just in awe; the final piece looks amazing. I was a little iffy about the skintone initially, but those last few layers of highlights really tied it all together and the small patches of snow in the hair/fur were a great addition. On a semi-related side note, perhaps you can confirm; based on the art and the minis we saw, this appears to be a sort of fantasy-Viking themed game, am I correct?
Could you do air-brush tutorial later? Just curious what would be the budget air brush for zenithal highlight. HP-C seems to be a bit expensive for a beginner like me.
Hi again! I'd like to do a basic airbrush tutorial at some point.. I think something like the Badger 105 would be a good solid choice to get started with :)
Hello there! I'd probably suggest priming in grey, then if you wanted some zenithal highlights you could drybrush some white using a downward motion with the brush.. 😀
Love the mini! I'm curious, though. Does the air brush of the black/grey/white really do much for the mini in the end? I ask because I've painted many minis myself and have found that with layer upon layer of highlights, shadows, detail, etc. you can kind of omit some of the work buried beneath. At least to the point that it's "not worth the effort"? Just thought maybe a white primer w/ a wash in the shades of color that you'll be using for the base coat would be ok and save a lot of time?
Thank you Tennethums1! Thanks for the comment; you do raise an interesting question! I think you're right that if we apply too many layers (especially if they're not properly thinned) then we will obscure most of the zenithal highlights beneath. In reality I admit it's hard to tell how much of the finished contrast is the original zenithal highlight and how much has been applied afterwards, but I think it's more than one might think. What I find when working over zenithal highlights is that I have much less work to do in establishing the basic light and shade - which isn't to say I won't still go to town building up the upper highlights however - it just feels like I've been given a good head start or at the very least, the zenithal highlights provide a very clear guide as to where to place the highlights. I also feel that if I'm priming in black with an airbrush anyway, that adding the grey and white afterwards really isn't too much more work (and quite enjoyable too!).
Wow great, honestly I will pledge later on patreon (which I did never before), your content is incredible good! You even covering every step with great detail. You deserve something in return. Greetings from Germany!
I just ordered this game and was curious about the painting process as i have never painted a miniature. Your video popped up and within the first 10 seconds i subscribed and liked! Amazing video quality and matching talent :) I am curious though, how often do you release videos? And, do you do a video for each mini in the game? Keep up the Great Work!!!
Thank you very much! I currently release one video per week, although most of those are for Imperial Assault, Descent and Zombicide. I will be painting the entire Blood Rage box however; it just might take me a while :)
Hi Sorastro! These painting guides have inspired me to pick up my brushes again. Your methodology is simple to follow and produces fantastic results! Thanks. Is this series, and possibly the Descent series, going to get added to the app?
Great job, great tutorial, the best explanation I've ever seen, actually! Is there any texture of a model you recomend using airbrush technique to apply paint? I'm asking cause I've watched a lot of trolls painted in such a way (warmachine/hordes mostly). They look very nice but it seems to me that traditional brush technique suits trolls better.
Thanks Rafał! I honestly haven't had that much experience with the airbrush beyond simple priming and zenithal highlights so I can't really advise. I'd suggest just trying out as many techniques and ideas as you can and see what works for you :)
It seems to go better when I use a little to much water than to little. Still struggling to make it more smooth, luckily I have a few figures that I try out the colours on.
I'm really interested in the zenith highlighting undercoat technique. Question: You choose cold grey as the 45-degree highlight. Would you consider that color reasonable for any application or do you change it based on what color is going to go on top of it? For example, If I want to apply that technique to a plague marine using citadel death guard green as the base coat on top of the zenith highlighting, would cold grey still work? What considerations do you make when choosing the undercoat highlight color? Great work, thanks a ton!
