  • LayOut 2022 just dropped! The release notes are enticing, but will these new features hold up when put to the test against real world scenarios? Watch this video to find out! I'm going to explain how to find and use the new features, then offer an opinion about whether or not they improve my SketchUp to LayOut worklflow for creating construction documents. I'm critiquing from my own perspective, that of a professional residential designer who uses SketchUp Pro and LayOut for every phase of the design process. I'm not going to pull any punches on this review so stick with me to the end. Let's go!

    This video answered all my questions about auto-text. :/ thanks Mike.

    I've been requesting Find and Replace for years, glad it is finally here.
    I had to do a work-around for elevations of multi-story buildings and built it into my template. IE , , , etc. for First Floor Finish Floor, Second Floor Top Plate, Third Floor Raised Plate... Then I modify the autotext once to update all references. We use actual finish floor elevation instead of a reference elevation, and plates move depending on wall heights.
    When I have a stepping 4 story building with 12 pages of sections, you can imagine the time involved in manually retyping all that, and the associated potential for typos.
    I'll probably keep my template as is, but this will help everywhere else.

      @SketchitReal I really like your approach. I have explored this idea, but never actually gone all the way in. It's funny... You almost don't need find and replace text if you are savvy with auto text. It is nice though! Probably simpler than embedding autotext in a template for most users. I am going to take a stab at using these labels on my next project. Thanks for the input!

      @@BrightmanDesigns Appreciate that. Wish I could add a screenshot in the comments here, but it goes like this:
      Tag Auto-Text
      100'-0" (enter) First Floor Finish Floor
      109'-0" (enter) First Floor Top Plate
      etc. season to taste...
      More for anyone else reading the comments, you know these things already.
      Also, I have that text Right Center justified on my elevation tag, so it's just the one auto-tag and I get elevation over description.

    I"m 100% on board with modeling with SketchUp, but Layout is just tripping over itself at every step along the way....and is painfully slow and laggy. I personally don't acknowledge it as a proper drafting software like AutoCAD (LT in my case). For me, it's just an easy-ish way to mark-up 3D model live linked to scene's from SketchUp. I'm only critical because I want it to be so much better- same for SketchUp.

      Yeah, LayOut performance does get in the way. I have learned all of the tricks to walk on egg shells around LayOut... I really do love it's simple connection to SketchUp for creating my permit sets. It's so disappointing to see these new features that don't solve real problems, I wish they had spent time working under the hood...

      It is understandable to have a preference. But, it is evident from your comments that you do not have a keen understanding of Sketchup or Layout. That is also understandable since any CAD program or complicated software requires a serious commitment of focus and time. But I recommend not making unqualified statements.

      Sometimes you need to be a squeaky wheel. Complacency is the default mode for the masses who are satiated by mediocrity. To see the improvements we want we the shareholders should keep Trimble honest because we are paying them for a product that many of us rely on for income. The improvements we see under Trimble pale in comparison to the Google days and it would seem we are funding SketchUp via proxy of the unpaid work of extension creators.

    I used Layout a few weeks ago for a project. Layout for SketchUp leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. It seemed like it took me a long time just to do something relatively simple. Of course, I am not as skilled with layout as others might be. Trimble really needs to improve their Layout program. Using Layout, I can appreciate the other design software I currently use and how easy con docs are compared to Layout.

      哎,你所说的,我也很赞同,本人很伤心Trimble公司自从收购SketchUp之后,真的是十年如一日,可以说他的更新内容不忍直视,如果SketchUp给我们中国公司收购了,那基本没Revit什么事了。 LayOut真的是很强很好用,就是还有很多功能缺欠,标尺不支持四舍五入,还有就是SketchUp众机平等,再好有PC配置都一样很卡,很希望SketchUp早点支持DX12或 Vulkan 如果一直只支持OpenGL的话真的另人悲衰

      I have been tinkering with a ConDoc to AutoCAD workflow for final permit sets... It works! Just use the backgrounds drawing set to make .dwgs. XREF them the same way consultants do... This way you can think and design in SketchUp 3d, then document in CAD!

    LayOut is wonderful but the fact that we dont have access To the outliner like in sketchup makes it s " perfectible " but over all it s a great programme ..

    • @BrightmanDesigns
      @BrightmanDesigns  2 года назад +2

      perfectible: capable of improvement or perfection. I couldn't agree more! I personally don't use the outliner in SketchUp, so I'm not too interested in that functionality in LayOut. I think an entity info dialog (with expanded functionality) might be a step in the right direction. I don't want another way to assign a layer in LayOut, I want smart annotations!

    Mike. Huge fan of your work and your channel. I have been trying to implement the workflow to my studio but i find layout so damn slow. Where do you give recommendations on making it respond more better? I am a MAC user. And SketchUp runs beautifully, but LayOut feels so lagging that i end up always migrating to AutoCAD to draft construction plans.

    I do find the sequence autotext more useful than yourself, but yes, I agree that the new autotext features can't be used practically without further changes. I am not too bothered by having to set new axes for the the coordinates autotext, but the real pain is that the leader lines have to be set to a point in the model each time - that and being unable to fine tune dimension style. Once that is sorted, you could drag and drop everything you need from your scrapbook which is populated with your own style of autotext, and you are a winner! ...but they didn't manage to make that last step...

    Layout should have multiple pages formats in one documentation file... should have plugins, same as sketchup pro version... and should have dark mode alowd...
    Is too lagy, and little useful.
    I still using AutoCAD to get things done in time

    • @BrightmanDesigns
      @BrightmanDesigns  2 года назад +2

      Wouldn't that be something!? My number one request is extensibility. Let's make some LayOut plugins... But truth be told there are so many things missing in the core program. I'm not even sure that we could fill that void with extensions, and I am definitely not holding my breath for an open API. Funny you mention the CAD workflow, I have been digging in on that lately... Sorting some ideas of how ConDoc can better automate back to CAD for documentation. If LayOut is going to continue to be what it is, inching forward through the next decade, I think I would prefer to document in CAD where the features I need already exist! I am confident we can develop a system that mimics the LayOut link behavior in CAD...

    Wait another year and hope that LO improves has been the mantra for many years... When was the LO API introduces? And how has that developed? How many plugins / extensions are there for LO? Exactly. SU + LO team leaders need to be dropped, like a hot potato.

    • @BrightmanDesigns
      @BrightmanDesigns  2 года назад +1

      I think the LayOut API has been around for about 3 years. My understanding and best attempt at explaining it... In it's current state, it's nothing like the SketchUp API which exposes commands and operations that can be bundled into automations. It really just allows SketchUp to generate LayOut files. That's it. Mikestradamus predicts another 5 years before we see anything like a LayOut extensions Warehouse. Truth be told, I don't believe it's even on their roadmap.

    Damn it easy to work with but in real world where you had hudreds megabytes skp file ,its totally lost its power. File exchange become totally slow..ram eater.. unresponsive ui for long time when load complex scene.. unreliable pdf exporter..hah .its made me give up to work with layout..its look like i work with cad ,if the total time is totaled..
