My dad was a medic in the 5th Army and he went from North Africa to Sicily, Italy, and ended up in Monaco at the end of the war. He never talked about his war experiences either.

That is some of the best PR a Nato signatory country could get. Those soldiers are representing Belgium and for them to take time out of their site seeing to take pictures with people is just fantastic. Not all soldiers are mindless brutes these are the best that Belgium has and My hats off to them
People laugh when they yell step back but what they don't understand is that guard will not stop, walk around or jump over you. He will walk through you. Remember these young men are British soldiers who have most likely seen combat at one time or another.

It would have been a nice gesture of the Belgian soldiers would fall in line and saluted the guard they took pictures of. Just a form of respect from one soldier to another one.

At one point they got more attention than the English guards and that could not be the intention, the Belgian soldiers felt a bit uncomfortable with that. Hence, they left quickly after a few photos. Historically, there has almost always been a very good relationship between England and Belgium. Despite the fact that the Counts of Flanders had to answer to the French kings, they were usually inclined to form an alliance with England.
FYI: They are actually still candidate NCO's from the Belgian Royal School for non-commissioned officers known as Saffraanberg. All components there: Army, Air Force and Navy.

there will be a book of protocol involving saluting an inch thick; and most service staff know the important and common day to day regulations regarding saluting. This situation gets complex service members from different countries, were they there officially as part of an invited foreign delegation, were they filling in a couple of hours unofficially between their other duties in London, so do they go formal and salute, if they are there in an unofficial capacity? They thought is was probably better to forget it.... and they were most likely to be correct
I honestly would hate to have to do that job. You're trying to honor and represent your Nation as a guard, believing in the honor and value of all the long standing traditions for your regiment. But in reality you are thrown into the crowd as a tourist attraction and you know 80% of the people see you as a cute relic and instagram opportunity... It must be a great moment, when fellow soldiers come along that appreciate and understand though.
it would do your head in very quickly. Containing yourself from making sarcastic remarks is the worst. And figuring out where you would hide the bodies if you could have your way. That is all stressful. They are there to guard the place... not joke with tourists and being pleasant to the idiot ones. If you have ever been in uniform you will know that it has a magnetic quality to idiots. This is allowed in this case as it is a hugely popular tourist attraction and makes some money for the nation.

@MIRANDAFONSO a salute has to be returned. So you should not salute a soldier that is under orders not to move. So yes, all the us-presidents that salute marines when they enter or leave their helicopter are wrong. Serious breach of protocol.
No disrespect meant but those Belgians were all sergeants so maybe the guard should have saluted them? :-) But to be fair, the white ribbon under their rank identifies them as candidate career NCO's from Belgium's NCO school in Saffraanberg, Belgium. As long as they wear that ribbon they are candidates and lower ranks do not have to salute them. They themselves only have to salute higher ranks from sergeant and up and i am sure they would have done so if the guard was wearing rank insignia.
At 2:48 one of them asked " zouden die echt teruggroeten? " which means would they really salute back to us They weren’t sure if they were allowed to salute to them, and the guards vice versa

They will not salute because they know that the guard can't salute back. That is why soldiers never salute to civilians also.

One of the best experiences being in the military is interacting with other national military units…same spirit different uniform.

We're kind of cousins after all, we have the same royal family. Windsor used to be called Saxe-Cobourg before WW1 but it sounded "too German".

Zij waren daar een parade gaan doen genaamd (cenotaph) en hadden na de parade de kans om Londen te verkennen.