Hi Eesoteric43! Yes I tend to prime most of my minis these days using the black-Cold Grey-white approach. I've yet to experiment with using colours for my priming/pre-shading partly because I like to keep things simple - especially for the majority of my viewers who don't own an airbrush but I think it would be well worth experimenting with if you do have one :)
Sorastro's Painting thanks for the reply! I’m getting more and more comfortable with my airbrush. I picked up a variety of grayish tones both warm and cool. I’m going to experiment and if I come across anything interesting I’ll keep you posted!
Evolution towards airbrush and highlight priming! Again a step up :) How's the airbrush priming compared to the regular spray can priming? Really nice result again! Might have to look for a copy of blood rage now..
Thanks Tom! Priming with an airbrush certainly feels a lot cleaner and gives more control, and despite the initial outlay it will be a lot more economical in the long run as spray-can primers are so expensive :)
I will add my experience with Vallejos primers as well. As Sorastro said, you use less primer for the models because you can better aim with your airbrush. But you have to wait a long time (over night) so that you can paint on it. Canprimer dries faster but so much paint will not hit the target :( I perceived no difference in the properties of the dried primers
Thanks both for sharing your experiences! Spraycan very quickly results in overspraying the miniature, clobbing some of the fine details. Is this less of an issue with the airbrush?
+Tom Paulussen Hi Tom! Absolutely - because an airbrush lets you control how much paint is ejected you can much more easily apply thin layers to build the tone up with little risk of over spraying :)
Hi, I have a query from using a similar rack like Blood Rage. Do you play with these figures? Will the color or pedestal be undamaged when the player attaches or removes the color separator? Even though the figurines bear a color, it is sometimes a problem to remove the divider.
Hi Petr! Yes, taking the coloured bases on and off will most likely remove some of the paint from the edges of the base. It's up to you whether that bothers you or not :)
How does the snow effect powder react (if at all) to the Testor's Dull Coat, if sprayed after snow is applied? Any melting? And could you tell me where you find your custom bases I have seen you use in the past. Thank you.
Hi Toronto1967! The snow powder is unaffected by the Dullcote (in fact the Dullcote helps to seal it). I get my pre-made bases from: shop.microartstudio.com/ and there should be links to the specific bases in the respective video descriptions :)
Your skill is unbelievable. I can't stop watching your videos! A couple of questions: would blending be better if you do the highlights first prior to shading? Second, I don't have paints yet, but what colors would you recommend getting first? Or would it depend heavily on the set of figures? Thanks!
Thank you Niko! I wouldn't usually put a heavy glaze over delicate highlights, but you could apply a thin glaze to help blend things together. Regarding paints - that depends entirely on what you're painting, and there's no harm in building your paint collection up gradually :)
Fantastic video, again. I'm wondering though how you store the miniatures? Currently they are in a plastic zip bag and I was considering the Broken Token Insert. But with the modeling of the bases, I fear the insert will damage the base. Do you or Cool Mini or Not have any storage suggestions?
Thank you Mattias! I currently have my BR minis housed in a display cabinet, but I think as long as you don't go over-the-top with your basing they will still fit nicely in the moulded clam shell packaging that the game comes with :)
Mr Sorastro. I love these videos. I'm currently going through and painting these 4 models. Cani ask how you make the highlighting look so seamless? I simply cannot do this like you do. Any tips? Mike appear more.blotchy than yours
Thanks David! Try to keep the paint slightly thinned, but don't overload the brush so there isn't too much paint going onto the model. Try to brush into the direction of the brightest spots too.. :)
Your videos are the best miniature painting videos I can find anywhere. The detail and explanations you go into are amazing. I'm so glad you are doing Blood Rage now, I am going to get this board game soon and have been looking for painting guides. You work is truly awesome.
Thank you so much Arran! That's a very kind comment and much appreciated :)

hi sorastro I watch a lot of youtube tutorials but i'm blown away by this , your use of colours is amazing , thanks
Thanks so much Jon! I really appreciate that :)
Amazing tutorial!!! I've seen A LOT of tutorial about painting minis and none as good as this. Thank you!
So fun to watch! I really hope to see some more blood rage paintings!
