- Pregnancy skin care is one of the common concerns I encounter. I decided to make this video particularly because of the number of inquiries I get regarding what products are safe to use while pregnant.
There is no reason why you should not take care of your skin while you're pregnant!
I will mention some common skin conditions in pregnancy and what ingredients are safe to use and what are those that you must avoid. I will also briefly talk about some procedures that can and cannot be done while pregnant.
This video serves to educate and give information about anything related to skin and skincare and shall in no way take the place of a proper consultation with an expert, such as a board-certified dermatologist.

Jhasmin Batacan hello! :) if youre not experiencing any skin issues and just want products for daily skincare regimen i suggest you go for products that are mild, with out too many ingredients.
Make sure to get a mild cleanser, a moisturizer - lightweight it u have oily skin and cream-based if you are dry, and sunscreen.

Hello Doctora! I’m 3 mos preggy now and still using Beauche Kojic Acid Soap. Safe po ba? Here are the ingredients: Purified Water, Cocos Nucifera (Virgin Coconut Oil), Sodium Hydroxide, Glycerine, Kojic Acid, Crica Papaya, Orange Oil (Citrus Sinesis).

EJ Rivera hello! Kojic acid is safe naman however soaps in general are very drying. Skin ng buntis is very prone to allergies and eczema i would suggest you shift to a milder cleanser and use emollients/lotion after cleansing or bathing :)

Yes you may, but if your skin doesn't improve, I recommend you go to a dermatologist for consultation.

Hi doc! Is Bio Oil safe to use when pregnant? I have heard that this is good for stretch marks and dark spots, however I just learned that it also contains Vitamin A which is not advisable for pregnant women. Thank you po!
From what i know it’s safe to use when pregnant. According to their FAQ:
Yes, Bio-Oil is safe to use throughout pregnancy. With regards to the level of vitamin A in Bio-Oil, it is low enough to render it harmless to the unborn child. Most healthcare professionals agree that for safety, the daily intake of vitamin A by an expectant mother should not exceed 5,000 I.U per gram. Taking absorption factors into account, an expectant mother would have to use more than 110ml of Bio-Oil per day, or almost two 60ml bottles, before exceeding the recommended daily maximum intake.

Doc, I am on my 2nd trimester and noticed hairfall during my pregnancy. Is there anything I can do to stop or minimize the hairfall?
I also noticed na nagka pimples ako sa tummy. Pre-pregnancy hindi naman po ako nagkaka pimples sa tummy area. Is that normal for pregnant women & anything I can do to stop that?
CSG hello! Hair fall during pregnancy is not very common but it can happen because of the changes the body experiences to support the growing fetus. This change should be temporary, and what I suggest you do at the moment is to not contribute to hair fall by using gentle hair products and avoiding hair treatments that can add to the stress.
As for “pimples” on your tummy, the abdomen is an unusual place for “pimples”. The rasheds you are seeing might be something else, hence if it continues or persists i suggest you consult na.
With regards to skincare in general. Stick to products that do not contain too many ingredients as pregnant skin is sensitive and prone to irritation.
You may experience many other skin changes while pregnant predominantly due to hormonal changes. Pls refer to my video on pregnancy skin changes to know more :)

Raychel Benedictos hello! Being pregnant is a whole new experience for your body, maraming mga pagbabago na nangyayari at dahil dito minsan nagkakarkoon ng adjustments lalo na sa first trimester.
Karamihan sa mga over the counter skin care products are safe naman sa buntis. Pero my advise to you since 1 month pregnant ka palang is to stick muna to the basic stuff - gentle cleanser, moisturizer (if needed) and sun protection.
For your cleanser iwasan mo ung mga very drying or ung banat ung feeling ng balat after.
It also helps to eat a balanced diet and to get enough sleep and rest.

Hi Dr. Gaile! Been suffering from adult acne for 2 yrs already. Dati nman ok ako sa cetaphil, pero bgla nalang nagbago at nawalan na ng effect sa skin ko. As of today (4 weeks pregnant), safe po ab ang kojic acid sa face and body plus celeteque hydration toner.

Hello! The hormonal changes that happen when you’re pregnant can really cause many skin issues - isa na dun ang acne. Other than that you may also experience pigmentation, skin sensitivity and dryness.
In terms of safety, safe naman ang kojic acid but observe mo lng because it can be irritating. The celeteque hydration is also safe to use.
You can use products that contain low concentration alpha hydroxy acids and salicylic acid to control oily skin and acne.
However, if persistent, it is best to consult a dermatologist.

Lakshmi Priya hello! Snail mucin is a great anti-aging ingredient- i also use it myself, however, there are no studies on snail mucin use on pregnant women, and as such - since im conservative - i recommend na wag na muna cguro, after giving birth nalang.

If you are referring to bentonite clays, yes, they can be used when pregnant, but observe your skin for reactions. Pregnancy skin tend to be more reactive than usual.

