  • Cute coot chicks, just hatched and basking in the sun, looking for food with the help of both the male and female coot. Coot chick parents take great care of the young, right from the start! But close by, there was a hungry and on-the-hunt blue heron. These large birds of prey eat chicks. Lo and behold right on camera the large bird, with a long weapon called his beak swooped down and tried to grab two hatchlings alone on the water. Yet the instincts programmed into these little chicks from God teaches them to dive in the water, evading this skilled hunter!
Later we also see the Great rested grebe pair with chicks of their own, on the back of their mother. They they are safer from the dangers around the pond that lurk. OK, back to the coot chicks!
Coot chicks are indeed unique-looking birds. When they hatch, they sport a striking appearance with their fluffy black down feathers and bright red heads. These distinctive features make them easily recognizable among other waterfowl chicks.
One of the most notable aspects of coot chicks is their bright red heads, which stand out against their dark downy bodies. This red coloration serves as a signal to their parents, indicating their readiness to be fed. As they grow, the red color fades, eventually transforming into the more muted colors of adult coots.
Another interesting characteristic of coot chicks is their behavior. They are quite precocious and are often seen swimming and foraging alongside their parents shortly after hatching. Despite their small size, they are surprisingly independent and can keep up with the rest of the family group.
Coot chicks are also known for their adaptability. They are often found in a variety of aquatic habitats, including lakes, ponds, and marshes, where they feed on aquatic plants, insects, and small invertebrates.
Overall, coot chicks are fascinating creatures with their unique appearance, behavior, and adaptability, adding diversity and charm to the world of waterfowl.