+Chris Webb Thanks Chris! Yes, there will be more.. :)
Just when I thought you couldn't do better, you out do yourself. Well done Maestro Sorastro👏👏
Trully hope you can finish painting the rest of the monsters and one clan member! FANTASTIC job man! I also hope you can make this your full time job!
Thanks a lot Sewell! I am now actually producing videos full time (thanks to Patreon) and will absolutely be finishing the Blood Rage base set :)
Another fantastic paint job as usual. Excited to see what you have next in store for us to see.

The new citadel texture paints are awesome especially the snow one, I think you'd like it especially for a mini like this with all the snow on it
+Jack Penman Thanks Jack - I also like the technical paints! (Although you do get a lot more product with the Vallejo pastes) :)
Yes! Sorastro is painting Blood Rage!!!
Hurrah! :)
finally!! thank you Sorastro lad!!
You're welcome :)
That snow wash is pretty cool. just watched one of their videos on it...and bought it.
+Apocrypha2012 Yeh - it might be useful for some of the IA Hoth stuff :)
WOW, some of your best work I have seen yet.
Thanks a lot Jesse! I appreciate that :)

Amazing as always Sorastro! It's nice to see a true to the artwork giant, rather than the cold blue most everyone paints him. thank you for all of the great content!
Thank you! I'm glad you like the color scheme; I really wanted quite a natural look :)
I always struggle with painting the skin on the Chaos Hellbrute model so this will be very helpful!
Awesome! I'm glad you've found the skin recipe useful (and transferable) :)

Perfect! Thanks for the quick reply.
Wow! You really stepped up your (already VERY impressive) game for this tutorial! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this!
+Heroes & Bosses Thank you sir! I really enjoyed working on something quite different :)
This is making me want to buy Blood Rage now... loving the new music as well. Well done Sorastro!
Thank you Mark! I'm glad you like it :)

Awesome!!! Please, continue painting Blood Rage minis. ASAP. Congrats
Thank you mikesbrito! I will be painting all of the miniatures from the box but it will be quite slow in coming.
Ok, tks!
Looks great. Can not wait till I see some Sins painted up Sorastro.
Thanks Methos! I will be producing at least one Sins episode pretty soon.. :)

I've been waiting for Blood Rage for a long time as it was teased in an earlier video. Looking forward to learning how to fix those bent spears on the vikings.
Probably hot water then cold water will do it. Hot to bend them straight and then cold to harden the plastic again while you hold them straight.
Mother of God... Stunning job!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that 😀
Thank you very much for this. :)
Love the music in the background. Great work!
Thank you Sir! I'm glad you like the music - I had a blast composing it :)
Your best video to date! Wow! If I didn't already have my massive Black Plague and The Others Kickstarters to paint, I'd rush out to buy Blood Rage now! :) I am definitely going to try the snow effects though.
Thanks a lot Eddy! Glad you liked it :)
Fantastic work!
Thank you Liam! Much appreciated :)
Finally ! Brazilian fans of Blood Rage are grateful!
Hi Hellboy! Thanks a lot :)
Looks awesome. Looks like a great game. I'm waiting for Massive Darkness, this will help me get some great painting ideas.
Thanks Jeff! :)
Hi there Sorastro, don't know if you'll ever see this but I had a quick question about issues I had painting my Frost giant. (I'll also understand completely if you're too busy :)
I decided to paint this guy with a very aggressive blue tone, my main colours were Vallejo's Steel Gray and GW's Baharroth blue (with nightshade as a shade).
+Julian Schuetze No problem Julian! :)
Wish you could do the same for all Bloodrage characters héhé... awesome work
still is cool, though did wish to see mice and mystics, but either way, I've finally got Zobicide and now I'm going to get more paints and start painting with your tutorial, thxs so much for the videos
Thanks Alexander! I may well pick up M&M to play with my daughter so I might still cover it at some point.. :)
Thank you Mateusz! I'm glad you enjoyed the video; I will be producing more Blood Rage videos in the New Year :)
I'm looking forward to it :)
I absolutely want more of this! So awesome Dude :-D Good job!
