    This Sound Installation Piece with the Totem Sculptures is absolutely amazing ! You've created an " Archeology of Electronic Equipment Which Sings " . And these Totems are an Anthropomorphic representation of their respective individuality as you, the Artist, envisions them...you have formed these old discarded machines into representations of humans -Given them life again by turning each machine into a type of new instrument. Modular as well as Electronic then by presenting these wonderful " Totems " in this way, having them
    Perform for an audience, you have given them {old machines } back to a new generation of people who will now see and hear them as whole entities.

    You know as I watch these, it's mind-blowing how in-sync you have to be with your electronics and set up. You essentially have to embody them to create improvisational tracks. How simple it would be for anyone to accidentally create a feedback loop wrecking the experience. You're a true artist my friend.

  • @Starclimber

    I love how members of your audience started trancing out on your shifting drones. Thanks, really enjoyed your project.

    • @ConwayBob
      @ConwayBob 4 года назад +1

      I liked that aspect of it too, watching the audience members reacting to this amazing experience. I also enjoyed watching Stefan's graceful dance moves as he deftly threaded his way through a maze of cables to throw a switch here or tweak a knob there and then returned to the mixing console without tripping and causing a test gear avalanche.

  • @tru7hhimself

    I'm pretty open minded to a lot of things and love the concept of experimental music like this. But I tend to kind of find a lot of that type of performances a bit too far out there/chaotic or in my eyes/ears fake. I really enjoyed your performance here. Of course I tend to like your performances and the way you make your music. Nice work and cool equipment.

    I know when you first started messing with test equipment, it was a struggle to get them to play nicely with each other. Impressive how you threw those stacks together and got it working in such a short time. Now you’re making it look easy lol. Sounded awesome as usual.
    And can I add your performance reminds me of a tamed version of Sam Battle, walking around twisting knobs on a wall of sound.

  • @hakonsoreide
    @hakonsoreide 4 года назад +6

    I've just started buying some test equipment myself, primarily resistor based first of all since that is easy to use musically when connected to my Phenol synthesizer, and also I find vintage test equipment aesthetically very beautiful - and it is possible to get things at the kind of prices where even just the switches would be worth more than one pays if one decides to use them for something else.
    I am quite fascinated at what kind of sounds you're able to get out of these machines, which has inspired me to try something like that some day too.
    I must say I like how the work is both a group of sculptures as well as having the potential for such interesting and beautiful noises. Makes me wish I was living in Berlin and not in the relatively cultural backwaters of Inverness, Scotland where experimental music isn't often heard - at least not so much outside my room as far as I know.
    Keep up the great work making interesting sonic art.

      @@Hainbach is it difficult to modify the 'scientific' equipment due to accuracy?
      You seem to have the perfect/ comfortable setup right now, but I know you always search for more. Hence the question; is it hard to make, let's say; extra (modified) modulations in such circuits? f.e. clock-synced...

    Wow!! That was the first time I have seen you perform with a audience present...really great! It's really encouraging to me that people will come out to hear such challenging,unusual sounds!! There is something really moving about this..that you hauled all this heavy gear out for a one-time performance of such unusual and experimental music. As someone who comes more or less from an analog world ( guitar,bass,percussion..some synthesis... ('94 Korg O1 Pro-X) this is pretty mind -blowing to me! I just LOVE that you have taken these obsolete items that might have ended up on a scrap heap had you not done something with them. I really like the unpredictability of the equipment..and of course, the sounds themselves are fascinating!! It inspires me to hook up my guitar pedals and keyboards to see what I can come up with. So..thank you, Hainbach!! You are a True Sonic Alchemist!! I look forward to your next audio adventure!!

    Love it! Reminded me strongly of one of my favourite electronic composer, François Bayle, I had the pleasure to meet in 77 at a French sci-fi convention, and specifically two of his works: Espaces inhabitables (Uninhabitable Spaces) and Hommage à Robur (Tribute to Robur) which inspired me strongly for my early electronic compositions. There is here the same retrofuturistic flavour and poetic/eerie mood only those old electronic generators can produce.

    This is wonderful, Hainbach, an epic live performance! There's more to be heard here than some modulated sine and square waves. At around 20:22 it sounds like a cat is purring in my lap. In other places, I can hear the mating music of nocturnal flying insects at rest up among high tree branches at Midnight, and later the magnified murmurings of silk caterpillars as they work at their craft. And then, after a time, some monks in some distant stone chapel intone their plainsong prayers, burying their pale faces in lumpy cushions filled with discarded lottery tickets. Later still, a traveling carnival troop sets up shop on the edge of the town square and beckons people to its cotton candy and roasted almond stalls as jugglers warm-up behind their tent. Who knew all of this could be coaxed from old electronic circuits rescued from the scrap heap? This is some of the best, most evocative ambient music ever. Thank you for sharing!

      @@Hainbach I just had an idea for a webseries... You have 3 days to turn whatever local discarded gear you can scrape up and craigslist / pawn shop finds into a workable live setup. 'Roadkill' but for test equipment instead of cars. Would patreon the shit out of that.

    Ich finde es genial, wie du spielst ! Sehr begeisternde Hingabe. Ich stelle vor wie viel Zeit du gebraucht hast um die Geräte kennen zu lernen.

    Have you thought about making a sample pack of sounds from test equipment? I'd interested in that.
    Unless you already have and I'm just unaware...
