      Humans? No. Humans are dumb. Every now and then though, you get smart individuals. Building a machine from scratch requires brains. Operating the machine in a factory/process setting however? Well, you can train chimps to do that. Copy and repeat. Simple.

    To think that theses kinds of techniques existed during the ancient Egyptian times, without the use of modern day tools…. Mind boggling!

      They obviously only used copper tools and chisels to get that perfect symmetric finish. They were also able to polish with copper hand tools. Truly fascinating. Not to mention lifting 30 ton granite blocks with ropes.

    The material for curling stones used in the Olympics are taken from one location on earth.
    A small island just off the Isle of Arran in Scotland

    My family has deep rooted ties going back centuries in making curling stones, some are the oldest in the world apparently.
    I forget the details.

    i used to live at the town where they get the stone from. trust me they still blast the rocks up there. but there is loads of heaps of stones like the ones from the old quarry there. the town is Penmaenmawr check it out on google earth or maps. has a lot of stone age stuff all over the mountains and an old stone circle they have been hacking away at the mountain and leveling it off lol.
    from what i remember there is only 2 locations where this kind of stone is harvested for curling stones. nice place to visit.

      @@karldias1415 when the quarry used to be more active the village was always gray from the dust from there. but now that environmental and health kickoffs they cleaned up there act due to dust. in the winter the mountain they are quarrying casts a shadow over the village during the winter making it feel a lot colder. its a nice place to visit there are parts in the valleys and mountains that can feel very alpine. its a slow pace of life there. :)

      No, curling stones come from either Ailsa Craig or Trefor quarry not Penmaenmawr.

      @@grahamdavies3139 you are correct they do make the stones at these places. but i know there was a company in deganwy that used to make them and that they moved to Penmaenmawr. and after re watching the video again i realised it was misty above the mountain as it looked just like the one in penmain from the angle of the footage. thanks for pointing that out. :)

    Made by Kay's of Scotland.
    The granite that makes these stones comes from a tiny island off the coast of Scotland. Called Ailsa Craig.
    Fun fact...
    These stones are the only stones in the Winter Olympics allowed..

    oh I never knew there was a UK version of this show with a British accent narrator. Lol but of course there is! And now that I am thoroughly fascinated, my knock-on questions include but are not limited to - how did they carve/chisel the curling stones before modern industrial processes? Like in the early 1900’s? How can such a high demand for many curling stones exist as to justify the expense of all that industrial computerized manufacuring? lol I guess maybe curling must be way way way more popular in other parts of the world than I previously realized! Very cool.

      When cutting granite you don't need torque, you need a good diamond blade. I've worked with granite and marble for 5 years.

    It should be noted that all Olympic curling stones come from a single quarry. (An island in Scotland).
    The world's only other quarry used for curling stones is in Wales.

    At 0:39 you can see " velocità filo / wire speed" i wonder if the machine is imported from Italy ( I live near a place where stone working represent the core of the economy) or if those curling stone are actually made here and they can not write "made in italy" for many reasons.

    Ah so thats how the egyptians might have worked their stones. Considering new findings where it looks like they have sawed in to the material at rather high speeds it left the scientists kinda speechless. But this pulli system makes sense and it could also be operated and run by humans. Not the top speed ofc, but im sure it would have worked out nicely.

      they could also have used flywheels to power the cutting cable, thus enabling outputs greater than human power but building up speed in the flywheel over time and then starting to cut after it's going very fast
