- Republican Senator Rand Paul challenged Dr. Fauci on why Americans should wear masks after being vaccinated during a Senate hearing. Dr. Fauci responded that wearing masks after vaccination would be a good practice considering the unknown potential of Covid-19 variants spreading in communities.

I live in New Zealand where the politicians actually listen to the scientists. As a result, we don't wear face masks but not for the reasons promoted by the Senator. We don't wear face masks because we followed the science and there are no community cases of Covid 19. We don't need to wear face masks (but people still do). I am so glad I don't live in the USA.

If Mr. Paul’s logic was so sound that he didn’t need another opinion, asking the question was for all intents and purposes, “just theatre”. But on a more serious note and as a scientist myself, making claims about immunity from a virus based on a set of experiments done only in vitro is almost always a recipe for disaster. There is a reason that in vitro studies are typically just used as proof of concept. With the exception of (some) organoids that have been developed, monolayers of cells are simply not capable of recapitulating the complexities of a human system. That becomes even more difficult when you start looking at immune responses that vary widely between different tissues.

Masks really aren't the effective when you compare the fibers in the mask itself to the microscopic size of the virus. I'm of the belief that 2 pieces of fabric over the mouth as sufficient protection is a fallacy. In fact, once could argue the constant adjusting of a mask with a person's hands could make a person more at risk after touching services. We just need to take care of the seniors and people with existing medical conditions. Make sure they take every precaution as to not contract the virus. Those of us who are healthy adults can't just put the world on pause for the rest of our lives in fear of a flu. I'm not wearing a mask for the rest of my life. I don't like this mixture of medicine/politics and the evermore oppressive society we're living in. It's getting to the point of infringing on the individual rights and freedoms of being a human being. It's getting to be borderline Orwellian structure.

In fact, in most clinical trials, most vaccines have an efficacy rate of 80 to 90% at preventing infection.
This means you can be a potential carrier to the illness while being only mildly sick.

The GOP made masks and the virus a political issue because they didn’t want a recession as it would mean they’d lose the white house, which they did. Dug their heads in the sand and tried to press on until there was too much blood on the ground that they had to eventually deal with it at which point it was too late.
Rand Paul and other GOP act like everyone doesn’t have to get a different FLU vaccine every year due to variants.

I've considered what Rand Paul is saying.
This is what I understand from his questioning:
Rand Paul doesn't want to talk about the many variants of Covid-19 that are quickly dominating the USA and the rest of the world. He wants people who've already had the original Covid-19 infection & the vaccinated people who are only vaccinated against the original Covid-19 infection to be able to go without a mask mandate.
I would agree with Rand Paul if:
There weren't a shitload of other variants of Covid-19 (even more communicable/ transmissible than the original)) threatening to kill another half a million Americans.
My question for you is...why would you take the advice of Rand Paul about infectious diseases over the top US Doctor/research scientist of infectious diseases, Dr. Fauci?

In the case of a king cobra being factually and scientifically poisonous, there have been repeated occurrences of this also supported by the fact that scientists have already seen the poison before from a snake bite so they know it.