I've read from different articles that it is one of the most recommended safe skin care products during pregnancy but I've noticed that it contains three types of paraben which can cause developmental issue to unborn baby? Hi doc. Im 4months pregnant and i tried to use cetaphil gentle cleanser coz it's soap-free and fragrance-free. After 3 days, may redness and irritation sa sensitive parts ng face ko (gilid ng nose and chin). I stopped using it for weeks na po and hanggang ngayon nandito padin ang irritation. How to treat this po? I'm using dove soap nalang po kasi yun yung first soap ko before i-try ang cetaphil. I just try cetaphil bcoz of my pregnancy acne :((

Hi doc ! I’m 4 weeks pregnant po , I would like to ask if BEAUTEDERM ELIXIR is safe for pregnant ? Cause they are claiming it’s 100% organic and safe for pregnant, but it contains glycolic acid po , I’m worried lang if may harmful effects sa baby , nagbrebreakouts na din po kasi ako and I have sensitive skin din po .. thanks !! Gege Clemente congratulations! As i do not have personal knowledge about the contents of beautederm i cannot give u an answer. But as long as it doesnt contain any of the ingredients that I mentioned, then it should be ok. Also organic doesnt always mean safe, it just means means that it comes from natural sources and is not synthetic.
Basta pregnant im very conservative, i always advise to stick to using things that you NEED.

sammy16 hello! Yes safe naman cya :) for now since 9 weeks ka palang, stick to the basics muna - gentle cleanser, moisturizer (if necessary) and sunscreen. Acne in pregnancy is hormonal :)

Hello Doc! Just found your channel very informative. I have concerns with dry skin mostly sa face (t-zone) Dry po na mej flaky na ang itchura. Im only using celetique hydration for facial wash and Luxe organix snail gel moisturizer. Any other recos po? TIA!
Hello! For dry skin I recommend you use a gentle, soap-free cleanser ung hindi banat ung feeling ng face after washing, followed by a cream-based moisturizer containing ingredients like ceramides, or hyaluronic acid.
However it is more common for the tzone to be oily than dry due to the oil glands in that area. The flakiness might be due to something else.
If my recommendations dont work, pls consult a dermatologist :)

In terms of safety, yes ok naman cya except one of the main ingredients ay ethyl alcohol. Hindi naman ito nakakasama pero nakakadry ito ng skin, which can compromise your skin barrier and make you more prone to irritation and breakout :)
I suggest you shift to gentler products not containing drying alcohols and just clean efficiently, exfoliate regularly and apply products that protect the skin.

Hello! Most sunscreens are safe to use when pregnant. But if you want to be a little more on the safe side, I recommend you look for those made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because they are less likely to cause allergic reactions and without a lot of ingredients or additives (eg. Coloring, fragrance etc)

Hello! What you are expriencing is hormonal and in most women, nagreresolve after giving birth. Before you go into any prescription medication, you can try the following:
1. washing/cleaning with gentle cleanser twice a day and after sweating
double cleanse in the evening if you are oily or if nag apply ka ng mga creams or sunscreen, make up during the day
2. exfoliate 1-2x a week with gentle scrubs or chemical exfoliant - like glycolic acid toner
3. apply light moisturizer and sunscreen
If hindi mag improve, i suggest u go for consultation :)

Hello! wow you're almost at the finish line! ilang weeks nalang. Your acne should resolve after you give birth but since hindi naman cya automatic it might be worth doing something about your skin already. How bad is your acne ba? are your lesions cystic? or mostly comedonal lng?

Advisable to wear sunscreens especially when pregnant but since sensitive skin ang pregnant i would recommend that you use physical sunscreens - ung may zinc oxide or titanium dioxide :)

hindi ako familiar sa kanya. check mo ung ingredients, kung wala nung mga sinasabi ko na bawal it should be ok. But then again pag buntis kc if hindi naman kailangan gamitin wag nalang.

Hello! Yes, most overt-the-counter skin care products are safe to use when pregnant. Ung mga minention ko lng ung talagang we advise na wag gamitin. Otherwise, ok lng 👍🏻☺️
Hi doc, pwede po ba gamitin yung green tea and cucumber acne set? Then yung cucumber soothing gel pwede kupo ba syang i-apply sa buong katawan ko? dati po kasi nung di ako buntis ginagawa ko po syang lotion.
In my opinion, yes, pwede ung green tea and cucumber soothing gel as long as wala nung mga ingredients na minention ko na bawal :)
Dra. Sana mapansin mo po ako, im 17weeks pregnant and suffering from acne on my jaw and chest area, i use skinoren cream 20% azelaic acid nong hindi pa ako buntis at effective po siya sa akin. Ngayong pregnant ako tinigil ko kasi natatakot ako baka hindi safe sa pregnant women. happy po ako na buntis ako dahil matagal na namin pinagpepray ng hubby ko pero dahil sa breakouts 😞 nakakalungkot tuloy kelangan ko lagi high neck na damit kasi nahihiya ako pag lumalabas ako.