Thanks a lot! I'll be painting the Fire Giant later this month :)
more blood rage please...stunning video😍😍😍
Thanks a lot Strullrich! There will be more Blood Rage coming in the New Year.. :)
Wow. How on earth did you figure out to mix those colours together to get such an interesting skin tone?!??
Hi Alex! I think I remember looking at the artwork and just playing around a bit to find a look that I was happy with :)
Sorastro's Painting Thank you very much, Sorastro! Will take all of those into account. Thanks!
Thank you, Kane! Really appreciate you took your time to answer, I'm very grateful for the advice. Best wishes!
Awesome skill! Would priming white, and black washing be an alternative to zenith highlights?
Absolutely amazing!!! Can´t wait to see more!
Thank you! :)
My sweet God! I was wondering if you will paint miniatures from BR. And what a surprise today! Great job!
Thank you!! :)
Hey man, you HAVE to continue your Blood Rage Work! I refuse to watch any other painter doing videos of Blood Rage!
+Darkgreg Lol thanks Darkgreg :) Don't worry - I am going to cover the whole set, it's just going to take a while..
Awesome! I can hardly wait, starting with my own miniatures soon and hope to achieve your level of perfection ;) Glad to hear you are going to continue.
Just wow. that's a lot of work to make something essentially white. LOL. Great work, stunning finished product. I learned quite a bit.
+Richard Jefferies Ha ha - thanks Richard! Go and watch episode 2 if you want to see some more colour.. :)
Oh, I have. I love it. As I said on the IA forums, I now want to create a miniature of my WoW Shaman just to paint her like that.
Wow, that was amazing. The airbrush technique was some next level stuff, I haven't worked up the courage to try airbrushing yet...
And the music was probably your best peice of work yet!
Thank you so much Christopher! I really appreciate that :)
Loving the vids 🤘🏻 Rock on keep doing them you got me back into the hobby 👍🏻
+Pict_of_the_north Thanks again mate! :)
Another perfect painting tutorial, awsome work as Always! :-)
Thanks a lot Alrethian! :)
Thank you! Yes you are correct! It's a terrific blend of Euro-style area control and card drafting with a nice "dudes on a map" thematic feel :)
Hi there,
If you can't afford all three color spray paints but still want to keep all the details crisp, what is the best single primer color to use?
Hello there! I'd probably suggest priming in grey, then if you wanted some zenithal highlights you could drybrush some white using a downward motion with the brush.. 😀
thanks for this. very very useful to a beginner like me.
+leonn54 Thank you leonn54! I'm always happy when I hear that I've helped a beginner access this wonderful hobby :)
+Steven Orthey That's very kind - thank you Steven! :)
really cool new serie and still an awesome paint job! ;)
Thanks Monte! :)
Thank you Matt! Yes I believe all the series will be added to the app in due course :)
Awesome as always!! Thank you so much!
+Daniel Kleinschek Cheers Daniel! Much appreciated :)
Loved to watch it! Not how I would've done it but I like what you've done here, great work. Any ETA on the next video?
Thanks CarlCreed76! The next Blood Rage episode should be ready by the end of the month :)
Any tips to get a smoother base without using glaze?
Hi! Keep the paint reasonably thin, but don't overload your brush :)
Why do you sometimes use lahmian medium and others Vallejo medium? don't they do the same thing? Amazing work!
nvm saw my answer further down.
Any Chance we can get other tutorials for that series? The giant is fantastic
+Francois Baller Thank you Francois! Yes, the next episode will probably be next month :)
Sorastro's Painting Cool keep up the good work :-) I love your chanel
Your painting skills are really impressive....!!! :-)
+Leif & in Farbe - Brettspiele Thanks a lot! :)
Wow that was truly inspiring! thank you!
Thanks a lot Abz! Much appreciated :)
