Welcome to the fascinating world of Faxanadu, a classic NES game that I’m excited to introduce to you. This game was developed by the renowned Hudson Soft and published by Nintendo in North America in 1989 and Europe in 1990. It’s a spin-off of the popular Xanadu, which is part of the Dragon Slayer series. Faxanadu is an early example of the side-scrolling action-platform role-playing genre, often referred to as a metroidvania.
In Faxanadu, you are immersed in a 2D scrolling world with a side view perspective. The game’s graphics and design are a testament to the capabilities of the NES system, providing a rich and immersive gaming experience. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to investigate why the elf fountain source has stopped. This is no easy task, and you’ll need to talk to various characters to gather information about places, tools, and more. Each conversation is a puzzle piece, helping you to solve the mystery of the elf fountain.
The game features two level bars, M for magic and P for power. These bars represent your health and magical abilities, and there are several ways to recover both level bars. As you navigate through the game, you’ll encounter various enemies. Defeating these enemies not only clears your path but also rewards you with EXP. Accumulating EXP helps you reach better ranks or titles, enhancing your abilities and making you a formidable force in the game.
Faxanadu also uses a mantra system, which are essentially passwords to save your progress. This was a common feature in many NES games, allowing players to resume their adventure from where they left off. The game also features a sub-menu with commands to access info and tools. This menu is your command center, providing you with vital information and resources to aid in your quest.
The game also features a weapon, armor, and shield system, adding a layer of strategy to the gameplay. Having the strongest weapon or armor can be the difference between victory and defeat. Faxanadu also incorporates the use of magic and items, adding another layer of depth to the gameplay. The game has different kinds of keys, and understanding how and when to buy and use these keys is crucial to progressing in the game.
Faxanadu has a monetary system where you can defeat enemies to gain money. With this money, you can buy several tools. Knowing how to use these tools properly is essential to your success. Some tools can be used only once, others are permanent, and others are temporary. Some tools are automatic, and sometimes there are enemies that can provide some tools, but they must be defeated several times in order for that tool to appear. Also, reentering some screens can make items appear.
There is a limit of 8 items in your inventory, and you can sell tools to make room for new tools. However, be aware that in the place called “Tower of Suffer”, there is a Pendant, but the game is bugged so don’t take that item because your power will decrease instead of increase.
Please note that the NA/EU version of Faxanadu has been modified, with some religious symbols, for example, being changed due to regional differences. This is a common practice in the gaming industry to cater to different cultural sensitivities.
In conclusion, Faxanadu is a game that offers a rich and immersive gaming experience. Its intricate gameplay mechanics, engaging storyline, and captivating world make it a must-play for any retro gaming enthusiast. So, are you ready to embark on this epic adventure and bring the elf fountain source back to life? The world of Faxanadu awaits you!