Azelaic acid is safe to use when pregnant :) however if you are experiencing moderate to severe acne/breakout it is still best to have a formal/proper consultation with a dermatologist online or in clinic to be guided with the proper application of your skincare products and how to best take care of your skin while pregnant :)

Hello! tingin ko naman ok lng basta wala ung mga sinabi ko na bawal gamitin, but i suggest to try ung mga moisturizers na walang mashadong maraming ingredients, as in moisturizers lng talaga -- cetaphil cream or lotion, ceradan cream, physiogel cream, aveeno skin relief cream etc :)

2)Ordinary. Absorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%?

All at once i think its a bit too much. Your skin might bot be able to realize the benefits if each product if they are used altogether

bianca bersales yes, flakes on the scalp can be due to shampoo residues that were not rinsed well, dry scalp or dandruff. To treat dandruff you can use anti dandruff shampoo, the medical grade (eg ciclopirox olamine, ketoconazole).
As for moisturizers best to use those made for dry skin. Try aveeno skin relief, ceradan, cetaphil AD pro or physiogel AI cream.

Im a bit conservative and I don’t recommend my pregnant patients to use hair dyes because they can get absorbed through the scalp.
If you must, i suggest u apply it on your hair strands and avoid the scalp :)

Great list! Yes you can use all of them.
Not to worry about using retinaldehyde and BHA before finding out about your pregnancy. Retinoids we ask patients to discontinue using however for a few patients with acne I sometimes prescribe low concentration BHA (2% or less) to somehow manage their acne.

Yes pwede naman :) but there is mixed research about oil preventing stretchmarks formation. Having stretchmarks has a genetic component -- namamana. Also one way to avoid having stretchmarks is by not gaining too much weight during pregnancy. But you can moisturize naman with oil :)

Den Dasmarinas naku napakaraming magandang brands ng vitamin c in the market. For me, choose one that is at least 10% vitamin c and make sure that it is a reputable/trusted brand that is BFAD-approved.

Mary Hazel Cabanes hi! Most over the counter skin care products and make up are safe to use naman while pregnant. My suggestion lng, since pregnant skin can be a little more sensitive than usual, and is prone to irritation and pigment alterations, is to stick to products na walang mashadong maraming additives or additional ingredients.
Stick to the basics- mild, soap-free cleanser, a gentle exfoliant (physical or chemical containing low concentration AHAs), a moisturizer and sunscreen.
Same with make-up/foundation- look for products that are non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic, again to avoid getting irritations.

lorna capisonda hi lorna, 11 weeks is still fairly early into your pregnancy - i dont recommend that you use too many skin care products or ingredients on your skin.
Ung pimples mo is largely due to an increase in hormones that happens in all pregnancies.
What you can do now is to prevent worsening by double cleansing with mild cleansers to effectively remove oil and dirt from your skin, to exfoliate using gentle scrubs to prevent buildup of dead skin cells and to remove leftover dirt and debris, to moisturize with light moisturizer and to apply sunscreens in the morning.
Hi doc ask ko lng po if gaano katagal mawala yung acne after manganak? Kasi prang nag worsen na ung akin may nana na po yung iba at pabalik balik lang. hindi po ako ma acne bago ako magbuntis.
Iba iba. It really depends on your hormones and how your body adapts to the changes. Merong nawawala agad, meron hindi nawawala until magkaroon ng treatment. My recommendation is to try to do something about it while youre pregnant especially of moderate to severe acne na cya by consulting a dermatologist.

When pregnant I tend to advise patients to avoid using products that contain "whitening: and "rejuvenating" or "anti-aging" in the label kc some are not recommended for use when pregnant. If dryness is your issue, i suggest you look for products that contain misturizing ingredients like ceramides, colloidal oatmeal or even hyaluronic acid.
With any other ingredients, basta wala ung mga minention ko na bawal, then they should be safe to use when pregnant.

Don’t worry, recent studies show that topical tretinoin has very little absorption into the bloodstream kaya lng namin pinagbabawal because the oral form is category x. Na stop mo naman na cya so ok na un :) walang effect yan kay baby

Hello! Ang pagiging oily and pagkakaroon ng pimples are part of your pregnancy due to the increase in your hormones. Dahil pregnant ka you cannot use ung mga gamot nabibigay namin talaga sa mga buntis.
For noy my recommendation is for you to use a gentle cleanser for your face, wash it twice aday, exfoliate regularly using a gentle physical scrub, and then applying sunscreen.
If hindi parin mag improve, i suggest na magpatingin ka na saming mga dermatologist para ma assess ka ng mabuti at mabigayb ng lunas ang skin mo :)

De Guzman upon checking the ingredients list, it contains zinc oxide, glycolic acid, niacinamide and salicylic acid, while all of those are generally safe to use when pregnant provided applied to small areas of the body like the face, I still don’t recommend using them unless absolutely necessary.

OSH 28 upon checking, the l’oreal revitalift line has pro-retinol (a derivative of retinol - which is not recommended to use when pregnant).
I would advise to doscontinue using this line muna just to be on th safe side.
As a general rule i tell my pregnant patients to avoid products that are anti-aging, rejuvenating, and whitening.
